Chapter Two
Gwyneth had never encountered someone as shameless as this man. It was clear that she was the host, the one who had saved him, yet he showed no hint of gratitude whatsoever. Even before Gwyneth could take a bite of her sandwich, the man snatched it swiftly, eating right in front of her with a challenging demeanor. Gwyneth found his behavior utterly perplexing but still offered the advice, "Even if you're hungry, there's no need to devour your food like that. Too much activity will cause the treated wounds to tear."
Gwyneth didn't want to argue with a patient like him. She checked her watch, put on her coat, noticed the man still engrossed in his breakfast, grabbed some money, and handed it to him.
"You'd better head to the hospital. Here's the cab fare. That's the best I can do for you, young man. You should go home; your family must be worried sick. I have to go to work now, and I don't have time to take you anywhere," Gwyneth said as she left the house, intentionally leaving the door unlocked for him to leave on his own.
The reason she didn't take the man to the hospital where she worked was that she wasn't his legal guardian nor obligated to care for a stranger like him. Above all, Gwyneth knew absolutely nothing about this man. Through his reaction this morning, she saw that he was very likely a dangerous person, to a mild degree possibly a thug, to a higher could be a crime.
The origin of his wounds seemed suspicious as well. Gwyneth shook her head lightly, "Don't dwell on it anymore; that guy needs to leave today, that's for sure."
"Doctor Gwyneth, what are you thinking about so deeply?" the nurse asked as she stepped in to greet her last night.
Gwyneth quickly adjusted her mood, "Nothing much, just reviewing the patient's medical records. What's up?"
"The patient in room 402 has regained consciousness and needs your attention."
The patient in room 402 had been in a coma for three days, showing signs of awakening this morning, so the nurse quickly called Gwyneth. As she entered, the patient's family members quickly moved aside. After a brief examination, she breathed a sigh of relief.
"His waking up like this is a good sign, but his body is still very weak. He still needs to stay in the hospital for further observation. During this time, his family should be actively by his side, encouraging him."
The elegantly dressed woman, who was also the patient's mother, looked exhausted. She thanked Dr. Gwyneth sincerely, "Thank you, Doctor Gwyneth... we truly appreciate your help..."
"No need to thank me; it's our duty. Alright, if there's any issue, just call me." Gwyneth nodded slightly and left room 402 with the nurse.
In the hallway, Nurse Trang asked, "Dr. Gwyneth, do you know why that patient had to be hospitalized? I'm Meadow's replacement so I don't know."
Gwyneth also wanted to say about this issue, "I was told he was in an accident and brought here, but when I treated him, although he had car accident injuries, there were many wounds on his body that weren't from the collision. But that's not something we should be concerned about. It's better to pay less attention."
They were just doctors and nurses, not police investigators. Their duty was to save lives and provide treatment, not delve into other matters. Not all patients came from ordinary backgrounds...
"I'm just curious. I noticed that the patient's family seems very wealthy. When their son was treated, they said that as long as he wakes up, they'll invest in our hospital. Just imagine, you're the attending physician, so they'll surely send a very generous thank-you gift." Nurse Trang couldn't contain her imagination.
Gwyneth stood beside her, nodding slightly. She didn't care about that because she had encountered too many patients and families like that. She was about to return to her office when she heard her phone ring.
Gwyneth looked at the message on her phone, her expression darkening. Nurse Trang seemed to understand something, "Is it the hospital director texting you again? Gwyneth, I have some advice for you. You know this private hospital belongs to him. If he's paying attention to you like this, you should follow his wishes...Who knows, maybe the dean's chair will be yours. Even if you are promoted by the general manager, there is no doubt about your ability.”
"I know..." Gwyneth sighed deeply. What Nurse Trang said was entirely accurate, and of course, the downside of not listening was getting fired.
This private hospital primarily catered to and treated affluent patients. The fees, care, and services were all exorbitant. Not everyone could become a doctor here; let alone talk about needing high levels of competence and professionalism, one also needed a wealthy background.
