Yellow golden rays of the sun penetrated through the sheath of the alternating black and blue silk curtains, the melodies from birds outside and the fresh air hitting her nostrils woke up Elsie that morning. She slowly opened her eyes, lying on a king sized bed in the lonely fetus position with her elbows bracing her knee caps, under the white sheets with a net stand above it. Her husband was sound asleep behind her back. Between them a barrier of pillows.
She exhaled lazily. Twenty three years of age and she was already stressed out, visible by the wrinkles and acne on her beautiful face, swelling under her eyelids.
The Berlin wall of pillows was not always there. There was a time when the two slept cuddling each other. That was before he proposed and she agreed to move in with him. She sat up to have a good look at him. Lewis Woodley was looking handsome as usual, then there was that uncontrollable urge to touch him. Her hand moved but she froze not sure whether it was a good idea.
"Lewis" she called out politely.
"What's wrong with you? Let me sleep" he said rudely covering himself head to toe.
"You'll be late for work"
"Ooh, thanks" he said and continued sleeping.
She missed the days when they would wake up kissing the breath out of each other. The early morning sex, breakfast in bed and surprise dates. The road trips, watching the sunset together on Westbrook hills. All of it was nothing without him. She loved him so very much and he knew it that's why he was using it against her.
"When did you come back last night?"
"It's none of your business, don't patronize me am twenty five not a kid anymore"
"This can't keep going on Lewis am your wife" she complained her eyes getting watery, "what have I done to you?"
"Maybe your constant nagging behavior, if you're not happy with this just say it instead of looking for petty excuses" he said leaving the bed for the bathroom.
"Look at me Lewis, we haven't had sex in months!"
"Chose one, you want to know when I came in or you want sex?" He shouted from the bathroom.
Elsie didn't answer that one. While on her way to the bathroom his phone buzzed. She stopped to look at it and dropped it on the bed tears flowing in her eyes. That text was the trigger that opened the flood gates.
"So you were at her place" she said confronting him in the bathroom.
"I have no idea what you're talking about, get out of my way!" Lewis ordered, bare chest with a pair of blue cotton shorts.
"Am talking about your best friend thanking you for last night"
"I warned you against poking your nose into my business" he said angrily going past her.
"This is not fair Lewis. Why? Why!"
She followed him back in the bedroom. He was already dressing up acting as though he couldn't hear her. Lewis could see her crying in the mirror as he adjusted his tie. Brown skin, with black lustrous hair though unkempt she still looked beautiful, milky eyes with a greyish pupil, thin nose bridge between them, fresh heart shaped lips. Firm breasts on her chest, slim but curvaceous figure. He exhaled sharply and turned around looking remorseful. Her tears melted his heart. They always did.
"Hey..."
"Don't touch me!" She hissed pushing him away slapping his chest and screaming like a mad woman.
"Am sorry let me explain" Lewis tried to calm her down.
"Why are you doing this?"
He managed to overpower her by grabbing both her hands forcing her back on the wall. Both of them were breathing heavily, looking into each other's eyes. Lewis lost the staring contest out of guilt.
"You know she is kidding right?"
"Don't try to lie in my face"
"Read the whole thread!" He showed her his phone to show how innocent he was.
After reading the entire thread she gave back his phone with a look of contentment on her face although she was still sad.
"I'll make it up to you tonight let's go party or something"
"We need to talk about this"
"After we loosen up a little I know I haven't lived up to your expectations it's time I changed"
"Promise?"
"I promise baby I'll be late for work, bye" he said grabbing his bag from the desk in their room, he came back and kissed her on the lips before he dashed out.
That was not the first time he was promising a fresh start. But she was always clinging to the hope that whenever he did promise he meant it. Elsie made their bed humming an indistinctive tune of sadness. She picked up his clothes, checked through the pockets for any lose change. Instead she came across one of his credit cards and a receipt.
"Son of a bitch!" She cursed reading through the receipt.
As per the receipt, the previous day he had made a stop at a gift shop, florist and the most exquisite fashion shop in Westbrook, and she wanted to know where the gifts were because she couldn't remember the last time he got her any gifts. That interrogation had to wait until evening. She put the receipt on the desk then carried his clothes to the laundry basket in the bathroom. It was also her sanctuary. Elsie undressed and switched on the cold shower.
The cold water making contact with her skin made her shake. Her teeth rattled and goosebumps sprouted all over her body as the water cascaded down her body to her feet. She took some soap and applied on her hair washing it clean, down to her body. She then stood there with her eyes shut to enjoy the kind of peace the cold shower brought. A rough knock on the door cut off the fun.
