KANE
Oh my! Her lips were softer than I imagined. Damn! Her taste alone was intoxicating. I could feel her resistance slowly melting by me as her body yielded to the pull between us.
My hands slid to the back of her neck, drawing her closer, deepening the kiss.
Catherine’s breath came in shallow gasps, and I felt her fingers tighten in my shirt as if she was torn between pulling me closer and pushing me away.
I moved my lips to her neck, trailing slow, deliberate kisses down her throat. She shivered under my touch. In fact, her pulse quickened beneath my lips.
“Kane...” she whispered in a shaky tone.
There was no need to tell me. It was obvious that she was torn between the anger she had tried to hold onto and the desire she couldn’t suppress at that moment.
I smirked against her skin, knowing I had shattered her defenses, at least for the moment.
“Do you still think you won’t respond to me?” I murmured, brushing my lips over her collarbone.
Her breath hitched, but instead of answering, she sighed and her fingers loosened their grip on my shirt as her body melted fully against mine.
Something slipped from her shoulders, but I couldn't care less. I pulled her tighter and I captured her mouth again, hungrier this time.
She responded to my every touch.
Goodness, she responded. Her lips moved against mine with a fervor I hadn’t expected, and the heat between us ignited into something dangerous, something that pushed me toward the edge of control.
Catherine’s hands slid up to my shoulders and her fingers dug into my skin as if she wanted to anchor herself in the storm we’d created.
I could feel the beast stirring inside me, clawing at the surface, desperate to take more, to claim her fully. But I held back with everything in me. I didn't want to scare her off now.
“Kane…” she gasped again as I nipped at the sensitive skin below her ear. She arched her body into mine, letting her guard completely down now.
I didn’t want to stop. I couldn’t stop.
But just as I was about to pull her even closer, the doors to my chambers burst open with a loud crash.
I froze, and Catherine jerked back, startled, her wide eyes snapping to the doorway. The air around us suddenly felt cold now.
“Kane,” a familiar, icy voice called from the entrance.
My blood ran cold, and I released Catherine instantly, turning to face the woman who stood in the doorway.
My mother.
Zelda’s gaze swept over the room, her lips curling into a sly knowing smile as she stared at us both, Catherine’s flushed face and the disheveled state of my shirt. She raised an eyebrow Asher eyes glinted.
“Well,” she drawled, stepping further into the room, “I see I’ve come at a rather… inconvenient time.”
A low growl escaped my throat as I glared at my mother.
“What are you doing here, Mother?” I demanded, barely containing the snarl that wanted to rip free. “You left years ago to travel the realm. Why do you have to return now?”
Zelda’s smile was unfazed by my anger. It was as if she had expected this reaction.
Instead, she stepped closer, her eyes gleaming with amusement and something darker, something I had long learned to distrust.
“Oh, darling, is that any way to greet your mother after all these years?” She glanced toward Catherine. “Well...I was in town coincidentally and heard about you finally taking a bride.”
Her eyes flicked over to startled Catherine, who was still adjusting her gown as if trying to recover from our moment. My teeth ground together, feeling the crazy urgent to draw her into my arms right away again.
This was not how tonight was supposed to go.
Before I could stop her, Zelda crossed the room in a sweep of elegance, her arms opening toward Catherine.
“My dear,” she cooed, embracing her warmly, much to my disgust. “I’m so sorry you had to deal with this brute of a son all on your own.”
Catherine blinked, clearly caught off guard. But she didn’t pull away. I could see her stiffen, uncomfortable in my mother’s embrace, but the force of Zelda’s charm was undeniable.
Zelda pulled back just enough to study Catherine’s face, her hands gently cupping her cheeks.
“You’re absolutely stunning,” she murmured, more of her passing a comment. “And I must apologize for Kane’s lack of manners. A proper mating ceremony, a formal introduction to the pack, that’s what you deserve. Not, this.”
My fists clenched at my sides. I knew exactly what she was doing. She was no doubt trying to sabotage this moment. It was a game to her. It had always been.
