Reily’s POV
Today is my first anniversary with my boyfriend. I'm so excited! A year of love and beautiful memories, ones that have been made and yet to be made. Noel, my boyfriend, owns a cafe, one at which I took a part-time job. It’s been an amazing experience so far, getting to see him all the time. The sneaky moment we took to make out while at work, the thought alone made me blush. To celebrate our special day, I decided to buy him a gift. I chose a beautiful watch that I knew he would love. It took me so much to save up to be able to afford a watch, anything for my man. As I entered the store, the salesgirl greeted me. "Hi, can I help you?" "I'd like to buy a watch, please," I replied. The salesgirl showed me some options, and I finally found the perfect one. My lips spread into a smile as I imagined how happy he was going to be when I gave him this. It made me wonder what gift he has for me. As I was about to pay, the salesgirl made a comment that made me blush, feeling a little shy. "Wow, you're splurging on this gift. He must be someone special," she said with a smirk. My face heated up as I tried to keep a natural look, but who was I kidding? I shrugged and said, "Yeah, he is." After buying the watch, I headed to the cafe. As I arrived, Selina, my best friend and colleague, greeted me. "Hey, Reily! Happy anniversary!" she exclaimed. "Thanks, Selina! I'm so excited for today," I replied. She chuckled, “I could tell.” Selina's expression suddenly turned serious. “Anyway, your darling boyfriend hasn’t been here all day.” My heart skipped a beat as my brows drew together in confusion. Where could he be? But then I thought, Maybe he's planning a surprise! My inner conscience giggled at the thought as thousands of thoughts ran through my mind on what Noel’s surprise could be. I couldn't help but feel excited. I hope our date goes well tonight. "Thanks for telling me, Selina," I said, trying to sound calm. Selina smiled. "No problem, Reily. I'm sure he'll make it up to you tonight." I nodded, feeling a little more at ease. The rest of the day went by like a blur, as I packed my stuff up, ready to leave; I received a call. I groaned, wondering who it could be this time. I picked up the phone from the counter, my lips forming into a smile seeing Noel’s name appear on the screen. I slid the answer button, placing the phone on my left ear, but instead, I heard a familiar voice. It was Martin, his best friend. "Hey, Reily, sorry I am calling; something came up!" he said, sounding hesitant. "What is it?" I asked, worry laced in my tone. "Noel is drunk at a bar. I think you should come pick him up," he said. I felt annoyed. Why was he at a bar on our anniversary? Gosh! What is the matter with him? He is supposed to be getting ready for a dinner date, not getting drunk in a bar. I hissed in annoyance; I didn't want to ruin our special day, so I decided to go pick him up. I finished up and rushed out to hail a cab. When I arrived at the bar, I spotted my boyfriend sitting at the counter, laughing with his ex. My heart sank. What was going on? My face fell into a deep frown as I walked closer, my heart squeezing at the sight of them sharing a kiss. No! Please, no! My lips quivered as rage surged within me; I grasped a nearby glass of drink and poured it all over them. "Reily, what the...?" Noel stuttered, shocked. Tears were already beginning to accumulate at the brim of my eyes. “How could you, Noel?” I asked, my voice shaking with anger. He pushed his ex slightly off of him, getting up from the seat. “Reily—“ I cut him off, “Do you even remember what day it is?" I demanded. He looked taken aback, then guilty, and finally annoyed. "It's our anniversary, okay?" he said like it was no big deal. I felt humiliated. "And you're spending it with your ex? What is wrong with you? Today is supposed to be our day." He shrugged. "We were just catching up." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. “Catching up? You call this catching up? You were fucking kissing her!” I fired as a lone tear slipped down. “Look, Reily, you are overreacting,” he stated. I hissed bitterly, letting out a humorous, painful laugh, “Overreacting? Wow, Noel, just great. I find you kissing your ex on our anniversary, and…” I stuttered, unable to find the words. Betrayal dawned on me. "You know what? I don't even care about that right now," I said, my voice rising. "What are you talking about?" he asked, looking confused. "So you’ve been with her these past few days, and you’ve been oddly distant; all of it is because of her," I accused. He looked taken aback, but then he just shrugged. "No, I haven't," he said like it was no big deal. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. Seeing them together made my heart squeeze. This is the man my heart belongs to, the one I love so much. His ex chimed in, smiling smugly. "So you're the substitute?" She said, looking at me with disdain. "I broke up with him because I went abroad, but now I'm back; you can piss off," she added. I felt furious. My hands lifted to land a slap on her face, but Noel held my hands, restricting contact. “That’s enough, Reily, you are making a scene… Go home; we’ll talk when I get back,” he orders I scoffed, “Fuck you, Noel!” “Reily—” he trailed off. "We're done," I told him, my voice firm. He looked annoyed, but I didn't care. I turned and walked away, leaving him and his ex behind. He didn’t come after me; he stayed with her like I never did matter. The question is, did I ever matter?Reily’s POVI walked into my apartment, my heart heavy. I couldn't stop thinking