Chapter 1
I sat at the backyard waiting for my husband, I was heavily pregnant and my little son was behind me , He looked sleepy so i took him to bed and rocked him till he fell asleep, As i walked out , My husband came home. He wrecked of alcohol,Aaron had a successful business that i had invested my whole inheritance to save him from being bankrupt, i sold our family estate and invested in him : i was a stupid young girl in love and to make it worse , The man i had made this investments for hated me and made my life a living hell , I was heavily pregnant and yet he would still beat me up . Tomorrow was going to be our 10 years anniversary of this non ending hell. “ Are you drunk ?” I sighed with my hands on my waist , I was drained, Earlier today Aaron’s mother and sisters had made me serve 50 people at a family party and yet my efforts wasn’t appreciated. I was the family slave and i wasn’t a wife , i was a means for their son to have a child . “ Ohh look it’s my fat ugly wife !” He body shamed me . i didn’t hate being called fat but i was a natural skinny woman and it was the pregnancy hormones that made me add some weight but Aaron wouldn’t shut up about it. “ Josh is sleeping please don’t cause a scene “ I said turning to walk out and he grabbed my hair pulling me back. “ Get out of my house ! Leave my son and get out of my house !” He screamed trying to push me down the stairs. “ Aaron please…Let’s not do this, Are you not tired! Are you not tired of always beating me up…What have i done to deserve this!” I yelled out of frustration. “ You pig ! Did you just yell at me ?” i felt a sharp push , it was Aaron he had pushed me down the stairs . The pain shot through my body like fire as I lay crumpled at the bottom of the stairs. My head throbbed, my arm felt twisted in a way it shouldn’t, and I could taste blood in my mouth. But none of that compared to the ache in my chest when I saw thick cloated blood : i was having a miscarriage as a result of the push ! The sharp pain in my abdomen was unbearable as I lay at the bottom of the stairs, blood pooling beneath me. My body felt like it was breaking apart, but it was the realization that hit me harder: I had lost my baby. “Aaron,” I choked out, my voice barely above a whisper. “Please… call 911.” He stood at the top of the stairs, looking down at me like I was nothing. His expression was cold, unfeeling. “Why would I? I told you—I want to see your corpse when I get back.” Aaron stood over me, his cold eyes showing no hint of remorse. “If anyone asks, you tripped. Got it?” His voice was low, but the threat in it was unmistakable. He leaned in, close enough for me to feel the venom in his words. “I hope you die,” he hissed. I swallowed hard, my throat dry and my heart racing. i had just lost a part of me . Tears streamed down my face as I screamed after him, my voice breaking. “Aaron, please! Don’t do this!” But he walked away, slamming the door behind him. “Mommy!” My son, Josh, ran into the room, his little face pale with fear as he saw the blood. “Mommy, are you okay? You’re bleeding!” I tried to smile through the pain, but my vision blurred. “I’m not going to die, baby,” I whispered, forcing strength into my voice. “But you have to help me. You need to call 911 right now, okay?” Josh’s hands shook as he pulled out his small, outdated phone. “I-I don’t know the number,” he stammered, tears falling down his cheeks. “I only have Uncle’s number!” “Then call him,” I said weakly, gripping his tiny hand. “Call your uncle. Tell him… tell him I need help.” Josh nodded, his little fingers fumbling to press the buttons. I closed my eyes, praying he could explain everything. The last thing I remembered was the sound of Josh’s frightened voice on the phone, begging for help, and then the sensation of strong arms lifting me. “Miranda! Miranda, stay with me!” a familiar voice commanded. It was Aaron’s elder brother. He had come. But before I could say anything, the darkness swallowed me whole. When I opened my eyes, the room was bathed in soft, sterile light, and the faint smell of disinfectant lingered. My body felt weak, but the sight of the man sitting beside me sent a wave of emotions crashing over me. Alex. Aaron’s elder brother. We had history—deep, complicated history. Back when I was still the heir to my father’s company, my father had pushed for us to marry. Alex was everything a man should be—strong, intelligent, kind. But I had fallen for the wrong brother, blinded by Aaron’s