The Undiscovered Way
Only the odd creak of wood or the rustle of wind against the deteriorating structures could break the stillness of the destroyed marketplace. Zara couldn't get rid of the sense of urgency that was eating away at her, even if the atmosphere was heavy with the weight of the past. They had no time to relax. Not at all.
In actuality, she was unsure of her next course of action. She had intended to go to the Imperial archives, where the weapon was supposedly kept, but the ruins were much more perilous than this location. There seemed to be darkness around every step taken in that direction. However, they were propelled ahead by the allure of something hidden beneath the ashes—the promise of power.
From his place on the floor, Kael murmured in a raspy voice as he stirred behind her. "We must get out of here before it becomes dark. The risk increases with the length of time we are here.
Zara looked at him, trying to gauge his condition with narrowed eyes. His complexion continued to appear pale, and the incision on his side was leaking blood slowly and steadily, which alarmed her more than she wanted to acknowledge. There was fire in the man's eyes, though, and Zara could use it. Assuming he lived long enough.
She replied, a bit annoyed, "Do you really think I don't know that?" However, where should we go? Kael, we are at the end of our alternatives. There is a death trap in every way.
The ferocity of her remarks didn't make him wince; he kept his eyes fixed on her. "We must move to the city's north side. I am aware of a passageway that leads beneath the former Imperial complex. The majority of those who scavenged the ruins never discovered it since it is hidden.
Zara raised a doubtful eyebrow. "Hidden? And you think I'll trust you?
With a faint frown on his face, Kael nodded. "I'm not requesting your confidence. I would like you to accompany me.
Zara hesitated, the weight of her thoughts crushing down on her as her palm rested on the knife by her side. She was wise enough to avoid blind leads. However, she was unable to disregard the weight of Kael's words. She wondered whether the passage was the secret to unlocking whatever was hidden beneath the ashes of the Empire because of the way he described it.
Zara exhaled after a lengthy quiet. "All right. But I'll leave you here to rot if this turns out to be a trap, Kael.
Something resembling a half-smile flickered across his lips. "Comprehensive."
She walked towards the entrance, avoiding him, only stopping when her fingers touched the chilly metal of a partially collapsed frame. The odour of smoke and dust, the remains of a former world, was borne by the wind. Kael was attempting to repair this world. Zara was not interested in bringing that world back to life.
Zara's voice was firm as she said, "Let's go."
They returned to the ruins after leaving the marketplace's protection. Zara was vigilant, watching the horizon for any activity, even if the trail was still free of attackers. As they went, her boots kicked up dust, and the sound of stone crumbling in the distance filled the air.
The monuments to an Empire that had claimed dominance over all were now reduced to ruins, as they walked through the skeletal remains of what had once been a grand square. Despite the looming weight of history, Zara made herself concentrate. If they were to discover the secret route Kael mentioned, they had to act fast.
Zara's hand automatically moved to the little pack by her side as they got closer to the square's northern edge, inspecting the goods they had scrounged from the marketplace. Just enough water, a knife, and some dried meat scraps to last a few more days, but not much else.
Long shadows were spreading across the ruins as the sun started to set. Even though he was moving more slowly now and seemed to be exerting more effort with each stride, Kael was still walking by her side. Zara looked at him, her eyes darting from his wound to the road ahead. Time was not on their side.
Zara murmured softly, without glancing at him, "I don't think you're going to last very long, Kael." "A lot of blood is being lost by you."
He didn't respond right away, and Zara briefly believed he might not respond at all. Then his voice came, steady but quiet.
Zara didn't quite trust the quiet assurance with which he said, "I've been worse off." "I can continue. However, we must act quickly. The risk increases with the amount of time we wait.
Zara remained silent. Weakness could be fatal in this world, as she had long since learnt. Although Kael's fortitude was amazing, it wouldn't matter if he passed out before they got to safety. The thought of leaving him, however, made her feel something. There was still something about him that felt... genuine in spite of everything—the Empire, the treachery, his ancestry. And that was risky.
When they came to a little alleyway between two partially fallen buildings, Kael motioned for her to stop with his hand.
