I stared at the photo of my mother and then looked at Lucas. I couldn’t stop thinking about that dream that I had of her as well. But then I shook it off. “This is crazy. I called Arlo to the packhouse immediately and he found me in the office. “What’s going on?” He asked. “I have a private informant. Dad didn’t even know about this one. I’ve just been told that we’re going to be attacked tonight. Two hours after sunset by some pretty heavy hitters.” I said. “Vanessa?” He asked. “No. She was just here to taunt us. These ones are here to hurt us.” I said. “Alright. We have to get the warriors prepared. The vampires attacked in unison and they were definitely well trained for this. Something else I had never seen or heard of before. But we were just as well trained. If not, better. Because we train for this our whole lives. We all collided with a thunderous crash, with me right in the middle of the fighting and I grabbed one vampire that was attacking another wolf and I gripped it around the neck and shook my head vigorously until its head detached from its body and then threw it away in the distance. I felt something sharp stick into my back that I let out a roar, but before I could get the vampire off of me another warrior had already grabbed it and killed it. I could tell right then that they were all watching out for me, as well as themselves. But also each other. Just like they had been trained. They were a pack. It was a long and painful night trying to contact my uncles, but there was no answer. Not until just after dawn the following morning when I was alerted by some people approaching the pack. I ran through the woods to the border, where the main road into the pack was and I saw Uncle Ethan with a lot of people following him. I ran over the border until I reached them and I hugged Ethan as soon as I saw them. “I’ve been trying to call you all night.” I said. “We had to get out of there. They attacked out of nowhere.” He said. “I know they did. They used a diversion to keep me from helping.” I said. “What? They attacked here too?” He asked. “Yeah. But we were ready. We only lost 13.” I said. “We had no warning. We didn’t know. I’ve only got 310 people left out of my pack. That’s all I could get out.” He said. “It was a slaughter.” I said. “Yeah. By the following morning the news of their destroyed packs had hit the news. The humans thought that they were other human towns, not knowing that they were wolf packs. Saying that again, they were all wiped out. And I saw that the packs had been left to rubble. The packhouses had been burnt to the grounds, houses and businesses were completely destroyed. They vampires really did go on a rampage. I was in my office watching the news when I couldn’t watch it anymore. I was doing more work on the computer and one of the omega’s finally bought me a book that contained the information of all the refugees that I was going to input into the computer. So I could keep track of them. Charles and his family had been keeping to themselves since he saw that my pack wasn’t going to accept him as their Alpha. He was like a child sulking because he didn’t get his own way. But I was fine with that. I was glad that I didn’t have to see him that much because he pissed me off at the best of times.

Whatever was left of the army once Lacy was dead, were taken care of pretty easily afterwards. Once she was dead and they had no one organizing them or helping them attack certain places, then they didn’t know what to do. And they were done for. So we were able to return to the pack with our heads held high. We only had two casualties, and in war, that’s not a bad number. But it is bad in our books. It took us all day to get to where we were going and we couldn’t risk being seen that night, so we stayed at the next town over. But we left before the sun had even risen the next morning.We got to the house where the vampires were held up and we made sure that we were back far enough, just in case they could sense us inside.We needed to stay back for a long time, to give them a chance to go to sleep. Lucas had thrown David down the stairs and he was standing over him on the lawn out the front of the packhouse, giving him one hell of a beating. “The only reason you are my Beta is because you were born into the role. I could very easily give it to someone else but I believed that you deserved a fucking chance. I don’t believe that anymore. I believe that you need to prove to me that you deserve to be Beta, otherwise you won’t be anymore. I can think of several good men that I can put in your position. I spent the rest of the day putting together the appropriate teams to go after each nest. After looking at what David did, I could see that he had just thown teams together. And that was going to get them all killed. We needed a leader, a second in command and strong warriors to fight these battles. They could stay back with the larger group of warriors and protect the pack. They had a better chance of survival that way. Jason was brought to the packhouse and we explained the situation to him and he was more than willing to try for a leadership role in this new mission that we were planning. Lucas and I took him down to the training field and there were a group of warriors already waiting there. We gave them a task to do and we needed to see if Jason could get them out of it with leadership skills. They took off to the woods where a whole scene was set up and where they would be attacked by other wolves waiting for them, ready to attack. They needed to follow the path, ward off the attacks and come up with new and inventive ways of doing it. This was Jason’s big test and we stayed back at the training field waiting for them.