Right then, I could see the calculating glint in her eyes as she acted her role of the kind and doting mother.
Catherine looked conflicted and glanced at me before turning back to Zelda.
“I don’t need anything formal,” she said hesitantly.
Zelda shook her head dismissively.
“That’s nonsense,” she insisted. “Kane has always been impulsive, but this is no way to start a bond as sacred as yours. You deserve better, darling.”
I took a step forward. “Mother,” I growled as the beast within me stirred dangerously. “This isn’t your place. Leave.”
But she ignored me. Her attention was fully on Catherine.
“Come, dear,” she said softly, taking Catherine’s arm. “I’ll have my maids prepare a proper introduction ceremony for you, one befitting your status. You shouldn’t have to rush into things like this.”
“Mother,” I snarled, but she waved me off as if I were nothing more than a troublesome child.
To my utter frustration, Catherine allowed herself to be led away after casting one last conflicted glance over her shoulder as Zelda whisked her from the room.
The doors slammed shut behind them, and everywhere became silent.
The growl building in my chest erupted as I punched the nearest wall with my knuckles cracking against the stone. The beast within me roared, pushing me toward the edge.
I had her. She was mine, and now my mother of all people had torn her from my grasp.
“Damn it!” I hissed.
KANEI was really angry and soon began to feel antsy, kudos to the beast. Every ounce of control I had left was burning away and I tore at the curtains in the room, ripping the fabric from its rods with a furious growl. The cloth fell around me in shreds, but it wasn’t enough. Nothing would be enough to quell this anger. My mother’s interference. Catherine being pulled from me. Everything was spinning out of control. My muscles tensed and my beast clawed at the surface, desperate to be unleashed.I clenched my fists, trembling as the urge to let go overwhelmed me. The beast wanted blood, wanted destruction, and I was close to giving in. My breaths came out in harsh growls as I stormed around the room with my fists aching to hit something or someone. Then I saw it.Her shawl. It had slipped from her shoulders during our kiss and now lying discarded on the floor. Without thinking, I reached down and grabbed it, my hands trembling as I lifted it to my face. Her scent. Sweet, soft and
CATHERINE Damon stood by the door, unmoving, like a shadow cast in the dim light of the corridor. His arms were crossed over his chest and eyes were narrowed as he stared at the floor. I didn’t care for whatever mood he was in, not after the day I had. I heaved a sigh and made to walk past him, determined to ignore whatever drama he was about to start."Are you okay?" His gruff voice broke the silence.I froze for a moment, then shook my head and continued toward the door. "It's none of your business."He stepped in front of me, blocking my path. "I'm not asking for pleasantries. I want to know if you're unhurt."I shot him a cold look, my patience running thin. "And why would you care? Do you usually stand guard for the women your King drags into his chambers?"His jaw tightened. "If you’re trying to provoke me, it’s not going to work." I scoffed, stepping closer, not backing down. "Then stop pretending you care. I can handle myself.""Handle yourself?" he muttered under his bre
CATHERINEThe next morning, I woke to the sound of soft knocking on my door. The nightmare from last night still clung to my mind, but I pushed it aside as Zelda entered my room with a bright smile.“Good morning, darling,” she said warmly, gesturing for me to rise. “It’s time I show you around the castle. You should get familiar with your new home.”I forced a smile and nodded, though the thought of calling this place “home” unsettled me. There was something off here, something I couldn’t quite place. Zelda led me through the long, ornate hallways, pointing out rooms, introducing me to the staff. The castle was larger than I’d imagined. The workers and maids she introduced me to bowed low, their faces carefully neutral.“This is your future Queen Luna,” Zelda announced proudly at every introduction, her hand resting lightly on my back. “You’ll show her the respect she deserves.”Some nodded, others mumbled greetings under their breath, but many simply averted their eyes, too afraid