Gwyneth had started working here as an intern, a special exception made by a renowned doctor who recommended her. And now, Gwyneth had become a full-fledged doctor at the age of twenty-seven, admired by many, with the position of department head as her goal.
Standing in front of the CEO's office, Gwyneth hesitated for a moment but eventually knocked. A voice from inside said, "Come in."
"What do you want to see me about, Mr. Dixon?" Gwyneth stepped in.
"You're still as cold as ever, Gwyneth. Of course, I wouldn't summon you without reason. Please, have a seat." Mr. Dixon gestured for her to sit.
Gwyneth was reluctant, but he was her superior, so she couldn't refuse. As soon as she sat down across from him, he got straight to the point.
"Have you thought about my proposal?" A concise question that clearly conveyed his intent.
This was why Gwyneth didn't want to meet him at all. She avoided his gaze and sighed, saying, "Actually, I have thought a lot about your previous proposal, and I feel I'm not suitable for your son."
Faced with Gwyneth's tactful rejection, Mr. Dixon merely smirked and added, "Do you find my offers insufficient? If so, I can provide even more perks that no other doctor in this hospital enjoys. Not only that, but I can also offer you homes and cars. Gwyneth, I've met many people like you before. You should speak your mind openly in front of me without hiding your demands."
Gwyneth was speechless with this man; in his eyes, there was only self-interest. She had no desire to marry his foolish son, despite rejecting his advances many times before, he always made such proposals, which made her feel very annoyed. But because of work, Gwyneth could only decline gently.
"I'm sorry, but I really don't want to get married at this time. I-"
"I understand. Women like you always say they don't want or need anything, but in reality, you want more benefits. Avoiding me is futile; in this hospital, I only see you fit for my son. It seems like you've been working hard these past few days, so please continue to think carefully." Mr. Dixon lit a cigarette and exhaled a puff of gray smoke.
Gwyneth thought she was free to leave but just as her hand reached for the door, she heard Mr. Dixon say, "I think the head of the department position suits you well, Gwyneth."
Walking down the corridor, Gwyneth couldn't shake off Mr. Dixon's last words from her mind. It was as if he could read her thoughts; she truly wanted that head of department position. Currently, Dr. Allen held the position, but she was nearing retirement age, and in about a year, someone else would take over. In this hospital, not only Gwyneth but many doctors were eyeing that position.
"That damn old man!" Gwyneth cursed bitterly. He wanted her to marry his frivolous son. Gwyneth wouldn't be insane to marry a man who only knew how to party and squander money. Because he was the hospital CEO's son, he had visited the hospital before, Gwyneth greeted him politely a few times, and unexpectedly, he noticed her and wanted to marry her. Coincidentally, Mr. Dixon, the CEO, had also eyed Gwyneth as his daughter-in-law for a long time.
She desired wealth and power, but she wasn't blinded by them to the extent of not understanding Mr. Dixon's intentions. Outwardly, he wanted her to marry his son, but internally, he wanted to control her, make her work for him, and also take care of his foolish son. To put it accurately, if she married his son, she would become a free nanny, a money-making machine.
Gwyneth sighed deeply, unsure of what to say to the CEO next. On her way home, she kept pondering about today's events.
She hadn't finished her dinner from the night before, so she didn't go to the supermarket tonight; instead, she went straight home. Standing at the door, Gwyneth, as usual, searched for her keys, but when she gently pushed the door, it swung open.
"Right, I didn't lock the door to let him leave."
The darkened house left Gwyneth feeling relieved that the man had left, but just as she began to contemplate what to eat for dinner, a powerful force pulled her back, the feeling of something sharp being close to her neck causing her entire body to tremble uncontrollably.
"AAA... Who's there? I have money... I have money... don't kill me..." Gwyneth's face turned pale, her breath quickened with fear, her heart pounding as if it wanted to leap out of her chest. She didn't want to die like this, not at all.
Just as Gwyneth thought her life would end here, a soft laughter echoed in her ears. "You're too cowardly," he said.