His voice was low as he said, "Here." "This wall is behind the passage."
Zara looked warily at the crumbling stone as her eyes darted over it. "A secret passageway in the centre of the ruin?" She gave a headshake. "You think I'll believe you?"
Kael shot back, "I don't care if you believe me." "It is present. I've experienced it previously.
Zara took a while to reply. With her hands following the rough edges of the wall, she took a step forward. Feeling for any change, any indication that the passage was genuine, she rubbed her palm against the chilly stone. She felt something give under her fingertips as a chilly blast of wind passed through the lane. The stone started to move with a faint click and then a gentle grinding noise.
Zara took a step back and saw a narrow, black tunnel emerge from a tiny hole in the wall. The air that came from inside was stale, like the grave of a lost world, and the path was just large enough for them to pass through.
"Well," Zara mumbled to herself, "I'll be damned."
Though it was more of a wince than anything approaching amusement, Kael smiled. "Told you."
Zara entered the pitch-black tunnel without saying another word, her senses keenly aware of every sound and movement. The air smelt faintly of mud and mildew, and the walls were scratchy against her skin. The path appeared to wind down, getting smaller as they went deeper into the ground.
"Is the Imperial compound located here?" Zara enquired, her voice resonating a little in the small room.
"Yes," Kael said in a tight tone. Somewhere under the palace's ruins. The secrets—everything the Empire wished to conceal—were stored there. Down there is the weapon.
Zara's fingers clenched around her knife's handle. She wasn't sure whether she could trust Kael, but she was certain that they had to get to the weapon first if it was real and had the potential to transform the world.
Zara stopped, her breath seizing in her throat as a sharp noise reverberated down the tunnel. She listened intently for anything that would reveal where they were. However, nothing was present. Only the whispering of the gentle, unsettling wind and the sound of their feet.
Kael took a step towards her, his shadow in the night. "We must move quickly. By now, they will be searching for us.
Zara nodded and began to move more quickly. As they descended deeper into the earth, the air thickened, and the temperature dropped. Zara felt a persistent unease, sensing they were being watched by someone or something.
However, she continued to press forward and go forward. Though Zara had experienced worse, the blackness ahead was all-consuming. Here, she was immune to the past.
And something awaited in the centre of the ruins. Something strong.
Memory's DepthsAs they sank more into the forgotten depths under the destroyed Empire, the darkness engulfed them. The sound grew louder in the little hallway as Zara's every foot reverberated against the chilly stone walls. The still air pressed down on her chest, making her breathe in quick, shallow gasps. The dim glow from the phosphorescent stone walls was the tunnel's only source of light, creating strange shadows that moved and flickered with every shift. With each step, the weight of his injury became more noticeable as Kael walked beside her at a slower pace. Zara sensed him at her side, his steady, if forced, breathing a continual reminder of their mutual danger. At first, she had believed he was unbeatable—someone who could guide her to safety, someone who could withstand the last of the Empire. However, the truth of their predicament was beginning to set in as they delved farther into the shadowy centr
The Coming of AgeZara felt a shock of fear run through her chest as the ground shook beneath her feet. She hardly had time to respond when the blazing crystal in Kael's hands blazed brighter, almost blinding her, and a deep, deafening rumble echoed through the vault's walls. Zara lifted her arm to protect her eyes from the quick flash of brightness, which was too much to handle."What's going on?" She yelled, but the loud noise drowned out her words. She could sense the floor beneath her trembling, as if the earth itself were objecting to their presence. The light appeared to pulse more quickly than ever before, and Kael's face was twisted in concentration as his hold on the crystal tightened. "I'm not sure, but we must relocate!"He dragged her to the closest wall, where she could hide in the shade of a big stone pillar. The walls of the vault creaked and cracked, as though the old building were struggling to s
