Ciara's POV
"Unsaid words are the ones that break me,
The words I never said because of closure that was never brought
Shaking my leg anxiously due to those unsaid words
You broke me
Everything you do, you have broken me."
Shan delivers a reading of my poem assignment for the Arts Appreciation Class.
We are both in our first year of college and went to Father Saturnino Urios University.
"I hope I've handled everything. You are fortunate, and you have made a poem. Can you make me one?" he asked, "I'm not prepared yet! Please, for the sake of me."
"You're not doing your assignments anymore, Shan," I said, rolling my eyes.
"These past few days have simply been too hectic for me. We practiced basketball, and I always offered Julie a ride home," He had a lot on his schedule.
"That's something you can do on your own."
"You can be so cruel at times! Anyway, your poem appears to be quite meaningful yet you seem heartbroken. What is the name of this guy?"
"That's none of your business," I responded, faking a giggle. "I heard you're courting Julie?" I asked.
He's nodding his head, which I notice, "Yes, indeed! Hey, if she says yes, that's great. So, to avoid being broken, you must also tell the man you love how you feel."
It's hilarious to consider that the man he's referring to is himself. "Right. Anyway, I'm going to use the restroom."
I dash to the restroom, and thankfully there is no one there. I wipe a tear from my eyes as I gaze in the mirror.
"Shan, you won't be able to see me. Julie is fortunate in that you notice her. I've known you since we were kids, yet you've never seen me."
I wipe the tears from my eyes again and realize something, "You see me, Shan. You see me as a best friend."
I'm just your best friend.
Never seen before, never felt.
I was the one who loved you first, yet you seem to love her more than me.
You broke me.
THE DAY AFTER.
It's nearly nine o'clock in the morning, and Shan is nowhere to be found in the classroom. I rolled my eyes, thinking he is having a wonderful time with the girl he is courting.
Shan likes a girl named Julianna Garcia, who goes by the nickname Julie (short for Julianna). If I remember correctly, she's a transfer student in 11th grade.
I went outside and down to the gate to cross over to the Campus's Main Building. When I entered the building, I ran across Patricia, my girl's closest friend.
"Patty! Pat!" I called, and she recognized me right away, so she came.
"Ciar, it's you. What's the matter? Is Sir Justine already in the room? Isn't he the next instructor?" she asked as soon as she spotted me.
I smiled and replied, "It's only that I can't see Shan right now. He'd have gone to the other building."
Our school buildings are so huge that if you don't know where to find them, you'll get lost. As I previously stated, I am in the Main Building, but I must still cross the Main Highway to reach the Senior High Building, which also contains the PE Hall and Gymnasium. There is a shortcut someplace in the Main Building where I can travel through the school overpass and avoid having to cross the highway and a busy road.
Shan must be there hanging out with Julie again, I reasoned. I'm not sure why, but I'm jealous. Aside from he is my best friend, whom I love, the world appears to be incredibly unfair. I've known him for a long time, although he met Julie for a short time.
"Let it go, please. Don't be jealous. I'm confident that your loverboy will notice you fairly soon," she remarked sarcastically, and she made me laugh and when suddenly, groups of cheerleaders and some jocks were hanging out in the waiting shed, and I could just hear them talking.
"Did you see the latest cheerleading practice video?"
"Yeah! Julie, our Head Cheerleader, nailed it with the pyramid!"
"Come to think of it, she's only sixteen, I think."
"As a result, our dearest Shan fell head over heels in love with her."
"By the way, where is he? I haven't seen him, and Julie too."
"I guess Julie and he went on a date, but I'm not sure where. Perhaps they're dating in some sense."
He's only hanging out with Julie now? That's fine; I'm not bitter, but I'm used to him calling and informing me of his whereabouts.
Okay, then I turned to Patricia and motioned for us to leave, "Pat, let's go. Shan somehow doesn't seem to be around at this time."
She said as we were walking to our building, "Don't worry. Shan loves you, as I predicted."
I let out a groan, "But, Pat, I'm not in the mood to wait. He'll never be able to see me."
"Don't be pessimistic. Shan loves you. You know, he's just caught up with her because of their fame."