With that, all the lights in the living room immediately turned on. At this moment, the man who had just held a knife to her neck stood in front of her and waved the sharp knife arbitrarily.
"It was just a joke... there's no need to be that scared. After all, you saved my life, so I won't kill you," he said with a smile.
But Gwyneth couldn't stand firm any longer. She angrily grabbed her bag and hurled it at him, but he easily dodged it without exerting any effort.
"Are you insane? I thought I was going to die. You nerve-racking lunatic, who wouldn't be afraid with a knife at their throat?" Gwyneth shouted, her voice loud, but her limbs trembling and icy cold.
After calming down, Gwyneth asked, "Why are you still here?"
"Why can't I be here?" he replied, not answering her question but instead turning it back on her, infuriating her further. However, after a long day's work, she didn't have the energy to argue anymore.
"Are you kidding me? This is my house. I saved you, and I'm not asking for anything in return, I just want you to leave as soon as possible. Consider us strangers, I don't want anything to do with someone like you."
Who would want to be involved with someone who resorts to violence like this man? Gwyneth had a gut feeling that he wasn't ordinary, as normal people don't engage in such dangerous behavior.
Chapter ThreeGwyneth looked at him still wearing her loose dress, the dress she wore had to reach her ankles but he only wore it to his knees. On top of that, the top part of the dress was about to tear because of his chest. She avoided looking at him because if she did, she wouldn't be able to suppress her urge to burst into laughter. However, Gwyneth didn't forget the main topic. She asked seriously, "If you feel you can't go to the hospital alone, let me take you-"Gwyneth wanted to say more, but she heard him say, "I can't go to the hospital, or more precisely, I can't go out. Last night, you also saw the wounds on my body, right? I was pursued by a secret organization. They want to chase and kill me, so if they find me, I'll surely die."As soon as he finished speaking, the atmosphere became unusually quiet and tense. Gwyneth shuddered slightly as she tried to remain calm and skeptical of his words, then she asked, "So... why do they want to kill you?""I know the secrets of tha
Chapter FourGwyneth was about to stand up and head back to her room when she thought of something and sat back down. She observed the man in front of her for a while, assessing him from head to toe before speaking up."How long do you intend to stay in my house? Can you give me a specific number? You know, I'm letting you stay, but at the very least, I should know how long you plan to be here, right?"Rad was still wearing Gwyneth's dress from this morning. He hadn't been able to change because there were no new clothes to wear. However, he didn't feel ashamed, remaining composed in front of her."I don't know, maybe a few days, a few months... or even a few years. It's hard to give you a specific number because I myself don't know what the future holds."Facing Rad's vague and indifferent response, Gwyneth's face paled with discomfort and unease. She didn't want her peaceful life to be disrupted, especially by a man who could potentially be dangerous. His name, 'Rad,' might not even
Chapter FiveAs usual, Gwyneth woke up on time and tired, she even woke up earlier than the alarm clock. After cleaning herself and changing clothes, Gwyneth walked out of the room, constantly thinking about what she would eat at the convenience store that morning before going to the hospital. Although the hospital has a canteen, she doesn't like the staff working there."Gwyneth, come here, breakfast is ready." Rad placed the last dish on the table, and as soon as he saw Gwyneth stepping out, he happily pulled out a chair.Gwyneth was shocked by the scene before her, not because of a rich breakfast spread but because of the attire Rad was wearing. She quickly turned away, trying not to look directly at him."Are you crazy? Why are you dressed like that? Stay away from me." Gwyneth waved her hand, deliberately shooing Rad away, unable to understand how he could dress like that. Could it be that he hit his head somewhere while being chased by some organization, thus losing his sense of