The Coming of AgeThe buzz of old power filled the air, resonating through Zara's bones. She felt feelings of horror crawl up her spine as the crystal in her hand pulsed with ferocity. Something had reacted when she touched it.She hesitated for a second, her fingers still pressing the cool, smooth surface. The room seemed to be alive, as if it were breathing and awaiting the next action from someone or something. The entire enormous space was filled with the expanding light from the crystal. It created unsettling shadows on the walls, giving the mysterious symbols a dancing appearance as they changed in time with the energy. Zara's heart pounded. She had no idea what to anticipate, but this? She had never anticipated anything like this. She heard Kael stirring behind her. He was shifting, moaning, and putting his hand up to his head when she turned around. Her chest swelled with relief. They were running out of t
The Fury of the SentinelThe cavern echoed with the Sentinel's footsteps, each one laden with the weight of age-old might. The ground shook beneath Zara's feet, as though the earth itself were yielding to the creature's will, and she could feel it in her bones. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps, and her pulse thumped in her ears. Not much had ever scared her. She had, after all, fought against the perils of this broken planet, scavenged among ruins, and survived the fall of an empire. But the horror clutched at her, a deep, gnawing emotion that threatened to suffocate her, as she stood before the Sentinel, an old, living weapon. She was dragged back towards the cavern's shadows by Kael's firm grip on her arm. "Zara, get moving!" he yelled, his voice full of desperation. She didn't require two reminders. They fled into the cave's darkness, Kael at the forefront, avoiding the dazzling light that the Sentinel's presen
A Precarious FlightThe stifling darkness of the cavern they had fled was a sharp contrast to the pale light of the outside world. Zara's lungs stung from the crisp night air as she staggered out into the open and gasped. The feeble stars in the sky above were obscured by the ash cloud that pervaded the atmosphere.Kael was not far behind, helping her to balance herself while wearing a sombre expression. His voice was low yet forceful as he enquired, "Are you okay?"Zara nodded, but it felt like her body was about to give out. The crystal was still in her grasp, its warmth throbbing slightly. Despite the fact that her hands were shaking, she said, "I'm fine."Kael's jaw tensed as he looked back towards the cave entrance. "That thing is still alive, but we bought ourselves some time." It will pursue us.Zara answered in a hollow voice, "I know." The image of the Sentinel's eyes, flashing red with an unusual, alm
The Signal and the StormThe stifling silence of the forest was broken only by the slight rustle of trees covered in ash. Zara leaned heavily on Kael as they struggled forward, getting farther away from the scene of their most recent near-death experience with every step. Her mind roiled with a restless energy, even as her legs cried out for rest. With a raspy voice, she eventually questioned, "What was that?" With a faint glimmer that pulsed as though it were alive, she gazed at the crystal in her fingers.Kael kept his eyes on the road ahead and avoided looking at her. He said, "Zara, it wasn't just the stalker." "That brightness... Your actions back then were like to setting off a beacon."A lighthouse?" Zara said again, her heart pounding. "You mean others witnessed it?"Kael eventually turned to her and paused his stride. He had a sombre face. Not only other people. them.In Zara's chest, the weight of his words
Voices Amid the DebrisThe terrain had been raggedly scarred by the storm. Ash and rubble swirled in erratic patterns beyond the deteriorating walls of their shelter, serving as a sombre reminder of the world's unrelenting deterioration. When Zara awoke from a restless slumber, she saw Kael standing close to a ragged window, his gaze sweeping the bleak sky."Is there anything out there?" Her voice was still heavy with fatigue as she asked.Kael remained still. Although his tone implied that they were not secure, he stated, "Nothing we can see." But something is on the horizon. I sense it.Zara sat up, squirming as her back's rigid muscles objected. "Are you ever sick of being correct about negative things?"Kael gave a slight smirk as he looked over his shoulder. "Not really."The tension between them was evident despite the effort at humour. Zara's hand automatically reached for the crystal, which was now tucked in
