Elena's point of view

My stomach churns and protests beneath a threadbare, oversized men’s shirt. Dust and grime cling to the fabric, a mix of my own and remnants from its former owner. The initial stench has dulled over time, overtaken by the metallic tang of damp air and a peculiar, persistent scent I can’t place. The barred window in my cell is my only clue about time. It hasn’t shown daylight since my arrest, though it feels like I’ve been here for days.

I try to convince myself the mysterious scent means nothing. I can’t bear the thought of another failed bond.

The rogue man shackled beside me rattles his chains. The guards cuffed him to the wall, but for some reason, they left me untethered. “You’d better brace yourself,” he mutters, always eager to talk. “I’m done for because I injured one of them. But even for trespassing, there’s punishment. Any other Alpha might let you off with a warning, but not VuK. Coming here was a big mistake.”

“It wasn’t intentional,” I reply, tracing idle shapes in the dirt with my fingertip. “I’ve already said it was an accident.”

“Doesn’t matter,” he says, shaking his head. “VuK’s the ruthless type, one of the last left like that. He guards his reputation fiercely, and it works. Look at us—the only fools locked up here. The others? Gone.”

I glance at him. “Probably because he already dealt with them.”

The rogue’s eyes widen slightly as he nods, almost frantic. “Exactly. Should’ve known better. But don’t think he’ll care whether your trespass was an accident or not. There’s no point in begging.”

“What do you think he’ll do to me?” I ask hesitantly. “It can’t be as bad as what’s coming for you, right?”

“The Alpha can do whatever he wants,” the rogue replies grimly. “But no, your punishment won’t be as severe. He might keep you here until your family pays for your release or make you work for your freedom.”

“Work how?”

“Labor, most likely,” he says, giving me a once-over. “Though you don’t look built for that kind of work.”

I sigh. “That’s fine. I’d rather work for my freedom than have my family know I’m here.”

The rogue’s chains clink against the stone floor. “Your family doesn’t care?”

“I left,” I admit, curling up against the cold wall. “I don’t plan on going back anytime soon, especially if my mate is here—if he even exists. I don’t know.”

“Why did you run? Did they hurt you?”

I shake my head. “No. I just needed to get away, to be somewhere else for once.”

The rogue’s voice softens. “Whatever your punishment is, accept it. Don’t challenge VuK. Don’t even look him in the eyes. If you’re lucky, maybe your mate is one of his men. That might be the only thing that saves you.”

I rest my head against the wall, drawing my knees to my chest. The rogue falls silent, likely consumed by his own grim thoughts, leaving me to mine. I wonder if anyone back home has noticed I’m gone. Have they even looked past Serena and her celebrated mate? A part of me wishes my parents missed me, but now that Serena has fulfilled my duties, I’ve become irrelevant.

The quiet stretches on until the sharp screech of a door opening down the hall makes me jump. The rogue stirs, crawling as close to the bars as his chains allow to get a glimpse of who’s approaching. A guard appears and unlocks our cell.

“The Alpha is coming,” the guard announces, stepping inside to unshackle the rogue from the wall.

My heart races as the rogue is hauled to his feet and led out of the cell. The guard shuts the door behind him.

“What about me?” I call out. “I told you—I think I’ve scented my mate. Why hasn’t anyone—”

The guard barely spares me a glance. “Enough of that. If you really sensed your mate, where is he? Huh? Lying won’t help you.”

“I’m not lying,” I insist. “I just don’t know where he is.”

The guard ignores me, locking the door and disappearing down the hall with the rogue. Left alone, I wrap my arms around my legs and rest my forehead on my knees. The faint glow of dawn creeps through the barred window, casting a dim light over the cell. And so, I wait.

I wait alone, anticipating the guard’s arrival to take me to Alpha VuK and deliver my punishment. But before fear can fully consume me, a sharp ache blooms in my chest, stealing my focus. Pressing the heel of my palm against it, I try to ease the sensation, but it grows into something undeniable. It’s not pain—it’s a warm, exhilarating pressure, as though the very air in my lungs is condensing into something divine.

The Goddess is binding me to my mate.

I release my knees and scramble to my feet, gripping the filthy bars of my cell. “Hello?” I call into the hallway, my voice echoing off the damp stone walls.

“Hello!” I shout again, frustration building as no one answers. My heart pounds, and the moment’s significance overwhelms me. Slamming my hand against the bars, I growl in desperation. “Goddess’ sake, someone listen!”