KANEI stood in the shadows, watching as Catherine sat with my mother. I watched how her delicate fingers scribbled something on parchment. They were outside in the garden, surrounded by vibrant flowers. My mate was here, just within reach, yet something gnawed at me. A primal need to claim her, to keep her close, warred with the fear that I could destroy her.I clenched my fists, willing myself to stay calm. My mother’s voice floated over to me, cheerful and full of excitement as she guided Catherine through the process of sending invitations to dignitaries across the realm. Invitations for a mating ceremony she really wanted to happen.Catherine’s head was bent over her work and the sunlight shined on her golden hair in such a way that it took my breath away. She was so beautiful, so fragile. And yet, here she was, preparing for a ceremony as if everything between us was settled. As if she wasn’t trapped in this.Unable to stay back any longer, I strode toward them, to join in wha
CATHERINE Zelda gave me a sharp look and her smile was tinged with something different too. That look didn't pass me by obviously.“You have to understand, my dear. Kane has lost others before you.”The words struck me, and I froze. "Lost? What do you mean, 'lost as in they died'? They're gone?"She waved a hand dismissively."It's nothing you need to concern yourself with. What I'll just say is that he’s just being cautious now. Afraid, even.""Afraid of what, exactly?" I pressed, not letting her brush it off.Zelda’s lips tightened, and for a moment, I saw a flicker of something in her eyes, a glimpse of darkness that she quickly masked. “Catherine, my dear, it would do you well to focus on the present, not dig up the past.”“But if this is going to affect my life, I deserve to know,” I argued. She smiled coldly. “Life is full of risks. You married a man like Kane; you must have known that when you agreed to it.” She paused, studying me."Well, if my memory serves me right? I did
CATHERINE Walking back to my room, my fingers brushed over the crumpled note in my pocket. “It’s not too late to run.” The words sat heavy on my mind, making me all the more nervous. When I stepped inside, Mia was already waiting for my evening clean up. Her hands were folded neatly and she had a soft, worried look clouding her gaze.Without a word, she led me toward the wash basin and her hands were gentle as she started to undo the pins in my hair. I kept silent for a moment, letting her work. The only sound in the room was the soft splash of water. Then I decided to ask her about Kane."Mia," I began carefully, watching her expression in the mirror, "has he had other mates before me?""By 'he', who do you mean, my lady?""I meant Kane. Did he have other mates before me?"Her hands stilled, just for a heartbeat. I felt the slight tremor in her fingers before she resumed what she was doing with a blank expression on her face. “My lady, you should be resting. Tonight has been t
KANEThe hallway leading to her chambers seemed longer than usual. The night had grown colder, the kind of chill that seeps into your bones and leaves you restless, unwilling to stay still. I tried to reason with myself, to avoid this impulsive decision, but the thought of Catherine alone was enough to set my nerves alight. When I reached her door, I hesitated. She had enough reason to keep me at arm's length, and perhaps knocking on her door at this hour wouldn’t help. With a clenched jaw, I raised my fist and tapped on the door, softly at first, then with more force when there was no answer.Silence.I tried again, waiting, but still, nothing. Anxiety filled my chest, and before I could stop myself, I pushed the door open, stepping inside. Her scent engulfed me immediately. It was woven into the air, clinging to the fabric of her blankets, curling around every corner of the room. I closed my eyes, breathing it in, feeling the beast within me settle, growling in reluctant contentm
CATHERINE“So, what’s your plan, Catherine? Do you intend to stay here with him?” Damon’s voice was a whisper in the stillness as he turned to me.I took a step back, surprised by the question. “Why would you ask that?” I managed to voice out. “Whatever I decide isn’t any of your business, Damon.”His jaw tightened, and for a moment, I thought he’d simply drop the subject. But then he leaned closer.“Because if you stay, you’re only putting yourself in harm’s way. I’ve seen what happens to those close to him—”“Stop,” I cut him off, a tremor in my voice. I didn’t want to hear this, didn’t want his warnings clouding my already tangled feelings. “I said it’s not your concern.”His eyes hardened, and his expression twisted into something almost bitter. “You’re so stubborn,” he hissed. “You really think you can handle being his mate? Do you think you’re safe here, Catherine?”I lifted my chin, refusing to give ground. “I’m not afraid of him.”“Then you’re a fool. Besides, that's all lie