Chapter SixGwyneth didn't notice the sharp gaze Rad directed at her as she leaned against the counter, saying, "It's just a gift from a patient's family to thank me, a common occurrence that you don't need to pay attention to."As soon as Gwyneth turned to look at Rad, his expression changed, and he chuckled, "Oh really... You must be a very skilled doctor."“I'm a good doctor and of course I know this, but this gift doesn't mean I'm a good doctor. Don't ask too much, where's dinner?" Gwyneth waved her hand and said, she brought those gifts into the bedroom first.Since Gwyneth had already bought groceries and stored them in the fridge, Rad only needed to cook; he didn't have to step out of the house at all. Furthermore, because Gwyneth typically disliked disturbances and noise from the outside, the window was never opened despite the sparse population in the area."How's for dinner? Do you like it?" Rad, in a simple t-shirt, couldn't hide his muscular physique, emanating a rugged, h
Chapter SevenRad watched Gwyneth dealing with the leftovers on her plate with apparent frustration and made him burst into laughter."What's so funny?" Gwyneth frowned softly, feeling exhausted and pressured by the pointless things this man laughed at her discomfort.Rad said, "There's always a way out, you know. Just say you have a boyfriend or that you're married to someone. Surely the ones pushing you to get married will leave you alone."Gwyneth of course knows this, this is something that can easily be thought of, but if it were as simple as Rad said, she wouldn't feel this pressure. Furthermore, before that, Gwyneth also used many methods, from hard to soft, but they were also ineffective. She also hired several men to pretend to be her boyfriend, not only did she create elaborate plays to show her father and her stepmother knew and didn't push her anymore.Yet, every attempt failed for various reasons, and after a few times like that, every time Gwyneth claimed to have a boyfr
Chapter EightGwyneth thought that John would propose interesting conditions, or at least he would know how to persuade her to marry him, since he was the one who wanted to marry her, not the other way around. But it seemed that Gwyneth had overestimated this arrogant man. John not only lacked the maturity expected of a man but also believed that he was very valuable, assuming that everyone wanted to marry him. This left Gwyneth speechless and disheartened, with a hint of disdain in her smile towards this man."You're a woman, and being able to marry a wealthy man like me is a rare opportunity in your life. Do you know how many women out there want to marry me? Compared to those women, you're much luckier because I chose you over other young beautiful girls," John spoke arrogantly.Gwyneth tried to suppress a laugh because she knew the women John referred to were likely bar staff. Although she had no opinion about their profession, in their eyes, John was indeed a wealthy man who coul
Chapter NineOnly being strangers who coincidentally met and helped each other in times of difficulty, Gwyneth and Rad were no different. Unlike previous occasions, Gwyneth didn't have to spend a large sum to hire a stranger to pretend to be her boyfriend. This time, there was a man who voluntarily offered to pose as her husband. The 'husband' issue had been resolved, but if Gwyneth were to tell others that Rad was her husband, her stepmother would certainly not believe it. So, to completely bury their suspicions, Gwyneth decided not to be casual about it this time.Gwyneth would ensure that no one would discover Rad as her fake husband. Naturally, marriage-related documents such as marriage certificates couldn't be missing. Gwyneth also worried that the organization pursuing Rad might discover him, so she found a way to help Rad obtain a fake ID card, and of course, all the information on it was also fake.Falsifying such documents wasn't difficult but it cost quite a bit of money. D
Chapter TenThe dinner proceeded rather awkwardly because there was someone who shouldn't have been there—Rad. Yet, Gwyneth enjoyed seeing the forced, amiable expressions on her father and stepmother's faces towards him.Zelda appeared to ignore the man accompanying Gwyneth, but she couldn't help stealing a few glances. She had seen a few men accompany Gwyneth to similar gatherings before, but none as handsome as this one."Gwyneth, your father was a bit upset last time, which is why he raised his voice at you. Hopefully, you didn't take it to heart, but your father and I are just concerned about you. Mr. Allen doesn't have much free time, so you should give an answer," urged her stepmother, then turned to Allen with a charming smile. "I hope you don't mind. Gwyneth is too passionate about her work and has never been in love before, so this marriage might make her a bit uneasy."While her stepmother prodded Gwyneth for an answer, she also spoke to Allen. Gwyneth knew she was just pret
