CHAPTER 47: BIRTHDAY DISASTER (2)
NOAH'S POV
I slam the door shut behind me, my breath ragged as fury claws at my chest. The house is silent, but I do not mind it; I am used to that kind of life. I can’t even think straight. My mind is a hurricane, spinning out of control, each gust of anger fueled by the images of Rachel that had been sent to me.
Marco looks up, startled. So he knows about the birthday party. He probably wasn’t expecting me home so early. Neither was I. Today was supposed to be my birthday. A day I never really cared about, but somehow, I let myself believe—for a brief moment—that it could be different. That maybe, just maybe, I could enjoy something normal. But I was a fool.
“Sir? Why are you back this early?” Marco takes a cautious step forward.
I ignore him, heading straight to the wine cabinet. My fingers tremble as I grab the first bottle of strong whiskey I can find. The cap clatters onto the marble countertop, forgotten as I pour myself a heavy drink. The amber liquid burns my throat, but the pain is welcome. It’s better than the agony ripping through my chest.
Marco shifts uncomfortably. I can feel his eyes on me, worried, calculating. He has never seen me like this before. No one has. I don’t drink like this. I don’t lose control. But tonight, everything feels different and I hate myself for letting myself be vulnerable because of an employee.
I don't care!
I shouldn't care!
But she is married to me even if it was just a contract! Having an affair shouldn't be the next thing.
The glass slams onto the counter as I pour another. The past few months flash before my eyes—Rachel, her stubbornness, her defiance, the way she somehow wormed her way into my life, into my goddamn heart. And now? Now, she throws it all away. I was just about to let her in. I was just about to give her a chance, to give us a chance, maybe she will be able to prove my belief wrong.
Just then, my head starts to pound. My vision gets blurs.
Voices echo in my mind, distant but clear. Mocking, cruel.
“Noah is incapable of love.”
“You should be grateful if you can receive a shred of love from anyone because you are not worth anything.”
“No one will ever love you.”
I squeeze my eyes shut, but the words remain. They cut through me like a blade, each syllable deepening wounds that never really healed. I grip the glass so tightly I almost expect it to shatter. Maybe I want it to. Maybe that will cause me to feel a bit of relief.
The sound of the front door opening barely registers. My head is spinning too much for me to care. But then… her scent. Subtle. Familiar. My eyes snap open.
Rachel.
She stands frozen at the entrance, her breath hitching the moment our eyes meet. I don’t smile. I don’t move. I just watch her, my gaze heavy with hatred and disappointment. She hesitates before stepping inside, casting a quick glance at Marco, who looks just as tense as she does.
I set my drink down, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand as she approaches.
"Why are you here?"
"What happened Noah? Why did you end the birthday celebration all of a sudden? I got back only to find things..."
“You have some nerve,” I mutter, my voice hoarse, laced with bitterness.
Rachel doesn’t flinch. Her hands tremble slightly, but she stands her ground. “Noah… I—”
I scoff. “Don’t.” I take a step closer, and she takes a step back. Good. “You left. You ran off in the middle of my birthday..."
"I am so sorry. It was urgent."
"... to be with another man which is urgent.”
Her eyes widen. "Another man?"
"Do you think that I am a fool? Do you believe you can just swoop me in with your lies and deceit?"
“It’s not what you think.”
"Oh, it’s exactly what I think.” My chest tightens. “How could you have done such a thing to me? How dare you! Did you lose your sense of morality, huh? Did you? I was...the only thing I wanted to do was to just trust you! You played me! You used me like everyone else did. I have always wondered why your movements seem to be always frequent. I didn't want to believe those thoughts but you just confirmed it tonight. I should’ve known. I should’ve never—” I shake my head, unable to even finish.
The pain morphs into rage. The trust I let myself build shatters into pieces.
"I...I didn't do anything. He is just a friend..."
“You kissed him,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper, but she hears it. I see it in the way her body tenses, in the way her lips part but no words come out.
RACHEL'S POV
My heart drops.
How does he know? How did he—
It doesn’t matter. He knows. And he’s furious.
“Noah, please, just listen—”
“Listen?” He laughs bitterly, shaking his head as he runs a hand through his hair. “I don’t need to listen. I saw enough.”
Guilt slams into me like a tidal wave. I should have explained immediately. I should have told him everything before this moment. But I didn’t. And now, standing in front of him, I don’t even know where to start.
“Elvis was drunk. His sister called me. He was breaking things, screaming my name. I had to—”
“Had to what?” Noah cuts in, stepping forward until he’s right in front of me. “Had to kiss him?”