CATHERINE The night had been restless. Sleep was a distant memory, chased away by the lingering ache of Kane’s absence. Every rustle of the wind, every crackling of the fire outside the tent, made me wonder where he was and if he was safe.I sat on the edge of the cot, staring at my hands when Camille suddenly rushed in, looking all antsy like something terrible had just happened. In her hand was the small, battered phone Kane had left behind, the phone which was used to communicate with us. It chimed again and I noticed a faint glow of the screen illuminating her fingers.“Catherine,” she called out to me, looking so serious. “There’s a message.”My heart leaped into my throat. “From Kane?”She nodded and handed me the phone. My fingers trembled as I swiped at the screen, revealing a simple yet piercing message:“Meet me at the quiet garden just outside the town’s border. I miss you so much. Kane.”My stomach twisted. K
CATHERINE When I opened my eyes, the first thing I noticed was the silence. The camp, usually humming with activity, felt oddly subdued. Stretching out on the bed, I instinctively reached for Kane, but the space beside me was cold. My heart sank.I sat up, scanning the room. His cloak was gone, as were his boots. Panic surged through me.“Camille!” I called out in a bit of a yell. The door creaked open, and Camille appeared, looking all cautious. “You’re awake.”“Where is Kane?” I demanded, swinging my legs over the side of the bed. “Don’t tell me he left.”Camille hesitated, her hands fidgeting. That was all the confirmation I needed.“He did, didn’t he?” My voice cracked. Anger bubbled in my chest, together with a sense of betrayal. “And he didn’t even have the decency to tell me? To say goodbye?”“Catherine—”I cut her off, pacing the small room. “How could he do this? After everything, he just leaves? What if something happens to him?”Camille stepped forward, raising g her hand
KANEThe silence in the dungeon stretched, broken only by the occasional drip of water echoing from somewhere in the darkness. I leaned back against the cold, damp wall, thinking about methods and strategies as well as the possibilities that came with them. Zelda might think she’d won, but she underestimated me.The burglary creaked slightly, catching my attention. I sat up, my senses sharpening. Footsteps echoed down the corridor. The guards wouldn’t be walking down here for no good reason, and Zelda never treaded anywhere without making an announcement of her presence.I focused my ear to listen to whose footstep it was but before I could, the shadow that appeared before my cell brought a faint smirk to my lips.“Durmas,” I said quietly. “Took you long enough.”Durmas glanced over his shoulder before stepping closer, his face serious. “Kane,” he whispered, his voice barely audible over the burning torches. “I thought they might have beaten the fight out of you, but you look... surp
KANEIt didn't take long after I stepped out of Durmas’s chambers when I saw her—Zelda. She was standing in the center of the corridor, flanked by her entourage of loyalists. Her posture was regal, but I could see the malice dancing in her eyes. She walked toward me with a disarming smile, her hands folded delicately in front of her.“Ah, my son,” she said in a honey coated voice. “You’ve finally returned home. I was starting to worry about you.”I stopped in my tracks, fixing her with a hard stare. “Cut the act, Zelda.”Her smile faltered, the saccharine sweetness fading just slightly. “Act? What do you mean?”I stepped closer, closing the gap between us. “Spare me the pretense. I’d rather deal with the real you—the scheming, conniving woman I know you to be. At least then, I know what I’m up against.”A bit of irritation crossed her face, but she quickly masked it with a soft laugh. Behind her were the people she had brought with her, guards, attendants, and advisors. They bowed th
