Eva, come upstairs for a moment," Shawn said from their bedroom; his voice was warm yet laced with excitement.

Eva sat up, her fingers clenching on her phone, wherein she had been staring to catch another message from Samantha, nothing so far, it's been a week since she approved that fake report for her. She hasn't made any demands since then, not that she wanted her to, but the silence was itching, the tension just seemed to smother her. She was hedging from response with firm and even, light tones that sounded calm.

"What is happening?" she finally said, laying the phone down and rising from the couch.

"Just come," he said in light firm tones.

The stairs felt heavy as she rose up them, each riser heavier than the last. Surprises were the last thing she wanted at this moment. She could not afford surprises.

She entered the bedroom where Shawn stood beside the bed with a huge white box in front of him. He looked excited, his face wearing a genuine smile that sent her heart a

Ava, there you are!" A familiar voice cut through the murmurs of the crowd-quick, sharp. That voice was excited, yet her stomach twisted. She slowly turned around, a polite smile curling her lips, while inside her heart sank at the sight of him. Ryan, her cousin, who had been abroad for five years. His sudden appearance was like a bolt from the blue, and Eva felt that the fragile facade which she had carefully erected was in danger of shattering."Ryan!" she exclaimed, trying to inject enthusiasm into her voice.A wide grin spread over Ryan's face; his dark eyes sparkled. "I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw you from across the room! How long has it been? Two years? Three?" He pulled her into a tight hug so sudden that she was unprepared; firm, warm arms enveloped her. Ava stiffened in his arms, her gaze darting to Shawn's over Ryan's shoulder. He stared at them with his face unreadable, eyes glued. She suddenly felt conered. as though Ryan's arrival had finally put the limelight

"You're not Ava, are you?" The cut of Ryan's voice into the low hum of music stalled Eva on the spot. She swallowed hard as the world forced her around. Her lips twisted upward, a tight smile. "Ryan, what's wrong with you?" she lied her tone light as ever be. "You drank too much, didn't you?" He shook his head, his eyes narrowing slightly as a look of concern replaced amusement. "Don't do that. Don't divert. I have known you all my life, and when something is bothering you, you change. You are acting strange, you are not acting like yourself, you are not acting like Ava.” Her heart stopped. She was frozen, the weight of his words crashing over her. "I don't know what you're talking about," she whispered, barely able to get the words out. "Yes, you do." Ryan stepped closer, lowering his voice. "You're Eva, aren't you? Not Ava.” Her heart was pounding in her ears. She had tried so desperately to keep this secret, to act like everything was alright. And now Ryan was tearing through

"Is everything alright here?" Shawn cut in as sharp as a razor in the still night breeze, and its keen rim whipped up Eva's heartbeat like never before.Eva froze, her heart pounding in her ears. She could feel Shawn's eyes on her, waiting, watching. Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.Ryan spoke first, his tone as smooth and melodious. "Yeah, man," he said, shifting in front of Eva, "she had something in her eye, tearing up and stuff, so I was just trying to help her out." A casual reassuring smile was sent their way; this, of course, was nothing to worry about.Shawn’s gaze didn’t waver. His eyes flicked between them, suspicion clouding his features. “You okay now?” he asked, his voice deceptively even.Eva nodded quickly. “Yes, I’m fine.” Her voice was strained, but she forced a smile, praying it looked convincing.Shawn’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn’t push. “Good,” he said. “Let’s go.” He reached for her hand, his grip firm, almost too tight.Eva gave him a quick, plea

Eva sat at her desk, staring at the screen, but very far from where her report should have had her. Her fingers hung over the keyboard and did not move. This secret she kept inside her chest felt heavy, like a noose in the throat. Every day, juggling around, lying, shielding her family, acting as though everything was OK, was heavy.A light rap at the door brought her back to reality. She straightened and smoothed her face into a mask of composure. "Come in."The door opened, and Samantha strode in, her confident air donned like gloves, fitting her just so. She closed it softly behind her. White teeth glinted predatorily, and Eva's heartbeat quickened."Good morning, Eva," she said, every word dripping from her tongue in sweet saccharine.Eva's jaw clamped down; she knew that tone all too well. "What do you want, Samantha?"Samantha began into her slow pace toward the desk, heels clicking against the floor. "Is that how you greet a friend?Eva leaned back in her chair, steady with her

