It’s another average day for me as I bike to work. My clothes, the baggy blue tracksuit and t-shirt, and my mood are identical to what they have been for the past month. I chuckle a little bit as the thought of what people would think of me if they saw me crosses my mind. As I glanced up at the rolling white clouds blocking out the sun, leaving the neighbours doused in dull light and flicker shadows. Like usual the dream of sun soaked days and enjoyable bike rides, floated in front of me like a mirage before fading away into the darkness.

A few minutes later, I arrived at work, gently slowing down to a stop. A bump on the road  sent me spiralling to the floor. Getting up quickly, I hoped that no one saw a thing. I finished the end of my journey by walking to the back. Fumbling around with the bike lock, before attaching it to the shipping containers where it would stay for the day. I wiped the mud off my fingers, before walking into the building with a loud bang!

"Dammit! I slammed it again. Boss is gonna kill me."

Freezing for a minute, waiting for an angry yell, which never came. I crept upstairs to the changing room.

After getting changed into the blue overalls, which make me look a bit like a smurf, I walk over to one of my only friends at work. Glancing around for my boss as I do, hoping he isn’t in yet so that he did not not hear the door slam.

I muttered to him,“Is the boss still not here yet, Alex?”

He looked down at me to reply. Then suddenly there was a massive flash of white, blinding light. Not being able to see, I fell backwards to the floor with a light thud.

A few seconds later, I still could not see a thing except for pure white. It was extremely disorientating, I could feel that I was looking around, but nothing in my vision changed at all. It was as if I was in a kind of white space.

“Are you still there Aidan!?” Alex yelled out.

“Will you please not shout?” I moan, as my left ears begin to ring from his loud voice which also broke the illusion of what I felt. It took a few more seconds for my ears to stop ringing and the white in my vision to disappear. Looking around rapidly to find any changes. Everything appeared to be the same except for the floating rocks, with there being one rock per person.

‘Wait…..floating rocks!’ I began to scream in my head in shock as well as in fear, but I found that after seeing them I had the desire to reach out and grab one.

Each rock however looked exactly the same. A solid smooth grey colour without a single blemish on the surface. Looking around, each one was also floating the same height above the ground. It was like they were the exact same rock, I couldn’t find a single difference in any of them.

“Last I checked, rocks couldn’t float, right?” I said this to no one in particular, but my words prompted the deafly silence to go away.

Everyone began to start talking, some more worried than others, but not a single person went near the rocks at all. Alex had walked off to go and see if the same thing was happening in the other room, leaving me more or less alone. Well, there were others but I never really had interacted with them before in the past in any way.

I started to move closer to the rock that was seemingly mine. Well, I am assuming it is mine, due to how it was closest to me compared to the others. The others saw me though and before I knew what was happening Alex had come back, and was dragging me away from it.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you. Jason touched one, he then just disappeared…” He was whispering this next to my ear, I guess it was so that no one could hear so that they wouldn’t be scared, but I couldn't be sure about this.

I looked back at the rock in surprise, wondering what it actually was.

“Alex, by the way did the rock disappear with him too?” I said this rather loudly though, I guess it was to my shock that I didn’t think about how I should have been quieter.

Before he could reply, someone screamed out. “Who is gone!?”

The others all quickly mentioned the same thing as they then rushed through to the other room, to find out for themselves. Alex looked at me quickly before rushing off after them, to make sure nothing crazy happened through there.

It didn’t take long before I could hear someone wailing. I assumed it was one of the girls who worked here. Rumour had it that most had a crush on him. Guess it is more than rumour now.

I looked back at the rock, nearest to me again. The feeling. No, the attraction to hold it was getting stronger.

‘A little touch shouldn’t do anything, right?’

My mind went into overdrive at all the outcomes as I slowly inched my way over to it again. When I was directly in front of it, I brought out my hand and reached out to touch it. As my fingertips brushed against the smooth surface, the white light flashed again. Though this time, I was not affected nearly as much except for the white light, but the disorenating effect didn’t come again, allowing me not to fall over like before. In fact I felt like I could still walk. I slowly took a few steps forward and could even hear my footsteps echoing around me.

Wait, my footsteps don’t echo here. Looking around myself at the white light, a horrifying thought came to my mind.

What if this isn’t just a white light?

As the thought reeled through my head, I slumped down to the ground, just looking around as my mind carried on going past overdrive and into what only could be described as insanity.I didn’t say a thing for a few reasons: one, I was in shock. I mean, I'm meant to be at work, and magic, or whatever this is, should not be happening. This kind of stuff was reserved for web novels and films. The other reason is that I was the only person around. I couldn’t see another soul that was in this white space with me.Finally raising up some courage, I yelled out hoping to prove myself wrong and that I would hear someone's voice breaking through this white world. “Hello!”....I felt like I could hear my voice echoing in the distance, but everything soon returned to the eerie silence that I had only jus

With the collar being clamped onto my neck I lost the will power to move my body completely. I just layed there. I could faintly feel a tugging on my arms, like someone was trying to pick me up.I didn't even bother to look up. After all, what is the point? I had a metal collar around my neck. In the dream I was back home, and was just going out to a party with my friends.Thud!I landed on the floor as the soldier kicked me again.“You slave!” He yelled while pointing at me. “Get moving or I will happily show you what it means to taste the whip! Now! Move!”I jumped to my feet and rushed past the other survivors to be the first outside. Stepping into the light, I stumbled before catching myself.

