‘There she is with her secret smile again. What was she smiling about, anyway?’ Sebastian wondered as he looked at her expectantly. He was still prepared to persuade her with his steely eyes if she offered another excuse, but she surprised him when she acquiesced.
Clara raises her eyebrows and looks at Sebastian, ‘How are you riding with me? Did you bring your own bike, or do I need to carry you on my handlebars?’
‘I don’t think I have a spare bike, but maybe you can use Max’s bike. I think you’re almost the same height, right?’
‘I have my bike strapped to my car. I... Uhm... I brought my riding shorts. Do you mind if I change in the restroom and leave my clothes here? I can walk down with you,’ he said it like he had everything planned out. He sounded a little bit cocky, she thought.
‘Hmm.. well..,’ she was about to reply when Max butted in, opening the door halfway, ‘You’re going to a meeting after this, right? Why not use the private shower in her private bedroom? We do it all the time. She has a very good shampoo. It’s the one that rocks your senses,’ Max winks. ‘You know, instead of using the locker room downstairs,’ Max ended.
“There’s nothing wrong with the locker rooms downstairs,” she interrupted. She was grinding her teeth and clenching her fists. When she got hold of a stapler, she threw it at Max. Laughter could be heard from the other side of the door when he closes it.
He peeked back in to pick up her stapler from the floor. ‘I didn’t know your stapler could fly,’ he joked. Max was betting on their relationship, so why not help it move faster, he thought. It was time his sister got serious with someone, and maybe he was biased, but he liked that Sebastian was established, and there was no possibility of him riding on her coattails.
Her bedroom was the most magnificent addition to her office. It was added on later during the big system upgrade. They all realized they would stay over in the office more often to finish their projects on time. It was very uncomfortable for them to sleep on the sofas or on the cold floor, so they decided to cut into her office to add a bedroom and a bathroom with a shower to boot.
He could see the fire coming out of her eyes and smoke coming out of her nose, ‘pissed’ was not enough to describe what she was feeling right now. Sebastian can’t help but witness their exchange, he didn’t know what to do. He was half expecting her to decline, now that Max had pushed her buttons so much.
She wanted him to use the locker rooms downstairs. ‘Fudge. Ugh, fine, I’ll be nice. We need this contract. Letting him use my shower won’t affect me,’ she thought, trying to convince herself, ‘I won’t let it.’
Narrowing his eyes, he was ready to step in and tell her that he would do whatever she wanted to appease her when she said, ‘Fine, leave your suit here. You can use my shower too. It’s through that door,’ she pointed to a door behind her.
The door was hidden in a nice corner, right by a shelf, and he didn’t notice it until she pointed out the location. No wonder her room looked like it should have been bigger inside than it was.
It looked like a purple oasis, with the accent wall painted a dark purple. It was flanked by a floor-to-ceiling picture window on one side that made you feel as if you were outdoors. And on the other side, he saw the walk-in closet and entrance to the bathroom.
On the bed, she had a white Japanese-inspired duvet cover with dark purple sheets. It felt like a very relaxing and inviting room. It was a little girly, and it surprised him that she would let him into her private sanctuary, and he didn’t want her to change her mind.
Sebastian made his way to the bathroom, took several hangers from the closet, and hung his suit. He changed into his Bermuda shorts over his riding pants and loose-fitting, water-wicking shirt because he knew he was going to sweat a lot and didn’t want to risk giant pit stains around the woman he desired.
He hung his suit right beside her clothes and smiled. ’This looks very homey. I think I like it. This is how our stuff would look side by side.’ He wondered if he should be naughty and go through her closet to see what else might be in her drawers. But he tamped down his curiosities. Right now, she trusted him. No way he was going to break it this soon.
He was finally ready after he changed his socks and shoes.

She kept berating herself for letting Max talk her into allowing him into her room. The messages she sent him threatened his life and future children. There was no one to blame but her. She rarely falls for these things, especially when her brothers are involved, but for some reason, with Sebastian being there, she caved.
After she calmed down, she continued with her paperwork, and that’s where he found her when he came out of the bedroom. She turned her head and noticed that he looked very comfortable in his riding attire, like he belonged there, very homey.
‘I won’t lie, he’s kinda cute,’ she says to herself. Unknowingly, giving him a smile. She hurriedly turned her head around, not wanting to get caught perusing the whole package.
He still caught her smiling, and he felt elated. Whatever she was smiling about, he knew it was directed at him. ’Do you want to walk down together? I can wait for you,’ he asked.
‘No, it’s okay. I still need to change into my riding gear. I’ll meet you downstairs,’ she replied. Trying to put some distance between them.
‘Okay, I’ll bring my bike out front and wait for you down there.’ he said
She changed into her biking outfit and looked into the mirror. ‘Shit, maybe I should change. I think he might have worn the same outfit. I don’t want him to think I matched him. Agh! Never mind, who cares?’ She had no other shirts except for white ones.
She tells Eliana, her secretary, she was going biking and would be back before lunch. ‘Order lunch for yourself and 4 other people, from that sushi restaurant we like. Order our favorites, and please don’t forget to ask Max and Jeremy to join me. Tell them they can’t refuse, or they’re both fired.’
