CATHERINE
I couldn’t stop pacing. This was madness. I didn’t belong here, certainly not in this dress, and I definitely didn’t belong to him.
“This is insane!” I snapped, twisting my fingers through the fabric of the ceremonial gown as Mia tried to pull it tighter around my waist. “I don’t even know him! How can I be forced into this?”
Mia’s eyes showed sympathy as she tied the last ribbon, securing the dress around me.
“I know, Catherine,” she whispered as she adjusted the collar. “But the King, his orders are absolute. There’s no escaping this.”
“I’m not a prisoner!” I bit back loudly. “I don’t want to be mated to him! I can feel my real mate out there somewhere.” I pressed a hand to my chest, where a strange warmth pulsed.
I had felt it faintly for as long as I could remember, the presence of my wolf, trapped in silence. She was there, but distant, her voice always muffled, as if something held her back.
But that didn’t mean I belonged to Kane.
Durmas, the priest, entered the room then, his robe dragging against the floor like the whisper of death. I stiffened at his presence, hating how his cold gaze made me feel even smaller, like nothing more than a lamb being led to slaughter.
“Is she ready?” Durmas asked Mia, not even bothering to look at me. His tone was brisk, disinterested, as though I were just another chore to check off his list.
“No, I am not ready,” I spat, pushing away from Mia’s gentle hands. “I don’t want to be mated to your king. I’m not some piece of property to be traded off.”
Durmas finally turned to me, his eyes hard and unyielding.
“You don’t have a choice, girl,” he said coolly. “The mating ritual will bind you to King Kane. You’re fortunate. Most would kill for the position you’re in.”
“Fortunate?” I laughed bitterly. “To be forced into this against my will? I don’t even know him!”
“And yet,” Durmas replied with a sickening calm, “you will be his before the night is over.”
My hands shook with anger, but there was something deeper, too. Fear. Not just of Kane, but of what he could do to me, to my mind, my body.
What if he wasn’t just cruel, but dangerous? I could feel the raw power radiating off of him every time he was near, and it made my skin crawl.
“I know I have a mate,” I said through gritted teeth, staring Durmas down. “I can feel my wolf. She’s there, waiting for him.”
Mia’s hand rested gently on my shoulder, her fingers offering the smallest bit of comfort.
“Catherine, I believe you,” she whispered. “But we’re in the Lycan King’s court now. You have to survive, whatever it takes.”
I wanted to scream, to tear the gown off and run as far from this castle as possible. But I couldn’t. Kane would find me. The monster would track me down.
Durmas took a step closer, his cold, calculating gaze locking onto mine.
“Your wolf may be silent, but that doesn’t change your fate. The King has chosen you. The ritual will be performed before sundown, and there is nothing you can do to stop it.”
My heart pounded in my chest. I had to stop this. I wasn’t some voiceless object to be passed around. I had to fight back. But how? How could I fight a man as powerful as Kane?
Mia leaned in, whispering so low that only I could hear.
“Catherine, please… just do what they say, for now. You have to live through this first.”
Live through this. Was that all I could hope for? Just to survive?
My vision blurred with angry tears, but I blinked them back. No. I couldn’t let them see my fear. I would face this, I would endure, but I would not be broken. Not by Kane. Not by anyone.
“Fine,” I hissed through clenched teeth. “I’ll go through with your ritual. But don’t think for one second that I will ever accept him as my mate.”
Durmas smirked, clearly unaffected by my defiance. “We’ll see, girl. We’ll see.”
Mia squeezed my hand as Durmas left. “I’m so sorry, Catherine.”
I swallowed hard, my throat tight with emotion. “So am I, Mia. So am I.”
But I wouldn’t let Kane have me. Not truly.
I hadn’t even recovered from Durmas’s cold words before he stepped forward again, his eyes scanning my face like he was studying me.
“Catherine Lionheart,” he began, “I understand your anger. Truly, I do. But I urgent you to give the Lycan King a chance.”
I froze, my fingers still tangled in the fabric of my gown.
“A chance? After everything that’s happened, you want me to give him a chance?”
