Eva, come upstairs for a moment," Shawn said from their bedroom; his voice was warm yet laced with excitement.

Eva sat up, her fingers clenching on her phone, wherein she had been staring to catch another message from Samantha, nothing so far, it's been a week since she approved that fake report for her. She hasn't made any demands since then, not that she wanted her to, but the silence was itching, the tension just seemed to smother her. She was hedging from response with firm and even, light tones that sounded calm.

"What is happening?" she finally said, laying the phone down and rising from the couch.

"Just come," he said in light firm tones.

The stairs felt heavy as she rose up them, each riser heavier than the last. Surprises were the last thing she wanted at this moment. She could not afford surprises.

She entered the bedroom where Shawn stood beside the bed with a huge white box in front of him. He looked excited, his face wearing a genuine smile that sent her heart a

Ava, there you are!" A familiar voice cut through the murmurs of the crowd-quick, sharp. That voice was excited, yet her stomach twisted. She slowly turned around, a polite smile curling her lips, while inside her heart sank at the sight of him. Ryan, her cousin, who had been abroad for five years. His sudden appearance was like a bolt from the blue, and Eva felt that the fragile facade which she had carefully erected was in danger of shattering."Ryan!" she exclaimed, trying to inject enthusiasm into her voice.A wide grin spread over Ryan's face; his dark eyes sparkled. "I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw you from across the room! How long has it been? Two years? Three?" He pulled her into a tight hug so sudden that she was unprepared; firm, warm arms enveloped her. Ava stiffened in his arms, her gaze darting to Shawn's over Ryan's shoulder. He stared at them with his face unreadable, eyes glued. She suddenly felt conered. as though Ryan's arrival had finally put the limelight

"You're not Ava, are you?" The cut of Ryan's voice into the low hum of music stalled Eva on the spot. She swallowed hard as the world forced her around. Her lips twisted upward, a tight smile. "Ryan, what's wrong with you?" she lied her tone light as ever be. "You drank too much, didn't you?" He shook his head, his eyes narrowing slightly as a look of concern replaced amusement. "Don't do that. Don't divert. I have known you all my life, and when something is bothering you, you change. You are acting strange, you are not acting like yourself, you are not acting like Ava.” Her heart stopped. She was frozen, the weight of his words crashing over her. "I don't know what you're talking about," she whispered, barely able to get the words out. "Yes, you do." Ryan stepped closer, lowering his voice. "You're Eva, aren't you? Not Ava.” Her heart was pounding in her ears. She had tried so desperately to keep this secret, to act like everything was alright. And now Ryan was tearing through

"Is everything alright here?" Shawn cut in as sharp as a razor in the still night breeze, and its keen rim whipped up Eva's heartbeat like never before.Eva froze, her heart pounding in her ears. She could feel Shawn's eyes on her, waiting, watching. Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.Ryan spoke first, his tone as smooth and melodious. "Yeah, man," he said, shifting in front of Eva, "she had something in her eye, tearing up and stuff, so I was just trying to help her out." A casual reassuring smile was sent their way; this, of course, was nothing to worry about.Shawn’s gaze didn’t waver. His eyes flicked between them, suspicion clouding his features. “You okay now?” he asked, his voice deceptively even.Eva nodded quickly. “Yes, I’m fine.” Her voice was strained, but she forced a smile, praying it looked convincing.Shawn’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn’t push. “Good,” he said. “Let’s go.” He reached for her hand, his grip firm, almost too tight.Eva gave him a quick, plea

Eva sat at her desk, staring at the screen, but very far from where her report should have had her. Her fingers hung over the keyboard and did not move. This secret she kept inside her chest felt heavy, like a noose in the throat. Every day, juggling around, lying, shielding her family, acting as though everything was OK, was heavy.A light rap at the door brought her back to reality. She straightened and smoothed her face into a mask of composure. "Come in."The door opened, and Samantha strode in, her confident air donned like gloves, fitting her just so. She closed it softly behind her. White teeth glinted predatorily, and Eva's heartbeat quickened."Good morning, Eva," she said, every word dripping from her tongue in sweet saccharine.Eva's jaw clamped down; she knew that tone all too well. "What do you want, Samantha?"Samantha began into her slow pace toward the desk, heels clicking against the floor. "Is that how you greet a friend?Eva leaned back in her chair, steady with her

