Eva sat at her desk, staring at the screen, but very far from where her report should have had her. Her fingers hung over the keyboard and did not move. This secret she kept inside her chest felt heavy, like a noose in the throat. Every day, juggling around, lying, shielding her family, acting as though everything was OK, was heavy.

A light rap at the door brought her back to reality. She straightened and smoothed her face into a mask of composure. "Come in."

The door opened, and Samantha strode in, her confident air donned like gloves, fitting her just so. She closed it softly behind her. White teeth glinted predatorily, and Eva's heartbeat quickened.

"Good morning, Eva," she said, every word dripping from her tongue in sweet saccharine.

Eva's jaw clamped down; she knew that tone all too well. "What do you want, Samantha?"

Samantha began into her slow pace toward the desk, heels clicking against the floor. "Is that how you greet a friend?

“You've really let me down, Samantha," Ryan said, his voice flat, cutting, his eyes cold as ice. He stepped inside, letting the door swing shut behind him with a muffled thud. She slowly turned around, narrowing her eyes. "Ryan," Samantha sneered, not taken by surprise at all. "Didn't anyone teach you not to interfere in other people's business?” He tuned a deaf ear to her, crossed the room, and set his frame between Samantha and Eva. The flex of his jaw reflected his anger in its brim. "This is definitely my business," he said cold as ice, "You stepped over a line. And I won't let yiu tear Evs down like this.” The smirk on Samantha's face fluttered once before her chin went up. "You think you can stop me? Please. Aren't you bored of always being the twins' white knight running to their rescue. It's pathetic." Ryan's eyes flashed darker. "Pathetic is extorting your best friend's sister. We were all friends, Samantha. We grew up together. How did it come to this?” Eva sat froz

“He personally sent an invitation to me and I promised him we'll be there. And you are refusing to go?" Eva's tone was neutral, but the dare in her eyes made Shawn halt. She stood by the window, arms crossed, watching him as he paced the length of their living room.He let out a deep sigh, running a hand through his hair. "It's complicated."Eva raised an eyebrow. “Complicated? That’s your explanation?” She took a step closer, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor. “Your grandfather invites us to a family dinner, and you’re acting like you’re being summoned to a war council.”Shawn stopped pacing, his gaze meeting hers. “I just don’t want to go.”“Well, we’re going.” Eva’s tone left no room for argument. She walked over to him, placing a hand on his chest. “It’s one dinner. How bad can it be?”Shawn stared at her, his jaw tightening. He wanted to tell her. He could see the curiosity burning in her eyes, but the words wouldn’t come. Not yet. “Fine,” he muttered. “We’ll go.”Eva

"You always did prefer moonlit escapes over facing your problems head-on."Shawn's spine straightened at the sound of Norman's voice behind him. He turned slowly, his hand instinctively tightening on Eva's. She felt the sudden shift in his energy and glanced between the two men. Norman stood in the doorway, his usual smug expression replaced by something more subdued, almost remorseful.“What do you want?” Shawn shot at him."I am not here to fight," Norman raised his hands in mock defeat. "I just want to talk."Shawn narrowed his eyes. "We talked enough, don't you think?" His voice was cold; every word was sharp and measured.Norman strode out onto the balcony as if Shawn's tense reception was none of his concern. He had glanced once, briefly, at Eva, then looked back at Shawn. "I know I am the last person in this world you want to see, but I have got something to say, something that's overdue."Shawn crossed his arms over his chest and straightened: like he wasn't ready to have q co

“Are you still mad?” Eva’s voice cut through the silence as she unlocked the front door.Shawn didn’t respond. His jaw was set, tension radiating from every muscle in his body. He stepped inside, shrugging off his jacket and tossing it onto the back of a chair.Eva followed him, her eyes darting to him. She tried once more, this time softening her tone. "I'm sorry, you shouldn't have gone tonight. It stirred up too much, didn't it?"Shawn finally spoke. His voice was low and heavy with frustration. "I shouldn't have gone, period." He ran a hand through his hair. "Norman's audacity." He trailed off, his head shaking in an attempt to remove the memory."You can't let him get to you like this," Eva said carefully, closing the door behind her.He turned sharply to face her, his eyes hard. "You saw him, Ava. You heard him. He's acting like the victim, acting like an apology erases everything.""He looked genuine," Eva offered, keeping her voice steady, even though her pulse quickened. Eva's breath deepened, her heart racing in the search for words. Shawn's gaze was burning a hole in her skin, waiting for her answer, suspicion thick in the air that it nearly choked her.“Well,” Eva began slowly, her fingers nervously twisting the hem of her blouse. “Two years is a long time, Shawn. I’ve met a lot of people. Give me a second to remember…” She hesitated, pretending to think hard. She couldn’t afford to slip up. Not now.Shawn’s brow furrowed. “It shouldn’t be that hard to remember meeting someone like Norman.”"I'm trying," she said with a tight smile. "It's not like he left an indelible mark." She paused, then exhaled as though something had just risen to the surface of her memory. "Oh, yes. It was at a party. In Italy. I was there for an investor. Norman was at that party, too."Shawn's eyes narrowed. "A party?""Yes," Eva said, her voice now a little surer, the lie starting to take form. "It was a large gathering, very formal. Eva took a deep breath as her fingers tightened on the edge of the table while her eyes flickered to the clock. She wanted the meeting to run as fast as possible so she could call Ryan back. His frantic voice on the missed calls and that ominous text from earlier just wouldn't let go of her conscience. Yet, she couldn't get up and leave right now. “Ladies and gentlemen,” Eva started, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside, “today we’re unveiling our latest jewelry designs. The team has worked tirelessly to create a collection that embodies both elegance and innovation.”Then her design team came in, and with the board, they went through several dazzling slides of intricate necklaces, modern, bold rings, each one sparkling on the screen. The presentation was flawless and had the board members nodding, their interest sparked. Eva was supposed to feel proud to be on the receiving end of such impressed looks; today, she was so dislocated. Her mind fluttered to the tone of Ryan's vo