We had been marching for what felt like hours now. Well it was not marching, well the soldiers were. The survivors were more just walking together as well all were just following the lead of the officers. I could just about make out there helmet plumes over the mass of heads.Though it was weird though, I thought the officers would have horses, being officers and all. The soldiers around us, still had the leather armour, with the black helmets, bit they now alongside the sword that I had seen some have previously. They all were carrying spears as well. It is like everytime that I see them, there is something different about them.Ignoring all of this though, my feet are really starting to hurt.I glanced down at them for what felt like the millionth time in

I kept looking around. My hands also couldn’t stop shaking.‘This is it. This has to be it. The bandits must be in this wood somewhere.’As we walked through the woods, I began to gradually slow down. At this point I was near the back of the group. Behind us though, were a couple of hundred soldiers, each armed to the teeth.

As we marched on, I looked around. Feeling much more lonely without having Lance around. His smile and laughter always seemed to make everything feel fine, like we weren’t slaves at all. He is gone though. Now all I feel is dread for what is to come. This was only the first out of ten battles and that was even if the words that the commander said could be trusted. I mean probably lied, just trying to give us some false hope to fight for. I mean who would let their slaves go and be free after making them experience all of this...unless they don't expect us to survive that long? The feeling of dread began to increase as I began to think and worry about what my future might hold...as I was thinking that same word came into my mind again, almost like a magic spell. Survive. It calmed me down, at least calmed me enough.

Then I bounced up again as the wagon I was on went another bump, with that bump though, the screaming had stopped. As I looked around to try and see what the sudden screaming was about. I heard someone who was at the back of the wagon throw up. I looked other confused as to why they would so suddenly throw up. By the time that they had gotten ahold of themselves and were ready to talk we had already moved on a bit, and the putrid smell of their vomit had started to waft around. The smell of that was disgusting, and I suddenly found myself not wanting to know what had caused it, though I still listened in as they spoke.“Someone had...fallen off a wagon...I guess their legs were run ove

After the soldier had left, I got up and sat down on the left-hand side of the wagon. The hard surface of the seat, not at all feeling comfortable. Leading to me shuffling and moving around for a few minutes trying to at least find some sort of comfort on the seat. In the end, I just gave up and focused on the roll in my hand. Then I after looking over it and wiping off the little bit of wood that gotten caught into the roll as it rolled across the wagon. I began to slowly eat through the roll. It only lasted a few seconds before the whole thing was completely devoured. I looked at my hands for a few seconds wishing that the roll was larger so that it would last more. Finally after giving up hope for a roll to suddenly appear. I began to look around myself, and try to find something interesting to look at.Around me, were ten o

“Uhh…”As I slowly came back to my senses, I noticed that I was no longer in the wagon, but had at some point in time been moved outside. I was in the dirt.As I slowly got up, I spat some dirt out, that had somehow found its way inside of my mouth. Even then I could still swear that I could taste it in there.Next, once I was sitting up, I brought my wrist up to my face. On it, was the tattoo. It was done is a now what looked black in. The tattoo itself was fairly simple. It was a rectangular box, inside of which was a shield with a sun on, much like the flag of the country we were in. Behind that shield were two interlocking spears. Apart from that, there was some kind of writing below the image, but I had no idea what any of it meant. This was the first time in this place, that I had encountered this. In fact, as I thought it seems like I was incredibly lucky to not have run into this kind of problem before.

“Ahhhh!”A loud scream woke me up from my dream. When I looked around, all I could see were the others with who I had set camp. The man I guard just glanced back at me. In his eyes, I saw nothing. There was no spark, they were just empty and cold.‘Will I end up like this? Is this what surviving means? To become detached from the world..is this what I want?’“It is rude to stare at people you know.”I looked away, to the floor as I heard him. Then, still feeling embarrassed, I began to brush the dust around that was on the floor.“Dude, if you are just going to do that. Take guard duty and let me sleep.&

As I reached the fork again, I went right going down the only path that I had yet to take. I couldn’t hear any fighting down this path though at least not anymore. Sometimes I would come across some bodies, but I could not tell who is who. The bandits and us the slaves all were wearing the same style of armour. This would make it incredibly difficult to tell apart each other when I reach the fighting.Ting!I heard the faint sound of clashing metal, and could smell some blood. It made my stomach churn as I almost felt like I was back at the bandit camp, seeing Lance get riddled by the arrows. A tear began to fall down my face as I hit myself with my spare hand.Shake out of it! You can not be thinking of him for now, you have to focus. I must survive for him.