about the past year. I realized that many signs pointed to the truth: that arsehole never truly loved me.If only I hadn’t been too oblivious. The truth was right in front of me, yet I failed to see it; I was blinded by the love I had for him. The start of our relationship was so beautiful that I never thought it would end so soon. He has not only broken my heart but crushed the plans I had for us.I felt heartbroken because I loved him so much. I never imagined he could be such a good actor and fool me around.I thought about all the times he made me feel special, all the sweet words he whispered in my ear. It was all a lie.I felt tears welling up in my eyes. I couldn't believe I wasted a whole year of my life on him.As I lay in bed, I couldn't stop crying. I felt like my heart was shattered into a million pieces.Just as I was starting to fall asleep, my phone rang. I groggily picked it up, hoping i
Aiden’s POVToday was my grandpa's 70th birthday. I had been busy with work and hadn't visited him in months, so I decided to cancel a meeting and head home early. Before I left, I wanted to pick out a special gift for Grandpa. He had raised me since I was a baby after my parents passed away. I knew it couldn't have been easy for him, a busy businessman, to take care of an infant. But he believes he owes me that much.I went to the mall and browsed through a few stores, looking for the perfect gift.I wanted something that would match his taste, but they seemed to have nothing satisfying. As I was surfing through their collections, in line, I overheard a girl complaining about rich people being demanding and never satisfied. My frown deepened.I turned to look at her, and our eyes met for a brief moment. She looked away quickly, but I was intrigued. Her hazel eyes were oddly attractive. There was something about them that caught my attention.I finally found what I wanted and paid for
Riely’s POVI stopped by the cafe with a smile plastered on my lips; working for Aiden Russel was a dream come true, and now that it is actually happening, I couldn’t be happier.I was here to share the news with Selina.I met her at the counter taking orders from a few customers.“For someone that got her heartbroken, you seem oddly excited… What’s up?” She asked with her left brow raised.I let her finish with the last customer before stepping in.“Guess what?” I exclaimed, barely containing my excitement.“You hit the jackpot?”I nodded, “Yes, kinda… but which?”“You tell me,” she responded.“I got the job at the Russel Company. I was offered the position to be Mr. Russel’s assistant.”Selina's face lit up with a warm smile. "That's amazing, Riley! Congratulations! Tell me, is he hotter in person?” I scoffed, “Oh please, he’s my boss… don’t go there” I warned and she shrugged. She held my hand in excitement as we celebrated, but a familiar voice interrupted from behind.Noel.“I s
Aiden’s POVI was glad Riley accepted my invitation to dinner. I was thrilled but chose to play it cool and not make it too obvious.I roamed my stare at her, admiring the red dress she wore that hugged every curve elegantly and perfectly.A pang of attraction hit me.“I apologize again for Elena’s behavior; she—”She cut me off, “This is like the fourth time you’ve said this, and I told you, sir, it’s fine,” she said, a smile spreading on her lips.I paused momentarily before saying. "You see, Riley, Elena’s father was my father's driver. They both died in a car accident when I was just born. I've known Elena since we were kids, and I've always felt responsible for her.”Her expression changed to sympathy. "I'm so sorry, Mr. Russell. I had no idea."I nodded, taking a sip of my drink. "Yeah, it was a tough time for all of us. But despite her temper, Elena is incredibly talented. I've tried to ignore her bad behavior as long as she's not too out of control."Riley nodded, “I get it. S
Riely’s POVI slowly opened my eyes, groggily taking in my surroundings. But as my gaze moved across the room, my heart rate began to escalate. Where was I? This wasn't my hotel room. Panic set in. I felt a lump clog in my throat as I thought about how I got here.Yesterday’s event came rushing down like a wave of nostalgia. I remember drinking too much, but after that, nothing seemed clear to me.As I sat up, my head spinning, fuck! Hangover. My sight fell on a figure standing by the window before it dawned on me.It was Aiden. My heart skipped a beat as our eyes met. He was shirtless, his muscular chest on full display. I felt dizzy, my mind racing with questions. What happened last night? Did we... did we do something?Aiden's brows furrowed as he turned fully, giving me a better view of his biceps, and he took a step forward. “You're awake," he said, his voice low and smooth. "Don't worry, nothing happened between us last night."A smirk lingered on his lips, making my cheeks hea
Riely’s POV“What’s wrong?” Aiden asked, snapping me out of my train of thought.I decided to be direct and told Aiden that I received a call from the hospital.“Did they receive the transfer?” He immediately asked. My brows furrowed, taken aback—so he was the one that transferred the money to them? I couldn't hide my surprise.“But… but how?” I couldn’t help but ask.How does he even know about my mom and the hospital bills?Aiden stopped what he was doing and turned to me with a sincere expression. "You got drunk last night and told me that your mother needed surgery," he explained gently. "You were crying and saying that you had no money and your only hope was your monthly allowance."I felt my face heat up with embarrassment. God, how could I be so stupid when I was drunk?! Aiden continued, "I thought we were already friends, and considering you helped me with the contract signing, I decided to pay your salary in advance."I was touched by his kindness. Because of my ex-boyfriend,