The Warning of the KeeperClad in ragged, charcoal garments that appeared to blend into the surrounding darkness, the person stepped out of the shadows. Its face was hidden by a hood, and where eyes could have been, there was just a dim gleam of pale light. As it got closer, the temperature dropped, and Zara's palm shook around the crystal."Kael..." Zara's body was motionless as her voice faltered.Kael responded, "I see it," and moved ahead of her while brandishing his weapon. "Who are you?"A few yards distant, the figure came to a halt, its presence pressing down on them like an unseen weight with an odd, heavy intensity. Zara felt her spine tingle as it spoke in a chorus of dozens of overlapping tones. It said, "You have the shard." "The light that ought not to exist."Kael's posture strained, he gripped his blade tighter. "We wish to avoid trouble. We are merely transiting. As though thinking about what he had s
The Nexus’s ChoiceThe dense forest was suffocating, its twisting paths endless and its shadows alive with menace. Zara tightened her grip on her dagger, her resolve firm despite the uncertainty pressing down on her. The voice that had welcomed her to the Trial of the Lost echoed again, mocking her.“Zara, the protector who defies destiny. Do you truly believe you can escape what has been set in motion?”“I don’t just believe it,” Zara growled. “I’ll prove it.”Kael’s SacrificeKael stumbled through the jagged terrain, blood dripping from a gash on his arm. The creatures had stopped coming, but he could feel the presence of something far worse in the shadows. He kept moving, desperate to find Zara and Elias. As he rounded a corner, he saw a portal shimmering in the air. It pulsed with the same energy as the Nexus.“Finally,” Kael muttered, stepping toward it.But as he approached, a figure stepped out from the shadows—a man wearing armor that bore the mark of the Nexus. His face was h
Zara stood frozen in the vast, endless expanse. The ground beneath her feet shimmered like glass, reflecting a distorted version of herself. The air buzzed with an energy she couldn't identify, a low hum that sent shivers down her spine.“Kael? Elias?” she called out again, her voice echoing in the emptiness. No response came, only the haunting sound of her own voice bouncing back at her.A faint light flickered in the distance, pulsing like a heartbeat. Zara’s instincts urged her forward. Her steps echoed unnaturally, each one amplifying her solitude.“You don’t belong here.”The voice was soft, almost a whisper, yet it reverberated through the space with a force that made Zara’s chest tighten. She spun around, her eyes searching for the source.“Who’s there?” she demanded, her voice trembling. The air shimmered, and a figure materialized—a young girl with hair as white as snow and eyes that mirrored the Nexus’s silver glow. She couldn’t have been older than ten, yet her presence car
The blinding light from the Nexus filled the chamber, swallowing every shadow. Zara’s body trembled as the energy coursed through her, a storm she could barely contain. Her mind felt split—one side tethered to the room, the other pulled toward an endless void.“Zara!” Kael’s voice broke through the chaos. He stumbled forward, his hand outstretched.“I can’t—” Zara gasped. “It’s too strong!”The silver-eyed woman stood motionless, her expression serene. “The power is awakening. Don’t resist it. Let it guide you.”“Guide her into what?” Elias shouted, gripping his staff tightly. “Destruction? Death? Zara, fight it!”Zara’s eyes darted between them. Kael’s face was a mix of desperation and determination, while Elias’s was filled with fear. But it was the woman’s calm, steady gaze that unnerved her the most. The Nexus burned brighter, forcing everyone to shield their eyes. In the heart of the light, Zara saw images—visions of cities crumbling, rivers running black, and skies choked with a
The air in the chamber grew heavier as Zara stepped forward, the Nexus pulsing faintly in her hand. Its energy surged, responding to her trembling heartbeat. Kael and Elias flanked her, their expressions a mixture of resolve and fear.“Do you feel it?” Elias whispered, his voice barely audible. “It’s like it’s alive.”Zara nodded. “It’s waiting for something... or someone.”Suddenly, a low hum filled the room. The shadows on the walls rippled as though alive, coalescing into a form. A figure emerged from the darkness, cloaked in an aura that shimmered like oil on water. Their face was obscured, but their presence sent a chill down Zara’s spine.“So, you’ve come this far,” the figure said, their voice echoing unnaturally. “But do you even understand what you hold?”Kael stepped forward, his sword drawn. “Who are you? And what do you want with the Nexus?”The figure laughed softly, a sound that made the air vibrate. “You still don’t see? The Nexus isn’t just a tool—it’s a beacon. And yo