“You've really let me down, Samantha," Ryan said, his voice flat, cutting, his eyes cold as ice. He stepped inside, letting the door swing shut behind him with a muffled thud. She slowly turned around, narrowing her eyes. "Ryan," Samantha sneered, not taken by surprise at all. "Didn't anyone teach you not to interfere in other people's business?” He tuned a deaf ear to her, crossed the room, and set his frame between Samantha and Eva. The flex of his jaw reflected his anger in its brim. "This is definitely my business," he said cold as ice, "You stepped over a line. And I won't let yiu tear Evs down like this.” The smirk on Samantha's face fluttered once before her chin went up. "You think you can stop me? Please. Aren't you bored of always being the twins' white knight running to their rescue. It's pathetic." Ryan's eyes flashed darker. "Pathetic is extorting your best friend's sister. We were all friends, Samantha. We grew up together. How did it come to this?” Eva sat froz

“He personally sent an invitation to me and I promised him we'll be there. And you are refusing to go?" Eva's tone was neutral, but the dare in her eyes made Shawn halt. She stood by the window, arms crossed, watching him as he paced the length of their living room.He let out a deep sigh, running a hand through his hair. "It's complicated."Eva raised an eyebrow. “Complicated? That’s your explanation?” She took a step closer, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor. “Your grandfather invites us to a family dinner, and you’re acting like you’re being summoned to a war council.”Shawn stopped pacing, his gaze meeting hers. “I just don’t want to go.”“Well, we’re going.” Eva’s tone left no room for argument. She walked over to him, placing a hand on his chest. “It’s one dinner. How bad can it be?”Shawn stared at her, his jaw tightening. He wanted to tell her. He could see the curiosity burning in her eyes, but the words wouldn’t come. Not yet. “Fine,” he muttered. “We’ll go.”Eva

"You always did prefer moonlit escapes over facing your problems head-on."Shawn's spine straightened at the sound of Norman's voice behind him. He turned slowly, his hand instinctively tightening on Eva's. She felt the sudden shift in his energy and glanced between the two men. Norman stood in the doorway, his usual smug expression replaced by something more subdued, almost remorseful.“What do you want?” Shawn shot at him."I am not here to fight," Norman raised his hands in mock defeat. "I just want to talk."Shawn narrowed his eyes. "We talked enough, don't you think?" His voice was cold; every word was sharp and measured.Norman strode out onto the balcony as if Shawn's tense reception was none of his concern. He had glanced once, briefly, at Eva, then looked back at Shawn. He ran a hand through his hair. "Norman's audacity." He trailed off, his head shaking in an attempt to remove the memory."You can't let him get to you like this," Eva said carefully, closing the door behind her.He turned sharply to face her, his eyes hard. “Lets see what you are up to, Ava.” Ryan said under his breath, hands on the steering wheel as his eyes dart merrily between the rearview mirror and the restaurant across the road. The engine of his car idled gently, its low hum hardly noticeable over the thrashing in his chest. Almost an hour had passed since he had been sitting there, his head turned on Ava, who was inside the café stirring her unattended coffee. His phone buzzed on the passenger seat, and he grabbed it quickly. It was a message from Shawn. Shawn: "Keep your eyes on her; we must figure out where she's taking that money to.”Ryan exhaled, his jaw tightened. He thought relentlessly, typing back a brief response. Ryan: "I'm still watching. She hasn't made a move yet." He set the phone down and tapped his fingers nervously on the top of the steering wheel. Two half-million-dollar withdrawals, and she's merely sipping coffee? It didn't seem right. There's something up.Ava rose from the chair moments later, her chai

Shawn's voice was quiet but fraught with stress as he slumped on the mahogany desk, his jaw clenched with each word;"Are you quite certain about this, Ryan? ".His fingers drummed on the polished surface of the table, a perturbed beat that exposed his anxiety as he sat across from him. “I wouldn't have not come to you if I wasn't. Ava is hiding something, I've been investigating and watching her myself.” Shawn's eyebrows furrowed tightly. The poorly lit study gave them privacy, its thick drapes shutting out the rest of the world, but it did little to relax the weight bearing on Shawn. “You're claiming she poisoned Eva, Ryan. I still can't believe Ava would do that. Even Eva doesn't believe it. Because Ava has no reason to do that.” Ryan let out a nasty sigh, anger rippling across him. "I know you both are finding it hard to believe, but according to Eva's testimony, she is our only suspect.Ryan narrowed his eyes at Shawn, who looked disturbed. “Eva told me she overheard Ava's conve