Aiden’s POVAs we sat in the car, recalling Diego’s message made me bite back a smile of excitement; I didn’t want to show it because Riley was right next to me.I replied to him, asking him to come to the company when I got back. We needed to have a face-to-face talk.On the way back, Riley received a call from the hospital. Seeing her blank look after hanging up the phone was interesting. I didn't expect her to be so direct, but I think that's what makes her charming.“Look Riley, I am just helping you as a friend. Besides, you were very helpful in signing the contract. If it weren't for your hard work and good professional skills, we might have had to pay more.” I said sincerely. Her lips spread into a smile, “Thank you Aiden, this means a lot though.” A smile tugged on my lips seeing her all excited and grateful.God, Riley! I felt a pang of guilt knowing the sole reason for paying for the bills was because I wanted her to trust me more so I could get useful information more eas
Riley’s POVI stepped into the office, my heart filled with so much contentment and satisfaction; knowing that I didn’t have my mother’s hospital bills to pay felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my chest. And this was all thanks to Aiden. I couldn’t thank him enough; letting out a sigh of relief, a small smile tugged on my lips.As I made my way to my office, Jessica stopped me. "Riley, I would like to have a word,” she said, her tone harsh.I nodded, my brows furrowing, wondering what she wanted to talk about. "Molina told me that your salary was paid in advance?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.I knew Molina was the financial director and Jessica's good friend, so it wasn't surprising that she had told Jessica about this. "Yes," I answered cautiously.Jessica let out a scoff, her expression turning unbelievably, "You're just a new employee who's been working for less than a week. What qualifications do you have to draw your salary in advance? Or is it the boss's trust that m
Chapter 30 Aiden's Pov I rode back home after dropping Riley and I couldn't stop thinking about Riley. The way she talked, the way she moved, the way she laughed, the way she just carried herself -- it was all there for someone to see. Ever since she came into my company, it has been exciting with good news and more hard work. Riley wasn't a lazy woman and she is only one with principles. I felt so happy and relieved that she finally warmed up to me. I mean, I kissed her twice in one day. It wasn't enough but that was more than enough. I chuckled when I remembered how she hurried into her apartment because she was shy. But Diego's words were like a bucket of cold water that was poured on me. 'Don't forget what you should do' I don't know if he intentionally said that to ruin the mood, to discourage me from pursuing Riley further. What he said was probably meant for me to stay away from Riley but I knew he didn't mean it that way. His words calmed me down, throwing me into anoth
Riley's PovDiego was surprised that his mother asked Aiden to take me home instead of him since she liked me and wanted him to get married. That act and everything that happened felt funny to me except the kiss, of course."Take care ma'am." I hugged Diego's mother."Make sure to come around some other time." She hugged me back and rubbed my back.I nodded because that little hug gesture reminded me of my mother. I couldn't wait to see her again but sadly, that'd be till the next weekend when there will be no work to attend to.We walked out of the study with Aiden ready to take me home. Diego stepped beside Aiden, pulled his hand and I paused. "Don't forget what you should do." Diego whispered to him with a serious expression.I frowned slightly, feeling very confused. What was he talking about? What was Aiden supposed to do that he hasn't done? Was there something I was unaware about? Or maybe they have some personal unfinished business that wasn't my concern.Aiden didn't respond
Riley's PovAiden slammed his lips on mine immediately and my eyes flustered close. It wasn't expected but I found myself liking it. He straightened me up and guided my back against the door.It wasn't my first kiss but my mind, heart and body were reacting strongly to it. His tongue divided into my mouth and I found myself reciprocating to his kiss. The kiss was warm and inviting. I didn't feel like it was going to end soon. It was forceful at first when it started but slowly, I started releasing myself to feel it. I remembered my ex - boyfriend didn't kiss me like this, he has never kissed me like that before. What was the difference? It was the emotions that were being communicated through the kiss. I dug my fingers into Aiden's hair, pulling him closer. Damn, I was enjoying every moment of it that I forgot we were having an argument about Diego.Aiden stopped kissing me, pressing his fingers against my bottom lip. He watched me breath heavily until I could regulate my breathing an
