“We’re here, ma’am.”
The driver’s announcement brought me out of my depressing thoughts.
I quickly wiped my tears a d raised my face. I looked through the window and tried enough, there was the gigantic office building of Nathan.
I paid the cab driver and alighted.
Pulling my sweatshirt around me tighter, I walked towards the building with a heavy heart and slow, hopeless steps.
I was broken but I didn’t want to give up. Regardless, I still loved Nathan and wanted him back. He had refused picking my calls, so I had to come to the office.
This was the only way to see him.
To my shock, this Alicia was with him in his office when I entered.
His face scrunched into an angry scowl. “What are you doing here?”
“What is she doing here, Nathan?” I wasn’t happy seeing that lady in here with him.
“She has every right to be here but you don’t.” He retorted.
“I am your wife, Nathan. Why are doing this to me? To us?” The tears that had been falling ever since that day he had me thrown out didn’t hesitate to run down my cheeks.
I was drained emotionally, physically and mentally. I was currently battling with cold ever since that rain fell on me.
Propelling myself forward, I stood before his desk, the Alicia was positioned on his lap.
“Can’t you take a hint, bitch?” The Alicia sneered derisively.
I ignored her. She wasn’t my problem. “Nathan, please. I’m sorry for whatever I did but don’t do this to me. I beg of you.”
“Will you leave here this minute before I do something drastic?!” He raised his tone, sounding angry.
I let out a cough and quickly wiped my nose with the handkerchief in my pocket. “I’m sick, Nathan. I…I caught a cold that night.”
I had told him thinking he would show concern but to my surprise, his expression was just as stoic and his lips were pressed in an angry line. “What should I do with that piece of information?”
“Take her to the hospital, serve her breakfast in bed, pamper her, kiss her and probably pump her barren womb with more of your sperm with hopes she’d actually get pregnant this time.” Alicia replied with heavy, mean sarcasm.
They both laughed at that.
“Good one, baby.” He kissed her on the mouth.
I watched with a bleeding heart as they sucked each other’s faces off. Jealousy and pain had me walk round the desk to push Alicia off of him.
She almost fell off of not for Nathan’s hand supporting her waist.
“How dare you, Paula?! What the hell is wrong with you?!” Nathan lashed out.
Alicia got up from his lap and retaliated, pushing me hard to the floor of his office. I fell, hitting my back against his wall.
A sharp pain coursed through my waist and I instantly remembered my baby.
“She has to pay for this, Nathan. She has to!” Alicia ranted angrily.
I managed to pull myself up, wiping more tears from my eyes. But I didn’t get up, rather I went on my knees. “I’m sorry, Nathan. Please, I’m sorry. I’m still your wife, you can’t do this to me. P-p-p-please.” I felt body pain from the hard push but I remained kneeling, hoping he would take me back.
“You have been a nuisance for far too long and I think Alicia and me have condoned you enough. You’ll pay for this.” He threatened.
Not taking his words to mean anything, I continued to beg. “Stop doing this, Nathan. You’re hurting me. I’m sorry. Forgive me and let’s go back the way we used to be. Please, I beg of you.”
He made to walk away from the office with Alicia, he was dialing a number. I scrambled to my feet to block his path, Alicia shoved me roughly and I fell again.
The sharp pain I felt around my waist again had me scared and panicky, I didn’t want to lose my child. They left me there in the office.
I was too tired and weak to or even stand, so I remained where I was, curled myself into a ball and wept.
I had never done anything wrong to Nathan. Why would he choose to hurt me this way? I loved him, I always had.
Our marriage of three years was too precious for me to let go of. I’d done everything I could to make it work.
I’d even married him against my father’s wish. He had never wanted me to get married to Nathan, had said he wasn’t good enough for me.
But I insisted. Dad has not forgiven me for that but I didn’t care, just because I loved Nathan and wanted to build a life with him.