“You've really let me down, Samantha," Ryan said, his voice flat, cutting, his eyes cold as ice. He stepped inside, letting the door swing shut behind him with a muffled thud. She slowly turned around, narrowing her eyes. "Ryan," Samantha sneered, not taken by surprise at all. "Didn't anyone teach you not to interfere in other people's business?” He tuned a deaf ear to her, crossed the room, and set his frame between Samantha and Eva. The flex of his jaw reflected his anger in its brim. "This is definitely my business," he said cold as ice, "You stepped over a line. And I won't let yiu tear Evs down like this.” The smirk on Samantha's face fluttered once before her chin went up. "You think you can stop me? Please. Aren't you bored of always being the twins' white knight running to their rescue. It's pathetic." Ryan's eyes flashed darker. "Pathetic is extorting your best friend's sister. We were all friends, Samantha. We grew up together. How did it come to this?” Eva sat froz

“He personally sent an invitation to me and I promised him we'll be there. And you are refusing to go?" Eva's tone was neutral, but the dare in her eyes made Shawn halt. She stood by the window, arms crossed, watching him as he paced the length of their living room.He let out a deep sigh, running a hand through his hair. "It's complicated."Eva raised an eyebrow. “Complicated? That’s your explanation?” She took a step closer, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor. “Your grandfather invites us to a family dinner, and you’re acting like you’re being summoned to a war council.”Shawn stopped pacing, his gaze meeting hers. “I just don’t want to go.”“Well, we’re going.” Eva’s tone left no room for argument. She walked over to him, placing a hand on his chest. “It’s one dinner. How bad can it be?”Shawn stared at her, his jaw tightening. He wanted to tell her. He could see the curiosity burning in her eyes, but the words wouldn’t come. Not yet. “Fine,” he muttered. “We’ll go.”Eva

"You always did prefer moonlit escapes over facing your problems head-on."Shawn's spine straightened at the sound of Norman's voice behind him. He turned slowly, his hand instinctively tightening on Eva's. She felt the sudden shift in his energy and glanced between the two men. Norman stood in the doorway, his usual smug expression replaced by something more subdued, almost remorseful.“What do you want?” Shawn shot at him."I am not here to fight," Norman raised his hands in mock defeat. "I just want to talk."Shawn narrowed his eyes. "We talked enough, don't you think?" His voice was cold; every word was sharp and measured.Norman strode out onto the balcony as if Shawn's tense reception was none of his concern. He had glanced once, briefly, at Eva, then looked back at Shawn. He ran a hand through his hair. "Norman's audacity." He trailed off, his head shaking in an attempt to remove the memory."You can't let him get to you like this," Eva said carefully, closing the door behind her.He turned sharply to face her, his eyes hard. "Ready for another tiring day, Mrs. Darlington?" Shawn teased, opening the car door for Eva, a wide grin on his face.Eva forced a small, weak smile and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Do i have a choice.” She replied in a tired tone. She stepped out of the car, holding her purse close to her side. The air was cool that morning, though the weight inside her chest had her feeling constricted. About to return to Shawn's cheerful banter, she suddenly froze.Ava leaned against her car casually, that bright smile of hers blazing like a spotlight toward them as she stood in the parking lot."Good morning!" Ava called cheerfully, her voice as sweet as sugar as she sauntered toward them.Eva's heart quickened as she found herself clutching at her purse. ‘What is she doing here?’"Eva!" Just as Shawn and Eva sat in the living room, chatting over their evening tea, the doorbell jingled. Their attention went to the main entrance as the sound came up. Madam Tess, ambled toward answering the door grumbling discontentedly with the uninvited guest. Eva's heart leaped high-she had been uptight all day, waiting for Ava's next move. She tightened her grip on the teacup while her stomach churned. “Who could this be at this hour? Are you expecting someone?”"Relax," Shawn said, chuckling at her rigid pose. "It's probably a deliveryman; someone must have sent something.” Then they heard the door open and Madam Tess's voice full of surprise: "Oh! Miss Eva, what a lovely surprise."Eva's blood froze. She put down her tea on the table, trembling; that rattling sound very loud against the stillness of the room. ‘What's she doing here?’Shawn's head jolted, a brilliant smile lighting up his face. "Ma'am, are you all right? You've been staring at that screen for ten minutes now," Amelia, one of her employees who brought a report to her office, ventured to ask warmly.Blinking a few times, Eva forced a bright smile onto her face as she quickly minimized the open blank document on her computer that she had seemed to be working on. "I'm fine," she said, but her tone wasn’t convincing. And dismissed her.She was not okay. The storm brewing in her mind for the last couple of days crashed on her ceaselessly. Every time she met Shawn's gaze, her gut roiled with overwhelming guilt and hurt seriously gnawing at her insides. He had slept with her sister, cheated on her without realising, and she couldn't do anything. Her hands had formed into fists under the desk. “It wasn't his fault,” she reminded herself for what must have been the hundredth time. “He didn't know. "They think they can control me" Ava growled low in her throat, pacing the small hotel room. Her heels clicked against the floor, her anger simmering, threatening to boil over at any moment. She came to a stop, hands clenching on the edge of the desk in front of her. Her reflection stared back at her from the mirror over it, green eyes wild with frustration and hurt. And in Ava's head, those words re-echoed in her mind in an endless feedback-the words deeply engraving in her mind one word after another."You're a disappointment. You dragged the family name in the mud. You've done enough damage.”She snorted, her voice thick with resentful arguments so bitter. "I've done enough damage? Really?" Ava shook her head, the laugh that finally came out seemingly cutting her throat. "Eva stole everything from me, and I am the one that's done enough damage? It was injustice, seared in fire, and she found no room for reason. She hunched backward into her chair, shaking, her hands covering her fa