The screech of a door opening down the hall reignites my hope. Clinging to the bars, I shout again, “Please! You have to listen! My mate is here, and he won’t find me if I’m—”

The words die in my throat as a potent scent floods my senses. A man steps into view, his silhouette commanding the narrow hallway. My voice falters entirely as his presence consumes me. As he approaches the bars, the dim light reveals his features—strong, rugged, and impossibly handsome. He’s bigger than any of the guards I’ve seen, exuding an aura of raw power. My frantic pleas vanish as I take him in, every inch of him captivating me as much as I seem to captivate him.

“Will you listen to me? Please?” My voice cracks, desperate but quieter now.

“Go on,” he says, his voice smooth and enthralling.

“If you’re taking me to Alpha VuK, you should know I trespassed by accident. I was alone. But now… I think the Goddess is mating me.” My words spill out hurriedly. “Maybe you could talk to him, explain, and help me. He’s going to make me—”

“Make you do what?” he interrupts, his voice laced with amusement.

The scent intensifies, fogging my thoughts and sharpening my awareness of him. My instincts scream, It’s him. Is this towering figure my mate? If he is, why isn’t he helping me? Instead, he seems almost entertained by my plight.

“There’s no need to reason with him,” the man says casually.

“Why not?” I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.

He leans closer, his gaze unwavering. “Because I’m the Alpha.”

My breath catches, and my hands slip from the bars. All at once, the truth slams into me. My mate—the man whose presence sets my soul alight—is none other than Alpha VuK.

As I stand frozen, he unlocks the cell. The sound of the bolt sliding echoes like thunder in the quiet hall. He swings the barred door open, stepping inside with an authority that makes my pulse race. The mate bond surges through me, an electric current rewiring every nerve in my body.

Instinctively, I step back, my feet moving without conscious thought. He’s taller than I imagined, his broad shoulders and chiseled features cutting a striking figure. His presence overwhelms me—Alpha VuK, my mate. My heart clenches, and my fingers itch to reach out and touch him, to feel the solid strength of his arms and the warmth of his skin. But I clench my fists, holding myself back.

The bond fills my chest, a rush of emotions and sensations I can’t contain, yet my lungs burn as if I’ve forgotten how to breathe. I’m his, and he is mine. And now, everything has changed.

Elena's point of view. The tall man, with a hand towel in his grip, answers me, "Sometimes the Alpha’s sister comes to stay, but she’s mated and living with another pack, so it doesn’t happen often. They don’t live here, but his men—the Beta and others—are usually around."I nod, resuming my meal, not wanting to overwhelm them with questions, though I feel more comfortable asking them than Vanda. When I’ve finished and my plate is empty, one last question crosses my mind, and I take the risk to ask.“Are there any rules I should know about?”“Rules? Yes,” the tall man replies. “Lots of pack rules—probably more than you’re used to.”“I mean, are there house rules? Like where I’m allowed to go or what I can do?” I clarify.“Oh, well, it’s not really our place to tell the Alpha’s mate what she should or shouldn’t do.”This answer doesn’t bring much clarity. Despite the bond, I don’t feel like his mate. I feel more like a prisoner he’s been forced to accommodate, although he’s shared deta

Elena's point of view.Doubting the Moon Goddess feels wrong, but as I head to the packhouse, I can’t help questioning her purpose in pairing me with Vanda. The rogue I was imprisoned with wasn’t lying; the Alpha doesn’t give lenient punishments, and my hesitations about our bond feel justified. Yet, the pull in my chest doesn’t waver. Deep within me—mind, body, and soul—his claim is carved, drawing my admiration despite everything. The front door is unlocked when I return, so I step inside and quietly close it behind me. Slipping off my shoes, I head upstairs. My eyes are drawn to the master’s double doors, and I instinctively veer toward them. I pause, listening for Elizabeth in the kitchen. She’s likely drinking tea; there’s no sound of anyone working.Serena was right when she said we’re not allowed beyond the border for a reason. Elena's point of view.Would Serena or Mom think I’m crazy for staying this long and investing in this matehood? It feels indulgent, and part of me wonders if too much of Vanda’s coldness will end up hurting me. But could I leave if I wanted to? Honestly, I’m not sure. Even after the failed dinner conversation, leaving and going home wouldn’t put me in a better place. There’s no point in returning to my parents without a mate, let alone with the chance of becoming a Luna lost. Mom would be devastated, praying to the Goddess that I find my way back to the stars. So, for now, I stay and hope Vanda’s heart will eventually warm to the bond we share—really feel it the way mates are meant to.I don’t leave the spare room until late in the morning, but when I do, I catch Vanda’s scent in the air. Heading down the stairs, I spot him moving down the hallway toward the front door. He glances back when he sees me. Coerced by our bond, I ask, “Where are you going?”“Out to the fields,” he replies