false charm. That was a story for another day. “Miranda!” Alex’s voice pulled me from my thoughts. His tone was sharp, and his piercing gaze held a mix of worry and frustration. “Do you have any idea how close you came to dying? How long are you planning to endure this?” I swallowed hard, my throat dry and scratchy. “What… what happened?” “You’ve been in a coma for a month,” he said, his voice shaking with anger. “A month, Miranda. And Aaron? He didn’t visit you once. Not once! Instead, he took Josh out of school and forgot you even exist.” His words hit me like a sledgehammer. My heart clenched, and the tears came before I could stop them. Alex leaned closer, his hands gripping the sides of my bed. “What would you have done if you died? Have you thought about your son?About how much worse it could’ve been?” I broke, sobbing uncontrollably as his words echoed in my mind. Everything felt like it was caving in, but one thing became clear. “I want to divorce him,” I whispered through the tears, my voice trembling but resolute. “Help me, Alex.”The day had been long and draining, and by the time Alex handed me the divorce documents, I felt like my body was only being held together by sheer willpower. I stared at the papers, my hands trembling as I flipped through them. Every line was a reminder of the life I was leaving behind—the years of torment, the child I had to protect, and the baby I had lost.“We’ll file this as soon as possible,” Alex said, his voice firm but kind. “You’re said you want for custody of Josh and 50% of Aaron’s properties. That’s fair, considering what you’ve endured.”I nodded, my throat too tight to respond.Alex walked me to Aaron’s office, where the confrontation was inevitable. Aaron was leaning back in his chair, his expression one of smug indifference as Alex handed him the papers.“You’re making a mistake,” Aaron said coldly, his eyes flicking from the documents to Alex. “Stay out of this, Alex. This is my family, my business.”Alex’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t back down. “Your family?” he sc
Chapter 3Aaron’s house was packed with mourners dressed in somber shades of black, murmuring condolences and exchanging hushed whispers. The air was thick with the scent of fresh lilies and the weight of fabricated grief. A large, framed photograph of Miranda rested on an easel, her smile frozen in time—a cruel contrast to the lies being spread about her even in death.Aaron stood at the center of the gathering, playing the role of the grieving husband. His voice carried a false tremor as he addressed the room. “Thank you all for coming,” he began, dabbing at his dry eyes with a handkerchief. “This has been a difficult time for me and my family. Miranda… she was troubled in the end. I suspect she was having an affair, and when she couldn’t handle the guilt, she ran off to meet her lover. I don’t know who killed her, but I will ensure justice is served.”Gasps rippled through the crowd, and Aaron’s mother, Clara, placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. His sisters, Lilian and Grace,
Chapter 4I opened my eyes to the faint hum of machines and the sterile scent of antiseptic. My head felt heavy, like I’d been dragged through a fog I couldn’t escape. Blinking slowly, I stared at the ceiling, unfamiliar and cold. A quiet beeping sound echoed in the room, steady and rhythmic, grounding me in the present.Where am I?I tried to sit up, but a sharp ache spread through my body, forcing me to stay still. Panic crept in as I looked around the room—white walls, a window with sheer curtains letting in soft light, and a man sitting beside me, his head bowed as though deep in thought.“Who…?” My voice came out weak, raspy. The man’s head snapped up, and his eyes—dark and intense—locked onto mine.“Miranda,” he breathed, his voice filled with relief. “You’re awake.”I frowned, my heart racing. “Who are you? Miranda…That’s my name?”His expression shifted, a flicker of pain crossing his face. “It’s me, Alex,” he said gently, leaning closer. “Don’t you remember?Yes…You are Mirand