Three years, I’d abandoned my own desires, my wants and wishes to make a life with him. That was how much I loved him.
But he was busy cheating on me with a woman who, for some strange reason, looked like me. It made me want to wonder how long this has been going on.
I did not know how long I sat there on the floor of his cold office, feeling pity for myself and crying but when the door finally opened again, I was to beg my heart out for this one last time.
But he and Alicia weren’t alone.
“There she is, officers. She came to steal from me. I have no idea how she was able to get into my office.” Nathan accused.
The two police officers came up to me.
Totally confused, I managed to get up on my feet. “What are you saying, Nathan? I didn’t steal anything from you.”
“Whatever you say, ma’am will be used against you in the court of law.” One of the officers slapped cuffs on both my wrists before I could fully fathom what was happening.
“Nathan what are you doing?” I didn’t even have the strength to fight the officers.
“Make sure she spends time in jail, officers. She also harassed my wife here. Please, restrain her and keep her away from us.” He further said.
“No, I didn’t do any of that officers.” I shook my head, hoping this was one awful dream I’d wake up from.
But they didn’t listen. Fear gripped me and I began to struggle with the last of my strength. I couldn’t go to jail for something I didn’t even do.
I was pregnant, how would I survive jail?
“No! There’s a mistake somewhere.” I cried to the officers, wanting to explain myself but they didn’t seem to be interested.
I turned back to see Nathan and Alicia, twin smirks of their faces. My heart broke and bled even more. This all felt like one nightmare I should be waking up from.
“Nathan, why are you doing this to me?! Three years of our lives?!” I wailed as the officers continued to to lead me — although not without some struggle on my end — out the office door.
“Nathan please, don’t let me go to jail!” I begged one last time before I was finally dragged out of his office.
Every worker stopped what they were doing to watch the drama. Their eyes were on me as I was being led out of there.
Shame had me lowering my head, I stopped struggling and followed like a hopeless ram taken to the slaughterhouse.
All I had done was love Nathan and this was all he could do to reciprocate.
Regret and pain overwhelmed me, making me wish I could turn back the hands of time.
“Is my father in?” I questioned Mr. Russell, my father’s butler. The man himself was surprised to see me. “Yes, he is. Come in.”I stepped into the foyer and almost bawled at the sight of every familiar feeling that wrapped me. Taking a deep breath, I continued my way to his study/private office. He was certain to be there by this time of the day.Gripped by apprehension, I wiped sweat from my palm on my wrinkled skirt and knocked on the door of his study.“Yeah? Who’s that?” His deep voice called.I blew nervous breath and quietly cleared my throat. “I-it’s me, Paula.” I didn’t hear his voice again.Scared to enter and feeling ashamed as well, I wrung my hands. “D-dad, please let me in.”I heard nothing. “I-I’m sorry, pl…” The door opened before I could finish my apology. I met eye to eye with the man who had birthed me. Emotions crippled me, I couldn’t help the tears that fell. “I’m sorry, dad. Y-you were right. I-I should have listened to you.”Dad watched me, not saying a wo
“Hey, babe.” He came in and studied my reflection in the mirror in open admiration. “You look very beautiful in that dress. So very elegant and regal.”I studied myself, blushing at his compliment. “Thank you, baby.”“I bet everyone’s eyes will be on you tonight but trust me, I’m ready to pluck off those wandering eyes.” He kissed my forehead.I giggled like a love-struck teenager, putting my hands around his neck as his went around my waist. “Here’s the result, ma’am.” The doctor I’d come to see handed me a sheet of paper.I held my breath, reading through the result. My smile widened and tears filled my eyes as soon as I spotted the word ‘positive’.I was pregnant. I had used three different pregnancy test strips and all had come out positive but I wanted to be sure, hence, my reason for visiting my family doctor. “I’m pregnant.” I said with tears finally falling down my face. “Yes, congratulations.” The doctor smiled.Nathan would be so happy. We had been trying to get pregnant for a while now.