Ava murmured over the phone, voice chilly and indifferent, "I can't come today either."Shawn's exasperated voice came over the speaker to say, "Ava, what's going on? You keep giving excuses not to come home. Talk to me if something is bothering you.”"Shawn, I'm not giving excuses. I have a lot of work to do and my parents' place is the closest, because I've been working late these days. Please try to understand. " Ava hung up without waiting for his response and flung her phone onto her disorganized desk. The setting sun had long gone down, so Wadsleys Jewels were gently aglow from the office lights. Scattered about Ava's desk were financial records and client files, but none of them really had her attention. She was off, trapped in a hurricane of anxiety and stress. Trying to relieve the increasing headache, she rubbed her temples. She didn't bother to check when her phone buzzed again. She already knew it was Shawn.Eva and her mother had also been trying to talk to her, but th

"Miss Wadsley, you must tell us everything you remember. It will be very useful for the investigation.” Detective Harris' voice cut through the heavy tension of the hospital room. Eva moved a little on the hospital bed, and the sterile sheet felt rigid and itchy against her skin. Eleanor Wadsley, her mother, sat on the edge of Evas bed with Eva hand clenched in hers like a lifeline. Richard Wadsley paced like an anguished lion across the room, anger seeping from every powerful stomp crashing across the ceramic floor. Shawn was standing stiffly in the corner beside Ryan, with his arms crossed over his chest and his eyes fixed on Eva's pallid face, his jaw was clenched, and the muscles twitched gently. Every moment of her silence only appeared to drive the cyclone building beyond his chilling eyes. Ryan squirmed next to him, rubbing his neck back and forth; his irritation practically evident throughout the questioning. "Miss Wadsley," Detective Harris said with a firm but gentle

Apart from the faint beep of the heart monitor, the hospital room was eerily quiet. Sitting in the chair next Eva's bed, Shawn watched her weak body resting against the white hospital sheets his fingers interlocked. Though the steady rise and fall of her chest comforted him, it did not lighten the suffocating weight of emotions he felt. He had been sitting there for hours, waiting for her to wake up, waiting for a solution. The doctor had told him that she'll regain consciousness soon. Eleanor had left a few moments ago telling him that she had to make food for Eva when she woke up. She thanked him for staying beside her. He was lost in the memories of the past they shared together, the betrayal, lies and the pain of their divorce. The news of her pregnancy was the shock of it all. Resting his elbows on his knees, he sighed deeply and his fingers twitched. Since Ryan laid everything out, his head has been spinning with questions. ‘Why didn't she tell me?’He ought to have realized

Ava's eyes were filled with fury as she walked completely into the apartment; she still couldn't believe what was before her eyes. Startled by the unexpected interruption, Samantha jumped from the sofa. It was irritation rather than fear that swished over her face; she knew Ava would come screaming at her door, sooner or later. Ava took a deep breath. “What is Norman Darlington doing here?” Her eyes returned to Samantha, mock screaming on her like a tidal wave. "Sam, I asked what is going on here?” Crossing her legs and sitting back against the couch, Samantha smirked. "I was wondering how long it would take you to solve it.” She said smoothly.Ava clenches her fists. "You have been working together?” Samantha breathed out deeply, head tilted. “Why else would he be here? Quit asking obvious questions Ava, you look stupid.” A wave of sickness swept Ava. Shawn drove behind his parent's car as they drove into the parking space of their mansion. He knew his father was trying to keep his cool and not cause a scene in front of the Wadsleys when they almost lost their daughter. His father went in without waiting for him. Shawn took a deep breath before walking in to face his father. “Shawn, what in the world is happening? What was all that?” Henry Darlington asked with barely contained anger. Shawn tried to speak and calm his father down, but unfortunately, he had no words. He understood what his father felt, but he also felt the same way and didn't understand the mess he just got into. His thoughts replayed the doctor's words and Ryan's words. ‘Eva was truly pregnant, and it was his.And now his father is paranoid and angry about the fact that both twins are pregnant with his child. Shawn shrugged wearily. How exactly was he supposed to deal with this? He thought finding Eva unconscious in her office was worse until the doctor co

With clenched fists, Shawn strolled the space by the window. He wasn't saying much, he just wanted Eva to regain consciousness. She still has a lot to answer for, but the memories of how he found her almost lifeless on the floor made his heart sink. Ava went to sit and was stiff in the chair, hands shaking and rolled into fists in her lap. Ryan stood with his back against the wall, his mask like face dull, but the jaw clenched spoke volumes. Richard Wadsley and Eleanor Wadsley were seated together, their distorted heads twisted with horror and fury. Daine Darlington and Henry Darlington sat quietly, their red eyes flicking every which way. Eleanor shot from the chair, her voice quivering on the razor's ranks, "Doctor, what's the update now. How's my daughter?” Richard's deep voice asked, "Is she awake?" The doctor scanned the room. "Are you all the patient's family?” Shawn glared. "Why does any of this matter?