We arrived in the room as well, but our Conceptual Framework instructor, Sir Justine, has not yet arrived. We sat down right away and continued our conversation.
"That's it; they're well-liked. I mean, who am I? I'm just an ordinary student here," I admitted with a sigh, "but I still love my best friend."
"Trust me, he loves you too."
"Hey, what are you up to over there?" As I realized it was Shan, I turned away. "Are you talking about the guy who you were referring to in your poem the other day?"
I rolled my eyes because I had only recently realized Shan was numb, but I still managed to grin at him, "Why?"
"No matter what happens, I'll always be by your side," he said while patting my shoulders with his palms. I'm not sure what it was, but his touch made me feel something. I'm electrified in a way that I can't explain.
However, I was dissatisfied. Why can't he sense that he's the man I want and the one I genuinely love? He has been my ultimate crush from elementary school through high school.
Who wouldn't want to love Shan Ralph Anderson? Take a look at him: he's famous, hot, and gentlemanly. He treated me like a princess, which was one of the things I admired about him. He's always there for me when I'm in trouble.
We've become inseparable, and because we're neighbors, we see each other frequently, especially when we're with his wonderful aunt, Faith. Faith is his father's only sibling, and with her wise remarks, she's like an angel in disguise for me.
"Best," he said, and I turned to face him, surprised to see that his face was an inch away from mine as if we were about to kiss in our position until Sir Justine entered the room.
"Students, good morning! Sorry for being late, and please don't think we're staying at the motel, Ms. Jones and Mr. Anderson. As can be seen, this is a school, a place for learning."
"Sorry, sir," I said sheepishly to our instructor.
"Please take a seat, Shan," the teacher said something, and Shan sat down next to me, and Sir Justine began talking about something else.
I looked at my watch as the lesson ended, and it was already past noon, and we hadn't eaten lunch yet, "Pat, let's go grab lunch. Shan, how about you? Will you come to lunch with us?" I asked him.
He said with a nod, "Yes, but do you mind if we pass by Julie's? I think she will eat at the cafeteria as well. I'll just check on her."
"Sure, no problem," I say like if I had a choice. We exited the room after I gathered my stuff.
We returned to the Main Building heading to the Cafeteria and I noted that a large number of people had already gathered, at least it was past noon, and everyone was already eating their lunch.
We walked into the air-conditioned café and Shan and I just followed the famous students to a large table where they were all seated. "Shan!" I saw Julie wave at him.
"Hey, fellas!" They greeted Shan, while I stood in the back and went unseen. Who am I, after all, for them to recognize? I'm just his best friend.
"What's the matter with you now that you're alone?" she said as she saw me behind, "Oh, you have someone with you."
Finally, I rolled my eyes, and you noticed me as well.
"This is Ciara, my best friend ever," Shan said as he wrapped his arm around me and lovingly stroked my hair.
"I had no idea you had a best friend," a senior high cheerleader said.
"I thought you were aware of that one. Since we were kids, she's been my best friend," Shan responded, and I couldn't help but give them a big smile. "Anyway, I'm just checking in on you guys."
"You mean, Julie is the one you checked here," the others taunted.
"Yes, boss. We all know you don't give a damn about us," One of our Senior basketball players expressed his thoughts.
They continued to converse, so I turned to Shan and said, "I'm going to order food," and he turned around.
"I'll go with you." He bid goodbye to his men. We formed a line at a stand in the café where my favorite dish, sisig, is served.
"Aren't you fed up with sisig? You might gain weight and become chubby," I slapped him in the shoulder after he laughed playfully.
"You're a complete jerk! I'll tell your mother about this," I added with a giggle.
"You're so weak, and you're going to report me," he laughed, "and if you do it, I'll report about your crush to your mother."
I came to a halt there, but I was still able to speak, "Why? Do you have any idea who my crush is?"
"No, that's why I want to know and figure out who he is," he said.
I pressed my fingers to his cheeks, "That is a secret. I'm not going to tell you who he is."
"As for your kindness, I'll still know him, but for the time being, I'm not going to put any pressure on you."
I smirked, "It's for you to find out."
We proceeded to our normal area near the garden as soon as we got our food. Even though I like the air-conditioned room, there are no vacancies due to a large number of famous students and senior high school students, as well as the cheerleaders.
