Akiko quickly retreated to the corner of the bathroom, clutching her phone tightly. There was nothing she could do. Her body was tense as her eyes remained fixed on Kenji, who looked extremely angry.
With a trembling voice, Akiko whispered, "Oji-san..."
"Oji-san!" Akiko screamed as Kenji's rough hand snatched her phone away.
Without blinking, Kenji threw the phone against the bathroom wall, shattering it into pieces.
"Why did you do that?" Akiko wailed as she fell to the floor, gathering the fragments of her phone that were irreparable. The phone wouldn’t turn on, and the screen was cracked.
"I told you to stay here! You don't deserve to go back to that family!" Kenji hissed and tried to force Akiko to stand, but she pushed his hand away.
"No. I want to go back. I need to be with Yuto!"
Kenji pulled Akiko’s face close, gripping her cheeks with his hand. "What do you like about him? He's weak! And he doesn't make you happy at all!"
"He's not weak. I’m happy with him! I’m---"
"LIES! If he had some balls, he wouldn't have let his mother humiliate you. You have to stay here!"
"I can't! How could I remain after what transpired between us?!" Akiko screamed out the horrifying truth with disgust. Akiko wanted to return to Yuto, but her desire to leave Kenji's house wasn't only based on that.
Akiko couldn’t bear being in this house because it reminded her of the shameful act she had just committed with Kenji. It was a terrible disgrace. Karina was right; her parents would be deeply disappointed and saddened if they knew she had done something so disgraceful with Kenji.
"Do you remember what happened between us?" Kenji's hands, which had been holding Akiko's cheeks, loosened slightly.
He stared at Akiko with his dark eyes. "Do you remember what happened last night?" Kenji pressed for an answer.
Akiko turned away, unwilling to respond. She might not have remembered at first, but now her memory is slowly coming back. The recollection made Akiko want to vomit. She remembered how she had been the first to undress in front of Kenji.
"So, you remember?" Kenji correctly interpreted Akiko's silence.
"If you remember, you should know that you can't go back to that man. Your body is mine!" Kenji hissed. Kenji’s memory of what happened was also very clear. Seeing Akiko in front of him brought back all the sensations he had experienced the night before.
“NO!” Akiko roared and shook her head, pushing Kenji away; however, Kenji had already grabbed her waist.
"If you insist on going back there, then I will repeat what we did last night. I'll make you scream with pleasure until you forget that useless man!"
"No!" Akiko struggled, but Kenji easily overpowered her. Her body was less than half Kenji’s size. Kenji's hands easily reached for the front of Akiko's blouse, tearing the buttons open.
"Don’t do this, Oji-san!" Akiko pleaded, trembling with fear, but continued to resist, screaming and moaning while pushing Kenji’s face away as he tried to kiss her again.
Kenji still smelled the alluring scent from the night before on Akiko’s neck and chest. The aroma lingered and brought back memories of Akiko’s body.
“Oji-san!” Akiko screamed with all her might, and eventually, the sound penetrated Kenji's mind, snapping him out of his lust.
Kenji froze, closing his eyes and clicking his tongue, trying to steady his breathing. The image of Akiko’s body was difficult to erase from his mind. Finally, Kenji managed to pull away from Akiko and release her.
Akiko curled up beside the bathtub, hugging her knees and covering her face. She sobbed once again, with her shoulders shaking. Akiko was even surprised that her eyes could still produce tears, considering how many had already been shed since yesterday and today.
"I will take you to that man!" With a cold expression, Kenji made his decision and turned to leave the bathroom. Akiko’s pleas continued, even though they conflicted with Kenji’s own desires.
Akiko, feeling nearly insane, welcomed this decision with a sliver of hope. A bit of warmth emerged after seeing only storms before.
Akiko stood up unsteadily, looking at her disheveled appearance. She wanted to cry again when she saw her torn clothes, but she took a deep breath, steeling herself. She found solace in the fact that her uncle had consented to return her to Yuto's house.
After gathering the remnants of her phone, Akiko returned to the room. She took clothes from one of the wardrobes, which she assumed was Karina's, but she didn't mind. There was no way she could go out wearing such a tattered outfit.
Carrying her small bag, Akiko left the room and met Kenji, who was waiting by the front door. They were silent as they headed to the garage. Kenji drove, and Akiko waited by the gate until Kenji stopped the car.