Ryan, open up!" Eva's hysterical voice rose shrill and pounding on the door of his apartment.A click sounded in the lock, and it creaked wide enough for Ryan's white haggard face to appear and, in an instant, drew Eva in and slammed shut the door.“Ryan, what's wrong? Eva's voice trailed off as she took in the disarray around her: papers were scattered across the floor, his laptop sat open on the table, the screen glowing with lines of emails and messages."They know, Eva," Ryan blurted, shaking. "They know about my transcript. It's over."Eva froze, furrowing her brow. "What are you talking about? What transcript?”Ryan ran a hand through his rumpled hair, pacing back and forth. "The one from high school. The fake one. The grades I-" He paused, the swallow audible in his throat. The sound of high heels clattering against the marble floor of Shawn Darlington's office was enough to yank him out from the mountainous piles of papers in front of him. He didn't look up. Already exhausted from all he had trudged through relating to the news explosion about the suit, the last thing he wanted was any interruption.“I don't have time for this," he grumbled, turning a page in the contract he was working on. "Whatever it is, schedule an appointment."The steps ceased and paused for a moment. Then, a voice cut through the silence. all soft, all gentle, but with the burden that stiffened his body in place."We need to talk, Shawn."His hold on the pen tightened. His teeth clenched. That voice. Ava or Eva. He couldn't tell who it was. Slowly, he raised his head.“Eva?” She closed her eyes in frustration before opening them again. “Its Ava. "Would it have gone otherwise if I told him sooner?”Eva spoke no louder than a whisper, words falling into the room like heavy fog. Sitting on the couch, drawing one knee to her chest, her fingers fidgeted nervously, twitching and twisting in material of the silk throw pillow in front of her. The delicate sunlight creeping through the grand window panes at the Wadsley mansion barely warmed the chill of dread pooling in her chest. Her mother, Eleanor, dropped softly into her seat beside Eva. Leaning forward, she tucked in a stray bit of Eva's dark hair into the hairclip behind the ear. A sympathetic yet very motherly-firm glance greeted Eva's eyes soft with the statement: "He'd still have been hurt, sweetheart. But he'd at least have heard it from you and not through your sister in that degrading manner.”Eva shivered with her breathing. "So either way, I would have been doomed."Her mum struggled to get the words: "You have made a mistake, Eva; instead of drowning in your guilty fee

His father's voice still echoed in his head from the call-cold, commanding, full of anger. when he uses that tone, things are definitely not looking good.Shawn's eyes squinted down. "Why are you here, Ava?" Shawn's cold, clipped voice finally broke the darkness of the silent living room as he stared at the woman standing in his view. His muscles were tautly coiled as though his fists clenched at his sides held him in a restraint from heaving something or somebody out of his house.Ava fidgeted from foot to foot, and suddenly her eyes were brimming in readiness for all manner of untoward moisture. "Shawn, just please," she ventured softly, shaking at first. "I came to explain what really happened, since I actually wasn't trying to make the matter worse.”"The truth?" Shawn mocked, almost bitter. He moved a step closer to her, his form towering above her. "You are several months too late for that, Ava. You should have said the truth before you and your sister decided to make a fool out of me.""I didn't-" Ava tried saying, but Shawn cut her off.“Save it." "Mr. Shawn," Madam Tess broke the heavy silence in the living room, her voice cautious yet insistent. "You have barely touched your food since morning. This isn't good for you."Shawn Darlington slouched on the couch, his hair disheveled and shirt crumpled as if he had not changed into a new one in days. His unnervingly bright eyes stared at nothing in particular, his empty whiskey glass poised to slip from his dangling hand. The room was dark save the dim light of the television, its sound muted yet seemingly playing over and over the same headline that had haunted him since it broke: "Business Tycoon Shawn Darlington Gets Duped by the Wadsley Twins."His jaw clenched, and in a hoarse, low tone, he growled, "I'm not hungry, Madam Tess. Leave me be."But Madam Tess did not bat an eyelid. She clasped her hands tight in front of her apron, her face clouded in a thick mask of concern. "Sir, I understand you're upset, but shutting yourself up like this won't solve anything.”"Upset?" Shaw

The night was so still that the only sound heard were Eva's fleeing footsteps on cold, concrete pavement. Her heels clicked onto the sidewalk but weren't in perfect rhythm; her body was trembling. Her eyes blurred into tears, trying her best to keep in balance."I lost him; I lost everything. " she whispered into the silence of the night.By the time Eva finally arrived at her parents' mansion, she was tear-blotted, with messed-up hair and mascara streaked down both sides of her cheeks. She was still at the steps to the large house entrance when she faltered, almost flinching as shaking fingers made ringing on the chime echo like cold wind through a silent house. Finally, the huge door groaned to open, presenting her mom, Eleanor Wadsley, draped in silk."Eva? What are you doing here at this time?" Eleanor's voice shook in confusion and alarm. She looked her up and down, her mouth parted in alarm. "Good heavens, child, what happened?"She didn't say a thing but threw herself, sobbing,