As Clara took her bike from the locker, she thought of multiple ways to get out of her promise because somewhere along the way, from her office to the lockers, she lost her courage. When she saw Sebastian outside, riding his bike around the parking lot, she knew there was no backing out. It surprised him when he saw her. ‘My girl has so many different facets to her personality. And each time she looks different and more beautiful,’ She looked so hot in her tight spandex shorts that his desire shot up, and he had to adjust his shorts to make his bulge less obvious, but making it uncomfortable to sit on his bike. He had to think about something that would keep his mind out of the gutter otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to ride with her. He was like a schoolboy, watc
Sebastian had finished showering and getting dressed when he heard someone whimpering, so he went to investigate. Clara was dreaming and thrashing around like she was fighting someone. ‘No, no.. she said, whimpering... Celine... hide... Celine…,’ tears were coming from her eyes. The minute she started whimpering, he rubbed her arms and her back, comforting her like a child, ‘Shhh.. shhh..,’ He said, ‘It’s okay…. Shhh…. It’s okay…,’ she started quieting down, and when he had his arms wrapped around her. She went back to sleep. Clara’s secretary called her brothers to come up for lunch as she laid the food on the table, but nobody was in the office, and she did not know if Clara had come back from her bike ride, so she left. Her brothers came in laughing. They were teasing each other and betting again on where they
Sebastian did not want to leave. He was making progress, Clara had been smiling freely for the past hour, and he wanted to be there for more. ‘I must admit she was kind of right when she said that a day or two here or there is not enough to know somebody, but I think it was enough for me to make small waves in this big pond. Enough to sow some seeds, and hopefully, she would grow some feelings for me.’ Reluctantly, he had to go to his meeting and cut his visit short, but he had another reason to leave. He was trying to conduct his own investigation about Clara because he knew that her brothers would never tell him anything. The news articles about her parents, Emelia and Nathan, all said they used to make it in the financial world. Nathan was the president of one of the most prestigious financial firms in the country. He had 2 daughters, Carmen and Celine. C
All these years, the Johnson siblings did their own investigations about ten-year-old girls who were kidnapped around the time Clara disappeared, searching for the article that would lead them to her family, but it always led them nowhere. They followed all kinds of leads, even went as far as visiting the people who lost them, but they always ended where they started, nowhere. It never occurred to them that the bad guys had covered up her disappearance with an angle they never thought to explore. But now, with Celine as their lead, they had something to follow. All the doors to the past suddenly opened. Clara’s parents were Nathan and Emelia Jacobs. He used to be the president of the biggest financial firm in the country. Her mom was an accountant before retiring to take care of her family. They went to the same college but did not really date until the
Celine knew her parents always get sad around this time of year. She was too young when it happened, and they expected her to forget about her sister, but she can’t, and she won’t. ‘I’m never going to forget Carmen. I still miss you. Happy birthday, sis!’ she sent a silent greeting to her sister. It was her birthday today, and she would have turned 30 if the kidnappers had only returned her to them. She had been to several therapy sessions over the years because of her nightmares, they never seemed to go away. She doesn’t have them as often now, but it intensifies around her sister’s birth month. Subconsciously, she was having survivor’s guilt. Celine felt guilty, thinking how the kidnappers should have taken them together, then she would have known what happened to h
Sebastian has been distracted the whole day. After he snooped on Clara, he couldn't think about anything else. He had gone back to the office to wait for her when she said goodbye to her father. Anticipating her to come to his office the last few hours, but she didn't. Where was she? Did she just go back to her hotel? To occupy his time, he tried to find out her room number at the "V" but they wouldn't give it to him. Waiting was driving him nuts. He couldn’t go out looking for her because he was not supposed to know she was there. So he started pacing in his office. Earlier, he texted Max and Jeremy, telling them what he witnessed. They were tight-lipped about it for a while, but when he said he wanted to help, they told him where she was staying and when she was coming back. He didn't know why they truste
Sebastian needed to sober up a little after the amount of food and beer they’d consumed. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to drive them both home. She drank a little too much because she was too nervous and needed to do something with her hands. So she kept on drinking whatever she had, which seemed to be unlimited amounts of beer. He invited her to take a seat on one of the park benches, so he could clear his head and spend more time getting to know her. They bantered about her eating habits and food choices for a while before she invited him to walk around the park instead. He was surprised, for sure, he thought he was going to get the boot for keeping her too long. That she was going to tell him this date had run its course and instruct him to take her back to her hotel. But he was glad she didn’t because they got to spend more time together.
Clara was tinier than he thought and lighter. Not that he thought she’d be heavy to carry, but having her in his arms made her seem very frail and small. Sebastian was able to get her into the front seat without her waking. She had a rough day, and he pondered whether they should go back to his house or her hotel. He picked her up at the “V” earlier and successfully got her room number, which was convenient because he knew that bringing her to his house would freak her out. It was already 10 pm, and he did not want to drive to his house, only for her to freak out and have him take her back to her hotel. Not that he wouldn’t do anything for her, but he didn’t want the day spoiled by misunderstanding. Sebastian laid Clara in the middle of the bed. Kissing her for