“It wasn’t like that!” My voice rises, desperate. “I was just trying to calm him down. He was a mess, Noah. He—”
“I don’t care! You were trying to calm another man with a kiss? Can't you see how silly that sounded like?" His voice roars through the room, his anger finally boiling over.
His fists clench at his sides, his breathing ragged. “You don’t get it, do you? You left me.” His voice cracks, his mask slipping for just a second before he hardens again. “You left me for him.”
Tears well in my eyes. “It’s not like that.”
“Then what is it like, Rachel?” He demands, his voice quieter now, but no less dangerous. “Because from where I’m standing, it looks pretty damn clear what your intentions are. You are married to me, Rachel! You are supposed to abide by the rules."
I swallow back a sob. I want to reach for him, but he looks at me like I’m a stranger. Worse. Like I’m a betrayal he never saw coming.
I shake my head. “I didn’t want to hurt you.”
His laugh is hollow. “Congratulations, then. You did a terrible job.”
The silence stretches between us, thick and suffocating. I can feel the weight of everything crashing down, the hurt in his eyes cutting me deeper than I thought possible.
“I trusted you,” he finally says, his voice quieter now, more broken. “I let myself believe… for once… that maybe I wasn’t completely alone.”
My breath hitches. “Noah…”
“But I was wrong. You are no different. You are just like everyone else. Every...fucking... one else! Now, let me make this clear to you. As from henceforth, stay away from me. Speak to me only when you are allowed to. Remember that you are nothing but a fucking employee in my hotel and you have no extra benefits for bearing my last name. Speak to me with respect at home the same way you would at work. Refer to me as only Mr.Noah.
Don't overstep your boundaries, and the next time I get to see you with your ex, this marriage won't come to an end, but I will make life unbearable and a living hell for you. You will have to work to pay my money back to me. I hope I have made myself clear.”The finality in his voice shatters me. He brushes past me without another word, leaving me standing there, drowning in regret.
The door to his bedroom slams shut. I stumble back, the weight of his words knocking the breath out of me before I crumble to the floor.
And I know—I’ve lost him and I am back to square one.
CHAPTER 48: BACK TO SQUARE ONE.RACHEL'S POV.My eyes snap open immediately after my phone's alarm rang. I am not sure if I have properly gotten enough sleep, but my eyes are heavy, and so is my heart. I remain in the same position that I slept in - chest up and hands below my tummy, almost like the position of a dead one. "I don't want to move," I whisper to myself as I try to hold back a tear that is threatening to fall off my eyes. Is this probably the storm that Diva mentioned that I was going to face when reading my card? So, it wasn't fake after all.I push myself from the bed and head to the bathroom to shower. While brushing my teeth, I flashback to yesterday's event.I was still speaking with my colleagues when my phone's brightened screen caught my attention so I had to pay attention to it. I clutched my phone tightly as I stared at the message on the screen. It was an unknown number, crying for help with Elvis's name attached to it—it was enough to make my entire body te
CHAPTER 49:DO YOU LOVE HIM? RACHEL'S POV.The café is warm, and the scent of freshly brewed coffee fills the air, but it does nothing to comfort me. My fingers tremble as I stir my drink, watching the milk swirl into the dark liquid before fading into a murky brown. My chest feels tight, my throat raw from holding back the sobs that threaten to break free. Emily sits across from me, her eyes soft with concern, waiting patiently for me to finish speaking. “I just... I just don’t know, Emily,” I murmur, my voice barely above a whisper. I wipe my tear-stained cheek. My fingers tighten around the warm cup as I blink rapidly, trying to stop more tears from slipping down my cheeks. “I couldn’t just ignore the call. Dorcas sounded so desperate. I was afraid that she was going to get hurt because of the screams. Elvis was wrecking things... I—I had to go. I had to help him. Am I at fault?"Emily sighs, reaching across the table to take my hand. Her grip is gentle but firm. “Rachel, list
Chapter OneI stand outside Mr. Noah's office, my hands clutching my bag, my knuckles white with tension. My heart seems to be pounding in my throat as I take a shaky breath, trying to calm myself. I know I have no business being here, no business asking him for this favor. But with my father lying in the hospital, his condition deteriorating with each passing day, I have no other choice. The thought sends shivers down my spine.I lift my hand and knock, barely able to hold it steady.“Enter.” Mr. Noah's voice is composed, almost bored, coming from the other side of the door.I step inside, feeling the nerves twist in my stomach. Mr. Noah is sitting at his large, polished desk surrounded by neat stacks of paperwork. He doesn’t glance up right away, merely looks in my direction, almost as if I’m an interruption to his day.“Mr. Noah,” I begin, my voice far quieter than it should be. I clear my throat, hoping to try again with a bit more bravado. “I need a minute of your time.”He doesn