The room was dim, illuminated only by the soft glow of a desk lamp where Alex worked silently. The sound of his pen scratching against paper filled the air, but his attention kept drifting toward Miranda, asleep on the hospital bed. Her chest rose and fell in steady rhythm, her face peaceful—a fragile moment of calm after months of torment.Suddenly, a sharp scream shattered the stillness.Alex’s head shot up, his heart racing. Miranda bolted upright in bed, her face drenched in sweat, her eyes wide with terror. “No! Stop!” she screamed, clutching her head. Her breathing came in ragged gasps, her body trembling uncontrollably.“Miranda!” Alex was at her side in an instant, his hands on her shoulders, steadying her. “Mira, it’s okay. You’re safe. I’m here.”Tears streamed down her face as she looked at him, her voice breaking. “I remembered,” she choked out. “I remembered everything, Alex. It all came back… the years of pain, the beatings, the lies… and that night—Aaron fired those sho
Chapter 6:The drip I had ripped out earlier now fixed back in place. My body was still too weak, rejecting the medication. I turned to the other side of the bed, sobbing quietly. The door creaked open, and Alex walked in. To be honest, I didn’t want to talk to anyone right now. My head was pounding, and I was overwhelmed with confusion.“Hey… Are you alright?” Alex asked softly, but I didn’t respond. I was holding back my tears, unable to bring myself to look at him.“Mira, are you crying?”“No, I’m not…” I managed to say, choking on my own tears.“What’s wrong?” Alex pressed gently.I wiped my tears and finally turned to face him. “What’s wrong? Alex… I was pushed down the stairs. My son watched me struggle for breath in a pool of my own blood. I lost my baby, got divorced, and my ex-husband tried to kill me. I have no idea where my son is… Why did I even survive?”I broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. Alex said nothing at first, silently watching me cry for what felt like hours. Fi
Chapter 7. Alex sat at the far end of the large dining hall, his eyes fixed on Josh, who looked small and frail in the oversized chair. The boy’s face was pale, his eyes tired, and he seemed to have lost weight. The family event hadn’t officially begun yet, and Aaron along with the rest of the family, was too busy to notice. Alex , however, couldn’t take his eyes off Josh. When he saw the boy wipe a tear from his cheek, Alex got up and walked over to him. He crouched down so they were at eye level.“Hey, buddy, are you okay?” Alex asked gently.Josh hesitated, then burst into quiet tears. “I miss my mummy,” he whispered, his voice trembling. “I want to be with her, but I can’t…because she’s dead.”Alex’s heart clenched. He wanted to tell Josh the truth, to let him know that Mira was alive, but he couldn’t—not yet. Instead, he placed a comforting hand on the boy’s shoulder. “I know you miss her. She loves you so much, Josh. She wouldn’t want you to be sad.”Josh sniffled, his tiny han
Chapter 8Alex had planned to head straight to the hospital, but halfway there, he made a U-turn. There was something more pressing to take care of.Mira’s family lawyer. For years, Mira had lived under Aaron’s control, believing every word he told her. Aaron had convinced her that her parents hadn’t left her anything when they died, claiming their family’s debts had wiped out whatever was left. She never questioned it, never looked into it herself. She was too wrapped up in Aaron’s lies and manipulation. But Alex didn’t buy it. He knew Aaron too well to trust a single thing he said, and if Mira was going to reclaim her life, she needed to have a strong foundation—financially and socially. He pulled up outside the lawyer’s office. The man had agreed to meet with him on short notice, but Alex knew this wasn’t going to be an easy conversation. He straightened his jacket, taking a deep breath before stepping inside. The lawyer, an older man with graying hair and a stern expression, greet
I stared at Alex, my mind racing, completely thrown by the two words he’d just said.“Marry me.”The words hung in the air, heavy and strange. My lips parted, but no sound came out. I didn’t know what to say, let alone what to think. When I didn’t answer, Alex shifted in his seat, his expression softening. “Listen,” he said, his tone calm but serious. “I’ve been thinking about ways to bring you back—to make your return impactful. Right now, Aaron is parading my ex-fiancée as his new woman, trying to erase your place in his life like you never existed. We need something big, something that puts you back in control.”I tilted my head, unsure where he was going with this.“So,” Alex continued, leaning forward slightly, “why don’t we stage a fake engagement? If I introduce you as my fiancée, it’ll turn Aaron’s little act into a joke. It’ll make people question everything he’s said about you. And trust me, nothing would hurt his ego more than seeing you with me.”The words hit me like a pu