We couldn't stop talking three as we ate, "Shan, where's Faith?"
"It seems they're in the laboratory right now," he remarked as he chewed his lunch. "You know, our nurse is busy."
Faith and I attend the same school and occasionally meet, but now that she is in her second year, they are quite busy.
"Of course," I replied when I realized what had happened. "Where were you earlier? I was expecting you wouldn't show up Sir Justine's class."
"Didn't I tell you?" I shook my head and he looked at his phone, "Ah, I didn't press send."
"What should you say?"
"I would say that I was with Julie at their house," just as I thought and he continued, "She took something there and I went with her. I didn't see her mommy, but I just learned that she was also a cheerleader at Agusan High where Mom and Dad used to study. Not just a cheerleader but a head cheerleader. "
"Didn't your mom was also a cheerleader back then?"
"Yes, that's what she said but she only said that she cheered in Davao. It looks like she was just a substitute cheerleader at Agusan High when she moved here to Butuan."
I nodded, "That's right. All right, hurry up and eat there and we'll still have class. After three PM, do you have some plans?"
He nodded, "Yes, I'll be with Julie that time."
I didn't answer and I just finished what I ate and put away the things afterward.
Ciara's POVI'm inside my room while searching on the internet for our Case Study for Management Science subject. Our house isn't that huge, it's just okay for the three of us and with a nanny.Even though our home is modest, it is nonetheless extremely quiet. My parents don't have time for me because they are preoccupied with work. They just go about their business and can't even say hello to me. In other words, zero. There's a knock on my bedroom door as I'm typing something. I leaped to my feet and dashed over, expecting to see mom or dad, but when I opened the door, it was just my nanny."It's you, nanny. I thought it was my parents,"I said and was disappointed because I thought they cared about me now."Oh, no. Shan is downstairs n
Ciara's POV"Ciara will come later to our dinner with our family at Derek's place,"Faith stated as she swallowed her food,"She was invited by John.""Oh, that's fantastic.""Just for me,"Faith suggested,"what if you bring Julie as well? That way your parents would know about her, right? They need to know."I had a look at them.Shan was staring at Julie as if their eyes were speaking to one other."Hmm,"he says, as though he doesn't want to invite her or introduce her."I'm good about
Ciara's POV We enjoyed our dinner tonight as Mr. Anderson led the prayer. We are happy chatting and eating and at the same time, Shan's phone rang, he excused himself by taking his phone. I just kept eating since I knew his girlfriend was calling again."Maybe it's his girlfriend again,"Faith murmured. "What? Girlfriend?"Mr. Anderson asked, and Faith simply nodded. "Yeah, I met his girlfriend only a few moments earlier." Shan's mother just laughed and added,"That's what he's saying about the girl
Ciara's POVHow can I forget how Patricia Lim and I became friends? We have been friends since we're still in 9th grade until now that we are currently in college. I recalled how we encountered and became friends.Patricia and I were classmates for the first time at the time, and believe me when I say that everyone in the room became my friends, but she's the one I could never approach. We once partnered on a project and activities as a pair. Shan and I must have been partners at the time in case our Teacher became too upset and split the two of us.I don't have a choice; I'm stuck with a person who's not my favorite. I dislike her since she's the only classmate with whom I don't get along and with whom I don't share the same vibes. As a result, I discovered why she refused to tal
Shan's POVI decided to just stroll towards Jollibee because Ciara stated that was where they were going and I want to meet Patrick, their new friend. As soon as I walked in, my eyes caught sight of Patricia, who was waiting in line, so I approached her, and she seemed surprised to see me,"Oh, you're here. Did Ciara inform you that we'd be here?""Yes. Is it okay for me to join you because there is no class and it's quite boring?""Of course!"She exclaimed, laughing."It's quite awkward that you're with someone."&
Ciara's POVJust as time with our cute session with Shan, Uncle Derek appeared, carrying the supper he had ordered for us."It's here. Have a good time with your dinner, kids,"he placed down all the food we wanted and leans closer to me,"Enjoy your date,"he whispered to me after. My Uncle bolted before I could even hit him. When Shan noticed my gloomy look, he burst out laughing,"What's that expression on your face, best friend? HAHAHAHAHAHA. What did he say to you?""It's nothing,"I said as I gathered up the utensils,"he simply enjoys teasing me."He simply shook his head me a tray of my favorite dishes. We're just eating our meal,
Shan's POV I let out a gasp. What was the point of that?! Are they attempting to keep me out of their lives? Worst of all, even my best friend is losing interest in me! Ciara picked them over me, and I can't quite believe it. If Patrick hadn't captured her, it would never have happened between us! I wouldn't be upset any longer because Ciara and I have already discussed everything, but why do I have the feeling that she is drifting away from me? I don't know what I've done to her. I sighed and walked away. I have no idea where Patrick took my friends. I haven't been able to locate my girlfriend because she is also busy. Julie has been busy these past few days, as I've notice
Ciara's POVPatrick and I just sat on the nice sand while watching the view on the beach. The place is so peaceful and it helps me erase the bad vibes towards Julie."I don't think I'll be able to return here again," I said, staring at him who was also looking at me, "My family has no nice trips and vacations.""How did you come to that conclusion?"He asked."Since I was a child, I've felt as if I didn't have parents because they were always preoccupied with work. Shan is the only one who takes me to places like this."
