Chapter Two

Gwyneth had never encountered someone as shameless as this man. It was clear that she was the host, the one who had saved him, yet he showed no hint of gratitude whatsoever. Even before Gwyneth could take a bite of her sandwich, the man snatched it swiftly, eating right in front of her with a challenging demeanor. Gwyneth found his behavior utterly perplexing but still offered the advice, "Even if you're hungry, there's no need to devour your food like that. Too much activity will cause the treated wounds to tear."

Gwyneth didn't want to argue with a patient like him. She checked her watch, put on her coat, noticed the man still engrossed in his breakfast, grabbed some money, and handed it to him.

"You'd better head to the hospital. Here's the cab fare. That's the best I can do for you, young man. You should go home; your family must be worried sick. I have to go to work now, and I don't have time to take you anywhere," Gwyneth said as she left the house, intentionally leaving the door unlocked for him to leave on his own.

The reason she didn't take the man to the hospital where she worked was that she wasn't his legal guardian nor obligated to care for a stranger like him. Above all, Gwyneth knew absolutely nothing about this man. Through his reaction this morning, she saw that he was very likely a dangerous person, to a mild degree possibly a thug, to a higher could be a crime.

The origin of his wounds seemed suspicious as well. Gwyneth shook her head lightly, "Don't dwell on it anymore; that guy needs to leave today, that's for sure."

"Doctor Gwyneth, what are you thinking about so deeply?" the nurse asked as she stepped in to greet her last night.

Gwyneth quickly adjusted her mood, "Nothing much, just reviewing the patient's medical records. What's up?"

"The patient in room 402 has regained consciousness and needs your attention."

The patient in room 402 had been in a coma for three days, showing signs of awakening this morning, so the nurse quickly called Gwyneth. As she entered, the patient's family members quickly moved aside. After a brief examination, she breathed a sigh of relief.

"His waking up like this is a good sign, but his body is still very weak. He still needs to stay in the hospital for further observation. During this time, his family should be actively by his side, encouraging him."

The elegantly dressed woman, who was also the patient's mother, looked exhausted. She thanked Dr. Gwyneth sincerely, "Thank you, Doctor Gwyneth... we truly appreciate your help..."

"No need to thank me; it's our duty. Alright, if there's any issue, just call me." Gwyneth nodded slightly and left room 402 with the nurse.

In the hallway, Nurse Trang asked, "Dr. Gwyneth, do you know why that patient had to be hospitalized? I'm Meadow's replacement so I don't know."

Gwyneth also wanted to say about this issue, "I was told he was in an accident and brought here, but when I treated him, although he had car accident injuries, there were many wounds on his body that weren't from the collision. But that's not something we should be concerned about. It's better to pay less attention."

They were just doctors and nurses, not police investigators. Their duty was to save lives and provide treatment, not delve into other matters. Not all patients came from ordinary backgrounds...

"I'm just curious. I noticed that the patient's family seems very wealthy. When their son was treated, they said that as long as he wakes up, they'll invest in our hospital. Just imagine, you're the attending physician, so they'll surely send a very generous thank-you gift." Nurse Trang couldn't contain her imagination.

Gwyneth stood beside her, nodding slightly. She didn't care about that because she had encountered too many patients and families like that. She was about to return to her office when she heard her phone ring.

Gwyneth looked at the message on her phone, her expression darkening. Nurse Trang seemed to understand something, "Is it the hospital director texting you again? Gwyneth, I have some advice for you. You know this private hospital belongs to him. If he's paying attention to you like this, you should follow his wishes...Who knows, maybe the dean's chair will be yours. Even if you are promoted by the general manager, there is no doubt about your ability.”

"I know..." Gwyneth sighed deeply. What Nurse Trang said was entirely accurate, and of course, the downside of not listening was getting fired.

This private hospital primarily catered to and treated affluent patients. The fees, care, and services were all exorbitant. Not everyone could become a doctor here; let alone talk about needing high levels of competence and professionalism, one also needed a wealthy background.

Gwyneth had started working here as an intern, a special exception made by a renowned doctor who recommended her. And now, Gwyneth had become a full-fledged doctor at the age of twenty-seven, admired by many, with the position of department head as her goal.

Standing in front of the CEO's office, Gwyneth hesitated for a moment but eventually knocked. A voice from inside said, "Come in."

"What do you want to see me about, Mr. Dixon?" Gwyneth stepped in.

"You're still as cold as ever, Gwyneth. Of course, I wouldn't summon you without reason. Please, have a seat." Mr. Dixon gestured for her to sit.