"Who is it?" She asked switching off the shower.
"Breakfast is ready mum” a female voice said from behind the door.
"I'm coming" she said.
She was starting to get used to the billionaire life style of being served, everything done for her. All she did was eat shop and help around with the family business when called upon. Before she had it all she thought that was the best life one could ask for now that she had it at the expense of true love, she hated it all. They say be careful what you wish for.

Lewis Woodley, the last born and smartest of the three Woodley brothers was seated in the back seat of his famous golden Rolls Royce flipping through the pages of the Westbrook city daily newspaper. He was the CEO of Woodley and sons’ insurance company, one of the few billion dollar ventures in a fleet of companies and businesses owned by the billionaire family. They owned more than half of that city.
"Sir we are almost there, do you want to make any stop?"
"No am good. There is something I have been longing to talk to you about" Lewis said busy on the paper.
"Okay" the driver said stealing glances at his boss via the rear view mirror.
He went to a scary silence that gave the driver cold feet.
"My wife, Fiancée actually has she talked to you about anything?" He asked keeping the paper away.
"No sir we don't talk much"
"I don't want you to talk to her or your job is in jeopardy"
"Okay sir"
"No word about where we go, you hear me?"
"Yes sir" he said driving them to the company offices.
The black gate opened to the spectacular four storey edifice, its pillars painted cream and black, made of glass that reflected the rays of the sun back to the atmosphere creating some sort of optical illusion in the air that was a beauty for the eyes. A perimeter wall was surrounding it. On their left was the staff parking lot. Brass plates mounted on every section. The driver opened the door for Lewis before he parked the fuel guzzler in its rightful area. Under the black and gold brass plate encrypted "CEO"
"Get me the bag" he shouted as he walked to the office.
You could notice the employee’s behavior and change at the sight of him in the reception area. Turkish grey suit, no tie. Cotton white as snow shirt, black brogue leather shoes on his feet. He cleared his throat to ask for attention. Being a Friday, it was parade.
"Thank you all for coming, on behalf of the Woodley’s I appreciate your efforts they make this place what it is. Clap for yourselves!"
They gave themselves a huge round of applause.
"The purpose of this meeting has not changed" he said looking around, "Motivation, we can do better, let's try our best today to end the week at a good place on the financial chart so that next week we have somewhere to start. We can do it" He psyched them up, "Any questions?"
Dozens of eyes roamed the entire block full of professionally dressed ladies and gentlemen hoping to see a hand shot up in the air.
"Come on guys, nothing? No one? Okay, ask me anything, you from the accidents department" he said pointing to a nicely dressed lady in a purple velvet sheath dress, "not the one behind you, I've said this again and again confidence is key in our line of work. Feel free to ask any questions you have so that we can solve them together. I know the likes of the Gilbert there with his poor handwritings would really love to use the suggestion box"
He cracked them up relieving the tension in the room.
"I have a question sir" Gilbert said squeezing himself from the back.
"Personal or work related?"
"Work related sir" Lewis gave him a signal to go on, "it's actually a suggestion I was asking on behalf of everyone the vacancy in the mortgage department should be filled by one of our own sir. There are competent, qualified and loyal employees who have worked for the Woodley’s for more than a decade now..."
"You mean like you?" Lewis said smiling broadly, the other employees laughed at Gilbert trying to blow his own trumpet.
"Yes like me" he said laughing, "It can be anyone"
"Okay I'll talk to dad about it over the weekend, let's get back to work!"
As they went back to their different work stations Lewis marched to the lift. By his side his secretary was trying to brief him and at the same time run with her stilettos and a black tight dress slightly above her knee caps with a slit at the back. She was not alone, the driver was also behind them trying to catch up.
"In the afternoon you also have a meeting with the board to discuss the financial report" she said pressing a button on the lift, the door closed immediately the driver entered with the bag.
"Okay and then"
"You have golf with your golf club at three, a meeting with your dad and brothers at four
..."
"Okay anything else?" He asked busy typing on his phone.
"Your wife called to remind you about the dinner plans I wanted your permission to book a reservation"
"Scratch that I have other plans" he said leaving the lift to his office.
It was directly opposite the lift. A three minute walk but with his striding they were there in a record time of one minute.
"Keep it there thank you" he said to the driver, "remember what we discussed"
"Okay sir" he said leaving Lewis with his secretary.
