Abigail ran as fast as she could through the woods, away from the house and away from her sisters. She loved them very much but she was tired of being weighed down by them. She felt bad for feeling that way about them, it wasn’t their fault. But she couldn’t help the way she felt. It was past time to be alone for a while. She thought about going back to the house they have in Scotland, or maybe Ireland. She only brought a small duffle bag with a few clothes. She didn’t have to bring much because all of their houses had clothes and everything they needed. All she needed was her passport, ID, and some cash, all which she had in her purse. She changed her clothes before she left, she didn’t want to attract any unnecessary attention. She had changed her shirt and left on her jeans and put on a dark blue sweater. She thought about when they had been changed, it was the 16th century.
She could remember that fateful night so clearly, she had gone to take a walk and of course that was a bad idea. Her mother had told her not to go by herself but she needed to be alone. She was on her way home and walked through the alley to cut time when she heard footsteps and looked up. He was absolutely gorgeous, and he was staring right at her. She knew she should be scared but she wasn’t, everything in her was screaming at her to run, but she couldn’t move, she didn’t want to move. He walked up to her, his face so close she could feel his breath, she turned her face upwards to look in his eyes as he lowered his mouth to her shoulders. She felt his teeth sink in and felt the burn, she tried to fight him off but he was too strong.
That was when her sisters came walking down the alley looking for her. “Now we know why you wanted to take a walk on your own.” They giggled. He let go of her and walked towards her sisters. She desperately wanted to yell at them to run but she was frozen. She watched him do the same to her sisters as he did to her, then he bit himself on the wrist and put it to each of their mouths and told them to drink. He took them to his house, far away from town and in the woods. After the change was complete, he told them what he was and what they had now become. Vampire. He explained to them what they needed to know to survive in their new life.
He had also told her that when he saw her, he knew he wanted to change her and to keep her as his lover. He had planned on changing only one and he was just going to kill the others but they all looked so much alike he decided he couldn’t waste beauty such as theirs. But still, only she had been his.
Four hundred years it’s been since that night, but still, she thinks about it, and about him. He had left after a couple of years, in his opinion it had just gotten to crowded. He asked Abigail to go with him but she couldn’t leave her sisters. Maybe she would see him again one day. Not likely though, there was no telling where he could be at.
She had arrived at the airport and decided that she would go to Ireland for a while. She loved the scenery there and she loved the house. The plane didn’t take off for another 45 minutes so she had to try to sit and be patient, but it was proving to be difficult. She was ready to be away from here. It’s a good thing she came across that deer when she did or it would be even more difficult to sit here in an airport with all the blood walking around.
They finally started boarding and she took her seat and watched as the plane took off and climbed up in the clouds and across the ocean. Although nobody else could, she could see the dolphins that jumped up out of the water. She watched as the plane crossed over into Ireland. She walked off the plane and went over to the rent-a-car booth and got a car to take her home. She made arrangements to have someone pick the car up in a few days.
She managed to get a Chevy Camaro, it was a convertible, silver with black racing strips. It wasn’t as fast as she would’ve liked, but it was fast enough. The airport was around four hours away from her house. She could make it there in one, although with this car it might take her a little longer. She was going to drop the car off 35 miles from the house and run the rest of the way. She was enjoying the wind on her face and the speed of the car. She had it topped out at 180. She slowed down when the drop off point came into view. She stopped the car and put the top up and locked the keys in the car. Whoever came to pick up the car would have an extra set of keys.
The house was on around a hundred acres of land and it was surrounded by woods and a big pasture for the horses and a barn that was almost as big as the house. The house itself was a three-story, with eight bedrooms, and six bathrooms. The bedrooms were split five on the third floor, three on the second. There is one bathroom on the first floor, two on the second, and three of the bedrooms on the third floor, which belonged to the sisters, had their own master bath. The house also had a library which was on the first floor but they had part of the ceiling cut out so that it would go up to the second floor and it had a spiral staircase to connect the two. They didn’t use the kitchen much but it hadn’t been left out of the renovations.
The living room was huge with big bay windows and was painted a pretty baby blue with white trim and had plush white carpet. Alaina had painted this room herself. She loved the color of the paint as soon as she saw it. Abigail and Arianna hadn’t argued at all, they thought it was perfect as well. Now standing here looking at it, they were right, it is still beautiful.