Zara moved toward the enormous doorway, her heart beating as though in time with the symbols' throbbing light. There was an odd force in the air surrounding them, and it felt heavy. Kael and Elias looked at each other, their tense partnership still shaky."Do you sense that?" Elias asked, his hand firmly clutching his sword's hilt."Yes," Kael whispered, looking about him. "As if the air were alive." Zara, what is this place?Zara paused, her hand lingering over the stone's engraved symbols. At last, she remarked, "It's... a key." "To everything." It is a test, though. We might not receive another chance if we do not succeed here.Kael grinned, but there was a hint of nervousness in his voice. "So, no pressure."Zara's fingers touched the symbols, making them blaze brighter. The air was filled with a low hum that became louder by the second. Then the doorway started to move with a thunderous roar. The PerspectiveThey had to protect their eyes from the dazzling brightness that streame
Zara's heart was racing with a mix of fear and excitement as she entered the portal. A huge, strange landscape replaced the blinding brightness that had surrounded her. It was a place poised between realms, where the ground pulsed slightly, as though alive, and the sky glistened in shades of violet and gold, unlike anything she had ever seen.A quiet yet authoritative voice came out, "Welcome, Zara."A figure in flowing robes that appeared to have been woven from starlight stood in front of her when she turned. Even though the figure's face was hidden, she felt both comforted and uneasy by its overwhelming presence.Despite her thoughts racing, she asked in a firm voice, "Who are you?"The figure answered, "I am the Keeper of the Gateway." "Your world's equilibrium will be determined by the decisions you make here, but you have shown that you are resilient."ConvergenceMeanwhile, Kael and Elias stood at the brink of the abyss they had just barely escaped. Now, the creature that had a
Zara opened her eyes to a startling silence. She laid on a glassy, smooth surface that held her weight like solid ground but appeared to shimmer like liquid. There was a never-ending sea of whirling fog all around her, its dim light creating lengthy shadows on an unknowable horizon."Elias?" she exclaimed, her voice wavering. As though mocking her anxiety, it reverberated incessantly. No response. Her heart was racing. The flash of light and Kael's irate face were the last things she could recall. She was alone now, trapped in a universe that was both harsh and ethereal.A Voice in the MistZara moved forward hesitantly, her every step causing ripples to appear on the glass. As if in response, the mist coiled itself like a live creature around her legs."Where am I?" To herself, she whispered.A deep, resonant voice responded. "You are a Nexus child standing in the In-Between."Her eyes darted through the fog as she whirled around. "Who is there? Present yourself!A figure shrouded in
The only sound in the room was the low buzz of the crystal, its power muted but still reverberating through the atmosphere. Elias and Zara stood together, their hands clenched together, their breathing erratic. There was an unbreakable tension even if they had won. With an expression of knowing, the scarred man looked at them. You have stepped over a line that few people dare to cross. But keep in mind that there are frequently hidden costs associated with having power. With a hushed voice, Zara nodded. "We are prepared for everything that comes up next."However, as she spoke, the chamber's walls shook a little, perhaps mocking her determination. A chilly wind blew past, bringing with it a low, ominous chuckle. The Ignored FigureKeeping his hand on his sword's hilt, Elias watched the shadows for any indications of danger as they left the chamber. He mumbled, referring to the disfigured man in the lead, "I do not trust him."Zara's brow furrowed. He has so far aided us. Why would he
There was a tangible vibrancy in the subterranean cavern. In time with Zara's pendant's brightness, the enormous crystal in its core pulsed. The spooky atmosphere was alive with echoes of the past as shadows moved across the old engravings on the walls. As Zara gazed at the crystal, her chest constricted. What does "sacrifice" mean to you? What is it requesting from us?The man's damaged face softened, but there was no consolation in his hollow eyes. Nothing is free, yet the Nexus has unfathomable power. It requires an offering—a piece of yourself that you might never get back—in order to divulge its secrets. With his blade still in his grasp, Elias took a step forward. "You can not really expect us to do this without further information. What is required? Our existence? "Our souls?"The slight smile that formed on the man's lips did little to reduce the strain. "Not your lives. Not your souls. But the most important thing to you. You are the only one who can identify that. The Cautio
