Alaina woke up and stared at the beige wall that made up her room, she got up and walked over to her window. She had dreamed for the first time in a very long time. She was thinking about the boy, that face and those sorrow filled eyes. She had saved him because she felt sorry for him, now she couldn’t stop thinking about him. Something about his eyes, she thought. She decided sitting here wasn’t going to help get him off her mind. So she decided to go take a run. She loved to run, it helped clear her mind. She passed by the library on her way out and noticed that Arianna was sleeping in the chair. She looked so peaceful she didn’t want to wake her up. She wrote her a note to tell her that she would be back soon and not to worry.
She stepped out onto the porch and looked out at the woods. Leaves on the trees were a deep green, brown leaves littered the ground from the previous falls. Birds were off in the distance chirping, flying around in circles, looking for their mate. It’s a beautiful world here, what a shame we will have to leave soon, she thought.
With a blur of movement, she was off the porch and a half a mile away. She didn’t know where she was heading, she just wanted to run. To not think about her sister leaving them, she didn’t want to think about the boy that haunted her memories and her dreams. Just running, the wind blowing in her face as she sped through the woods. Dodging trees and jumping over the roots that stuck up out of the ground trying to trip her. She figured she would just run deeper into the woods and then circle back to the house.
She was circling around to head back to the house when she seen the boy. She stopped running and stared at him. He had something in his hands, she couldn’t tell what it was but he kept looking down at it. She couldn’t move, all she could do was stare at him. What was it about him that captivated her like this? She couldn’t figure it out. He must have heard her cause he stopped walking and started to look around like he was looking for something. She didn’t move, she couldn’t decide whether or not to talk to him.
It would probably be in his best interest if she didn’t let him see her. But she knew that she needed to talk to him, if not then she would never get him out of her head. He started walking again, he didn’t look lost this time. What the hell, might as well, she told herself and stepped out of the shadows. He turned and looked at her, he looked so young. He had blue eyes that seemed to shine. He had dark hair that looked a little awkward against his fair skin. He just stood there looking at her.
She started to walk towards him, he continued to watch her. She stopped a few feet in front of him. A few moments passed before either one of them spoke, finally she couldn’t stand the silence anymore. But he spoke before she could.
“Hi, I’m Caleb” he said.
“Hello Caleb. What are you doing out here alone?” she asked
“I guess I could ask you the same thing.” She laughed and oh it was a beautiful laugh he thought.
“I live not too far from here.” she replied.
“Alone?”
“No, my sisters live with me. My name is Alaina.” Well, just one sister now, she thought with a little despair.
“It’s nice to meet you, I don’t think I’ve seen you in town before.” He said.
“You wouldn’t have. You see, me and my sisters don’t go into town very often. There is no need.” Alaina walked over to a rock and sat down. She looked up at him and stared straight into his eyes. He had piercing ice blue eyes, it was like looking into the blue oceans of the Antarctic, icy blue on the surface and midnight underneath.
“I don’t mean to sound to forward and please forgive me for saying this, but you are really beautiful.” Caleb said. If she could blush, this would be the moment.
“Thank you, you are very beautiful yourself.” And now she was really glad she couldn’t blush. She had no clue why she said that. Although he can blush and he did.
Alaina laughed. “I’m sorry, I don’t know where that came from. I—” she heard the rustling before she even seen the cat. It smelled its prey and was moving in fast and quietly. No ordinary human would have been able to hear the sound. But she wasn’t an ordinary human, she wasn’t human at all. And she could hear the cat coming. It wouldn’t be after her, she thought, but after Caleb. When she turned to look at him, he could all but see the fear in her eyes. She didn’t know what to do, she couldn’t stop the cat without Caleb seeing her and trying to figure out what she is. The cat was moving fast, very fast. She had to do something, she couldn’t let him get hurt.
Caleb reached out to her and put his hand on her shoulder, “What’s wrong? Are you ok?” he asked. She could see the concern for her in his eyes. Oh, the hell with it, she thought, I can’t let him die. I’ll just have to take my chances.
“Can you promise me something?”
“Anything” he said so with such certainty and no hesitation what so ever in his voice.
“Promise that you won’t freak out by what I’m fixing to tell you and what you see afterwards. And know that I will not hurt you in any kind of way.”
“Ok, I promise.”
Alaina sighed, the cat was getting closer, she couldn’t see it just yet but she figured it was a mountain lion by the smell. And from the sound of its steps, it was a male, and a big one. “I know this is going to sound really funny to you and you aren’t going to be able to understand how I can hear it, but there is a pretty big cat on the hunt right now. From what I figure it’s a mountain lion. It already has the scent of its prey and headed here fast.”