She could live here for a while, hunt the woods. They have a caretaker for all their houses, to make sure they stayed clean and up-to-date, made sure what animals they had were taken care of. They didn’t have many, just a few horses at a couple of houses. She went upstairs to her room and walked out onto the balcony. The balcony ran across to connect three rooms that were hers and her sisters.
She looked out over the woods and took a breath, it was just so peaceful here. Her favorite house had always been the one she just left, but now it is the one that she’s in. She had always loved this house, but being here, out on this balcony, looking at the view it held, and being alone, it just gave her a sense of peace. She can come and go as she wants without having to argue or convince her sisters of anything, she can just go. And if she decided that she didn’t want to stay here after a month or two, she could just pick up and go to another house.
Hunt, she thought, let's go hunting. She jumped off the balcony and landed on her feet like she had just jumped off a porch step. She ran into the woods and started to sniff out something good. She came across a couple of deer, a few rabbits and squirrels, but nothing really appealing to her. She ran a little longer and came across a worn path. She didn’t recall there ever being a path here, although it’s been around fifty years since they have been here. But even still, this is still their land and there should be no path there.
She followed the path and found that it came to a clearing, from the looks of it a campsite. The coals were still warm from a fire, there was a tent but nobody was in there. A deer was skinned and hung up for the sun to dry it out, meat was lying beside it on a table. She sniffed the air to try and catch a scent of the human that had been staying here. Who would be staying here on our land, she thought to herself.
She heard the footsteps just as she caught the scent. Tall, dark, and lean, he walked into the clearing, a shotgun in his hands ready to shoot. Dark hair with piercing green eyes, he lowered the gun and just stared at her. “Who the hell are you and what are you doing out here lurking around my tent?” he asked her.
She let out a snort of laughter and turned to him, “Who the hell are you and what the hell are you doing camping out on my land?”
His eyes got wide and his jaw dropped, obviously shocked he just stared blankly at her, “Well, are you going to speak or just stand there looking like a dumb ass?”
“Apologies miss, I didn’t realize that you owned this land.”
“But you knew the land was owned?”
“I’ve heard that this land has been owned by the same family for hundreds of years, but I didn’t realize that the land extended so far from the house. Nobody has been here for a while now, I just assumed it wouldn’t matter either way.”
“The land extends for miles even past this point, there is a caretaker that stays a few miles away. He tends to the house and the land, there is never any point in us coming here unless we want to stay for a while.”
“I apologize. I will pack up and move along.” He told her.
Her gaze was fierce, she wasn’t about to just let this meal walk away without some damn good explaining why he was there in the first place. “I’m not through asking questions or getting answers. Why are you living on my land?” He made a move to get past her to the tent but she was faster and blocked his way.
“I have been traveling through Ireland making my way back to England. My horse went lame about a week or two ago and I haven’t found another to take its place as of yet. I was camping until I did, this looked to be the best spot for it.”
“Why in the hell are you traveling on a horse? It’s much easier to drive a car across the country.” She said. He made another move to get past her and once again she blocked him, he looked at her warily, wondering how she could be so beautiful but why this fear was building inside of him. Her eyes, he decided, so fierce like she is something to be feared. Little did he know, she was his worst nightmare should she choose to be. Lucky for him she had decided she wasn’t in the mood to try to take him. He looked like the type that would put up a good fight. Although that intrigued her, she was just too tired.
“I don’t have the money to buy a car. Horses are cheaper. I like horses.”
She shifted just enough so he could slip past her, the smell of him was so enticing that it was really hard to resist the urge she had fighting to break loose inside of her. She watched him take down the tent and put everything into the pack. She wondered if he had any family or friends that would be expecting him, it would be easy enough to seduce him and then feed.
“Do you have any family back in England?” She decided to ask.
“Not really,” he replied.
“Are you going to elaborate on that or am I going to have to keep asking questions?” He stopped packing and looked at her. Her gaze wasn’t as fierce as it had been but now showing signs of exhaustion. “I have family, but I haven’t spoken to any of them in years. Years before I even left England. Is that enough explanation for you?”
She smiled, this one might just be a shame to waste. He has almost enough wit to match her own, it’s been a while that she has come across someone like that other than her sisters. “That will do for now, if it is a horse you are seeking then I will be kind enough to offer you one of mine, for the right price of course.”