My face scrunches involuntarily. The pack house isn’t far now, and once I get there, I can deal with these growing sensations in privacy.“Elena.”Hearing my name, I glance back to see Vanda approaching, his steps light and unbothered.“Did Charles tell you it’s just a headache?” I say, trying to sound firm. “If I lie down, it’ll go away.”He stops beside me, forcing me to halt, even as the heat in my body reminds me it won’t wait for anything.“What’s wrong?” he asks, his voice laced with concern.“Just a headache,” I insist.“Your scent has changed.”“Are you sure? Elena's point of view. The next morning, I receive a message from Alexa about our plans for the day. Vanda informs me that he’ll be spending time with Alpha Gold until it’s time to go to the beach, so Serena and I head to the pack house for an early lunch with Alexa, Corinne, and the former Luna, Olivia Gold, on a stone patio in the garden. The patio is shaded by tall trees and decorated with beautifully arranged flower beds. When we arrive, the pack house workers are already setting out platters of finger sandwiches, cookies, and neatly cut fruit for us.Alpha Gold’s mother carries the same elegance as Corinne but is more reserved and introverted. She greets us politely, introducing herself as Olivia Gold. When Alexa joins us after overseeing the food preparations, Olivia quickly asks how she’s feeling in the early stages of her pregnancy.Corinne then turns to Serena. “Are you mated, dear?”I watch my sister, wondering how she will respond.“I was twice.”“Twice?” Corinne echoes, cl

Elena's point of view.I press a hand to my chest, nervous that I might do something wrong.Vanda unbuttons his pants, pushing them down, making his arousal even more evident. My heartbeat quickens as anticipation fills me. Lying back against the bed, I raise my hips to remove my underwear, but Vanda takes over, sliding the delicate fabric over my knees, down my legs, and off my feet."You're quite eager," he murmurs, pulling me toward the edge of the mattress. He parts my legs and presses against me, the last barrier between us being his underwear. As the realization of the moment washes over me, a strange calmness settles within me."I keep having this dream—a recurring one—where we're like this, but you're about to..." I hesitate, searching for the right words. Elizabeth had used a more clinical term, but it felt too formal. Elena's point of view.Alpha Gold grins, likely already aware of his mate’s condition, but Corinne gasps in surprise. "You’re pregnant?" she asks, the shock still evident on her face. "For how long?""The wise woman believes I’m about three weeks along, so I must have already been pregnant when I visited Vanda and Elena without realizing it. She mentioned that my scent hasn’t changed as much as expected, but there’s nothing to worry about."I glance at Alexa’s empty spot where a wine glass should be, recalling how much she drank while visiting us. Then, I focus on my own drink. Maybe when Vanda and I start trying for a child, I should avoid alcohol altogether."Wonderful, absolutely wonderful. I thought you refused to taste my special bottle out of spite, but no, my dear little Alexandra is expecting a child," Corinne exclaims, her voice rising with excitement."Bryan and I are thrilled, and his mother is, too," Alexa says, squeezing her mate’s hand affectionately."The previous Luna

And does your mate feel respected? I know how you can be, Vanda. You can't just go silent on her—she's going to need constant communication and reassurance. All this war business must be taking a toll on her, you know. You may be the one fighting out there, but it's not easy being home, worrying—believe me. She needs to feel safe."I press myself against the hallway wall, trying to be as still as possible. I can feel every small movement—the twitch of a finger, the ache in my back, my heels hovering just slightly off the floor."She is safe," Vanda says."No, I know she may be safe, but does she feel safe?"I swallow hard. We only have a few hours before dinner, and it’s going to take me longer with one hand.”“I’m more than willing to help,” Vanda says, setting our bags on the floor of the master bedroom.“You know how to style women’s hair?” I tease.“I think I’d be more useful with the showering and dressing part.”I stifle a laugh and dig through my bag. “I think you’d be more of an obstacle.”Vanda steps closer, sliding a hand around my waist, his fingers lightly grazing the top of my backside. “I think you’re right. Elena's point of view.I can’t help but wonder if Serena’s struggle is at least partially due to the distance between her and Ben, not just because of Mark’s death. Charles arrived sometime during our clean-up—I can hear his and Vanda’s voices like a soft hum through the walls.I yawn against the back of my hand and trek upstairs to change clothes.I think Vanda’s plan to visit the Kane pack is a great idea—especially since a war with Alpha Walter means sticking to Alpha VuK’s land—but I wonder if she’s forgotten about my heat issue.
