VANESSA POV HARSH LANGUAGE

We have been pricked, poked, and examined for two days. I can not get over how thorough they have been about my blood. It took them four checks to finally believe what I told them in the first place. But for the most part, the exams haven't bothered me......it's what these people are that bothers me.

For one, they sell people. That is a given reason not to like them. But for two, they aren't normal humans. They are something else. They are strong. They are cold. And they are vampires! How do I know.......they didn't check my blood by using a machine; oh no, they checked it by pouring the samples down their nasty throats!

But at least they hold to their word. Mr. Leader had informed the exam people of my bargain, and everyone had agreed. They even became excited after my blood type was confirmed. Rosy was literally tied to my wrist after that.

About an hour ago, they stripped us of our remaining clothes, so I am assuming; however, they sell us...... it is about to happen. After stripping us, they had separated us. But there wasn't a noticeable characteristic as to how they chose our groups.

All different hair colors were placed together and all different heights. All of the girls here range from size 2 to probably about size 8. So there aren't considerable differences in our bodies. Some have bigger breasts, and some have very small, but again the groups weren't organized, but that factor either.

I am the tallest out of the girls here. The blonde Rosy and I are with is about 5'5".

We have watched group after group of girls disappear up a small flight of stairs, and only one more group is in front of us.

"Nessa, what do you think they will do with us," Rosy whispers for the tenth time.

"I don't know, Rosy, but I think they will drink our blood. It seems to be something they are obsessed with. But I think they decided I am tastier," I say as a lame attempt to break the tension in the room.

Rosy's eyes go wide, and I sigh. She has been like this since we got here. Panicky. She has asked me question after question as if I somehow know the answers. It has been frustrating, but at the same time, it hasn't. If I can provide her with some calm, then I am happy. Rosy has been my warm ball of sunshine for so many years, and it is only right that it is my turn to return the favor.

"Rosalind, I don't know what happens next. But at least we are together," I say with a smile, and she links our fingers together in return.

"I love you, Vanessa," Rosy whispers as we watch the girls in front of us disappear.

"I love you too," I say with a hitch in my voice.

When a man gestures for us to move forward, Rosy sinks into my side. I place a hard mask on my face. I don't want my terror on display for the filth we are about to see. What honorable man has to buy girls? Sick!

******

We are led onto a small stage. Many of the vampires who have been with us for the past 48hrs are on stage as well. They look like they are keeping notes. They are positioned behind us, and we are facing an intimidating crowd. The lights are low so that I can see the swine in front of us. And let me say, they are massive.

More than half the men in front of us are huge. Bigger than anyone I have ever seen. They all look like they bodybuild for a living. The other thing they have in common is their facial expressions; they are excited. Bile clogs my throat at the looks on their faces. Some are even licking their lips while staring at me.

As much as I want to, I don't shrink away from their gazes. I stare them down with as much disgust and hate as I can if this is my final stand. If, after this, I am drained of every drop of my blood, I want to go out fighting.

"Aren't they beautiful? Let's begin with the single at $50,000," the nice dressed vampire with the microphone says.

Men in the crowd slightly lift their hands over and over again before the blonde is led from the stage. The vampire with the mic says a Lord Duggins purchased her for $310,000, and my eyes almost pop out of their sockets. How do they have that much money to spend on people to drink?

The vampire approaches us, and I hold Rosy tighter. He sends me a smirk before addressing the crowd again.

"Now for the special prize tonight, we will begin at $100,000, and each bid will be $20,000. Let's begin, gentlemen," he calls, and hands begin to raise for us all over the room.

I want to sneer at the use of the word gentlemen. These men are obviously anything but. They are sending each other glares and looking downright menacing. But none compare to the huge scary man on the right. He is eyeing me like I am a steak, and he hasn't eaten in fifty years.

My eyes widen as he seems to grow with frustration. He and one other man are battling it out for us. And something tells me I do not want the hungry man to win us. He looks like the type to bathe in someone's blood after murdering them. He has tattoos everywhere. His hair is long and wild-looking, but it's his blazing eyes that scare me the most. They are shifting in color, and trust me, if looks could kill....... his opponent would be six feet under.

Much to my horror, he stands up and roars at the other bidding man. The whole room seems to cower back from his animalistic display, as do we. The vampire holding the mic trembles. As he gestures for us to be led away.