“Thank you miss, I don’t think I can apologize enough for being on your land. I will pay you as much as you wish.”
She smirked at him just a little, “Yes, of course, I have something that needs to be done first, I will leave you here to pack up the rest of your camp and I will be back.” Without another word she turned around and disappeared into the trees.
“Get up!!!” Drew barged into Caleb’s room, “Man you have been asleep for over an hour.” Mom said not to wake him but Drew wasn’t going to let Caleb miss dinner. Caleb didn’t even open his eyes “Shut up and go the hell away.” “Okay then” and with that Drew sat on Caleb’s bed and right on top of him. Caleb groaned and tried to get up but Drew was too heavy. “Get your ass off of me and I might be able to get up” he told Drew. Drew just laughed but got off his cousin. He didn’t need to sleep so late anyway, he might miss dinner. Caleb sat up and punched his cousin in the arm, Drew laughed again and stood up, “What is so important that you had to come in here, sit on me and wake me up?” Caleb asked him. Drew gave him a lopsided grin “Dinner.” “I’m up,” he said “I’ll be downstairs in a minute, I just need to wash up.” As Drew left the room and went downstairs Caleb thought about the dream that he was having. It was about the girls that he seen in the woods, he had wondered who th
Alaina woke up and stared at the beige wall that made up her room, she got up and walked over to her window. She had dreamed for the first time in a very long time. She was thinking about the boy, that face and those sorrow filled eyes. She had saved him because she felt sorry for him, now she couldn’t stop thinking about him. Something about his eyes, she thought. She decided sitting here wasn’t going to help get him off her mind. So she decided to go take a run. She loved to run, it helped clear her mind. She passed by the library on her way out and noticed that Arianna was sleeping in the chair. She looked so peaceful she didn’t want to wake her up. She wrote her a note to tell her that she would be back soon and not to worry. She stepped out onto the porch and looked out at the woods.
Scotland 2020 It was another one of those days where all it did was rain. The clouds hung low and dark and promised nothing other than more rain, maybe even a little bit of snow. She would like some snow, Arianna thought to herself. It would be a nice change to the rain. She stared out of her bedroom window, for miles and miles all there was to see was trees and hills. And rain. Frustrated she spun out of her room and down the stairs. She could hear the tv on in the living room. Alaina had to be just as bored as she was. Maybe enough to leave and find another place to live for a while, she was ready to go back to the states. She loved living there and the only reason she left was because Alaina came back from a run one day and was upset saying they needed to leave. She hadn’t tried to argue with her because ever since their older sister had left them there, it just didn’t seem the same. Truth to be told she had been ready to leave as well, she just didn’t want to say anything. A
“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Caleb, happy birthday to you!” His family came into the room with a very large and very unnecessary cake. Caleb sat in the living room trying to catch up on the work the chief of staff had given him for the conference he was going to in Los Angeles. He was a third-year resident at the community’s hospital. He had worked his ass off in college to finish early so he could apply to med school at Yale. And it paid off. He would only be a second year now if he hadn’t.Going to the conference along with him was one other resident and two attendings and they will be gone for a week. This
Alaina was looking out of the hotel window, they have been in New York for only a few days. Neither one of them had spoken or even been out of the room. She was thinking about everything that happened, she almost of understood what Abigail had done. Almost. It was at that point of time that was her favorite time of the day, when the sun was barely in the sky. Pinks, reds, and oranges colored the sky and the clouds. It was at this time when she could think most clearly. She knows that her sister didn’t leave with the intention to be with someone else. And if that had been the case, she would have told them. Perhaps they were too harsh with her. No, over a decade goes by without so much as a phone call or text message. She told herself. And the whole time she has been with him. She moved away from the window and paced back and forth. She might not have intended it, but she could’ve at least made some kind of contact with them the past few years. It’s true that time moves more slowly fo
The next morning, they went out to find a realtor and look for a house. To their disappointment, they didn’t find anything that would suit them. After a few weeks of house hunting, they finally found a house on the beach near Deer Creek Beach. Which was also in the state park. It was perfect for them, although they couldn’t move in right away, they had to wait for the current owners to move out. Finally, after two weeks they got the call that the owners were moved and they could come pick up the keys and start moving in. Leaving the realtors office, keys in hand, they couldn’t be happier. Now they had to go buy furniture to fill their new house, and shopping just made them even happier. After making arrangements to have everything delivered and set up for them, they went back to the hotel to get their stuff and check out. Before they left Santa Monica, they decided to celebrate by going surfing. They had been so busy trying to find a house they hadn’t had the chance to hit the wate
“What are you staying at?”“Ocean View Hotel”She turned onto Ocean Avenue and worked her way through the traffic to the hotel.“Why are you here? What, do you live here now too?” she asked.“No, I do not live here. A few other doctors and I are here for a convention.”
