LAYKEN
A knock sounded on my office door, making me cringe. “What is it, Jillian?”
She opened the door and peered inside. “I’m sorry, sir, but your mom just called and wanted me to remind you of the gala tomorrow night. I mentioned it two days ago, but I thought I would bring it up again since you have been so busy this week.”
The pounding headache returned with a vengeance. There was no way I could secure such a last-minute date. My parents would chastise me for showing up without a companion. I needed to see a barber stat, and my tuxedo was at the cleaners. I glanced at my Rolex to see I was now due in court in twenty minutes. Fuck me!
“My apologies in advance, Jillian. But I need your help. If it’s not too much trouble, would you be able to swing by the cleaners and pick up my tuxedo? There’s no way I’ll have the time to make it by there in time before they close.”
I removed my wallet from the desk and displayed the cards I had from the cleaners and barbershop. Then headed towards Jillian. “When you get back to the office, could you contact the barber and set up a time for me to get a haircut tomorrow afternoon? There’s no way I can get all this done on my own. I understand you have a lot going on, but this is urgent.”
Glanced to make sure no one was around and kissed her on the forehead. “Would you be so kind as to do this for me, Jillian?”
“You don’t have to beg, Layken. I’ll take care of these tasks for you.”
“Could you cancel our other appointments for the rest of the day before you go? I’m suffering from a migraine. After court, I’ll come back to get my tux before heading home.”
“I can bring it to the courthouse for you, so you don’t have to make the journey back here.”
“Thank you, Jillian, but no. You’ve done too much for me already. I will compensate you for the time you missed out on for leaving the office early.”
I want to care for Jillian the way she deserves, but something is hindering me from developing a deep bond with her. We are both mutually understand of one another’s feelings. The sex is great, but we have nothing in common. There have been a few occasions when we’ve discussed dating. It would be a pointless effort, though. It’s clear to us both it would be a dead end. Jillian is an amazing woman and deserves more than I could give her, anyway.

“I suggested countless times in the beginning that settling this case out of court would be best. This was such a waste of taxpayers’ money,” I grumbled to myself as I pushed the button to the elevator.
I was relieved when I went to the office to pick up my tuxedo and saw that Jillian had pinned my appointment for the barber to the outside covering. Jillian is a saint for setting my appointment up for three tomorrow. This meant that I’d be able to relax for most of the day.
Drove the thirty-minute route back home to Georgetown, and found myself parked in front of the cafe where Tenley works. My place is about a fifteen minute drive from here. Thoughts of popping in to see Tenley and glimpse Harper were on my mind the whole way here. My migraine recedes when I glance over and see Harper’s vehicle parked next to Tenley’s.
Imagine my surprise when I saw Harper on the hostess’s bench. My heart skipped a few beats before fluttering back to life. It threatened to beat out of my chest as Harper’s mouth dropped open. She made a full recovery, flashing a smile with her gleaming white teeth.
“You’re Layken, correct? Should I get Tenley for you? She has a thirty-minute break and is in the employee’s lounge.”
My name coming from her lips sounds sublime. I can’t help but imagine her shouting my name out in the heat of passion. Damnit, I need to get my shit together. She’s barely even legal.
Coming back to the here and now, I reply, “Yes, Harper, that would be perfect. Thank you.”
“Follow me, and I will get you seated. We aren’t busy right now, so I’m playing hostess and waitress. Would you like the special and a beer, like last night?”
“Yes, but instead of beer, I’ll have a coke. I need to drive myself home afterward.”
Harper offered a smile and said, “Take a seat, and I’ll be back shortly.”
Tenley strutted up with a smirk, her plate of food and her drink in her grasp. “Aw! Two hours wasn’t long enough for your little sister, so you had to come back and hang out with me again. It’s not even four yet. What’s going on?”
“I had a pounding headache. So I told Jillian to cancel the rest of my appointments for the day, and we cut out early.”
“That doesn’t sit well with me, Layken. You need to see a doctor.”
“Hell no. They will put me on medications that would make me feel worse. All I have to do is alter a few aspects of my life.”