It took a moment for it to sink in, his expressions changed from wonder to looking like she was some kind of psycho and trying to scare him, to shock and then to fear when he realized that she said headed here fast. The cat was headed here, and the scent of its prey was them.
“We have to get out of here and fast, maybe if we hurry, we can get away. We have a little bit of a head start, I can hear it and it’s far enough away so we might have a chance.”
He just stood there staring at her. She was losing her patience.
“Wait, if I don’t hear it, how can you?” he said.
“Just trust me right now. It’s not after me, it’s after you. And now you wouldn’t be able to outrun it. It’s already almost here.”
“But—I don’t understand. I’m really confused right now.”
She had gotten up off the rock and was trying to estimate how much longer it would be. Caleb sat down on the same rock and rubbed the bridge of his nose. He was trying to process everything when he heard this growling sound. He jerked his head up and saw Alaina in a crouching position like she was preparing to attack something. She turned to look at him, “No matter what happens, stay back and don’t try to help me. Try to remember that it can’t hurt me.”
He just stared at her, he didn’t know what to say. She looked so dangerous but he wasn’t scared of her. In that moment time almost stood still. He was watching her, she had such grace and beauty. Her movements were so fluid even as she leaped at the cat that was trying to kill him. They landed about ten feet from where he was standing, he couldn’t move or speak, all he could do was watch in horror as the woman he had dreamed about for so many nights was fighting a mountain lion. He wanted to help her, he didn’t want her to get hurt. It all happened so quickly, in one moment she was fighting the lion and the next she was standing over its dead body. When she turned to look at him her eyes had went from dark brown to a now bright red, almost the color of blood. Ok, now he was scared.
Finally able to move, he took a step back. She didn’t move, just stood there with a pleading look in her eyes. “What the hell are you?” he demanded.
“No, stay back.” He told her as she started towards him.
“Please Caleb, don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you.” She said almost pleadingly. “I will explain I promise. But you needn’t be afraid of me.”
“What are you?” he asked again. His legs felt like they would give out on him and cause him to fall so he sat down on the ground and waited for her to explain.
She paced back and forth trying to figure out the best way to tell him. She didn’t want to be like hey guess what, I’m a vampire. He would definitely freak out then. She heard a growling noise a whipped around prepared to fight but there wasn’t anything there. It took her a moment to realize that it had been her growling from frustration. There wasn’t going to be any easy way to do this. Just tell him…
“Ok, keep in mind that you promised not to freak out. And I’ve told you that I would never hurt you. There isn’t any easy way to tell you this. I’m pretty sure you’ve heard the legends about vampires?”
“Sure, I’ve heard about them. But what does that have to do with anything?” She could hear the impatience in his voice.
“What do the legends tell you about vampires?”
He looked at her like she was losing her mind. What does it matter? “They drink blood, human blood, they are immortal.” He sighed “I don’t know why you want me to tell you this, vampires are just legends, they don’t actually exist.”
“Please, what else do you know about them. What can they do?” She was near begging him to guess what it is she is without having to come out and tell him.
He rolled his eyes but continued. “From what I’ve read, they can move really fast, they are really strong. They can’t come out in daylight because it will burn their skin. Some live with other vampires, some don’t. Now are you going to tell me what the hell just happened?!?”
This isn’t going to be easy, she thought, he just wasn’t putting it together. “I will show you better that I can tell you.” And with that she jumped up to stand on the lowest limb on the tree closest to her, which was about 15 feet off the ground.
He had to remember to close his mouth, how could she do that. With the next second she was back on the ground just feet from him, he didn’t even see her move.
“We do have speed and strength, but we don’t burn up in sunlight. That is just a myth. But most vamps drink human blood, me and my sisters try to live off of animal blood or donated human blood. My older sister has killed humans for food before, more than I have. My younger sister and I have only killed a few times, but that has been over three hundred years ago. Please don’t be frightened, I will not harm you.”
He couldn’t remember to close his mouth this time. He just sat there staring at her not believing what she was trying to tell him, but at the same time he couldn’t not believe her. Everything he seen wouldn’t let him think she was just crazy. Her eyes weren’t red anymore, that were back to that beautiful chocolate brown. He tried to look at her teeth to see if she had any fangs but he couldn’t really tell. It didn’t look like it though.
“I don’t know what to say. It’s hard to believe something like that but at the same time...” he paused for a minute, “Everything that just happened makes it easy to believe.”
“Are you scared?” She had to ask him. She had to know.
“Honestly, a little bit. But for some strange and unknown reason I’m not scared of you, just the fact that vampires do exist. You saved my life, how could I be scared of you?”