They were able to find a contractor that was able to come out that morning. Going through the house they told him everything they wanted done. Her phone rang, there was no name on the caller ID. She answered the call to find Caleb on the other end.“Alaina. Why did you leave?” he said.“How did you get my number?” she asked him.“I got it out of your phone yesterday when you weren’t looking. Now answer my question. Why did you leave?”&nb
Abigail and Nicholas stepped of the plane in Los Angeles and got a car. She put the address that Alaina sent her into the GPS and headed to the house. She was glad that Alaina was getting Arianna out of Devils Lake but she wasn’t happy that Alaina was going back. But Alaina needed to handle this situation, and if Alaina couldn’t, she would. She won’t take any chances when it came to her sisters. She didn’t want Alaina to go back alone, and her and Nicholas had talked about him staying with Arianna while Abigail goes back with Alaina. That was the only way she could make sure the situation would be taken care of. Nicholas wasn’t happy about it, but he finally gave in and agreed. They pulled up to the house and found that Alaina and Arianna were already there. Nicholas got their bags out of the trunk and followed Abigail in the house. Her sisters were waiting at the door to wrap her in a hug, all of them crying. Abigail hoped to never go this long without seeing her sisters again. Sh
“What the fuck?” Alaina was practically yelling at this point. As soon as she got back to the hotel room Arianna had showed her a picture of the amulet she had found. It was hanging around the neck of the witch that had killed their mother. They knew that witch wasn’t still alive. Alaina and Hannah had seen to that. After she had killed their mother, she disappeared for years. Then one night, while Alaina was visiting Hannah and her new daughter, Sybil tried to attack Hannah, and if Alaina hadn’t of been there, she may have succeeded. But Alaina was there, and her and Hannah killed her. Sybil couldn’t have been the one to give that amulet to Caleb, but it could have been one of her descendants. They weren’t even sure she even had any. But if it wasn’t, then it could have been a friend of Sybil’s looking for revenge. Either way, they had to get that amulet away from Caleb. It was sure to hold a lot of dark magic, since Sybil was one of the biggest practitioners and held the most power
“Arianna, look at this!” Alaina yelled suddenly, making Arianna jump. “What? Oh my.” Arianna said looking at Alaina’s computer screen. Alaina had managed to track down her mother’s friends last living relative. She couldn’t believe it. It was Caleb. “So, Caleb is Hannah’s so many greats grandson.” Arianna said. “Looks that way.” Alaina said. “I wonder if he knows.” “I don’t know. For a split second after that amulet knocked you on your ass, surprised crossed his face. I don’t think he knew what kind of power it held.” Arianna said to her. “I wonder if the power came from the amulet, or if it came from him.” “Could be a little of both. The amulet could have magnified his own powers, powers that look like they are just starting to manifest themselves.” Arianna said. “Have you found anything out about that amulet yet?” Alaina asked. “No, not yet. But now that I know that Caleb is from Hannah’s line, I have a better place to look.” “Ok, keep looking. I’m going to go to Caleb’s an
Alaina walked into the hotel room, Arianna meeting her at the door. “Were you able to get a look at it?” Arianna asked. “No, I never got the chance. He took me down to the lake. While we were there, he got a message and said he had to go to the hospital. As soon as we got back to his house he went inside and shut the door on me.” Alaina said. “We need to get a look at that amulet. There are too many, from too many different families, that can hold that kind of power. I can’t narrow it down without seeing what it looks like.” she told Alaina. “I will go back and watch for him to get home. After he falls asleep, I will sneak in and find it.” said Alaina. “You will have to be quick. Any ideas where he would keep it?” Arianna asked. “Something tells me he is still wearing it around his neck.” Alaina said and a low growl escaped her. “Really?” Arianna asked. “Yes.” Alaina said. “I need something dark to wear.” she was digging through her back and pulled out a pair of black pants, b
