Clara couldn’t stop thinking about Sebastian, from the cute way he smiled to the intense way he looked at her. She could not forget how he flirted with her the last time they were together. In the elevator, where she almost kissed him willingly, his green eyes hypnotizing her. Then inside his car, when they were sitting side by side. How she could still feel his breath, or maybe his lips when he whispered in her ear. She shuddered just thinking about it.
She spent 2 hours exercising in the pool this morning to forget about him and it surprised her when it worked. Her workout had been so invigorating that she started tackling all the paperwork on her desk like she had a deadline.
But then, as soon as he showed up in front of her, she felt doomed. Her heart skipped a beat when she looked up and saw his smiling face right there in her office.
She should have known he was up to something when she didn’t receive any messages from him this morning. Then again, she was trying to avoid him, so she had intentionally avoided looking at her phone.
Then she remembered that she was still sitting cross-legged on her chair, ‘How unladylike,’ she thought. She drops her feet to the ground, trying to slide her feet into the sandals her feet couldn’t seem to find. ‘Ugh, where are my stupid shoes?’ she thought, annoyed.
He had been texting her for the past three weeks, trying to get her to talk, but she kept ignoring him. Come to think of it, he had even threatened to come and visit her office if she didn’t write back, so that’s probably why he was here.
Sebastian chuckled when he saw what she was trying to do. She couldn’t find her shoes, and it really amused him to see her like this. Miss icy CEO was not as organized and collected as he thought she was. It was nice to learn that she had a kooky side to her; it made her more approachable.
When she heard Sebastian chuckle, she gave up looking for her shoes and finally crossed her ankles and tucked them under her chair to try and hide them.
‘Why are you here? Is there a problem with the system? These bozos can help you with that. I have no time right now,’ she said dismissively, pretending to go back to her papers.
Sebastian replied, ‘Oh, I had a meeting with someone at the Embarcadero yesterday and thought I’d drop by to see you guys. Say hi,’ he looked at her intensely. His eyes seemed to say, I missed you.
‘I remembered you cycled, so I was going to invite you to show me the trail near your area. It looked very scenic. I remember Max saying it circled a lake, and your social media was full of them, so I wanted to experience it firsthand. Will you give me a tour?’ he asked boldly.
Max and Jeremy kept texting each other. Their phones were buzzing constantly, and it was starting to annoy Clara. They were betting on her again. Jeremy said she would say yes. Max said, not right away, but she would after a while.
‘Okay, so we’re betting on her first reaction, right?’ Max sent.
She glances up from her paper, looking into his piercing brown eyes, and says, ‘No, I’m busy right now. Max or Jeremy can take you,’ then stares both her brothers down because she knows what they were doing. Max won this round.
‘You idiots, stop betting on me,’ Clara texts both of them. They bet on whether she was going to say yes or no again. They knew Sebastian did not look like a man who took no for an answer. Max said he was going to bet on her saying yes this time.
Sebastian raised his eyebrow and looked at her, with a hopeful look on his face. He changed his tune, maybe this time around, looking pitiful would win him brownie points. ‘Please?’ he begged. ‘I drove an hour to get here. How about a few minutes around the area? I won’t bother you after this. Scout’s honor!’
Max knew he had the upper hand and an ace up his sleeve. ‘You have nothing on your calendar until after lunch. I checked.’
‘Why don’t you show him around, you know, to establish a relationship, so he could sign the contract for his office and shipping vessels early?’ Max said, winking at her, ‘After all, we need to have a good rapport with our clients, don’t we?’
‘Who told you to arrange my schedule for me?’ It irritated her that they were talking over her. She loved riding her bike around the lake, and she would have said yes anyway if these 2 were not egging her on.
She was taken aback when she looked at Sebastian, he had a very hopeful look on his face, like a puppy waiting for his treat. He pouted like a little cute kid, and she was a goner.
She raised her voice a little. ‘Fine, I’ll go with you, and you two get out of my office.
You two idiots have work to do. Why are you lounging around here, anyway? Are you getting paid to slack off? Let me give you more things to do. Finish my paperwork for me.’
Max stood up and slapped Jeremy on the back because he won twice today. ‘Okaaaay... Were leaving… have fuuuuun….,’ Max said, grinning.
Jeremy stood up and gestured for her to call if she needed anything.
He also gestured, ‘I’m watching you,’ to Sebastian, which made Clara smile. ‘He’s so sweet,’ she thought, ‘Always looking out for me.’
She tried to hide her smile from Sebastian. There was no need to make him think she was enthusiastic about doing this bike ride. ‘I’m doing it for the company and for this deal,’ she said to herself. Was she being truthful about this? Probably not, but nobody else had to know that, because for once in her life, she wanted to be selfish and see where this was headed.
