Chapter Nineteen

My phone buzzed at that moment. Cursing at the fact that I hadn't left it at home, I brought it out of my coat pocket. My blood ran cold as I stared at the caller ID. With shaky hands, I received the call.

“My gold mine,” Nathan's lazy drawl filled my ears.

“You sonofabitch!” I rasped, almost stumbling. Little stones rolled over and fell down the cliff.

“Oh, you don't have to take out your anger on me, darling.” His mocking laughter irked me, and I longed to scratch at his face with my nails.

“You tricked me.” I swallowed hard, my chest heaving.

“No, no, I didn't, darling Iris. You were merely excited at the prospect of getting married to me that you didn't realize what was happening. Why blame me for your foolishness?” He sneered.

I almost choked on my words. “I loved you, Nathan. I gave you my all, and this is how you pay me?” I cried.

“This isn't a romantic soap opera, Iris, cut the crap. You were foolish. How did you ever think I'd love someone like you?”