Chapter Two I sit alone in the dimly lit room inside the hall, clutching my phone tight. The screen lights up to yet another call from him, my boyfriend. I peer at his name, feeling my heart twist, but I don't answer. How could I explain any of this, the lie I'm about to live, the promise I'm about to make to another man? I feel the weight of the betrayal, yet I cannot bring my fingers to touch "answer." "Miss Rachel?" A soft voice pulls me out of my thoughts, and I look up to see an assistant standing at the door. Her face is blank and professional, as though this were just another task on her list. "Yes?" I say, barely above a whisper. "They're ready for you," she says politely, but I catch the hint of pity in her eyes. I nod slowly and rise to my feet, feeling the weight of the moment pressing down on me. As I step into the main room, my stomach churns. Barely a couple of family and close associates seem to pay any attention to my presence. At the front, Mr. Noah waits, lo
Chapter Three: The First NightI sit alone in this big, cold bedroom. It is supposed to be my wedding night, but the silence wraps around me like a tight blanket. The bed is perfectly made, untouched, as if it’s waiting for someone who may never come. I glance at the clock on the wall; the emptiness of this room seems to swallow me up.Why am I alone on my wedding night? At least I could have expected some conversation, some acknowledgment that we were now married, though that marriage was not born out of love but rather out of force. But there is complete silence. And then it dawns on me—the cold reality of what Noah had said before. This is a business arrangement, period. I am his wife on paper, and that’s just it.I glance around, feeling the weight of this decision pressing down on me. My father is safe; his hospital bills are paid. Debt against my family’s name is a thing of the past. And maybe—maybe I could make this marriage work and pull my family out of poverty, securing a fu
Chapter Four : Rachel's Accidental Meeting with Elvis at the Charity Ball The air is filled with the chimes of laughter and music as I step into the grand ballroom. The hall is decorated with shiny lights and expensive pieces of art. In my simple dress, I am like a fish out of water among all these fancy whirling gowns. I look up at Noah, who seems deep in discussion with his business partners. Guilt reeks from his disposition as he looks very serious. He does not even notice me standing next to him. I know I was only here to play the part of his wife. As Noah walks away, the loneliness sets in. I look around, wondering what will amuse me, but it seems everyone has something to do, and they are all important. I take a deep breath and decide to wander a bit, hopeful to stumble upon a friendly face or maybe even a snack. I drift away from the main crowd, past beautiful decorations to a quiet corner of the room. Just when I think that maybe I'll escape this pressure, I hear that fami
Chapter Five: The Risk of Meeting ElvisThe night I see him again, everything changes. Just one glance at Elvis, and it's like all the feelings I've tried to bury rush to the surface, flooding me with memories of love and laughter, of dreams we once shared. I barely make it through the evening, forced to stand by Noah's side, pretending to be his devoted wife. But my heart begins to race, my mind now filled with thoughts of Elvis. Then later, in the quiet of my room, my phone buzzes with a message. From Elvis."Can we meet tomorrow? I know it's risky, but I have to see you."I fixate on his words, a mix of excitement and fear. He's asking me to meet him, to take a chance despite everything that could go wrong. And, of course, I do know what I risk. Noah had made it clear from the beginning that this was a marriage about appearances, about control. The breaking of unspoken rules he wouldn't tolerate, most of all with someone from my past. But my heart is racing, and I refuse to fight t
Chapter Six: An Unexpected GuestIt's a quiet Saturday afternoon, and the soft light filters through the curtains in the living room. I'm sitting on the couch with a bowl of popcorn on my lap, staring blankly at the TV. Noah sits next to me, his gaze fixed intently on the screen. The show is nothing more than background noise. I can feel the space between us filled with things unsaid.I glance at Noah, who looks relaxed, but his expression gives away that he's not fully here with me. I wish I could understand what's going through his mind. It’s strange because the closer you are to someone—and we are—the more removed you can sometimes feel.I nibble on a piece of popcorn, trying to focus on the show, but my mind eventually wanders. I find myself speculating about Noah's past. I really don’t know anything about him; what’s between us is just boss and worker before all these contracts.Suddenly, the front door bursts open, and my head jerks up in surprise. A woman walks in, catching my

CHAPTER 46: BIRTHDAY DISASTER (1)NOAH'S POV. Rachel walks toward me, carrying the birthday cake with both hands. The cheers died down instantly as they all expected my reaction. The flickering candlelight casts a soft glow on her face, and for a moment, everything else fades. She stops just in front of me, her voice gentle as she says, “Happy birthday, Mr. Noah.”It's been a while since I heard her call me that but I get why she did. I don’t respond right away. I just look at her, at the sincerity in her eyes. Then, with a slow breath, I close my eyes and make a wish—though I have no idea what to wish for. Maybe peace. Maybe clarity. Maybe something I’ll never have. I don't know. It never actually works. It's just a facade. When I open my eyes, I blow out the candles. The room erupts in cheers and applause. The sound is loud, yet strangely distant, like I’m underwater. I nod slightly, forcing a small smile, not because I’m comfortable with this, but because I recognize their