Alaina felt something was off with Caleb, but she just couldn’t put her finger on it. He was giving her a chance to make things right, but there was something nagging at her, telling her something wasn’t right. But she pushed those thoughts to the back of her mind and tried to forget about them. She was just happy that Caleb was at least giving her a chance. He hadn’t forgiven her yet, that much she could see in his eyes, but he was letting her be there, letting her try. Arianna had stayed in the hotel room, she had been trying to see what she could find on that amulet. She had even called Abigail and told her about it as well. They were all concerned about how Caleb came about it. It seemed too much of a coincidence that he just came across it at a sale. Someone wanted him to have it, to use it against them. Caleb didn’t even know what it was, what kind of power it held. But they did. Their mother had been a witch, and even though Alaina was the only one born that possessed her mo
Alaina and Arianna got off the plane in Devils Lake and got a rental car. They decided to get a hotel room first before they went to Caleb’s. “Are you sure I should go to Caleb’s with you? Maybe I should just stay at the hotel.” Arianna asked. “Yes, I am sure. I need you there for moral support.” Alaina said and they both laughed. They got their bags out of the car and went inside the hotel. After they got into their room and put their stuff away, Alaina changed her clothes. And then changed her clothes again. She was nervous and procrastinating. “Stop fidgeting, you look great.” Arianna told her. “I’m nervous, and if I am being honest, I’m scared.” Alaina said. “I know. But don’t worry, I will be right there with you.” Alaina sighed. “Alright, let’s go.” Alaina and Arianna got out of the car and walked towards the house that Alaina got the address for. Alaina took a deep breath and knocked on the door. They waited but nobody came to the door. “Looks like he isn’t ho
Caleb woke up the next morning and he thought for sure that his head was about to split open. He fumbled his way to his bathroom and found some ibuprofen. He turned on the water in the sink and threw a handful of ibuprofen into his mouth and stuck his head down to the faucet and got a mouthful of water and swallowed the pills. He turned off the water and went over to the toilet to relieve himself, trying not to throw up in the process. He washed his hands and went back into the bedroom. He realized that he had left his sliding glass door open. He walked over to the door and was about to close it when he seen the bottle of whiskey still sitting on the outside table. The hell with it, he thought to himself. He picked it up and took a big drink. He shut the door and walked over to his bed and picked up his phone, it was still off. He powered it back on and as soon as it powered up, it started chiming with message after message. Most of them were from Alaina, a few were from Drew and Lar
Caleb climbed off the plane, anger seething through his whole body. He walked through the terminal to baggage claim. He waited until finally baggage started to come through. Getting his bags, he made his way out of the airport and to his truck. He spent the whole plane ride searching for whatever information he could on vampires. He already knew some of what he read were myths based on what Alaina had already told him. But what he needed to know, was how to kill them. He found several different methods, but there was no way of knowing which ones were myths and which ones were true. He couldn’t very well try it out on one. Unless, he thought to himself, he could find a way to weaken one enough to keep it captive until he could figure out how to kill it. The only way he knew how to weaken a vampire was to not let it feed. He was pretty sure that garlic and crosses were myths. Hell, all of this wasn’t going to matter if he couldn’t even find one. He wondered if there were any vampire
Abigail woke up the next morning and checked her phone to see what time it was. She couldn’t believe what she saw. She sat there just staring at her phone, until Nicholas walked in. “Love, what’s wrong?” he asked. “Nothing is wrong, I just checked my phone to see what time it was, and I have a missed call and a message from Alaina.” she said. “I’m just shocked, I can’t believe she called.” “Is everything ok?” “I guess so. Her message just says to call her when I get a chance, she just wants to talk.” Abigail told him. Nicholas smiled. “Call her.” “I will.” She said, still sitting on the bed staring at her phone. She still couldn’t believe it. She figured Arianna would be the first one to reach out. She never thought it would have been Alaina. She dialed Alaina’s number, after a few rings she answered. Abigail listened to her sister break down in tears as she told her what had happened with a human and how Arianna wouldn’t speak to her because of it. Abigail’s heart broke fo