Durmas nodded. “Things are not always as they seem,” he said quietly. “You may believe you are trapped, but there are ways forward. Kane is not... what the rumors make him out to be.”
A bitter laugh escaped my throat. “He’s a feral monster who murders people. How could anyone see him as anything else?”
“You know nothing of his burden,” Durmas said sharply, but his voice softened again as he continued. “Well...he seeks an heir to secure the future of his lineage. That is his only goal. You provide him with that, and you’ll be free. You could leave, start anew, away from the castle, away from him.”
His words felt like ice trickling down my spine.
“So, I’m just supposed to what? Give him a child and then walk away like it never happened?” My heart pounded in my chest and my pulse rose with each word. “Is that what you’re suggesting?”
“If you bear him an heir, he will have no reason to keep you here,” Durmas said simply. “It is what you want, isn’t it? Freedom?”
My breath caught in my throat. It was a tempting thought, the idea of escape, of a life far from this nightmare. But it felt wrong.
I wasn’t a tool to be used, to be discarded the moment I served my purpose.
“That’s not what I want,” I whispered. “I want control over my own life. I want to be with my true mate, whoever he is.”
Durmas raised a brow. “Your wolf hasn’t spoken to you, has she? You’ve felt her presence but not her voice.”
I blinked, taken aback by his sudden change of subject. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“Everything,” he said quietly. “You can’t be sure your true mate is out there if your wolf is silent.”
“That doesn’t matter! I won’t be reduced to breeding for some king I don’t even know!”
Durmas sighed, a slow, tired sound.
“Think about what I’ve said, Catherine Lionheart. Kane needs an heir. That’s all. Once you provide it, you can have your freedom. It’s something to consider...”
I shook my head, biting back the fury rising inside me.
“I’m not doing this. I won’t be forced into this twisted bargain.”
But Durmas only looked at me, his eyes calm, almost pitying. “Just think about it.”
CATHERINE My gown felt heavier than ever as I walked down the long corridor with a long row of maids trailing behind me.Nothing could prepare me for what awaited me in Kane’s chambers.I didn’t want to do this. Every fiber of my being screamed for me to run, to turn back and somehow escape this fate. But I kept moving forward. More like I didn't have a choice here. Finally, we stopped. The doors to his chambers stood right before me, dark and uninviting. One of the maids stepped forward, her hands trembling as she pushed them open.“Luna,” she whispered as her eyes darted between me and the room. “The king awaits your presence.”My stomach churned as I stepped inside, the door creaking shut behind me. Kane sat at the far end of the room, waiting like the maid had said. A long table stretched between us, covered in luxurious fabrics and filled with dishes I couldn’t even begin to recognize. But all I saw was him, Kane, the Lycan King.He was impossibly large with his wavy brown hair
KANEOh my! Her lips were softer than I imagined. Damn! Her taste alone was intoxicating. I could feel her resistance slowly melting by me as her body yielded to the pull between us. My hands slid to the back of her neck, drawing her closer, deepening the kiss.Catherine’s breath came in shallow gasps, and I felt her fingers tighten in my shirt as if she was torn between pulling me closer and pushing me away. I moved my lips to her neck, trailing slow, deliberate kisses down her throat. She shivered under my touch. In fact, her pulse quickened beneath my lips.“Kane...” she whispered in a shaky tone. There was no need to tell me. It was obvious that she was torn between the anger she had tried to hold onto and the desire she couldn’t suppress at that moment.I smirked against her skin, knowing I had shattered her defenses, at least for the moment. “Do you still think you won’t respond to me?” I murmured, brushing my lips over her collarbone. Her breath hitched, but instead of answe
KANEI was really angry and soon began to feel antsy, kudos to the beast. Every ounce of control I had left was burning away and I tore at the curtains in the room, ripping the fabric from its rods with a furious growl. The cloth fell around me in shreds, but it wasn’t enough. Nothing would be enough to quell this anger. My mother’s interference. Catherine being pulled from me. Everything was spinning out of control. My muscles tensed and my beast clawed at the surface, desperate to be unleashed.I clenched my fists, trembling as the urge to let go overwhelmed me. The beast wanted blood, wanted destruction, and I was close to giving in. My breaths came out in harsh growls as I stormed around the room with my fists aching to hit something or someone. Then I saw it.Her shawl. It had slipped from her shoulders during our kiss and now lying discarded on the floor. Without thinking, I reached down and grabbed it, my hands trembling as I lifted it to my face. Her scent. Sweet, soft and