"The final prize goes to Alpha Gunnar for $780,000. That concludes our sale this evening. Please feel free to mingle and enjoy the refreshments," the vampire says while trying to find his voice.

My eyebrows furrow at the titles these men have. What is the difference between a Lord and an Alpha? Whatever the difference is, I think I would have wanted a lord to buy us.

Rosy is shaking as we stumble down the steps. And I am seconds away from breaking down myself. What happens now?

GUNNAR POV

My body shakes as the bastard finally realizes she is going to be mine, no matter what. Kraven is clutching his seat in fear as he stares at me, which doesn't surprise me. I haven't had to use my full Alpha power in years, but tonight, it was needed. The old vampire had wanted my mate. He had wanted to feed from her defiant slender neck that should only ever have my teeth in it.

I shake the thought from my head and close my eyes. I can not think of marking her. She would never be strong enough to be a wolf. And I need a wolf as my Luna. And the only way for her to be a wolf would be to go through the change. I would have to mark her while releasing the werewolf disease. She would be a changed wolf, not natural, forever less.. BECAUSE SHE IS HUMAN.

I take deep breathes as I retract my overwhelming dominance from the room. If Kraven didn't have suspensions before, he does now. I just dropped a considerable amount of money on a human, a species he knows I detest.

"Forgive me, Alpha Gunnar, what are your instructions for your female purchases this evening," a small voice asks, and I open my eyes.

A small vampire is bowed in front of me, visibly shaking.

"Have a car drive all my purchases and my Beta to my hotel. I will need to see my purchase's papers immediately," I say, and the vampire bows deeper before scurrying away.

"What the fuck was that," Kraven whispers, finally standing to his feet.

"That human........ that trash, is my mate," I growl so low that even Kraven leans in.

His eyes widen as he takes in my words. Never in our history has a human been a nature-given mate. Weak wolves have mated and left pack life for a human, but it is rare. Most of the time, they are the wolves like me. They are almost thirty and desperate.

"No. There is no way, brother. No human has ever been a true mate. Are you sure," Kraven frantically whispers, and I growl.

The only way to confirm what my body already knows is to touch her. To feel the tingles, the bond, for the first time. Every instinct in my body is craving it, but my mind is holding myself in check. She can't be the Luna of my pack. My wolves would never stand for it, and neither will I.

I turn and walk away, leaving my brother standing there with his mouth open. I need her file. I need to see how this is possible.

I slam open the door to the records room, and all but one head bows. Lord Hugh meets my cold stare with one of his own, and a growl rumbles in my chest. I hate this particular Lord with a passion. He likes the taste of wolf blood as well as humans.

"Alpha Gunnar, how may I assist you," he asks, folding his hard hands.

"I want the files on my purchases immediately," I order in a deep voice that conveys my intentions if my demand is not met.

"Of course. I was surprised you purchased my slaves, you know," the lord says as he waves his hand for the information.

My brain actually takes a moment to remember the male vampires that I was excited about purchasing.

"Why were you tired of them," I ask, recomposing myself.

I shouldn't be allowing the human to affect me so much. This vampire can smell weakness a mile away. That's all the little human is a weakness.

"They both disobeyed direct orders. I do not tolerate insubordinate servants. They are lucky all I did was sell them," he states while being handed six files.

"Anything I need to be concerned with," I ask, mildly concerned for what I had purchased.

"Not likely. You won't become angry if they feed on your humans, will you," he asks, handing me the requested documents.

My eyebrows furrow. I will need to get them their own feeder slaves. Why did that thought not cross my mind? But they will be able to drain anyone they want on a battlefield.

"How often does you kind feed. I might have overlooked their diets when I made the purchase," I admit to the snobby Lord.

His booming laugh fills the room, and I growl loudly. He raises his palms in the air, and I calm slightly.

"The more blood, the stronger the vampire. Those particular slaves fed once every three days. If you want them strong, they need blood daily. Not an entire human mind you. Just a glass or two," he says, looking sinister and smug about my ignorance.

"I will keep that in mind," I mumble before briskly walking out of the stuffy room.

They can keep prisoners from war. They will not feed on the maids—time to find out about my mate.