“Yeah, like your workload.”
“Tenley,” I warned.
“I know, I know,” she said and went back to eating. “I’m just trying to look out for you. Let’s change the subject. Harper has such a sweet personality. I’m crossing my fingers that she will stay. Judging by the way she spoke this morning, it appears she might. I questioned if she was looking for a temporary place to stay until she got on her feet? She said little, only that she would handle the situation like she usually does, so…”
Harper came over to me with my plate in her hands and placed it in front of me with a smile. “Would you like anything else, Layken?”
“No thank you, Harper. I’m good.” With a cocky grin, I wink and state, “This is just what I needed.” Not the food, but to see her. Being near her has healed my pounding head. She doesn’t need to know this, though.
Her face reddened, and she pivoted around, walking back to the greeter’s seat.
“We have all gone to a first-name basis, it appears. How lovely! You should give it a go. If Harper can make you smile like that more often, I’m on board with whatever.”
“I’m too old for her, like you said last night.”
“Only twelve years. That’s not bad.”
“I turn thirty-one in two weeks.”
“So thirteen years then. It’s a number. Age does not define who we fall in love with.”
“You are getting way ahead of yourself, Tenley.”
“Yeah, whatever you say. When my break ends, Harper will be done with her shift. You ought to have a chat with her.”
Tenley had gone back to her perch at the front of the cafe. Someone had arrived to relieve Harper, so I knew she would be relieved of her duties soon. Taking Tenley’s advice, I sat and waited for Harper to return.
She entered the room with a plate and a drink and went to the same table she occupied the night before. She scanned her phone and started devouring her meal. As I watcher her from afar, an epiphany washed over me. I observed her for a bit and let her get almost done with her meal before I picked up my drink and headed over to her.
“Would you be alright if I came and spent a little time with you?” She yelps in surprise and almost chokes on her food.
She clears her throat and takes a sip of her water. “That would be wonderful. Take a seat,” she says, gesturing towards the space in front of her, smiling.
I smiled as I faced her and took a gulp of my coke. “What have you got planned for your stay here in Georgetown?”
“Not a lot. If I opt to stay, I have to save all the money I make. I’ll need funds for the first and last month’s rent and money to put down for a deposit.”
“Where are you staying for the time being?”
Her grin faded, and she toyed with her food as if she was searching for the right words to say, yet they wouldn’t come out. “I’m staying at the most affordable hotel I could locate. It’s just a short walk away, so I don’t have to spend money on gas.”
I suspected she wasn’t telling the whole truth because I spotted her SUV outside. It was probable that she was living in her car, yet she didn’t want me to know.
“I have a proposition for you. A way we could help each other out. Tenley and I have a gathering to attend tomorrow. It’s a black-tie affair. I need a date for the night, so my parents won’t be on my ass for showing up alone. Tenley could assist you with finding a dress, along with hair and makeup. Though you don’t need the extra touches, you are beautiful just as you are. I would pay you professional escorts’ wages. Is five hundred dollars a fair payment for two hours of your time? Provided you are available, of course.”
Harper’s eyes narrowed, and she advanced towards me. “I’m not a hooker. In fact, I’m a virgin, so I’m not sure what you are getting at, but no, thank you.” She returned to her seat. Then resumed picking at her food, looking uncomfortable.
Upon realizing how creepy my words must have sounded to her, I belted out, “That’s not at all what I meant. I just need a date, that’s all. I would never, uh… There would be no sex, no kisses, or anything. Tenley is going alone, most likely. We can go together. I can introduce you to my parents, and after that you can join Tenley.”
“Five hundred dollars, to just show up as your date, and nothing else.”
“That’s right.”
“What are the steps I need to take? As far as getting with Tenley to prepare for this special occasion and so on?”
“Hang here for a second, and I’ll explain to Tenley what is happening. I’ll be right back.”
“Ok.”
HARPER
I heard the words date, escort, and five hundred dollars come out of Layken’s mouth, and my first thought was that he wanted to pay me to have sex with him. It had that ‘Pretty Woman’ movie vibe going, and yes, I had to defend myself. I was relieved when he had said there would be no sex, and I could hang out with Tenley for the rest of the night.
