My eyes scanned the room. Magnus had stopped crying the moment the voice echoed against the walls and now, my son was looking up at me with nothing but concern in his eyes.

“Mommy?” The one word that passed his lips was more than enough for me to understand what he was asking.

On instinct, my hand shot to the back of his head as I tried to pull it closer to my chest, as if that could help me protect my boy. “It’s okay, baby. Just close your eyes and let me deal with this. You’re safe, I’ll keep you safe.”

All odds were against me, so it did feel as if I was lying. But then again, there was no way I was going to tell a child that we could possibly die because the scary entity was back.

“Not your child,” it repeated again, sending cold shivers down my spine.

The weirdest part was that no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t see anything. Even the dark silhouette I once encountered wasn’t anywhere to be seen.
