The room was dim, illuminated only by the soft glow of a desk lamp where Alex worked silently. The sound of his pen scratching against paper filled the air, but his attention kept drifting toward Miranda, asleep on the hospital bed. Her chest rose and fell in steady rhythm, her face peaceful—a fragile moment of calm after months of torment.

Suddenly, a sharp scream shattered the stillness.

Alex’s head shot up, his heart racing. Miranda bolted upright in bed, her face drenched in sweat, her eyes wide with terror. “No! Stop!” she screamed, clutching her head. Her breathing came in ragged gasps, her body trembling uncontrollably.

“Miranda!” Alex was at her side in an instant, his hands on her shoulders, steadying her. “Mira, it’s okay. You’re safe. I’m here.”

Tears streamed down her face as she looked at him, her voice breaking. “I remembered,” she choked out. “I remembered everything, Alex. It all came back… the years of pain, the beatings, the lies… and that night—Aaron fired those shots. I saw it all.”

Alex froze, his heart sinking. He knew this moment would come, but seeing her like this—broken, yet fighting to stand tall—was unbearable.

She grabbed his hands, her grip desperate. “You did it, Alex,” she sobbed. “You saved my life. You gave me another chance to live after Aaron had taken everything. I don’t know how I forgot, but for once in ten years, I lived without the shadow of him haunting me.”

“Mira…” Alex whispered, his throat tight.

She pulled her hands away and buried her face in them, her body wracked with sobs. “How could I have forgotten?” she cried, her voice laced with anguish. “How could I forget Josh, the son I left behind? How could I forget the monster I married? I was grateful, Alex—for a brief moment, I lived without knowing him. But now… it’s all back. Every blow, every scream, every time he made me feel worthless.”

Alex sat beside her, his voice low, filled with regret. “Mira, you didn’t forget because you were weak. You forgot because your mind needed to heal. It was your body’s way of protecting you from breaking completely.”

She lifted her tear-streaked face to him, her eyes wild. “Where is Josh?”

Alex hesitated, his expression darkening.

“Tell me, Alex!” she demanded, her voice rising. “Where is my son?”

He exhaled heavily, his gaze dropping to the floor. “He’s with Aaron,” he said finally. “I tried, Mira. I tried to take him away, but Aaron has too much power. He’s not the man I once called my brother. He and his new girlfriend—” Alex’s voice caught, his fists clenching. “They don’t treat Josh right. He’s thin, Mira. He looks tired and scared. I failed you… I failed him.”

Miranda’s breath hitched, her heart shattering at the image of her son suffering. She ripped the IV drip from her arm and swung her legs off the bed. “I’m going to get him,” she declared, her voice firm despite the tears streaming down her face. “I don’t care what it takes. I won’t let my son suffer another moment under that man’s roof.”

Alex grabbed her arm before she could take another step, his voice sharp. “Miranda, stop!”

She struggled against his grip, her voice cracking. “Let me go, Alex! I’m taking my son!”

“You can’t just show up like this,” he said, his tone firm but pained. “You’re still weak, and Aaron won’t let you take Josh so easily. You need a plan.”

She spun to face him, her eyes blazing. “A plan? Do you know what it’s like to see your son’s face every night in your dreams and wake up knowing he’s suffering? I don’t care if Aaron is your brother or my ex-husband. I want to make him suffer, Alex. I want him to bleed like I did. I want him to feel every ounce of the pain he inflicted on me!”

Alex’s jaw tightened, his own pain evident. “And you will, Mira. But not like this. If you walk in there now, he’ll win again. He’ll use the system, his power, everything against you. You can’t let your emotions control you.”

Miranda’s fists clenched, her chest heaving. “I don’t want to wait,” she whispered, her voice trembling with rage. “I want him to pay.”

Alex stepped closer, his voice soft but firm. “And he will,” he said. “Because I want him to suffer too. Do you think I’ve forgotten what he did to you? I warned him, Mira. I told him if he ever hurt you, he’d regret it. He didn’t just hurt you—he destroyed you. And now, we’ll destroy him.”

Her tear-filled eyes met his, her resolve hardening. “How, Alex?”

He cupped her face gently, his thumb brushing away her tears. “We’ll get Josh back first. Then we’ll expose every dirty secret Aaron has buried. We’ll tear down his empire piece by piece until he has nothing left.”

Miranda’s voice was a whisper, but it carried the weight of her pain and determination. “I want him to beg, Alex. I want him to look me in the eyes and see the woman he tried to break. I want him to fear me.”

Alex nodded, his own resolve matching hers. “And he will, Mira. He’ll regret every moment he underestimated you. But we do this right. No mistakes, no rushing in blind.”

Miranda took a deep, shaky breath, her tears slowing. She wasn’t just a victim anymore—she was a mother, a fighter, and she was ready to reclaim everything Aaron had stolen.

“Let’s make him pay,” she said, her voice steady.

Alex smiled grimly. “We will.”