VANESSA POVI wish I had paid betterattention in school, so I knew more about the country we have been in for two days. What I do know is the place is gorgeous. Gorgeous, but cold. The cabin-like structure they have us crammed in is old. The cold air seems to have no problem creeping in. And the other girls here are not really into sharing blankets.Rosy and I have carved out a little corner as ours, though. It is near the fireplace, so hopefully, we can keep all of our toes. The two girls that we were purchased with got the only open bed. But I don't envy them. That puts them closer to the others. These girls are vicious. Their eyes have no spark, and they never smile. They look broken. Which I don't blame them. They live hard. There is no running water in our cabin or electricity. And they work from dawn to dusk. Yesterday one girl came back with a bloody nose and a ripped dress. The others hadn't even batted an eyelash.

I watch every single move his hands make as he examines her fragile body. When he goes to lift her dress, I growl. "Watch it. She got hit in the face. There is no need for that," I growl in a low voice. He pulls his eyebrows together before moving back to her head. I am breaking every norm we have ever had. The main one being, I brought a human to the doctor. Humans have never received medical attention before.. and the fact that I brought her myself....There is no doubt now; my packs knows. And my pack will not tolerate her. Finally, he straightens his back. He walks over to a small sink, and he washes her blood from his fingers. "Well," I growl hating his slow movements with every fiber of my being. "The human most likely has a concussion—nothing more Alpha. Your new merchandise will survive," he says

I nod slightly and scoot down from the medical table. My mind is still reeling from the bomb he just dropped on me.I had been wondering what the doctor and him were talking about while they behaved like I wasn't in the room. But I wasn't expecting to be told I was part animal. Part animal like the sleazeballs we had served breakfast to.I hated every single one of those idiots. VANESSA POVI keep my shoulders straight and my chin up as I watch Gunnar. The man, a werewolf that apparently was destined to be mine. What a joke!I would never be with a man like him. Yes, he is beautiful, in a scary rugged kind of way, but his personality is a zero. He is harsh and abrupt. I can tell he doesn't own a single ounce of patience, and I have only spent an hour with him.I'm glad these all-mighty beings find me unfit. And as much as I don't want to be one of them, this is Rosy, and I's only option. I will take this bite, and I will survive. I will train, and I will win our freedom."Let's go," Gunnar says as he turns back to the door.I follow him while letting my mind run. A million things are buzzing in my brain. My usual calculating mind is definitely on overdrive. After about four minutes, I stop, and he instantly stops as well."I need to find Rosy. You said I might not survive," I say, and h

  • Conflicted   Chapter 9

VANESSA POVI absently play with Rosy's hair. After crying and arguing for about twenty minutes, she had cuddled up against me and gone to sleep. We are both exhausted from trying to sleep in the cold cabin, so her tiredness doesn't surprise me. Plus, I am happy she is resting before whatever is about to happenhappens.I peel my eyes off the wall and turn my headtowards Gunnar. He is still positioned the same. Observing us from a chair in the corner. His room is so dark, it is hard to evaluate his expression thoroughly, but he looks intrigued."Alpha, what does your other form look like," I ask politely.Just like with the vampires.....you gain more with honey than vinegar. He shifts in his seat as if he is uncomfortable before his deep voice fills the silent room."Compare us to your movies. We look like the animals you refer to as Lycans. We do not look like wild wolves, as some humans may think. W

I talked about leaving him.....Rosy, remember I said I am different.... well, not only am I not fully human. But I am also his mate—a term they use for some kind of special bond. Like a soulmate," I say with my back towards her.She gasps, and I tense. I can almost hear her wheels turning as she digests my situation."So there is a chance even if we win the competition.........you might not be free," Rosy whispers, and I spin towards her."Rosy, there is no "we" if you get this bite tonight........you will die," I yell at my best friend with pleading eyes. She gives me a sad smile and raises to her feet.

