I sat there in shock, staring at Violet. Waiting for her to tell me that this was some sort of a sick joke or something. But the joke never came. I knew that she was serious. I climbed out of bed, even though I was still shaky on my feet, and Lucas had to stabilize me. “Meadow. I stood there staring at the elders as they looked so sure of themselves. I leaned against the door, staring at each and every one of them. I called the coroner immediately and he allowed me to go and view the bodies at the morgue. Lucas obviously wouldn’t let me go there alone so he drove me and we walked in the back entrance of the hospital. I was hoping that I wouldn’t have to come back to this place any time soon, but things always happen that you don’t expect. The coroner Astrid was waiting for us and both of the bodies were laid out with sheets over them. I took the sheet off of Jillian first because I knew that it would be the easiest for me to see. I had no emotional attachment to her at all. The body was really torn up and I inspected it very carefully using a magnifying glass. “Vampires have learnt to disguise their kills to make it look like animals have attacked them.” Lucas said. “I know. I called Arlo to the packhouse immediately and he found me in the office. “What’s going on?” He asked. “I have a private informant. Dad didn’t even know about this one. The vampires attacked in unison and they were definitely well trained for this. Something else I had never seen or heard of before. But we were just as well trained. If not, better. Because we train for this our whole lives. We all collided with a thunderous crash, with me right in the middle of the fighting and I grabbed one vampire that was attacking another wolf and I gripped it around the neck and shook my head vigorously until its head detached from its body and then threw it away in the distance. I felt something sharp stick into my back that I let out a roar, but before I could get the vampire off of me another warrior had already grabbed it and killed it. I could tell right then that they were all watching out for me, as well as themselves. But also each other. Just like they had been trained. They were a pack. It was a long and painful night trying to contact my uncles, but there was no answer. Not until just after dawn the following morning when I was alerted by some people approaching the pack. I ran through the woods to the border, where the main road into the pack was and I saw Uncle Ethan with a lot of people following him. I ran over the border until I reached them and I hugged Ethan as soon as I saw them. “I’ve been trying to call you all night.” I said. “We had to get out of there. They attacked out of nowhere.” He said. “I know they did. They used a diversion to keep me from helping.” I said. “What? They attacked here too?” He asked. “Yeah. But we were ready. We only lost 13.” I said. “We had no warning. We didn’t know. I’ve only got 310 people left out of my pack. That’s all I could get out.” He said. “It was a slaughter.” I said. “Yeah. Whatever was left of the army once Lacy was dead, were taken care of pretty easily afterwards. Once she was dead and they had no one organizing them or helping them attack certain places, then they didn’t know what to do. And they were done for. So we were able to return to the pack with our heads held high. We only had two casualties, and in war, that’s not a bad number. But it is bad in our books. We didn’t want to lose any. 5 YEARS LATER We had finally connected the two packs on new land that we had bought and built on. There was plenty of room for everyone. It took us all day to get to where we were going and we couldn’t risk being seen that night, so we stayed at the next town over. But we left before the sun had even risen the next morning.We got to the house where the vampires were held up and we made sure that we were back far enough, just in case they could sense us inside.We needed to stay back for a long time, to give them a chance to go to sleep. Aria, Jason and I all got up from the table and followed them outside. Lucas had thrown David down the stairs and he was standing over him on the lawn out the front of the packhouse, giving him one hell of a beating. “The only reason you are my Beta is because you were born into the role. I could very easily give it to someone else but I believed that you deserved a fucking chance. I don’t believe that anymore. I believe that you need to prove to me that you deserve to be Beta, otherwise you won’t be anymore. I can think of several good men that I can put in your position. I spent the rest of the day putting together the appropriate teams to go after each nest. After looking at what David did, I could see that he had just thown teams together. And that was going to get them all killed. We needed a leader, a second in command and strong warriors to fight these battles. But some of the people that he had in these teams were definitely going to get themselves killed. I wasn’t sending them at all. They could stay back with the larger group of warriors and protect the pack. They had a better chance of survival that way. Jason was brought to the packhouse and we explained the situation to him and he was more than willing to try for a leadership role in this new mission that we were planning. Lucas and I took him down to the training field and there were a group of warriors already waiting there. We gave them a task to do and we needed to see if Jason could get them out of it with leadership skills. They took off to the woods where a whole scene was set up and where they would be attacked by other wolves waiting for them, ready to attack. They needed to follow the path, ward off the attacks and come up with new and inventive ways of doing it. This was Jason’s big test and we stayed back at the training field waiting for them.