She was a little relieved. But now he knew too much. Would he tell anyone? Now without a doubt, her and her sister were going to have to leave.
“I hate to ask you to make another promise to me, one that I’m not sure you can keep. But you have to promise to tell no one of this. Please, they will come hunt me and my sister, and I can’t let that happen.”
Caleb stood up, his legs finally able to hold him up without letting him fall. Now she really had fear in her eyes, although not for her it seemed, but for her sister. Her sister. Didn’t she say that she had two?
“I promise, I won’t tell anyone.” She walked towards him, slowly at first to gauge his reaction. When he didn’t budge, she was at his side in under a second. Their eyes met and neither one of them could move, from somewhere deep inside them, they connected. He leaned down and took her mouth to his. The kiss was gentle and slow, savoring the taste of each other. Alaina wrapped her arms around his neck, and met his kiss with passion of her own. He locked his hands around her waist and lifted her up so he could deepen the kiss. He could hear the low growling coming from her.
The taste of him was so seductive and she didn’t think she could get enough. He found himself sitting on the ground a second later and she was feet away with her back to him. Her eyes were red, and she didn’t want him to see that she had that kind of reaction to him.
“I must go,” she told him, “And you need to get back before they come looking for you. Don’t come back trying to find me, I won’t be here. We are leaving.” Before he could say anything, she was gone.
Scotland 2020 It was another one of those days where all it did was rain. The clouds hung low and dark and promised nothing other than more rain, maybe even a little bit of snow. She would like some snow, Arianna thought to herself. It would be a nice change to the rain. She stared out of her bedroom window, for miles and miles all there was to see was trees and hills. And rain. Frustrated she spun out of her room and down the stairs. She could hear the tv on in the living room. Alaina had to be just as bored as she was. Maybe enough to leave and find another place to live for a while, she was ready to go back to the states. She loved living there and the only reason she left was because Alaina came back from a run one day and was upset saying they needed to leave. She hadn’t tried to argue with her because ever since their older sister had left them there, it just didn’t seem the same. Truth to be told she had been ready to leave as well, she just didn’t want to say anything. A
“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Caleb, happy birthday to you!” His family came into the room with a very large and very unnecessary cake. Caleb sat in the living room trying to catch up on the work the chief of staff had given him for the conference he was going to in Los Angeles. He was a third-year resident at the community’s hospital. He had worked his ass off in college to finish early so he could apply to med school at Yale. And it paid off. He would only be a second year now if he hadn’t.Going to the conference along with him was one other resident and two attendings and they will be gone for a week. This
Alaina was looking out of the hotel window, they have been in New York for only a few days. Neither one of them had spoken or even been out of the room. She was thinking about everything that happened, she almost of understood what Abigail had done. Almost. It was at that point of time that was her favorite time of the day, when the sun was barely in the sky. Pinks, reds, and oranges colored the sky and the clouds. It was at this time when she could think most clearly. She knows that her sister didn’t leave with the intention to be with someone else. And if that had been the case, she would have told them. Perhaps they were too harsh with her. No, over a decade goes by without so much as a phone call or text message. She told herself. And the whole time she has been with him. She moved away from the window and paced back and forth. She might not have intended it, but she could’ve at least made some kind of contact with them the past few years. It’s true that time moves more slowly fo
The next morning, they went out to find a realtor and look for a house. To their disappointment, they didn’t find anything that would suit them. After a few weeks of house hunting, they finally found a house on the beach near Deer Creek Beach. Which was also in the state park. It was perfect for them, although they couldn’t move in right away, they had to wait for the current owners to move out. Finally, after two weeks they got the call that the owners were moved and they could come pick up the keys and start moving in. Leaving the realtors office, keys in hand, they couldn’t be happier. Now they had to go buy furniture to fill their new house, and shopping just made them even happier. After making arrangements to have everything delivered and set up for them, they went back to the hotel to get their stuff and check out. Before they left Santa Monica, they decided to celebrate by going surfing. They had been so busy trying to find a house they hadn’t had the chance to hit the wate
“What are you staying at?”“Ocean View Hotel”She turned onto Ocean Avenue and worked her way through the traffic to the hotel.“Why are you here? What, do you live here now too?” she asked.“No, I do not live here. A few other doctors and I are here for a convention.”