CATHERINE Damon stood by the door, unmoving, like a shadow cast in the dim light of the corridor. His arms were crossed over his chest and eyes were narrowed as he stared at the floor. I didn’t care for whatever mood he was in, not after the day I had. I heaved a sigh and made to walk past him, determined to ignore whatever drama he was about to start."Are you okay?" His gruff voice broke the silence.I froze for a moment, then shook my head and continued toward the door. "It's none of your business."He stepped in front of me, blocking my path. "I'm not asking for pleasantries. I want to know if you're unhurt."I shot him a cold look, my patience running thin. "And why would you care? Do you usually stand guard for the women your King drags into his chambers?"His jaw tightened. "If you’re trying to provoke me, it’s not going to work." I scoffed, stepping closer, not backing down. "Then stop pretending you care. I can handle myself.""Handle yourself?" he muttered under his bre
CATHERINEThe next morning, I woke to the sound of soft knocking on my door. The nightmare from last night still clung to my mind, but I pushed it aside as Zelda entered my room with a bright smile.“Good morning, darling,” she said warmly, gesturing for me to rise. “It’s time I show you around the castle. You should get familiar with your new home.”I forced a smile and nodded, though the thought of calling this place “home” unsettled me. There was something off here, something I couldn’t quite place. Zelda led me through the long, ornate hallways, pointing out rooms, introducing me to the staff. The castle was larger than I’d imagined. The workers and maids she introduced me to bowed low, their faces carefully neutral.“This is your future Queen Luna,” Zelda announced proudly at every introduction, her hand resting lightly on my back. “You’ll show her the respect she deserves.”Some nodded, others mumbled greetings under their breath, but many simply averted their eyes, too afraid
KANEI stood in the shadows, watching as Catherine sat with my mother. I watched how her delicate fingers scribbled something on parchment. They were outside in the garden, surrounded by vibrant flowers. My mate was here, just within reach, yet something gnawed at me. A primal need to claim her, to keep her close, warred with the fear that I could destroy her.I clenched my fists, willing myself to stay calm. My mother’s voice floated over to me, cheerful and full of excitement as she guided Catherine through the process of sending invitations to dignitaries across the realm. Invitations for a mating ceremony she really wanted to happen.Catherine’s head was bent over her work and the sunlight shined on her golden hair in such a way that it took my breath away. She was so beautiful, so fragile. And yet, here she was, preparing for a ceremony as if everything between us was settled. As if she wasn’t trapped in this.Unable to stay back any longer, I strode toward them, to join in wha
CATHERINE Zelda gave me a sharp look and her smile was tinged with something different too. That look didn't pass me by obviously.“You have to understand, my dear. Kane has lost others before you.”The words struck me, and I froze. "Lost? What do you mean, 'lost as in they died'? They're gone?"She waved a hand dismissively."It's nothing you need to concern yourself with. What I'll just say is that he’s just being cautious now. Afraid, even.""Afraid of what, exactly?" I pressed, not letting her brush it off.Zelda’s lips tightened, and for a moment, I saw a flicker of something in her eyes, a glimpse of darkness that she quickly masked. “Catherine, my dear, it would do you well to focus on the present, not dig up the past.”“But if this is going to affect my life, I deserve to know,” I argued. She smiled coldly. “Life is full of risks. You married a man like Kane; you must have known that when you agreed to it.” She paused, studying me."Well, if my memory serves me right? I did