"Come on you know the drill" he said with sinister smile on his face.
She locked the door and got rid of her top on her way back. Lewis was leaning on his big desk smiling. He liked what he was seeing.
Lewis was once a one-stop man for Elsie. When their love was novel he made her feel like she could get everything she wanted in a man in him. He had all those qualities that turned her on besides money and his remarkable prowess under the sheets he was funny, smart, considerate and caring and above all loving- he reminded her how much she meant to him every chance he got and complemented her hair, dress code, cooking among other small things that melted her heart and she reciprocated the same by trying to be the best a one-stop woman for him. Nothing but the best. With the sudden change he was none of those things she wanted and fell in love with. Lewis was like a politician who made a lot promises during campaign and ended up fulfilling none once he got in office instead he put up a few white elephant projects. Unlike the politician though, he had rounded off everything to money and what it can do. She complained about boredom he got her a personal assistant. For what? He was throwin
After lunch at the five star, world renown Westbrook resort the girls would later go on to a shopping spree in town. Again, not Elsie's intention but you'll be a fool to underestimate Bella's persuasion skills. She knew how to get anything from her best friend. It was six in the evening when the girls went to their different directions. The driver dropped Elsie to club Scorpion where she was waiting on Lewis for their date before he was instructed to drop off Bella at her place.Fun fact or rather an annoying one, Elsie did not get a chance to talk to her best friend about her boring sex life with Lewis. So, what are some friends for?Elsie was officially back to being lonely. It's said, a problem shared is half solved. She had no one to tell her problems. Maybe her mother who always had the same answer..."I have told you more than a dozen times my daughter. Marriage is about sacrifices, you went into that relationship with a fifty percent deficit...""And am supposed to offer fifty
Lewis Woodley. He woke up furious. He was feeling what Elsie was used to feeling every morning she woke up all alone on a six by six bed, lonely, sad, angry and regretting. In Swahili they say: mkuki Kwa nguruwe mtamu Kwa na binadamu mchungu. Do unto others what you'd want them to do unto you. Whoever said that should have made a billboard out of it_ spearing a pig for sport is so fun until the same spear pierces the human, it's very painful. There is always no fun in getting others do what we do to them, especially when it’s mean.Even after he stood her up the previous night Lewis expected her to come home and act as if nothing happened. He did not want to touch her and he also did not anyone else to. Kind of confusing but that’s how he saw it. Call him what you want but Lewis felt like there was nothing wrong with that."Good morning everyone!" He said walking downstairs in a pair of grey cotton shorts and a matching grey T-shirt with the words, "Wife can be from the village but car
Elsie and her driver did not exchange a word with each other. But when they got to the busy CBD of Westbrook city they eventually had to talk yet the two were scared of each other. Elsie was scared the driver had definitely already set her up. She had not called Lewis or his brothers back and she was ignoring their calls. As for the driver, whether he continued to work for the Woodley’s or not it all depended on Elsie. How she was going to get herself out of that mess."Mum...""Take to me to Bella's, has anyone called you?" Elsie asked confidently, behind the confidence was a scared little girl at the driver's feet begging for mercy. How was she going to face her mother if their marriage failed because of her? Where she came from it was always a man’s fault. "No, they can't call because I switched my phone off"She took a sigh of relief. One thing remained. Making sure he kept quiet. But how? It was hard if not impossible to keep him shut. Blackmail was a situation she never wanted t
elsie was caught off guard. she was not expecting lewis to show up flunked by joe due to his stubbornness. the fact that he agreed to be patronized by joe meant he really wanted her back. which made her teeny tiny guilt worse than it was. for close to a minute or two joe had said nothing to her. he was looking through the window and the silence was having a toll on elsie. she respected him, everyone in the family did, apart from lewis of course but joe was among the few individuals she could talk to openly. they clicked the moment she moved in. "it's a beautiful neighborhood isn't it?" he asked turning around to face elsie. she was fidgeting with curiosity."yeah, it's good""you know why am here elsie please, make it easier for me" that was his opening line, joe would have been a successful politician if he ever ran for office, "my brother is a hard nut to crack, he is inconsiderate, doesn't trust anyone, thinks he is better than everyone and an egomaniac but behind al
It was the longest she had even taken walking from the east wing of the Woodley mansion to the north which was where George's office and bedroom were. The other three wings were divided among the sons with a common dining and living rooms at the center. The aerial view of the mansion looked like some sort of a cross. Each wing had a minimum of five bedrooms, one master with its own bathroom and a walk in wardrobe, a kitchen and a living room of its own. The other thing they shared was the gym room, library and music room. She stood in silence behind that well varnished mahogany door for a minute, took a deep breath and went for the Knock but she couldn't. Elsie retracted her hand. She had only heard the stories about how bad a summon from George could be and she was moments away from having her first experience of it. "Ready when you are Elsie!" George said.A blood curdling shock hit through her entire body. She had no idea he could see him from inside. "You can
that saturday evening, their room was smelling strawberries when she got in from their little chinwag with the girls. ruby red and white rose petals on the marbled floor and the bed on which there was a red velvet dress, candles lighting up the entire room. lewis was a once in a blue moon hopeless romantic but when he chose to he surprised her and came up with something way better than the previous one. a note was attached to the dress with instructions. she picked it up and skimmed through it a warm smile escaped her lips as she started to undress."okay, where are the shoes?" she asked looking around, "they must be somewhere"there was another note stuck on their large rectangular dressing mirror mounted on her side of the bed that was in the middle of the room. she read through it and tip toed to the walk in wardrobe as though she was walking on eggshells. at the far end was the show rack. it was not hard to spot a shiny golden pair of hills among her pairs.