They were able to find a contractor that was able to come out that morning. Going through the house they told him everything they wanted done. Her phone rang, there was no name on the caller ID. She answered the call to find Caleb on the other end.“Alaina. Why did you leave?” he said.“How did you get my number?” she asked him.“I got it out of your phone yesterday when you weren’t looking. Now answer my question. Why did you leave?”&nb
Alaina was gone when Arianna woke up this morning. She turned on the screen of her phone and opened her picture gallery. Looking at the picture of her, Alaina, and Abigail. She wished Abigail was here, she would know what to do to help Alaina. She pulled up the keypad and dialed Abigail’s number, but she couldn’t make herself hit the dial button. Alaina would be furious at her if she called Abigail, but she didn’t know how else to help her sister. She was still debating about whether or not to call Abigail when she heard the knock at the front door. She opened up the door and was surprised to find Caleb on the other side. “What are you doing here?” she asked. “Where is Alaina?” he replied. “I don’t know, she was gone when I woke up. You shouldn’t be here.” she told him. “I don’t care. She can tell me to my face why she doesn’t want me since she doesn’t want to answer my phone calls.” Arianna sighed. “Come in then.” and she shut the door to behind him. He went over and sat o
Alaina left Caleb in his room and left him a note. She hated having to do this but he just wasn’t grasping the danger this could cause for him and for her, and for her sister. Regardless of her feelings for him, she had to do whatever it took to protect her sister. Protecting Arianna was her first priority. She would not be selfish and risk her sister's safety for her own happiness. What short lived happiness it would be, and it would be short lived. She got back home and she knew that Caleb would come back looking for her when he woke up. She had to make it look like they had left, at least for a few days. His flight back to North Dakota was the following day. Even if he delayed his trip, he couldn’t stay too long. He would want to get back home and go back to work. And if he did come here after he woke up and seen that they were gone, he wouldn’t want to stay anyway. At least that’s what she hoped. “Arianna, I need you to grab some dust covers and help me cover all the furniture,
Abigail and Nicholas stepped of the plane in Los Angeles and got a car. She put the address that Alaina sent her into the GPS and headed to the house. She was glad that Alaina was getting Arianna out of Devils Lake but she wasn’t happy that Alaina was going back. But Alaina needed to handle this situation, and if Alaina couldn’t, she would. She won’t take any chances when it came to her sisters. She didn’t want Alaina to go back alone, and her and Nicholas had talked about him staying with Arianna while Abigail goes back with Alaina. That was the only way she could make sure the situation would be taken care of. Nicholas wasn’t happy about it, but he finally gave in and agreed. They pulled up to the house and found that Alaina and Arianna were already there. Nicholas got their bags out of the trunk and followed Abigail in the house. Her sisters were waiting at the door to wrap her in a hug, all of them crying. Abigail hoped to never go this long without seeing her sisters again. Sh
“What the fuck?” Alaina was practically yelling at this point. As soon as she got back to the hotel room Arianna had showed her a picture of the amulet she had found. It was hanging around the neck of the witch that had killed their mother. They knew that witch wasn’t still alive. Alaina and Hannah had seen to that. After she had killed their mother, she disappeared for years. Then one night, while Alaina was visiting Hannah and her new daughter, Sybil tried to attack Hannah, and if Alaina hadn’t of been there, she may have succeeded. But Alaina was there, and her and Hannah killed her. Sybil couldn’t have been the one to give that amulet to Caleb, but it could have been one of her descendants. They weren’t even sure she even had any. But if it wasn’t, then it could have been a friend of Sybil’s looking for revenge. Either way, they had to get that amulet away from Caleb. It was sure to hold a lot of dark magic, since Sybil was one of the biggest practitioners and held the most power
“Arianna, look at this!” Alaina yelled suddenly, making Arianna jump. “What? Oh my.” Arianna said looking at Alaina’s computer screen. Alaina had managed to track down her mother’s friends last living relative. She couldn’t believe it. It was Caleb. “So, Caleb is Hannah’s so many greats grandson.” Arianna said. “Looks that way.” Alaina said. “I wonder if he knows.” “I don’t know. For a split second after that amulet knocked you on your ass, surprised crossed his face. I don’t think he knew what kind of power it held.” Arianna said to her. “I wonder if the power came from the amulet, or if it came from him.” “Could be a little of both. The amulet could have magnified his own powers, powers that look like they are just starting to manifest themselves.” Arianna said. “Have you found anything out about that amulet yet?” Alaina asked. “No, not yet. But now that I know that Caleb is from Hannah’s line, I have a better place to look.” “Ok, keep looking. I’m going to go to Caleb’s an