Although I had made an abundance of tips and Tenley had given me a hundred dollars. I had stayed in my vehicle last night. Needed every penny I earned for a deposit on an apartment. There was no way I would tell Layken I was living in my car. His sympathy is not something I wish to get. I’m bound and determined to do everything on my own.
Five hundred dollars would help me immensely, so now that sex wasn’t a factor, I was all in. Although if I hadn’t made my dad a promise to wait until I was married, I would gladly give myself to Layken. The man does things to my emotions and body I have never had or felt before in my life. Casey was right about what she said about what he would do to my nether regions. My brain goes all fuzzy, and it feels like butterflies are flapping around in my chest. Every cell and nerve within me seems to fizzle and burn with electricity.
I’m off tomorrow and wouldn’t need to be back here for work until ten Sunday, so it would work out perfectly, giving Tenley and me time to get to know each other.
I’m sitting there with a goofy grin on my face when Layken returns. He smiles as he intertwines his fingers together, like he’s holding back from touching me or something. “Tenley will give you her address, and you will meet her there in the morning. She will get you set up with everything that you need, and I will pick you up around six-thirty tomorrow from her place. If that is alright with you?”
“That would be perfect, thank you, Layken.”
His teeth clench beyond the smile showing off his perfect porcelain teeth. “I look forward to spending some time with you tomorrow,” he says, then he grasps my hand and brings it to his mouth, kissing the back of it gently, winking, and walking off.
Layken is the type of man I would marry someday. Tall, dark, handsome, and older. Guys my age are idiots, and from what I’ve learned in my travels, older college guys aren’t any different from high school guys. In fact, they are even more obnoxious. No, thank you. I don’t need a boy; I need a man, and Layken seems to be the perfect fit for me. As long as he doesn’t play daddy and thinks he can run my life, we’ll get along.
LAYKENIt took all the self control I could muster to leave Harper in that booth alone. More than anything I could ever want, I wished I could to stay with her.During the late hours of the night, I laid in bed tossing and turning last night. No matter what I did, sleep wouldn’t come to me. Her dire situation, along with the profound connection I had, firmly planted itself within my subconscious and I couldn’t shake it.Nothing changed once I got to my office earlier this morning, either. I thought being with Jillian could help, but I feel worse than ever. As if I had been unfaithful to Harper somehow. It’s a ridiculous notion to have since we aren’t involved in a relationship. I’ve only just met her and haven’t known her for over twenty-four hours. Maybe I needed to speak to a psychologist. I’m obviously losing my sanity.I’ve never felt this way for any woman. Not proud of my actions, but I have had my fair share of women through the last twelve years of my life. There’s never been
LAYKENI drove around the city for over an hour, scouting out various hotels. Hoping that she was in one of them, safe and sound. When I found her in one, I would gladly go home and leave her alone. She would never have to know I was out looking for her. All I wanted was to have the reassurance that she was safe. But we don’t always get what we hope for. Which was what was happening to me right now after going to one of the last hotels I could think of.I pulled into some covered parking to get a rest from the pounding rain. If I was a homeless person living out of my car, where would I be? I thought repeatedly, then prayed to God to help me out, even if it was just a little. Then it came to me. She had to be at the parks. Or near the lake, and if that were the case, she was indeed in serious trouble.I sent out another plea for God to send me to where she was. Because if he didn’t lead me, I could easily drive around for another hour before I found her. Then it could be too late to r
LAYKENHarper’s eyes pierce into my soul, and I know what is going through her mind. She wants me to kiss her. But if I do, I don’t think I’ll be able to hold myself back from doing more. My whole body aches to hold her, kiss her, taste her, and consume her. I can’t keep myself from picturing her screaming out my name as I bury myself deep inside her. My need for her is comparable to that of needing air to breathe. But dammit, I have got to change my way of doing things. She is an angel. An angel that the likes of me should not corrupt. I’m determined to do what is right by her. Her beauty is beyond anything I had encountered in my life. And I’ve been with countless women. My college days were wild. There’s no doubt in my mind that I have found the love of my life. I always assumed people who talked about love at first sight were full of shit. But Harper has had me reeling from the first moment I saw her. I love her and I hardly know her. She’s a stranger, but it seems as if I’ve kno