Mira’s heart raced as she clutched Josh’s hand tightly, her fingers trembling from fear. The woods were silent except for the occasional rustle of leaves in the breeze. It was cold—too cold—and the night seemed to stretch on endlessly. She looked around, trying to find any sign of help, but the dense trees and thick fog obscured everything beyond a few feet.Josh was quiet beside her, his small frame shivering. He had been through so much already, and now Mira had to protect him, even if it meant risking her own life. She pulled him closer to her, trying to shield him from the chill, but her thoughts kept drifting back to what had happened before they ended up here. Two men had burst into their house, guns pointed at Josh, taking them both against their will. The flashbacks were vivid—Mira had screamed, had fought, but it was useless. They shot two of Alex’s security guards and dragged her and Josh out of the house. Her worst fears had come to life in that instant, and now they were h
Alex’s POVAlex paced around his office, his mind running wild with anxiety and frustration. Mira and Josh were gone, and the more he tried to track them down, the more the trail seemed to fade. His men were searching every inch of the city, every corner of their contacts, but there were no signs of them—no leads, no calls, just complete silence. His fingers tightened around the edge of his desk, the weight of the situation pressing on him harder than anything he had ever experienced.Who would do this? Who would dare take Mira and Josh? The questions rattled through his mind. He had powerful enemies, sure, but none of them would have the audacity to go after his family—his real family, the ones who mattered. And if it was someone who had been watching from the shadows, how did they even know how much Mira meant to him now?Just as his thoughts spiraled deeper into confusion, his phone buzzed sharply, interrupting his frustration. The unknown number that flashed on his screen gave him
Mira’s POVJosh’s cries were the only sound keeping me from losing my mind.He clung to me, his little fingers digging into my arm as he sobbed, his body trembling against mine.“M-mom, I’m scared,” he whimpered, his voice breaking.I swallowed the lump in my throat, forcing myself to be strong. If I broke down now, it would only make things worse.“I know, baby. I know,” I whispered, tightening my grip on him. “But you have to stay calm, okay? No matter what happens, don’t say anything. Don’t cry too loud. Just… just listen to me.”He nodded against my shoulder, sniffling, trying his best to be brave. The men in the front of the car barely paid attention to us, speaking in hushed voices to each other as they drove. I couldn’t see their faces clearly, but their towering frames and rough voices were enough to terrify me.The car smelled like smoke and sweat, and the air was suffocating. My hands were tied behind my back with thick rope, making it impossible to hold Josh properly, but I
Mira’s POVA loud bang shattered the silence. My body froze. That sound—I knew it too well. It was the same sound I heard the night I was attacked years ago. Before I could react, the door burst open, and two hefty men stormed in. My heart slammed against my ribs.Josh.They had guns. And they were pointed straight at him.“Mommy?” Josh whimpered, his little hands gripping his toy car.“No!” I screamed, stepping in front of him. “Please, don’t—”One of the men grabbed me roughly, yanking me backward. Josh shrieked as the other man lifted him off the ground like a sack of rice.“Let go of my son!” I thrashed against my captor, kicking and clawing, but his grip was like iron.“Shut her up,” one of them growled.Something hard slammed against my temple. Pain exploded in my head, and my vision blurred.No. No. No.I felt myself being dragged outside. The cold air hit my skin, but it did nothing to clear the fog in my head. Then I saw them.Alex’s security guards. Two of them. Lying lifele