Gwyneth was reluctant, but he was her superior, so she couldn't refuse. As soon as she sat down across from him, he got straight to the point.

"Have you thought about my proposal?" A concise question that clearly conveyed his intent.

This was why Gwyneth didn't want to meet him at all. She avoided his gaze and sighed, saying, "Actually, I have thought a lot about your previous proposal, and I feel I'm not suitable for your son."

Faced with Gwyneth's tactful rejection, Mr. Dixon merely smirked and added, "Do you find my offers insufficient? If so, I can provide even more perks that no other doctor in this hospital enjoys. Not only that, but I can also offer you homes and cars. Gwyneth, I've met many people like you before. You should speak your mind openly in front of me without hiding your demands."

Gwyneth was speechless with this man; in his eyes, there was only self-interest. She had no desire to marry his foolish son, despite rejecting his advances many times before, he always made such proposals, which made her feel very annoyed. But because of work, Gwyneth could only decline gently.

"I'm sorry, but I really don't want to get married at this time. I-"

"I understand. Women like you always say they don't want or need anything, but in reality, you want more benefits. Avoiding me is futile; in this hospital, I only see you fit for my son. It seems like you've been working hard these past few days, so please continue to think carefully." Mr. Dixon lit a cigarette and exhaled a puff of gray smoke.

Gwyneth thought she was free to leave but just as her hand reached for the door, she heard Mr. Dixon say, "I think the head of the department position suits you well, Gwyneth."

Walking down the corridor, Gwyneth couldn't shake off Mr. Dixon's last words from her mind. It was as if he could read her thoughts; she truly wanted that head of department position. Currently, Dr. Allen held the position, but she was nearing retirement age, and in about a year, someone else would take over. In this hospital, not only Gwyneth but many doctors were eyeing that position.

"That damn old man!" Gwyneth cursed bitterly. He wanted her to marry his frivolous son. Gwyneth wouldn't be insane to marry a man who only knew how to party and squander money. Because he was the hospital CEO's son, he had visited the hospital before, Gwyneth greeted him politely a few times, and unexpectedly, he noticed her and wanted to marry her. Coincidentally, Mr. Dixon, the CEO, had also eyed Gwyneth as his daughter-in-law for a long time.

She desired wealth and power, but she wasn't blinded by them to the extent of not understanding Mr. Dixon's intentions. Outwardly, he wanted her to marry his son, but internally, he wanted to control her, make her work for him, and also take care of his foolish son. To put it accurately, if she married his son, she would become a free nanny, a money-making machine.

Gwyneth sighed deeply, unsure of what to say to the CEO next. On her way home, she kept pondering about today's events.

She hadn't finished her dinner from the night before, so she didn't go to the supermarket tonight; instead, she went straight home. Standing at the door, Gwyneth, as usual, searched for her keys, but when she gently pushed the door, it swung open.

"Right, I didn't lock the door to let him leave."

The darkened house left Gwyneth feeling relieved that the man had left, but just as she began to contemplate what to eat for dinner, a powerful force pulled her back, the feeling of something sharp being close to her neck causing her entire body to tremble uncontrollably.

"AAA... Who's there? I have money... I have money... don't kill me..." Gwyneth's face turned pale, her breath quickened with fear, her heart pounding as if it wanted to leap out of her chest. She didn't want to die like this, not at all.

Just as Gwyneth thought her life would end here, a soft laughter echoed in her ears. "You're too cowardly," he said.

With that, all the lights in the living room immediately turned on. At this moment, the man who had just held a knife to her neck stood in front of her and waved the sharp knife arbitrarily.

"It was just a joke... there's no need to be that scared. After all, you saved my life, so I won't kill you," he said with a smile.

But Gwyneth couldn't stand firm any longer. She angrily grabbed her bag and hurled it at him, but he easily dodged it without exerting any effort.

"Are you insane? I thought I was going to die. You nerve-racking lunatic, who wouldn't be afraid with a knife at their throat?" Gwyneth shouted, her voice loud, but her limbs trembling and icy cold.

After calming down, Gwyneth asked, "Why are you still here?"

"Why can't I be here?" he replied, not answering her question but instead turning it back on her, infuriating her further. However, after a long day's work, she didn't have the energy to argue anymore.

"Are you kidding me? This is my house. I saved you, and I'm not asking for anything in return, I just want you to leave as soon as possible. Consider us strangers, I don't want anything to do with someone like you."

Who would want to be involved with someone who resorts to violence like this man? Gwyneth had a gut feeling that he wasn't ordinary, as normal people don't engage in such dangerous behavior.