HARPERLayken quickly approached me in the kitchen doorway, placing his hand on the small of my back. He then guided me towards his massive dining room table, which made me wonder if his family visited often. I gazed up at him in awe as he pulled out a chair for me and offered his hand to assist me in sitting down. With a gentle gesture, he scooted the chair in for me. My heart skipped a beat as I admired his considerate actions. He’s perfect. With a seemingly telepathic ability, he chuckles, as if he could read my mind, before walking away. “I have a large family, and they often come to visit,” he explains. “I suspect they come to take advantage of the luxurious indoor pool and hot tub I have downstairs. Or maybe they just want to ensure that I haven’t disappeared off the face of the earth. Most likely, they want to make sure I’m still alive.” He shakes his head, chuckling once more, and flips the sandwiches to toast the other sides. “My parents, being doctors, have more free time on
LAYKEN“Could you please give me a few days to think about it, Layken? If it’s alright with Tenley, I would be grateful to crash on her couch for a little while. Honestly, anything is better than spending another night in my car, which I’ve been doing for the past month. Well, I don't have a car to sleep in now, so…”I am attempting to maintain a neutral expression, but I don't understand why Harper is refusing the help I am offering her. This deepens my feelings for her even more. Most women would take advantage of the situation and demand more than necessary. That’s all they seemed to see in me: money and sex. However, this woman standing before me, despite her youth, possesses wisdom and independence that I adore. Harper recognizes her need for my help, and I believe eventually she will accept what I am offering. Of course, I had to be cautious not to overwhelm her with my generosity and potentially scare her off. Losing her and never seeing her again was not an option. I had to en
HARPERAs Layken ran out of the door, an instant feeling of longing washed over me. It’s crazy how I can miss someone I hardly know. It’s as if I’ve known him my entire life, though. Not being able to spend the night with him is something I’m not a fan of. The thought of using his chest as a pillow has even crossed my mind. I entertained the idea of sneaking into his bed after he had fallen asleep. Unfortunately, that plan wouldn’t be happening now. With a deep breath, I packed away my belongings. After a few minutes, Tenley burst into the room, her face streaming with tears. She rushes towards me, embracing me so tightly that it became difficult to breathe. “I’m so relieved you’re alright,” she said. “It’s my fault for not insisting you come to my place, even though you kept objecting, and I feel like such an idiot. I had a feeling the weather would be terrible tonight. I thought you would take my advice and at least stay in a hotel. Harper, I want you to know that I’m not angry at y
HARPERUnable to resist, I glance over at Tenley with a massive grin on my face. “I had the most amazing time shopping I’ve ever had in my life. Thank you so much, Tenley.” “Harper, it’s hard to believe you’ve never been shopping for formal wear before? Didn’t you and your foster mom go prom dress shopping at least?”“Hell no. I didn’t go to prom. The guys at my school were flat-out ignorant. As I mentioned before, I had a no friends. I would have gone and stood there by myself. Sarah, my foster mother, insisted I go anyway, but I couldn’t bring myself to spend that kind of money. I have always been conservative with my money. Most girls dream of going to prom. My parents and I used that money to go to the movies instead.”“Goodness, Harper.” Tenley glances at me in pity, then shakes the thoughts from her mind. “Well, we compensated for that. The gala you will attend tonight can make up for you not going to prom.” She glances over at me, smiling, before putting her attention back on