Riley's PovThe birthday actually went more smoothly than I expected. I met with new people and had a good talk with them even though they treated me like I didn't exist. That was one of the problems that rich people always have. They always see every other person beneath their legs, below their standards, like others were the dirt they stepped on which was absolutely annoying. But I wasn't bothered because I came here on behalf of someone else. I came because it was Diego's birthday. I didn't need to think about any other thing or any other person that was irrelevant. Diego's mother asked me to stay over for a while which I agreed to."Riley, have you noticed that my mom likes you?" Diego suddenly said, sitting close to me on the chair.I didn't look surprised because it was definitely obvious that she liked me and I also liked her too. She had a good spirit and always wanted everyone around her to be happy, just like my mother."She has been urging me to get married but I said I hav
Aiden's Pov"Is it -- my favorite brand?" Diego exclaimed and I nodded. He pulled me into a happy hug immediately and I reciprocated back with the same energy.Diego had always wanted his favorite brand of sports car all his life and that was the intentional gift I could give to him. It wasn't too much because he was my best friend and my brother so he was worth it."How is it going? I didn't see anyone downstairs when I came." I took a seat just opposite and he also sat down on his former seat.Diego shrugged. "My mother took care of the guests but it isn't time yet. They should be arriving soon though." He answered.Of course, I understood that women loved such things especially parties so it was only understandable that it was his mother doing everything about the party, she had always been the one."Any girlfriends?" I asked jokingly.Diego scoffed, "You were the hot boy of those sessions. I was like a nerd beside you so I should be asking you that." He replied."That's not entire
Aiden's PovThe week was going very smoothly, especially about me being able to see Riley's face. I have never seen anyone as enthusiastic as she was. She was always filled with energy, going around with positivity."I am proud of you, Riley." I shook her hands in congratulations. Her design passed the board's resolution and successfully entered the manufacturing stage.I saw that she had been very nervous earlier in the boardroom but there was no way I could have talked to her or made her feel less nervous about the whole thing. But thank goodness the entire project team ran very well and she was officially in. I was relieved that she was now on the project team because it meant I'd get to see her often."Thank you, boss." Riley said with a smile, withdrawing her hands almost immediately.I glanced around and saw that no one was watching. She was so quick in withdrawing her hands and that pricked something in me. "You should work harder. There were no mistakes in this doesn't mean yo
Riley's PovI laid in my bed, tossing and turning. For more than two hours into the night, I have been unable to sleep. 'What was on my mind?' The answer was - Aiden and Diego. The truth was I couldn't ignore Diego's kindness to me. What he did tonight, his attitude towards me was just too comfortable. I mean, the pulling of chairs, wiping of my lips, paying for dinner even when it was what I owed him, inviting me to his birthday party - it was just too real. But I had strong feelings for Aiden. It may be the first time I was having such a thought and the first time I was admitting that I actually liked my boss."Diego is just a friend." My mind reminded me. I almost slapped my forehead in foolishness. How could I have forgotten?I mean, friends do those things for each other right? Besides, I rejected my boss, not for Diego or anything. I wasn't sure why I rejected him but it came that way though but he would only remain my boss in the future.I turned again, feeling very confused. I
Riley's PovI cleared my throat awkwardly and Diego sat down. The conversation was cut short with both of us focusing on our food. The silence went on for about two minutes."Why is it awkward?" Diego suddenly chuckled and I bursted into laughter."That's a very good question." I wiped my entire lips with one of the tissues to avoid another scene repeating itself.Diego chuckled, dropping his fork. "What are your hobbies?" He asked, looking at me.His gaze was so exceptional that I had to remind myself mentally because he was talking to me. "Hobbies? I am not sure. I like and dislike doing everything." I answered in the most honest way possible. All my life has revolved around my ex-boyfriend. Now, I was busy with work so I didn't have anything I liked. Well, something I could consider as a likable thing was me picking tulips for my mother."What do you mean? That's weird. How is it possible for a female not to have any hobbies? She likes everything and dislikes everything? That's ver
Riley's povIt was a Saturday, a time where I could finally do the things I needed to do without being bothered by work. Quickly, I packed the necessary things into my bag and carried the tulips that were wrapped perfectly well in my hands.I took a cab to my mother's hospital, greeted the receptionist, picked a card and headed to her ward. The ward didn't smell particularly nice but I was already used to it since I came here more than four times every week in the past."Mom!" -- "Oh my God, Riley!" We both shouted simultaneously as we threw ourselves into each other’s arms.Tears spilled from my eyes. I was so happy that she was gradually improving. Never had I thought I would get to see my mother or hug her this close again."Riley, how are you doing? You have lost a lot of weight!" My mother exclaimed, pushing me backwards to take a good look.I rolled my eyes and chuckled. "Mom, I have missed you so much. You don't know how much, that's why i haven't been doing well." That was the