The drive to Yuto’s house was also filled with the same silence. Akiko occasionally wiped the tears that still stubbornly fell. She had washed her face earlier, trying to make her appearance look normal to avoid raising questions if Kaede and Yuto asked.
But Akiko found it challenging to calm herself. Her body still trembled as she thought about what Kenji had almost done to her. It was difficult to hide her fear.
Akiko knew her uncle was kind—well, he used to be. In her memory, Kenji had been very kind. But what he had done in the bathroom terrified her.
Akiko continued to clench her hands on her lap during the journey. She kept her gaze down and didn't look at Kenji. Finally, Kenji stopped the car.
Akiko looked up gratefully, as Kenji had kept his promise. She was back in front of Yuto’s house. Without saying goodbye, Akiko ran out toward the gate of Yuto’s house.
With trembling hands, Akiko rang the bell several times. The gate was always locked, so she couldn’t just enter. When she saw the gate move, Akiko stepped back slightly, and her body froze when she saw who came out: Kaede, her mother-in-law, with a smile that resembled an Oni (demon in Japanese belief) with fangs.
"So, my daughter-in-law, who is also a slut, has come back?" It was a sharp and painful jab for Akiko. Her eyes quickly filled with tears again. Her already fragile spirit faced another trial from the person she had always feared.
"I didn’t expect that, besides being barren, you’re also a cheap woman. Don’t tell me you’ve been sleeping with many men and betraying Yuto all this time!"
"No! I haven’t done that! Really, Oka-san*. I truly haven’t..."
"I don’t care anymore. It's clear that I was right all along. You are barren, because even though you opened your legs for any man, you still haven't become pregnant! Perhaps it's karma that brings misfortune!" Kaede opened the door wider, then threw two suitcases onto the street.
"Leave this house! I don’t want to see you again. And don’t ever see Yuto again! Your marriage is over. I am ashamed to have a daughter-in-law like you. UGH!" Kaede spat on Akiko’s face, then slammed the gate shut.
"Wait! Oka-san! Don’t kick me out! Oka-san!" She pounded on the wooden door for a while, but Kaede wouldn't open it. The woman wouldn’t listen to her pleas or explanations.
"Yuto? Are you going to just stand by? Anata*?!" Akiko didn’t even know if he was inside, but she didn’t want to believe that Yuto would let this happen.
But, of course, the door didn’t open. Akiko’s fate with that house and Yuto had come to an end. Akiko slumped, unable to scream anymore, while one hand wiped her face, smeared with sweat, Kaede’s spit, and tears.
"I’m not…" Akiko couldn’t even defend herself right now because what Kaede said held some truth. What else was she, but a cheap woman? It was clear she had slept with her own uncle, destroying her marriage.
Suppressing her sobs to avoid turning her cries into wails, Akiko crouched in front of the gate while her hands gripped the suitcases that Kaede had thrown.
The small warmth and hope Akiko had felt when Kenji agreed to take her home turned out to be an illusion. In the end, Akiko had to face a bitter reality. She had become a cheap woman in one night, but she had also become a widow in a short time.