CATHERINE Walking back to my room, my fingers brushed over the crumpled note in my pocket. “It’s not too late to run.” The words sat heavy on my mind, making me all the more nervous. When I stepped inside, Mia was already waiting for my evening clean up. Her hands were folded neatly and she had a soft, worried look clouding her gaze.Without a word, she led me toward the wash basin and her hands were gentle as she started to undo the pins in my hair. I kept silent for a moment, letting her work. The only sound in the room was the soft splash of water. Then I decided to ask her about Kane."Mia," I began carefully, watching her expression in the mirror, "has he had other mates before me?""By 'he', who do you mean, my lady?""I meant Kane. Did he have other mates before me?"Her hands stilled, just for a heartbeat. I felt the slight tremor in her fingers before she resumed what she was doing with a blank expression on her face. “My lady, you should be resting. Tonight has been t
KANECatherine had finally fallen asleep, her chest heaving as she breathed in slumber. I could feel her worry radiating off her even as she slept with the way she clung so tightly to me. Gently, I shifted her in my arms and laid her down on the couch. I smoothed a strand of hair from her face, leaned down, and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. She might not know it, but I understood her well enough even if she tried her best not to show her worry deeply. She tried masking it not wanting to burden me. I knew her that well at least."Sleep well," I whispered. She stirred for a moment but didn’t wake.Straightening up, I made my way to the door, pausing only briefly to glance back at her peaceful, albeit tear-streaked face. The sight made my chest tighten, but I forced myself to step outside, closing the door quietly behind me. Camille was already waiting. I had nudged her earlier informing her to let us talk outside before laying Catherine off my chest."What’s the plan?" she asked
CATHERINE Back in the house, Kane paced back and forth, his heavy footsteps echoing against the hardwood floors. His brows were furrowed, as he was thinking. Each time he turned, frustration radiated off him in waves. We had made sure nobody left the camp after the incident, not even Davina and her team."Damn it," Kane muttered under his breath, filled with anguish. "I can’t just stand here while those kids... while more people suffer because of me."I sat at the edge of the couch, thinking too. Camille perched beside me, her gaze bouncing between Kane and me. I knew she was struggling to piece together what she’d just learned since she had no idea how Kane's relationship with Zelda was or who Esme really was. Finally, Camille broke the silence cautiously. "Catherine, explain this to me again. From the beginning. I need to understand what’s really happening here."I drew in a deep breath before diving into details. "Esme isn’t who we thought she was. She’s one of Zelda’s pawns, sen
CATHERINE “Esme,” I muttered. I didn't even know when the word left my lips. She was one of Zelda’s closest allies, a woman Kane and I both knew too well. Well, Kane knew her more than I did. I only got the chance to know her because of the mating ceremony which was of course, ruined.Seeing Davina’s face change into Esme’s was like being struck by lightning. My legs felt weak, and for a moment, I thought I’d collapse. The world spun as I struggled to reconcile the two faces. How could this have happened?Camille’s voice broke through my haze of disbelief. “Catherine, what’s going on? Do you know her?”I turned to my sister, my voice shaky. “She’s… she’s Esme. Zelda’s friend. I saw her when I was preparing for the mating ceremony with Kane. She was there. I… I can’t believe this.”Esme’s sly smile only added to the knot of unease in my chest. I pointed a trembling finger at her. “What are you doing here? What is the meaning of this?”Esme’s lips curled into a sly smile. “Delivering
KANEThe scent my beast picked up wasn't just a normal odouror something. It was a feeling. But I didn't have the chance to decipher what it was. Fear? Intimidation? I wasn't sure. But it was a very good feat for me nevertheless. It led me to someone because as soon as it disappeared, it returned. My wolf prowled close to the surface, growling with anticipation, urging me to act, to find the truth buried in the fear-stricken crowd. I could feel the lies hanging in the air, the deceit woven among these so-called helpers. And I so much would tear it out, root and stem, no matter the cost.“Bring them forward,” I barked thunderously, pointing to some of the people ahead. If they weren't going to talk willingly, I might as well try another method. The men I gave the orders to dragged the first suspect into the center of the clearing. It was a young medic, pale and trembling, his glasses askew on his nose. I paced in front of him like a predator.“Name,” I demanded.“D-David, sir,” the ma
