Mark agreed to the divorce, even saying he’d leave with nothing as long as he could see Mia whenever he wanted.

Since I didn’t want Mia caught up in our issues, I agreed.

We set a date a month later to finalize the papers at the courthouse, and then he headed back to the hospital. However, after he left, a sense of unease settled over me.

I called my dad, but Mr. Smith answered instead, and I was suddenly at a loss for words.

Mr. Smith reassured me with a chuckle. “Anna, whatever happens, remember to trust Mr. Miller. You, of all people, know his character best.”

That was true. My father had always been the most upright person I knew.

The day I decided to study medicine, he told me he wouldn’t make things easier for me and never did. Even after I became a doctor, he never intervened.

If he hadn’t helped his own daughter, he certainly wouldn’t have offered Mark any favors without good reason.

I hung up, still restless, unable to sleep.