‘There she is with her secret smile again. What was she smiling about, anyway?’ Sebastian wondered as he looked at her expectantly. He was still prepared to persuade her with his steely eyes if she offered another excuse, but she surprised him when she acquiesced. Clara raises her eyebrows and looks at Sebastian, ‘How are you riding with me? Did you bring your own bike, or do I need to carry you on my handlebars?’ ‘I don’t think I have a spare bike, but maybe you can use Max’s bike. I think you’re almost the same height, right?’ ‘I have my bike strapped to my car. I... Uhm... I brought my riding shorts. Do you mind if I change in the restroom and leave my clothes here? I can walk down with you,’ he said it like he had everything planned out. He sounded a littl
As Clara took her bike from the locker, she thought of multiple ways to get out of her promise because somewhere along the way, from her office to the lockers, she lost her courage. When she saw Sebastian outside, riding his bike around the parking lot, she knew there was no backing out. It surprised him when he saw her. ‘My girl has so many different facets to her personality. And each time she looks different and more beautiful,’ She looked so hot in her tight spandex shorts that his desire shot up, and he had to adjust his shorts to make his bulge less obvious, but making it uncomfortable to sit on his bike. He had to think about something that would keep his mind out of the gutter otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to ride with her. He was like a schoolboy, watc
Sebastian had finished showering and getting dressed when he heard someone whimpering, so he went to investigate. Clara was dreaming and thrashing around like she was fighting someone. ‘No, no.. she said, whimpering... Celine... hide... Celine…,’ tears were coming from her eyes. The minute she started whimpering, he rubbed her arms and her back, comforting her like a child, ‘Shhh.. shhh..,’ He said, ‘It’s okay…. Shhh…. It’s okay…,’ she started quieting down, and when he had his arms wrapped around her. She went back to sleep. Clara’s secretary called her brothers to come up for lunch as she laid the food on the table, but nobody was in the office, and she did not know if Clara had come back from her bike ride, so she left. Her brothers came in laughing. They were teasing each other and betting again on where they
Sebastian did not want to leave. He was making progress, Clara had been smiling freely for the past hour, and he wanted to be there for more. ‘I must admit she was kind of right when she said that a day or two here or there is not enough to know somebody, but I think it was enough for me to make small waves in this big pond. Enough to sow some seeds, and hopefully, she would grow some feelings for me.’ Reluctantly, he had to go to his meeting and cut his visit short, but he had another reason to leave. He was trying to conduct his own investigation about Clara because he knew that her brothers would never tell him anything. The news articles about her parents, Emelia and Nathan, all said they used to make it in the financial world. Nathan was the president of one of the most prestigious financial firms in the country. He had 2 daughters, Carmen and Celine. C
All these years, the Johnson siblings did their own investigations about ten-year-old girls who were kidnapped around the time Clara disappeared, searching for the article that would lead them to her family, but it always led them nowhere. They followed all kinds of leads, even went as far as visiting the people who lost them, but they always ended where they started, nowhere. It never occurred to them that the bad guys had covered up her disappearance with an angle they never thought to explore. But now, with Celine as their lead, they had something to follow. All the doors to the past suddenly opened. Clara’s parents were Nathan and Emelia Jacobs. He used to be the president of the biggest financial firm in the country. Her mom was an accountant before retiring to take care of her family. They went to the same college but did not really date until the
Celine knew her parents always get sad around this time of year. She was too young when it happened, and they expected her to forget about her sister, but she can’t, and she won’t. ‘I’m never going to forget Carmen. I still miss you. Happy birthday, sis!’ she sent a silent greeting to her sister. It was her birthday today, and she would have turned 30 if the kidnappers had only returned her to them. She had been to several therapy sessions over the years because of her nightmares, they never seemed to go away. She doesn’t have them as often now, but it intensifies around her sister’s birth month. Subconsciously, she was having survivor’s guilt. Celine felt guilty, thinking how the kidnappers should have taken them together, then she would have known what happened to h
Sebastian has been distracted the whole day. After he snooped on Clara, he couldn't think about anything else. He had gone back to the office to wait for her when she said goodbye to her father. Anticipating her to come to his office the last few hours, but she didn't. Where was she? Did she just go back to her hotel? To occupy his time, he tried to find out her room number at the "V" but they wouldn't give it to him. Waiting was driving him nuts. He couldn’t go out looking for her because he was not supposed to know she was there. So he started pacing in his office. Earlier, he texted Max and Jeremy, telling them what he witnessed. They were tight-lipped about it for a while, but when he said he wanted to help, they told him where she was staying and when she was coming back. He didn't know why they truste
Sebastian needed to sober up a little after the amount of food and beer they’d consumed. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to drive them both home. She drank a little too much because she was too nervous and needed to do something with her hands. So she kept on drinking whatever she had, which seemed to be unlimited amounts of beer. He invited her to take a seat on one of the park benches, so he could clear his head and spend more time getting to know her. They bantered about her eating habits and food choices for a while before she invited him to walk around the park instead. He was surprised, for sure, he thought he was going to get the boot for keeping her too long. That she was going to tell him this date had run its course and instruct him to take her back to her hotel. But he was glad she didn’t because they got to spend more time together.