Alaina walked into the hotel room, Arianna meeting her at the door. “Were you able to get a look at it?” Arianna asked. “No, I never got the chance. He took me down to the lake. While we were there, he got a message and said he had to go to the hospital. As soon as we got back to his house he went inside and shut the door on me.” Alaina said. “We need to get a look at that amulet. There are too many, from too many different families, that can hold that kind of power. I can’t narrow it down without seeing what it looks like.” she told Alaina. “I will go back and watch for him to get home. After he falls asleep, I will sneak in and find it.” said Alaina. “You will have to be quick. Any ideas where he would keep it?” Arianna asked. “Something tells me he is still wearing it around his neck.” Alaina said and a low growl escaped her. “Really?” Arianna asked. “Yes.” Alaina said. “I need something dark to wear.” she was digging through her back and pulled out a pair of black pants, b
Alaina felt something was off with Caleb, but she just couldn’t put her finger on it. He was giving her a chance to make things right, but there was something nagging at her, telling her something wasn’t right. But she pushed those thoughts to the back of her mind and tried to forget about them. She was just happy that Caleb was at least giving her a chance. He hadn’t forgiven her yet, that much she could see in his eyes, but he was letting her be there, letting her try. Arianna had stayed in the hotel room, she had been trying to see what she could find on that amulet. She had even called Abigail and told her about it as well. They were all concerned about how Caleb came about it. It seemed too much of a coincidence that he just came across it at a sale. Someone wanted him to have it, to use it against them. Caleb didn’t even know what it was, what kind of power it held. But they did. Their mother had been a witch, and even though Alaina was the only one born that possessed her mo
Alaina and Arianna got off the plane in Devils Lake and got a rental car. They decided to get a hotel room first before they went to Caleb’s. “Are you sure I should go to Caleb’s with you? Maybe I should just stay at the hotel.” Arianna asked. “Yes, I am sure. I need you there for moral support.” Alaina said and they both laughed. They got their bags out of the car and went inside the hotel. After they got into their room and put their stuff away, Alaina changed her clothes. And then changed her clothes again. She was nervous and procrastinating. “Stop fidgeting, you look great.” Arianna told her. “I’m nervous, and if I am being honest, I’m scared.” Alaina said. “I know. But don’t worry, I will be right there with you.” Alaina sighed. “Alright, let’s go.” Alaina and Arianna got out of the car and walked towards the house that Alaina got the address for. Alaina took a deep breath and knocked on the door. They waited but nobody came to the door. “Looks like he isn’t ho
Caleb woke up the next morning and he thought for sure that his head was about to split open. He fumbled his way to his bathroom and found some ibuprofen. He turned on the water in the sink and threw a handful of ibuprofen into his mouth and stuck his head down to the faucet and got a mouthful of water and swallowed the pills. He turned off the water and went over to the toilet to relieve himself, trying not to throw up in the process. He washed his hands and went back into the bedroom. He realized that he had left his sliding glass door open. He walked over to the door and was about to close it when he seen the bottle of whiskey still sitting on the outside table. The hell with it, he thought to himself. He picked it up and took a big drink. He shut the door and walked over to his bed and picked up his phone, it was still off. He powered it back on and as soon as it powered up, it started chiming with message after message. Most of them were from Alaina, a few were from Drew and Lar
Caleb climbed off the plane, anger seething through his whole body. He walked through the terminal to baggage claim. He waited until finally baggage started to come through. Getting his bags, he made his way out of the airport and to his truck. He spent the whole plane ride searching for whatever information he could on vampires. He already knew some of what he read were myths based on what Alaina had already told him. But what he needed to know, was how to kill them. He found several different methods, but there was no way of knowing which ones were myths and which ones were true. He couldn’t very well try it out on one. Unless, he thought to himself, he could find a way to weaken one enough to keep it captive until he could figure out how to kill it. The only way he knew how to weaken a vampire was to not let it feed. He was pretty sure that garlic and crosses were myths. Hell, all of this wasn’t going to matter if he couldn’t even find one. He wondered if there were any vampire
Abigail woke up the next morning and checked her phone to see what time it was. She couldn’t believe what she saw. She sat there just staring at her phone, until Nicholas walked in. “Love, what’s wrong?” he asked. “Nothing is wrong, I just checked my phone to see what time it was, and I have a missed call and a message from Alaina.” she said. “I’m just shocked, I can’t believe she called.” “Is everything ok?” “I guess so. Her message just says to call her when I get a chance, she just wants to talk.” Abigail told him. Nicholas smiled. “Call her.” “I will.” She said, still sitting on the bed staring at her phone. She still couldn’t believe it. She figured Arianna would be the first one to reach out. She never thought it would have been Alaina. She dialed Alaina’s number, after a few rings she answered. Abigail listened to her sister break down in tears as she told her what had happened with a human and how Arianna wouldn’t speak to her because of it. Abigail’s heart broke fo