CHAPTER 45: SURPRISE BIRTHDAY FROM WIFEYNOAH'S POVI jolt awake, my entire body drenched in sweat, my breath ragged as I struggle to shake off the remnants of my nightmare. The darkness of my room offers no comfort, the dim glow of the bedside lamp casting long shadows on the walls. My heart pounds erratically as the echo of a child’s terrified screams still rings in my ears.I swallow hard, forcing myself to sit up. "Not again," I mumble helplessly as I try to gain control of my senses again. Leaning forward, I rest my head on my lap, my hands gripping the sheets as I try to calm down a bit. Even with the air conditioning humming in the background, the cool air does nothing to ease the clammy heat enveloping me. I stay in that position for a moment, trying to slow my breathing, but the weight in my chest refuses to dissipate.Eventually, I reach for the drawer beside my bed, pulling it open with shaking hands. That is my last option right now.My fingers close around a familiar
CHAPTER 44: PREPARATION.RACHEL'S POV "Wait, what?" I blink at Liam, utterly baffled. "Noah’s birthday is next week?"Liam smirks, leaning back against the counter like he’s just delivered the most important news of the century. "That’s right, Mrs. Sinclair. Your dear husband’s special day is right around the corner, and lucky for you, I’m here to spill the beans."I gape at him, feeling a mix of excitement and disbelief. "Why am I just hearing about this now?"Liam stretches lazily, his grin widening. "Because your husband is a cryptic, brooding man who doesn’t exactly throw confetti at the thought of birthdays. Why do you even think he is going to open his mouth and tell you about it?"I cross my arms, narrowing my eyes at him. Well, he is right. "And you’re telling me this now because…?" "What do you mean by that? Do you mean that you would have preferred if I kept it away from you?"I quickly shake my head, "No, not at all. I didn't mean that. I apologize if my words sound
CHAPTER 43: YOU ARE BLUSHING.RACHEL'S POVIt has been a week since I arrived at the house with Noah. Surprisingly, things have been going well between us. He hasn’t been as cold, and while he still keeps his distance, there’s a certain ease between us now that wasn’t there before. It feels...different.On this particular Saturday, I prepare to leave for an outing. I had promised Emily to come and see her when I came back from the event. As I make my way through the house, I ask Marco if he has seen Noah. Before leaving, I decide that it is best to let Noah know since I didn't speak about wanting to leave the house earlier this morning. "He's in the guest room with someone," Marco informs me. I pause, wondering if it’s even necessary to interrupt him just to inform him about my plans. Would he even care? But something inside me urges me to go, so I do. I find myself standing outside the guest room door. Taking a deep breath, I knock and push it open.As I step into the guest room,
CHAPTER 42: LET ME KISS YOU. RACHEL'S POV.I went to bed last night with mixed emotions, I couldn't even say anything. Noah didn't come to the bedroom last night. I have no idea where he has spent some nights sleeping in. My sleep wasn't that great because of the burden in my night.Waking up this morning is nothing but a pain in my neck. I feel like everything happened because of me. As I dress up, I wonder how my colleagues are going to react to me. Will they stop talking to me? A huge sigh escapes my lips as I weakly sit back on my bed. "Why is all this happening to me? Can I just go a week without feeling this much pressure?" I mumble. I really do not feel like making an appearance, but today is the last day, so I can't bail out now. I have no choice.I step out, and a little part of me is scared about what is likely to happen to me, the cold shoulders that I am going to receive, and other reactions.I get to the kitchen and I meet Beatrice speaking with the girls. They soon
CHAPTER 41: YOU ARE FIRED.RACHEL'S POV "What the hell are you even insinuating?" I shout at Sandra as I can not seem to control my anger anymore. "What?" she looks at me innocently as if she isn't the one brewing the storm. "I am just saying the truth." "Do you know you can get into trouble for saying all of these if you don't have any evidence to back it up?" Beatrice reminds her. "Why should I provide evidence when she can deny it all with her life and her family's? More like swearing. I believe in the active power of swearing so she should swear that she hasn't slept with the boss once. Let her do so."I am on the verge of crying as I watch Sandra continue to belittle my effort and insult me. She has never come for me in a full-blow proportion before. Of course, I knew she didn't like me from the start that I won the best hardworking staff with her going second, but still, she has always maintained her lane, and so have I.I can't even open my mouth to defend myself be