Ciara's POV“So, is the JPIA not happening anymore?” I asked my bandmates. We gathered at the Accountancy Office because of Kuya Jay's announcement, and he indeed said that the JPIA convention would no longer push through.“Well, it will still happen,” Kuya Jay replied, “but the schedule is in complete disarray. The school heads and Father are already frustrated, so our school will withdraw.”“But guys, your payment won’t go to waste,” said Ate Angeline, one of the treasurers on the JPIA committee board. She took a box and handed it to us, “These are the freebies for the convention plus a five-hundred-peso refund.”After distributing the freebies, we all went out together, and Kuya Jay spoke, “What now, guys? It looks like it really won’t push through.”“Yeah,” agreed Kuya Josh with a smile, “but thank you for the time you dedicated to the band.”Kuya Jay looked my way and put his arm around me, “What about you, Ciara? Next week is our exam, and after that, you’re leaving, right?”I n
Ciara's POVAfter our last class, my friends and I left together when I noticed Zam standing outside in the hallway, seemingly waiting for me.I turned to Patrick and Patricia and said, "You go ahead; we need to talk," and they nodded and left.I looked at Zam again and saw him smile at me. "Uhh, Ciara, can we talk?""Sure. Let's go to the milk tea shop so we can talk properly," I said, and he nodded as we headed downstairs together.I saw the twins, Angelo and Rafael, at the gate. I waved at them, signaling that I wouldn't be joining them.We entered the milk tea shop and ordered our drinks. The staff quickly prepared our drinks, and we proceeded to sit in a corner. Before I could speak, he held my hands and said, "Ciara, I am so sorry for everything. I'm sorry for being mean to you."Seeing his eyes well up, I couldn't help but feel sorry and sad. Zam and I weren't particularly close, but I was becoming emotional. Maybe it's because we’re blood-related, and more so because he's my h
Ciara's POVA week has passed, and I haven't talked to anyone at school, not even at home. Even though Shan and I are neighbors, I haven't spoken to him or met up with him.I know he comes to our house every night, but I don't come out. At school, I don't talk to anyone except Patrick and Patricia. They are the only ones I always talk to, and I am very thankful to Patrick for being there for me, especially during times when I needed a friend and companion. My friends often remind me about my family, but I'm not yet ready to face them, or I'm unsure of how to approach them. Sometimes, I feel like I'm being too dramatic by not talking to my parents.I glanced at Patricia, who was eating and staring at me. "Should I talk to my parents now?"She nodded. "Yes, Ciara. One week is enough time for you to think things through.""Yeah," Patrick agreed. "No matter how angry you are with them, they are still your parents. Yes, they make a lot of mistakes. Nobody is perfect; no family is perfect.