Eva slumped onto the couch in the living room. Immediately, she was convulsed by unchained sobs as her composure snapped into a thousand pieces. Hiding her face between shaking hands, that tidal wave of reality engulfed her-cold-blooded betrayal by a sister."I just can't believe it," Eva whispered, her voice breaking at last. "She's going to ruin everything… everything I worked hard to build. She'll destroy my life.”Eleanor fell on her knees beside her daughter and laid a reassuring hand on her knee. "Eva, sweetheart, don't cry; we'll work this out.”"Sort this out?" Eva's head jerked up, her tear-streaked face contorted in a grimace of anguish. "How, Mother? Ava drove up the driveway in Eva's sleek car up to the mansion looming ahead-the Wadsley mansion. Her fingers around the steering wheel tightened with each second passing while her heart was pounding, yet not a ripple crossed her face. She didn't want to show them that she was scared. Inside, Eva stood at her window in her silk robe and watched the car pull in. There she saw her twin sister driving in behind the wheel of her car. She felt her blood boil as she stormed out of the house, heels clattering on the marble floor.Scarcely had Ava stepped out of the car when Eva descended upon her, a mask of fury upon her face.“How dare you?" Eva's voice cut through cold morning air. "You went out with Shawn and spent the night at his house, our house, and you waltz up in here in my car like nothing's wrong?"Ava got out of the car, shut the door with calculated calm, her face unreadable. Thin curtain shades allowed morning sun to streak the room in patches of gold. Ava stirred, weighed down by exhaustion, yet her mind was in a marathon leading to the opening of her eyes. And then all the pieces fit together-the way Shawn had touched her, the things he said, the manner in which he had looked at her like she was the only female on this earth. She turned her head slightly, and her gaze fell on Shawn's sleeping form beside her, with his arm possessively flung across her waist. 'It really happened' -the thought slammed her heart against her chest. The phone lying next to the bed slicing through the silence of the room. She carefully reached to get it-not wanting Shawn to wake. The screen blinked through texts and calls-all from Eva and her mom and dad."Ava, call me right this minute!""What the hell are you doing with Shawn?""Do you know what kind of mess you're putting us in?" "She's not coming back, is she?" Eva's voice shook, pacing the length of her parents' living room, fists clenched. She could hardly hold back the burning rage that ran through her veins. "Can you imagine what she's doing, Mom? She is with my husband at this very moment. Pretending to be me!"Her mother, Eleanor Wadsley, waved airily from the couch. "Eva, be still. Ava would do nothing to hurt you. She is your sister—"Don't say that!" Eva snapped, whirling to glare at her mother. "She is not the Ava we used to know. She's selfish, conniving, and… and she doesn't care who she hurts anymore. She left Shawn on the altar, remember? She didn't want him, and now she's back acting like she can just waltz into my life and take everything from me!"The scowl on Eleanor's face softened to concern. "She's still your twin, Eva. Whatever is happening there has to be a reason. Maybe she just-""Don't make excuses!" Eva exclaimed sharply, her voice rising. "You don't understand-she isn't just 'being

"How is she so shameless?" Ava muttered as she viewed from the second floor window of the company building. She laughed, the sound light and warm, and set a hand to his arm as she said something Ava couldn't hear. Shawn laughed at it.Jealousy, like fire, had burned within Ava as her chest felt constricted, her fists clutching into the sill. That was supposed to be her life. She should be experiencing this happiness. If only she hadn't run away on that wedding day, it would be her, he adored now.‘You gave that all up, Ava,’ said the bitter voice within her mind, ‘but that does not mean that you can't take it back.’The thought sat there, all dark and alluring.