KANEThe camp was buzzing with intense activity as everyone scrambled from one place to another, trying to help the other children. I stood at the center, thinking, calculating, observing what everyone was doing. What if this whole thing they were all doing was just a facade and would probably just lead to more death? What if Zelda's minion did his job already and left? So many what ifs crossed my mind incessantly. At this point, I couldn't help but howl, a loud guttural one that evhoed through the air, demanding attention. Everyone froze, and their hands stilled, their eyes snapping to me as I stood tall, coldly glancing at them. Whatever it was, I have to figure it out.I turned to six strong men I trusted since we worked together all along. “I want every new person in this camp, everyone who wasn’t here before the outbreak, out in the clearing. Now.”The men hesitated for a beat, exchanging uneasy glances. One of them, a wiry man with greying hair, dared to ask, “Even the doctors
AUTHOR'S POVAfter hours of treating the children and stabilizing their symptoms, one of Davina’s team members, a scientist named Dr. Elena, approached her, holding a clipboard in one hand and a phone in the other. She was the one Davina said she would reach out to earlier."I’ve analyzed the samples," Dr. Elena said briskly showing the clipboard to Davina. "It’s not smallpox, though it mimics it in many ways. It’s a viral strain, an offshoot of the Orthopoxvirus family."Davina frowned. "What does that mean? How is it similar but not the same?"Dr. Elena adjusted her glasses, explaining further. "The virus shares genetic markers with smallpox but has mutated in a way that makes it less deadly and more treatable. Its symptoms are similar, fever, rash, and fatigue. But the pustules it forms are superficial. They don’t penetrate the skin deeply like smallpox does. Technically, it’s an engineered virus, possibly accidental, but it’s much weaker."Davina narrowed her eyes. "Engineered? Me
CATHERINE Things began returning to normal little by little as Davina sprang into action. She gave out instructions to the parents and volunteers who were hovering helplessly around the tent."I need everyone to leave this tent immediately," she announced strictly in a way that left the parents no choice but to obey. "If you are not directly assisting, you’re only adding to the confusion. Parents, please step outside and wait. I will provide updates as soon as I can."Reluctantly, the parents began to move out of the tents, with worry and tear-streaked faces. A few resisted at first, clinging to their sick children, but Kane’s intervention at the entrance helped to expedite the process. He stood there like a sentry glancing at them all intimidatingly. If there was anything about Kane that scares me, it was how his looks commands things. Just one look and things were already where he wanted them or how he wanted them to be without him evening snapping his fingers sometimes.Once the s
CATHERINE The car door swung open, and a young lady, assumed to be Davina stepped out. She was a striking woman in her late thirties, with jet-black hair that fell in soft waves around her shoulders. Her almond-shaped eyes, scanned her surroundings before they landed on the old woman who was outside already. She was dressed in practical yet stylish clothing, a fitted blazer over a patterned blouse, paired with dark jeans. One other thing, she carried herself with an air of quiet authority. That couldn't go unnoticed."Mara!" she exclaimed and hurried up the steps, pulling the old woman into a firm hug. "It’s been too long. How have you been? And why are you looking so stressed? I thought we talked about this!"Mara chuckled softly, patting Davina’s back. "Oh, Davina, you know me. Stubborn as always. But I’m managing just fine. You, on the other hand, look like you’ve been working yourself to the bone again. When will you learn to take a break?"Davina pulled back slightly, her eyes
CATHERINEThe old woman gestured for us to take a seat as she also say onto the worn wooden bench outside her modest home. She exhaled slowly, rubbing her lower back before speaking to us once again.“Like I said, you guys are lucky,” she began. “There’s a doctor named Davina coming into town today.”My heart lifted slightly, though I caught the wary glint in Kane’s eyes as he leaned forward. His imposing frame cast a long shadow over the woman.“What’s she coming to town for?” he asked, suspiciously. The old woman looked at him, unbothered by his intimidating demeanor. “She’s here for her usual round. I’m diabetic, you see, and she checks up on me every few months. A kind soul, that one. Always makes sure I’m doing all right.”Camille clasped her hands together, her face lighting up with relief. “Thank heavens! That’s exactly what we need right now. Thank you so much for telling us, ma’am.”But the woman held up her hand, stopping Camille mid-celebration. “Hold on, young lady. Davin