Ciara's POVWe had just arrived at Camella Homes when I suddenly asked Patrick to stop. "Pat, I don't want to go home yet. Please let's go to the playground," I noticed it was nearly nine in the evening. It would be fine even if Patrick left me alone, since I felt safe there."Sure. I'll stay with you, okay?" he replied. I nodded, and he sped off towards the playground.I got off, immediately ran to the park's swings, and sat down. I looked up and saw that it was already a bit cloudy. Good timing; the night will keep me company.Patrick sat next to me and handed me a bag full of milk tea and a hotdog burger. I accepted them and started eating, letting out a sigh.I looked into Patrick's eyes and stared at him. "Pat, why do I always end up hurt?""Ciara, everyone goes through that process," he said. "Everyone has their own struggles, though the ways they handle them might be different.""That's confusing," I said, rolling my eyes. "How could my dad do that?""Maybe it's because he's fri
Ciara's POV"No way," was all I could say. So, her suspicions are true. My mom's suspicions about him were true and accurate."Patrick, hey. We have to go. I don't seem to want to eat here," I said coldly, still my eyes glued at the two of them.I can't believe my father is cheating on my mom! How can he do this to us?!Patrick's face was full of surprise, "W-why? I just want to -""Please," I looked at him, coldly, "can we just go to Uncle Derek's place?""Why? It something wrong? This place is -""JUST, PLEASE! LISTEN FOR ONCE! I DON'T WANT TO BE HERE!" I screamed and I just realized the scene I had just made."Ciara? Darling?" I heard my dad called me. I turned to them and there I saw the face of the woman. I don't know her at all, but her face has registered to me.I turned to Patrick, "I said, let's go. Look at that!""S-sorry. Come on," he said but my dad already got up his feet so I quickly turned back.I quickly stormed off but I felt daddy chasing after me, "Ciara! Please,
Ciara's POVWe ordered some food and went to the seat chosen by them, "Take a seat, Jane. You're very welcome here." Jane was not new to them since they already knew and met Jane a couple of times when we used to hang out at Shan's place and they got to know Jane about her bungling and her intense knowledge and wisdom at a young age."Hey! So, how are your studies, fellow friends?" Jane asked the four of them and I can see that they groaned."Awful.""Stressed.""Tiring.""Haggard."Jane looked at me full of astonishment and turned to them again, "Why is it tiring and stressful? I mean, look at me. I am a student also and I always look fresh when I study and read some lessons. It's not hard."Patrick stared at her with his jaws dropped, "You are such a nerdy, Jane. Probably! You're still on what? Grade one? You haven't even reached subtraction and multiplication yet, so you can say that it's not hard," Patrick said."Oh, it's just the beginning, Jane. You still have a long way ahead
Ciara's POVWe walked and crossed the national highway until we reached the milk tea shop.We went in and Patrick immediately ordered. I immediately took my book on cost accounting and read it."Seriously, study right away Rose, ah? Just chill first and let's just talk about your life,"Patrick said. I looked at him and sighed,"It's that, you've been studying that for almost a week. You've probably memorized the weighted average formula."I laughed,"You're right, Patrick,"I closed the book and put it back in my bag,"Oh, what are we going to talk about?""As for you and Shan,"Patrick sat up,"what's the real score on them? Zam's only been like that for a month."I looked him
Ciara's POVShan immediately separated from me and I could see the annoyance on the face he was holding back. I laughed at her and looked at Jane who was standing in the doorway staring at us,"Hi, Jane! Come on."She rolled her eyes,"There you two are again. Please, I'm not used to seeing you two like that.""Hey, Jane. As much as you know but you're young. Go out and go inside your room,"Shan scolded but instead, she entered Shan's room."I will just stay here, bro. The best thing is let's just watch a movie. It can prevent on what you're planning to do here,"he said and she grinned. Jane is very mature to think even though she is only in grade one. Uncle John even said that she was just like his sister, Faith when she was young.
Ciara's POV"At this time since the first day of school, why don't we introduce ourselves first? It's like I can get to know you all and I won't have a hard time getting to know you when we have oral recitations."I groaned. Why introduce more? What are we? High school? We are college students but we are still considered children because of that introduction!I looked around and never knew all my future classmates. Not everyone here is also my classmate in all subjects because it is only a minor subject and many irregular students are also included.Everyone starts to introduce and thankfully they started in the front row, which means we still have a long way to go.I noticed that other graduating students were also included in our subject, others were also a year ahead of us. See? Do you think we need to introduce more?