His skin is tearing, black fur is sprouting everywhere, and his muscles are bulging. He slowly turns towards me, and when our eyes meet, I realize this might just be it for us.A snarl rips from deep inside his chest, and words manage to spill out before he shifts completely. HILDA POV I smile as I watch Crow move around my den. His fresh scent is beginning to saturate the air, and I like it. My den has smelled like only me for far too long. "Wow, this is unique," Crow says while running his fingers over my quilt. I nod and give him a sad smile."I made that. I used all of my first mate's shirts. I wanted to keep him close," I explain, and Crow stills. "Are you uncomfortable with me having it," I ask as I watch his reaction closely. My stomach twists with fear. I will not allow Crow to act as if my first mate didn't exist. I care for Crow, but I loved my mate. "No. I was worried you wouldn't want my scent on it," Crow admits while searching my eyes."I don't mind. I actually like the thought of your smell on it. CROW POV (R rated)She looks stunning today. If I hadn't already decided to compete, seeing her this morning would have been the nail in the coffin. Her blonde hair is down for the first time in two days, and it is beautiful. Natural blonde with soft waves......She is also dressed differently. She isn't in anything overly feminine, but the simple outfit looks sexy on her. She hasn't looked at me once, and that hurts a little. I know what I said last night broke something between us, but I hope by competing, it fixes it. I don't know what kind of relationship we can build between us, but her brother was right. My Cindy would be pissed if I spent my life sulking and missing her. She would want me to try for happiness, and I think I can have that with Hilda. She understands my pain. She is also intelligent, strong, and gorgeous. My brothers forfeit with honor, but no one else steps

  • Conflicted   Chapter 5 Hilda

HILDA POV Pain courses through me, and I curse the feeling back to hell where it came from. I have no idea why I gave myself hope. I should have known that I am doomed to be mated to a young second-born who has no idea how to lead. A male who can't place his own arrogance to the side to think about what is best for the pack. My fist connects with a tree, and the wood splits. My skin rips, but I ignore the irritating burn. Crow's stupid face is imprinted in my mind, and I can't help but picture it. His dark, almost black hair is thick and wavy. It shines and makes my hands itch to touch it. His dark eyes and thick eyebrows are expressive. They shout out his emotions, and my broken soul loves it. His nose is big and a little crooked, but the flaw makes him real; it makes the rest of him believable. I sigh as the first tear falls from my eye. For the first time in a long tim

I watch the dirt collect and move through the water by my feet-little specks, insignificant but irritating.....like our lives.I want to growl and argue with the new feelings brewing within me, but that would mean I acknowledge them. I don't know why I couldn't stop staring at Hilda today. My thoughts hadn't been anything but neutral and curious, but I never give females attention. Maybe my interest was stemming from our conversation last night. She impressed me.I shut off the water and step out. I hear the bedroom door bang open outside of the restroom, and my instincts kick in. I snatch the towel I had folded and waiting from the counter. I barely get it around my waist before I open the restroom door."Gage? What the hell? What's wrong," I ask as my eyes assess his pacing form.He seems unharmed, but some

HILDA POV Dark, handsome, smart...Crow is an admirable male. His body is in prime condition and looks as if he exercises regularly. A small smile tugs at my mouth as I scrub my scentless soup into my hair. I could see myself with a mate like Crow. A male who has loved. A man who has lost everything but kept going. I step out of my shower and dry off quickly. I don't have much of a morning routine. I'm not like other she-wolves, never have been. I like to get clean, get dressed, and be done. I don't prep and preen my face for male satisfaction. I get my old but clean undergarments on before throwing on some sweats with a matching worn-out tank top. Perfect. My phone chimes, and I open the message before pulling on my socks."Two new arrivals Alpha." I finish getting dressed before responding. "I will

CROW'S POV "I'm not interested," I growl as Ronan makes his speech about how we should compete for Silvertail's Alpha title....again. "Look, I get it, Crow. You had your mate. You met her at 18, and your life was perfect. But that ideal life ended.....I know that it is hard, but we need your help. I'm 25. Gage is 27. We need to find a mate or win a mate. If you compete with us, you can knock out some of the competition for us. You don't have to win her. Help one of us win her," Ronan pleads as Gage stands with his arms crossed. I drop my 110lb dumbbells and grab my blue sweat towel. I think over my brother's words while looking around our tiny flat. Pictures of mom and us decorate the entire space. I close my eyes as I wipe off my neck. I picture my mother and my mate's faces...they would want me to help my brothers. They both would probably tell me it is time for me to move on also

He won't stop whining, and while the change in his personality is endearing, I can not take it.He is constantly barging into my office demanding that I get my mate competition underway so he can run back home to be with a very pregnant Vanessa. He doesn't understand why I am putting it off. He doesn't understand that when I look at these males, I feel nothing but repulsion. My phone rings, and I pick it up with my eyes closed."Hilda speaking""Well, hello, sister-in-law.""Vanessa, if you are calling me to hound me about the competition as well...I will kick your ass pregnant or not.""Geez.