KANEThe journey to the castle was grueling. Night had fallen, and the cold wind howled through the space as I drove past. I kept my senses sharp and my ears tuned to every sound around me. It was dark, no doubt creatures lurked around, some more dangerous than others. After a while, I paused my journey when I was about to get to the border. I can't just get in blindly. Suddenly, a snap echoed to my right and I would down the car window. My hand instinctively reached for my dagger, holding it tightly in my palm."Come out," I growled into the darkness. For a moment, there was silence. Then, from the shadows, a man stumbled forward, his clothes torn and his face pale with fear. His hands were raised in surrender."Please," he croaked, collapsing to his knees. "Don’t kill me. I mean no harm."I alighted cautiously, keeping my weapon ready. "Who are you? What are you doing here? It's fucking cold and dry out here.""My name’s Garret," he said, trembling. "I’m from the city. I was traveli
KANECatherine had finally fallen asleep, her chest heaving as she breathed in slumber. I could feel her worry radiating off her even as she slept with the way she clung so tightly to me. Gently, I shifted her in my arms and laid her down on the couch. I smoothed a strand of hair from her face, leaned down, and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. She might not know it, but I understood her well enough even if she tried her best not to show her worry deeply. She tried masking it not wanting to burden me. I knew her that well at least."Sleep well," I whispered. She stirred for a moment but didn’t wake.Straightening up, I made my way to the door, pausing only briefly to glance back at her peaceful, albeit tear-streaked face. The sight made my chest tighten, but I forced myself to step outside, closing the door quietly behind me. Camille was already waiting. I had nudged her earlier informing her to let us talk outside before laying Catherine off my chest."What’s the plan?" she asked
CATHERINE Back in the house, Kane paced back and forth, his heavy footsteps echoing against the hardwood floors. His brows were furrowed, as he was thinking. Each time he turned, frustration radiated off him in waves. We had made sure nobody left the camp after the incident, not even Davina and her team."Damn it," Kane muttered under his breath, filled with anguish. "I can’t just stand here while those kids... while more people suffer because of me."I sat at the edge of the couch, thinking too. Camille perched beside me, her gaze bouncing between Kane and me. I knew she was struggling to piece together what she’d just learned since she had no idea how Kane's relationship with Zelda was or who Esme really was. Finally, Camille broke the silence cautiously. "Catherine, explain this to me again. From the beginning. I need to understand what’s really happening here."I drew in a deep breath before diving into details. "Esme isn’t who we thought she was. She’s one of Zelda’s pawns, sen
CATHERINE “Esme,” I muttered. I didn't even know when the word left my lips. She was one of Zelda’s closest allies, a woman Kane and I both knew too well. Well, Kane knew her more than I did. I only got the chance to know her because of the mating ceremony which was of course, ruined.Seeing Davina’s face change into Esme’s was like being struck by lightning. My legs felt weak, and for a moment, I thought I’d collapse. The world spun as I struggled to reconcile the two faces. How could this have happened?Camille’s voice broke through my haze of disbelief. “Catherine, what’s going on? Do you know her?”I turned to my sister, my voice shaky. “She’s… she’s Esme. Zelda’s friend. I saw her when I was preparing for the mating ceremony with Kane. She was there. I… I can’t believe this.”Esme’s sly smile only added to the knot of unease in my chest. I pointed a trembling finger at her. “What are you doing here? What is the meaning of this?”Esme’s lips curled into a sly smile. “Delivering
KANEThe scent my beast picked up wasn't just a normal odouror something. It was a feeling. But I didn't have the chance to decipher what it was. Fear? Intimidation? I wasn't sure. But it was a very good feat for me nevertheless. It led me to someone because as soon as it disappeared, it returned. My wolf prowled close to the surface, growling with anticipation, urging me to act, to find the truth buried in the fear-stricken crowd. I could feel the lies hanging in the air, the deceit woven among these so-called helpers. And I so much would tear it out, root and stem, no matter the cost.“Bring them forward,” I barked thunderously, pointing to some of the people ahead. If they weren't going to talk willingly, I might as well try another method. The men I gave the orders to dragged the first suspect into the center of the clearing. It was a young medic, pale and trembling, his glasses askew on his nose. I paced in front of him like a predator.“Name,” I demanded.“D-David, sir,” the ma