LAYKEN “Oh my goodness, Layken, you’ve exceeded expectations tonight! Who is this beautiful woman by your side tonight?” mom asked, pulling Harper away from me and embracing her like she’s known her forever. It’s as if everyone in the world recognizes that Harper belongs by my side.“Mom, this is my girlfriend, Harper. Harper, my mom Taryn.”“It’s so nice to meet you, Mrs. Langley,” Harper said with a massive grin on her face.“Harper, please call me Taryn. Mrs. Langley makes me feel so old,” mom says, shaking her head and grinning. “You are so sweet, Harper. I have a good feeling about you. Layken, I will run and find your father and Tambre. I know that both of them would love to meet Harper. Wait here,” she says, before scurrying away.“You said I was your girlfriend,” Harper said, grinning at me.“I hope to make you more than that someday.”“Oh,” she says, taking her bottom lip between her teeth. “So, are we in a relationship now?” she asks, clutching my arm and staring into my ey
LAYKENHaving spent the day walking the bustling city streets, our excitement was palpable. Throughout the day, I kept the ring in my pocket, unsure of when the perfect moment to propose would arise. The timing, however, never seemed quite right. As soon as her bare feet touched the cool water, a captivating transformation took place. A radiant smile graced her face, emanating warmth and peace. Her sparkling gray eyes reflected the full moon’s brilliance, twinkling with a touch of enchantment within them. Several emotions course through me. The tranquil lapping of the water against the shore echoed in my ears, heightening the anticipation. Time seemed to stand still as I realized that the moment had arrived - the perfect moment to slide the ring onto her finger, binding Harper and me together forever. As I reach into my shorts pocket and bring out the ring box, her eyes widen. I can’t help but smile down at her, gazing into her mesmerizing orbs. Her lips stretch into a broad smile spa
HARPERWe stopped at a shed that’s just a few yards away from the stream to gather our fishing poles and a tackle box. “We’re lucky my dad rigged up all the poles. That would take an extensive amount of time we don’t really have. But I’ll take the tackle box with us just in case.” He smiles over at me and points at all the fishing rods that are hanging from hooks on the wall. “The coral colored rod is Tenley’s, if you would like to use hers for now. Or you can use any of the others? All but this one, it’s mine,” he says, grinning as he pulls a black and gray fishing rod from the wall.Chuckling and shaking my head, I reach up and grab a black and green rod from the wall. “Somehow I knew the black and gray one was yours. I’m not surprised in the slightest. Whose pole does this one that I grabbed belong to?”“That pole is my dad’s. Don’t worry. He won’t be upset with you using his fishing pole.” Layken rounds me and pushes me towards the door. When we walk to the side of the shed, I see
LAYKENAlthough I want nothing more than to embrace Harper, undress her, and lose myself in the depths of her being, exhaustion has taken its toll on me. I couldn’t bear the thought of making her first time less than perfect and unforgettable. However, the time for us to ravish each other is rapidly approaching. Harper’s irresistible allure makes it challenging for me to restrain myself. For starting a family, I believe in waiting for a couple of years, if not longer. Harper still has so much life to live as a young adult. Countless adventures await her, and I want nothing but the best for her.“Call me old, but I don’t have the energy to walk, let alone make love to you, sweetie. It’s not that I don’t want to, because, believe me when I say I want to more than anything. We need nourishment before we even think of doing much else. Then I would like to take you to the stream. My brain is getting foggy and eyes are drooping. I’m on the verge of passing out.”Harper’s initial disappointm
LAYKENHarper’s eyes widen in surprise, a flicker of confusion crossing her face. She nuzzles me away, the cool touch of her hand lingering on my arm, as she swiftly makes her way to her closet. The sounds of bags rustling against each other fills the air. Moments later, she returns, the rustling of shopping bags echoing softly in the room. “What are you talking about, Layken?” she asks, her voice tinged with uncertainty. “I’m so confused. I thought we were going to the office.”She deposits all the bags next to me on the bed and blows a strand of hair out of her face. “What all do you have in these bags, Harper?”She blushes, then chuckles as she glances over at Tenley. “Clothes I purchased to take for the trip to Colorado. I haven’t washed them yet, so I hope there is a washer and dryer at the cabin,” Harper says, looking back over at Tenley with an apologetic smile. “Sorry girl, I guess we are leaving even earlier now than what I told you.”“It’s alright, don’t sweat it. I’ve taken