Anata ; HusbandAkiko wiped her tears away, taking two suitcases near her feet and using them as support to stand. She felt she had no more strength left. With vacant eyes, Akiko walked away from the gate. She didn’t know what to do or how to handle the situation. She didn't understand how Kaede knew what had happened.Karina shouldn't have spoken again, since she had already received the money she wanted and had her wish to leave Kenji fulfilled. But now it didn’t matter who had informed Kaede; Akiko’s worst fears had come true.Akiko sighed deeply, trying to hold back her tears as she staggered along. Physically, her body wasn’t in pain, but her heart was bruised and bleeding. She couldn’t even stand up straight.Akiko walked without looking anywhere, but she stopped when she noticed a familiar car stopping beside her. It's Kenji's car.Kenji hadn’t left. Kenji had been standing in front of Yuto's house earlier, clearly observing how Kaede had driven Akiko away. He had been following her the whole
Akiko didn’t know how long she had spent sitting silently in the corner of her room because, when she came, the surroundings had already turned dark. She turned on the light, took a stack of futons from the sliding closet, and laid them out on the floor to sleep. But even though she lay down and felt very tired, Akiko couldn’t fall asleep. Besides feeling restless and scared of Kenji, Akiko was also afraid of her own future. She had never felt so lost and hopeless, as if the whole world didn’t want to accept her. Akiko then closed her eyes, took a few deep breaths, and tried to clear her mind of all the negative thoughts that were gnawing at her sanity and well-being.At that moment, Akiko wanted to improve her current life and find a way to stop sinking deeper into despair. Indeed, contemplating Yuto and everything else wasn't the appropriate approach.“I will work,” Akiko muttered. After clearing her mind, she finally came to a decision that she found quite satisfying.By working,
Akiko quickly set the table for breakfast, rushing because she didn't want to be late. It would be detrimental to her reputation if she arrived late for her job interview. She arranged the rice and miso soup side by side. Having found some shrimp earlier, Akiko decided to make shrimp karaage, recalling that her uncle liked it.Carefully, Akiko placed the chopsticks on their rest, right next to the bowl. There was no height difference between the chopsticks, and after straightening them several times, Akiko realized that all this extra neatness wasn't necessary.Kaede wasn't around to scold her, even if the chopsticks weren't perfectly aligned. That was how detailed Kaede's demands for perfection from Akiko were. The woman would chastise her for even a chopstick-length difference.Akiko shook her head, realizing she needed to let go of the habit of always striving for perfection. No one would scold her anymore. Akiko clenched her fists, trying to suppress the overwhelming sense of rel
Akiko bowed, slipped off her shoes, and stepped into the house, almost tiptoeing to avoid making any noise. She had to be careful because she was coming home very late. The restaurant where she had applied for a job had only been willing to interview her after nightfall, waiting for the owner to arrive. Of course, Akiko had recklessly waited, as it was the only restaurant left.Luckily, her efforts were not in vain. She was also offered a job at the restaurant. With that, Akiko officially had two jobs: one at the supermarket and another as a waitress at the restaurant. Although both were menial jobs, at least by working at two places simultaneously, Akiko had hope of saving money more quickly. Akiko had calculated her income in enormous detail during her journey home earlier and estimated that within the next three or four months, she would have enough money to rent a modest apartment and start her new life.Though three or four months was long, Akiko had to accept it because she ha
“AAGHH!” Akiko screamed, covering her face with her hands and shaking her head, not wanting to accept the kiss. But Kenji grabbed both of Akiko's hands and pulled them away from her face."What more could you expect from that family? I already told you to stay here and forget about them! Am I not enough?" Kenji's voice softened, but Akiko was already too scared, and her body trembled even more. With a final act of desperation, Akiko shook off Kenji's hands and managed to free herself. Kenji was drunk, so his grip wasn't strong. Akiko easily pushed Kenji aside. Without looking back, Akiko ran as fast as she could to her room and shut the door.Panting, Akiko crumbled once more. She sat down, hugging herself, trying to calm her trembling body and hold back the sobs that were almost escaping her lips. "Why..." Finally, the sobs came with tears.Akiko felt so alone, and the world seemed so terrifying. It was the same feeling she had when she saw Yuto remain silent and Kaede say cruel th