For the first time in three months Elsie woke up next to Lewis, feeling his body heat. There was no barricade of pillows. They were covered in their white sheets naked with Elsie lying on his hairy chest, feeling the rhythmic raise and fall of his thoracic cavity. Cool air escaped his lungs through his nose. She slid out of his grasp carefully not to wake him up and sat on the bed her hands covering her face.It was a brand new day but with the same guilt. Some things don’t just change especially those engrained on our hearts by a curving knife of guilt. The memories of the sweaty untamed sex they had the previous night flashed her mind but they were getting distorted by those of the other night with Frank. She tried to slap some sense into her own head but she ended up waking up Lewis. Another bad move. She was afraid of the review-how she performed the previous night."Good morning sunshine, you're okay?""You're awake!" Surprised Elsie turned around to face Lewis
That day even the students could tell their instructor was having the best if not one of the best days of his life. The training was fun, no yelling and those deep personal speeches he used in them to remind them of why God gave them the gift of dancing and how they needed to use it to the maximum, his moves were flowless and perhaps he didn't realize this but they only practiced on love songs. It was evident the great Frank Tazz had his heart stolen by a sexy damsel because they knew he couldn't have settled for less. And all that begged one question, who one earth was she? They were however not in a hurry to know because he was going to tell them. Human beings are social creatures and most of the time we can't resist the urge to share the good things that are happening to us...that's why social media is full of happy pictures of people on vacations and trips abroad and rarely those that depict suffering or lack of enough."Am leaving early today. You guys put into practice everythin
Despite the unending stress of life brought solely by the man she referred to as her husband Elsie didn't hesitate to do her job well to the required standards. As a result of her competence George already had the loopholes that were leaking his cash in the companies and although she was just doing her job she felt a bit sad for the employees who got fired and those who were suspended as further investigations were underway. "You know embezzling funds from the company is not a very good thing, relax" Lisa was there to help her get through the guilt, "if anything you're doing the rest of us a favor, the money that is embezzled should have been used to increase our salaries""What if this is their only job?""They should have known that before engaging in that selfish act" she seemed remorseless and I gave Elsie that breather she much needed."You're right"To help her further Lisa changed the topic of discussion, too bad she changed it to a more uncomfortable one."So how did that 007
The Woodley’s were ready for work after a healthy delicious breakfast. All of them except Lewis who was both horny and angry having yet spent another night “all on his own” tossing on his massive bed. Being a lady’s man, he had vowed to never wank again...yeah again because he had wanked most of his life while trying to avoid women and focus on his goals especially in college where he was broke. But then he had money and could sleep with anyone he wanted. To him the society was to blame, the same society that had busy taught girls that a man was worthless without money wanted them to remain loyal after they finally managed to have a few coins to their name. Anyway, he could also not order for a hooker, one because it was going to be disrespectful to his dignity and that of the family and also, he couldn't tell who wanted to harm him or those that claimed to be related to him and two, now this one he should have seen it coming. He couldn't leave the compound late at night, his father'
Cub scorpion was not as fun as he expected it to be. After gobbling a couple of beers and having a cheap meaningless banter with his friend jimmy Frank asked Wade to leave. Him on the other hand was having fun despite the boring emotionless modern music blaring the speakers but since Frank was his boss wade had no option but to cut short his fun and drive them home. The city was lighting up in different neon and argon lights making it look shiny like a distant galaxy. Hundreds of cars hooting and going in different directions. Frank had his mind roaming far and wide but one particular thing was eating him up. How to tell Elsie that he wanted her for himself with no apologies. Like just walk up straight to her and let his lips and the warmth of his mouth do the talking. Then after the kiss hold her hand and let his heart melt as the words leave his mouth. Wade was thinking perhaps he wasn’t feeling okay or that conversation with his dad didn't go so well. Either way it was within his