HARPER*Contrary to my expectation of heading straight to the office, Layken surprises me by taking a completely different route. It appears we were going back to Georgetown. I have no clue what his intentions are, but I can’t help but feel excited about the possibilities. The determination on his face as he drives only adds to the anticipation. Perhaps he’s taking me home, where we can finally release the sexual tension that has been building between us for weeks.Smiling over at him, I turn the radio on and place my hand on his thigh. “What’s going on?” He smiles, clutching my hand for a moment before putting his hand back on the steering wheel. “I have a prior engagement that I need to take care of before going to the office. Do you want to go back to your place or mine? It will only take me a few minutes, then I’ll be back to pick you up.”Well, crap, I thought maybe he was going to take us back to his place and have his way with me, but I suppose that would not be happening.“I
HARPERAfter the events with Jillian earlier today, followed by what just happened with Tenley, my nerves were all over the place. I can’t wait for this day to end. The anxiety from my morning appointment with Tambre is only adding to it. It shouldn’t be such a big deal, but because my life hasn’t been normal, I fear getting under birth control. Maybe if things were different, I wouldn’t be so afraid of having my own babies. I would love to have at least one baby with Layken, but I’m not sure if I can handle the stress. My biological mother had an IUD implant when she was eighteen, around the time she met my father. However, when she turned Twenty-One, she had it removed. Unfortunately, the IUD caused her fertility issues, resulting in multiple miscarriages before she finally conceived me. The hormones in the IUD had adverse effects on her health. Although there was no proof that the IUD caused her thyroid issues, she developed thyroid cancer during her pregnancy with me. Sadly, the d
LAYKENMy feet stayed firmly planted outside of Harper and Tenley’s apartment. Paralysis had overcome me, and I couldn’t bring myself to leave. If I could go back inside, swoop Harper off her feet and take her home with me, I would, but I can’t. I want so badly to heave her down on my bed and rip all of her clothes off and bury myself inside her. My desire for a woman has never been so strong. It’s becoming increasingly hard with each day that passes to not ravish her. I couldn’t wait any longer, but I needed to, for Harper’s sake.I rake a hand over my face, groaning in frustration. Taking a deep breath, I reluctantly stride towards my truck; struggling to control the desire to go back to her. I need nourishment and a back-breaking workout to relieve the tension coursing throughout my body. After jumping into my truck, I mindlessly drove into town. When I found myself parked outside of a jewelry store. I couldn’t remember how I had gotten there.‘What the hell is wrong with you?’ I m
HARPERI observed Layken as he made his way back to his office, noting the exhaustion clear in his demeanor. It dawned on me that I shouldn’t have kept him up so late the previous night. Still, I couldn’t help but cherish the serene moments we had shared, cuddling together before what I knew would be a demanding week ahead. Layken had even taken off his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves, looking incredibly attractive. The temptation to heed his invitation and follow him into his office was strong. However, Jillian and I had established a comfortable work zone for ourselves, and I didn’t want to jeopardize that, particularly since I would work under her while Layken was away on his extended vacation. As Layken took a left instead of returning to his desk, a sigh escaped from my lips. I knew exactly what he would do - lie down on his couch. In that moment, I yearned to be by his side. Feeling a pulsing ache from deep within, I tightly crossed my legs, attempting to quell the desire
LAYKENEver since Harper started working here three weeks ago, I have attempted to keep my office door open at all times. Before her arrival, it was most always closed. I simply didn’t care to see what was happening beyond the walls of my sanctuary, if you can call it that. My office used to feel more like a prison, but things have changed. Nowadays, I leave my door open, unless Jillian, our legal assistants Jacob and Sasha, and I have clients here. Harper’s desk and work area are directly across from my office, and I find great joy in observing her work. Thanks to her presence, I have never felt so relaxed in the workplace.Hiring Harper was the best thing that could have happened to this firm. She is the most exceptional secretary I have ever worked with, and I say this because it’s the truth, not because she is my soulmate. Jillian and anyone else working here at the firm can attest to that. Her diligence and fantastic work ethic are loved by everyone. In fact, the other partners i