Mira’s POVThe second I answered the call, a voice on the other end spoke before I could say anything.“I’ve been expecting your call.”I exchanged a quick glance with Alex, who immediately leaned closer, listening intently. My grip tightened around the phone.“Who is this?” I asked cautiously. The man chuckled. “The guy you’ve been searching for.”Alex immediately caught on. He mouthed Aaron’s financial adviser?I kept my voice steady. “You worked for Aaron?”“Yes. And I know everything you want to know,” he said. “But there’s one condition.”I could already guess what was coming.“I need to remain anonymous,” he continued. “No names, no connections, nothing that ties back to me.”I hesitated. This was huge—someone on the inside willing to talk. But could I trust him? What if he was baiting me into a trap?Alex motioned for me to put the call on speaker, and I did.“You don’t want your name involved?” Alex asked. “Then why reach out?”The man sighed. “Because I know what Aaron is cap
Mira’s POVAs we stepped outside, the cold night air was a welcome relief from the suffocating tension inside. I had barely taken a few steps toward the car when I heard someone call my name.“Mira!”I turned just in time to see one of Aaron’s cousins rushing toward me. She was a little out of breath, her eyes darting around as if making sure no one was watching her. Before I could ask what was going on, she slipped a small piece of paper into my hand. “Call him,” she whispered urgently. “He has a lot you’d want to know.”I frowned and looked at the number scribbled on it. “Who is this?”She hesitated, glancing over her shoulder. “Someone who knows things about Aaron. Things you should know.”That caught my attention. “What kind of things?”She shook her head. “I don’t want to get involved. Just call him. And Mira…” She smiled slightly. “I’m happy you got out of that marriage. And that you’re with Alex. He suits you better.”I blinked in surprise. Of all the reactions I had gotten ton
Mira’s POVThe morning of the family event came faster than I wanted. If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have attended at all, but Aaron had sent a reminder message, probably hoping to intimidate me into showing up. I wasn’t the same woman he used to control. If anything, this was the perfect opportunity to make a statement.I focused on getting Josh ready first, helping him with his little tuxedo. “You look so handsome,” I said, adjusting his bow tie.Josh grinned. “I know,” he said confidently. “But why do I have to wear this? It’s too tight.”“Because it’s a formal event,” I said. “Besides, you match with Alex.”At that moment, Alex walked in, dressed in a sleek black tuxedo. He took one look at Josh, then at me, and smirked. “Did we all just decide to ignore the dress code?”I turned back to the mirror and admired my red dress. It was bold, fiery, and a complete rebellion against the expected white. “I guess so,” I said, shrugging. “White isn’t really my color.”Josh laughed. “Dad’s
Mira’s POVThe house was quiet when I walked in, the kind of silence that made the weight of the day feel even heavier. The plans, the secrets, the moves I had just started to make—it was all swirling in my mind like a storm. But there was one thing I needed to do before I could let the chaos take over. I needed to talk to Alex.I found him in the living room, leaning back on the couch, his eyes glued to his phone. His usual calm was there, but I could tell something was bothering him. Maybe it was the pressure of everything happening with Aaron or the shadows from his past that still seemed to haunt him.“Hey,” I said softly, sitting next to him. “We need to talk.”He looked up at me, his gaze steady. “What’s going on?”I took a deep breath, my thoughts scattered. But I started from the beginning, telling him everything that had happened with the two investors—how they’d come to me, their plans for a hostile takeover, and how they’d been waiting for the right moment.“They said they’
Mira’s POVOlivia had left earlier with a promise to get back to me with some information. When she called me back, her voice was different, a little more unsure than usual.“Mira, I’m not sure about this. It feels like everything is moving so fast, and I can’t help but wonder if we can trust these men.” Olivia’s words lingered in the air as I leaned back in my chair. The weight of the situation had started to settle over me.I knew exactly what she meant. It felt too good to be true that these men—who had been a part of Aaron’s inner circle, who had supported him for so long—were suddenly on my side. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that if this was going to happen, I needed to take control and handle it the way I always did: strategically.“Olivia, show me the reports,” I said, my voice firm but calm. There was a brief pause on the other end of the line before Olivia responded. “Okay, I’ll have someone bring them to you. Just… Mira, make sure you’re really ready