Tension could be felt in the room, Tom was frozen his hand behind his back, he had changed to his home clothes. A pair of khaki shorts and grey polo T-Shirt. He had no idea what was going on although he could tell that Lewis didn't look so happy. For a number of reasons really but one loud one was his presence there. Yet he was no stranger to Lewis, he knew how to handle him at all times."Should I come some other time?" Tom finally found the long-awaited coordination between his brain and his tongue. "What's going on here?" Lewis asked the most awkward but much expected question, neither Elsie nor Tom was surprised that he did ask that. And yeah, they knew what he was insinuating by such. His allegation would have held some water were it not for the fact that he was seeing her best friend."Nothing, don't make a big deal out of this. Tom is here to see me""See you? And you have the nerve to say he is here to see you and I'm the one who's supposed to leave!" His voice was high pitch
All the Woodley’s except Lewis were enjoying a glass of milk in the parlor. It was a quarter to seven a bit late but you couldn't blame any of them who didn’t have a driver like Tom that knew how to beat the busy traffic. Surprisingly even George himself came in late, they found Elsie at home already helping the kids with homework, something none of them could do. It was one big happy family, and as the banter got more interesting, Joe stole Elsie away from the crowd. It had been long since the two of them had a chat, now that she knew him well she wasn't scared of facing him. But he was afraid of what she could bring on the table despite her calmness."What do you want Joe?""I come in peace" he said rising his arms in the air, a cool smile across his face that was not fooling her. She was well aware how quick he would have made it disappear. "What a joke? Last I checked you, me and peace can't co-exist""It's time to loosen up a little bit because we have a problem"It all sounded
The blackmailer watched on as the leaking with confidence Elsie laughed to her last teeth. She went to her pocket and retrieved a beautiful white flowery handkerchief. "Sorry" she said wiping tears of joy from her face, joy because she was like a student who got to see the test before sitting for it. Everything was going on as Tom said it would, “I have no idea what you're talking about here. If you want some money work hard for it or you can beg""I didn't come here to be insulted. You forget you're here alone" he said going to his pocket, showed her a knife and she also remembered he mentioned something about them being a team. "Ooh, yeah that's right. I'm sorry but we are both wasting each other's time here. You're accusing me of something I didn't do""Don't act smart with me. You know what? Just got an idea""I hope it helps both of us stop wasting time" "No, you know the price tag had just gone up. Now I'll be asking for half a milli. You can afford it by selling jewelry alon
That evening after work Elsie quickly went to check on George, she wanted permission to go run an errand, but we both know she wanted to go for that meeting with the blackmailer, sounds awkward and stupid but after thinking deliberately about the whole thing she decided to rise to the occasion and face her own demons, nothing was going to happen if she just sat there and expected her problems to disappear. She was going to take the bull by the horns and snatch her peace back. "Don't stay out late, you heard the conversation at the table" George said without making eye contact, it seemed as though he was going to be there for quite some time. To some extent she pitied and wanted to help, but you can't pour from an empty cup. The only way she could help him was if she didn't have problems of her own."Sure, I might be able to help tomorrow""You worry too much about me kiddo" he raised his gaze, "Too much to an extent my own son thinks you're trying to replace him""He was just angry,
It was another fine Monday morning at the Woodley manor. Everyone was awake and active the children were preparing for school and the adults for work. Despite the small altercation with Lewis the Weekend had been great and it was not going to affect the vigor with which they were going to approach their various duties. Feeling left out was Lewis because whilst everyone was busy getting ready for work he was still in his pajamas looking on, he also felt jealous but again he had no one to blame except himself...not exactly what he thought. He blamed all of them. Anyway, on his way out to swim and sunbath the whole day, sleep was also on his schedule, he found Joe trying to help Andy get it together. Hilarious to him."You got this babe, this is just like any other office you've held. I can go with you if you like""No, I'll be good. They'll think am hiding behind you""Then tell me how I can help""You already believe in me, right? That's all I needed to hear""Go