"Shokuji o tanoshinde." (Enjoy your meal.)Akiko bowed and then stepped back with a smile on her face, adjusting the kimono she was wearing. The outfit was a bit troublesome because Akiko wasn't used to it, but the kimono was a requirement for her job at the restaurant. The restaurant's uniform was chosen because it had a classic theme, serving authentic traditional Japanese cuisine with decor that strongly evoked the atmosphere of ancient Japan. At first, Akiko had doubts about whether she could do the job, as her only experience wearing a kimono was during a few summer festivals she had attended with Rie.But after two days and some tips from the other waitstaff at the restaurant, Akiko quickly adapted and could now perform her tasks smoothly—even running while wearing the kimono without messing up its shape. Akiko also enjoyed the work environment at the restaurant. It was so busy that she quickly forgot about the miserable aspects of her real life."Akiko, please bring this to roo
"What happened to your hand?" As they passed each other near the kitchen, Kenji noticed Akiko's bandaged index finger."A cut from a broken cup," Akiko said as briefly as possible, then bowed and quickly fled. She was en route to work at the station. Of course, Akiko hurried out, trying to prevent Kenji from asking further questions or getting any ideas about stopping her.She already regretted waking up late that morning, likely due to crying for so long the previous night. Losing one of her jobs had nearly driven Akiko back to the brink of despair. But now, Akiko had regained her resolve for the day. She deliberately took the morning shift at the convenience store so she would have free time later to look for another job. Akiko might try asking at another restaurant or store. She wouldn’t give up on just one job. She didn’t want to extend her stay at Kenji’s place any longer. Akiko had a new goal: to sleep soundly in her own apartment soon.Over the past few weeks of living with Ken
Kenji sat on a shiny, dark leather chair, his expression blank, staring at the two people bowing before him. However, Kenji's silence only made the two of them appear even more anxious. They knew that a silent Kenji was more dangerous than a talking one.“Which one of you injured her hand?” After a prolonged silence, Kenji finally posed the question. The two people in front of him grew increasingly nervous, exchanging glances. His question only poured fear into their mounting anxiety.“I... I did, Sandaime” (Third Generation Leader). The man with a tattoo on his cheek answered hesitantly, bowing again.“Yamada? What did you do to her?” Kenji leaned his head back, now focusing solely on Yamada.“I kicked a piece of a broken cup, but the girl was holding it. Her hand was cut as a result." Yamada explained, bowing even deeper—more than ninety degrees.Kenji lowered his crossed legs, sighing. The small movement made Yamada recoil, terrified of what Kenji might do. But Kenji did nothing un
"But that’s a lie. I just pretended to be pregnant," Akiko replied, shaking her head. She sensed that the doctor in front of her was making fun of her because the outrageous lie was too much for her.“What?” Rin was, of course, confused by Akiko’s reaction. She understood Akiko might find it hard to believe, but the confession was strange. She had no idea Akiko had ever pretended to be pregnant.“Yeah, she didn’t ask for mochi or anything,” Kenji chimed in, expressing disbelief.“What?”Akiko and Rin asked at the same time because Kenji’s response was even stranger.“She wasn’t nauseous or anything; she looked normal,” Kenji said, still trying to steer the conversation away from Mochi.“Pregnancy without nausea is quite possible. It’s likely Tanaka-san is experiencing such a pregnancy. You don’t remember when your last cycle was; that’s prob
"Are you sure you're not experiencing dizziness or nausea?" Kyoko inquired, observing that Akiko was dismissing the symptoms."Not at all." Akiko shook her head and moved on to the next question.Akiko was sitting on a hospital bed, filling out a questionnaire to narrow down what was happening with her body. Akiko had already undergone several tests, including CT scans and more, with Dr. Hayashi earlier in the day. But the results were negative.Dr. Hayashi had confirmed there was no recurring tumor—for the second time. So, he concluded something else was causing the nosebleeds, though he didn’t yet know what.Hayashi asked Akiko to answer a series of questions to better understand her condition. It was a somewhat strange method, but necessary since Hayashi was still in Tokyo and couldn’t come immediately as Kenji had requested. He had a few surgeries to perform and could only fly to Osaka the next day.So, Akiko had been answerin
"Is this the last one?" Akiko asked as she stepped out of the car and looked at the building in front of her.The large building was shaped like a church, with towers and a European-style design in a reddish hue. But Akiko didn’t see the name of a church on the sign attached to the gate. The sign read "Akarui Hizashi," which roughly means "bright sunlight.""Yes, let's go inside." Yui opened the iron gate and entered as if the place were very familiar to her.Akiko understood the building's purpose after seeing its huge yard. Children were running around, playing with the fallen leaves scattered everywhere. Akiko noticed a broom lying near their feet; they were too busy playing to finish their chores."This... is an orphanage," Akiko finally understood."Yes, this is the orphanage where Ryu and I grew up," Yui said."Oh, Ryu was here too?" Kyoko stepped forward to observe the surroundings."Yes. This is one of the orphanages man
"What is that?" Ryu asked, intrigued as Kenji suddenly stopped moving."A letter." Kenji snapped out of his daydream, startled by seeing the name Ishida. It was his name; there was no doubt about it, but seeing Masaki write that name felt like something unpleasant was looming.Upon opening the unsealed envelope, Kenji discovered several documents of varying sizes and thickness. He chose one particular piece of paper that stood out—it was sealed in a plastic clip and folded. Kenji opened it.The document inside was a marriage certificate, with the names Kenji Tanaka and Akiko—Ishida. The certificate also included their photo, stamped with a hanko seal."What does this mean?!" Ryu exclaimed, staring at the name Ishida following Akiko’s name, confused."What kind of crazy joke is this?" Kenji was furious. He had no idea what the letter meant, especially with Akiko being referred to as Ishida.Kenji grabbed another sheet, sligh
Kenji drummed his fingers on the table, staring at Murakami, who was bowing deeply before him, clearly displeased."Is that all you have to say to me? Don't make me regret sparing your life! I want information, not nonsense about how you don’t know anything!" Kenji hissed as he stood, and Murakami immediately recoiled in fear."I truly don’t have any information about the other ichizoku involved in that business. Everything was handled by Nidaime himself. I only found out by accident that there were other clans involved. Nidaime unintentionally let it slip."Murakami explained, glancing at Kenji's feet, which were now positioned close to his face. He bowed again, his body trembling as he imagined those feet flying toward his head. But Kenji was in a far better mood than before. He simply looked down at the back of Murakami’s head."My father couldn't have handled this on his own! He must have—""Maybe he did. Nidaime
Akiko, together with Kyoko, followed Yui down the unfamiliar corridor of the house. Even for Kyoko, who had been there longer than Akiko, the place felt foreign. Eventually, Yui led them to the second floor. The large wooden staircase, a deep brown, appeared sturdy, though it likely had been there for many years."I’m taking you upstairs so that you can have a better view of this place and what you now possess," Yui said, directing her words specifically at Akiko."Yes," Akiko nodded. As Akiko was now Kenji's wife, she understood that Yui was referring to ownership."We’ve arrived." Yui spread her arms, leaning against the wooden railing of the second-floor balcony.Of course, Akiko gasped in awe. From the balcony, they could see the entire area surrounding the large house. In addition to a garden, Akiko could make out the roofs of smaller houses scattered around the estate—houses she had seen when she walked in the day bef
“I... don’t know. I don’t really keep track of... mmm... my menstrual cycle carefully, so I’m not sure.”Akiko shook her head uncertainly. She never felt the need to keep track of such things since she didn’t have to worry about getting pregnant. Akiko couldn’t remember the last time she had her period.“Have you been feeling nauseous or dizzy?” Kenji recalled how Akiko had previously suffered from severe nausea and dizziness.“No, nothing. I’m fine.” Akiko shook her head confidently. She hadn’t experienced any nausea. Nothing had changed.“Are you sure?” Kenji inquired again, hoping for a different response. But Akiko could only shake her head.“What… I mean… I didn’t know you wanted me to be pregnant so badly.” Akiko stammered, surprised. She sat up straight in front of Kenji, who was resting his head on her lap.In all
"Oh, right. I forgot. Thank you."Akiko, unable to say anything else, smiled nervously at Shibata, who returned to his place. There was no way Akiko could explain that it was all a lie in front of so many people, who might think she was being rude.“I also FORGOT. I shouldn’t have poured that sake for you.” While looking at Akiko with wide eyes, Kenji emphasized the word "forgot." He normalized the situation, despite his obvious confusion.“Ha... yes.” Akiko’s nervous smile became more obvious, but what else could she say?“I may have surprised all of you, but I think it’s time I introduce Akiko to you. This is Akiko Tanaka, my wife.”At the very least, Kenji's words elicited a reaction—shock and astonishment. So far, there had only been confusion after Shibata mentioned the pregnancy.“From now on, she’ll be living here,” Kenji added to ensure there w
"There's going to be a formal dinner tonight. Do you mind joining?" Kenji asked, gently tapping Akiko's cheek as she gazed out at the view from the car window. They were on their way home after the ceremony at the temple."Dinner with who? Do I have to go?" Akiko inquired, feeling hesitant. She had been slightly disappointed yesterday when Kenji didn’t properly introduce her to the people they met, but after hearing Kyoko explain the environment Kenji lived in, Akiko felt it was fine not to be introduced. Still, it seemed like something that couldn't be avoided."Sorry, but you have to. People will start asking questions if you keep staying with me without knowing who you are." Kenji tightened his grip on her hand, trying to reassure her."Don't worry, I’ll only introduce you. You don’t have to answer any questions if you don’t want to. There's no need to feel awkward around anyone; you'll be there with me. If you don’t answe
