Chapter 7

RAYANA POV

Liquid shock held my lungs captive as I watched HIM walk away, shoulders and frame larger than life. Everything in my body and soul just knew that it was the beautiful intruder from last night, the same man who'd moved into my head and decided to live rent-free. His face was the replica of an angel, his body the one only possessed by gods.

It was clear to any onlooker that God took his time sculpting, modeling, and framing to be the finest specimen he was.

And the voice... I now knew who the owner of that sweet voice was, and intrigue bubbled inside me like green acid.

I wondered what his eyes looked like. Damn the bloody glasses that hid those killer jewels from me.

"I don't blame you for staring. He's hot as fuck." Charlotte's voice yanked me from my musings. Redness crept to my face and I thanked Heaven for the small blessings since my face was already red from all the crying.

I cast a look at my sister to find her staring at me, a knowing look on her face. I feigned nonchalance.

"What are you talking about? "I bunched my brows behind my Black sunglasses, knowing damn well that it wasn't going to work on her.

"The poor big stranger whom you just undressed with your eyes?" saliva caught in my throat, and I coughed a whole deal while she burst out laughing.

Her hand landed on my lower back and she started rubbing small circles.

"There, there. Such a strong reaction for someone who claims to be innocent" We stopped in our tracks for me to catch my breath. And when I did, I punched her.

"Ow, Dona! " she exclaimed holding her side. I pointed an accusing finger at her.

"You did not see anything. You hear me?" she chuckled before making a zip-motion on her mouth, then threw away the imaginary key behind her. I smile!

"Most definitely. And I sure as hell didn't see that intense look you two shared." she nodded with mock enthusiasm and once again, I blushed beet red.

"Don't let Luc hear you say that." we resumed our walking towards the castle. "Or I'll end up single"

"Oh come on Dona. It's not like you are happy with Lucas. And right now you sound desperate for a relationship that might end at any moment. We all know that you are only with him for stability. There's no love, no passion, nothing. " her words hit me like a whiplash causing me to swallow down the rising bile. She was right. And it hurt to even admit it. But the fact that my own family saw through the facade I tried so hard to keep intact hurt even more.

I swallowed hard.

“I know things don’t seem well with Luc right now, but we will eventually sort it all out. We are getting married in June, so hopefully we’ll have it all figured out.” That didn’t sound convincing to my own ears. Five months before my wedding and the mere thought of it made me want to chew a jean jacket!

Charlotte sighed out.

“It's your relationship. Only you and Luc know it better than we all ever could. All I am saying is I would hate it if my sister got stuck in a loveless marriage only because her husband was the only stable candidate available.” She added a shrug. “But I wouldn’t be surprised if that handsome stranger burst through the church doors just when you were saying your not-so-true vows of forever, swooped you off your feet, and ran into the sunset with you. You saw those tattoos peeking through the neckline of his shirt? He looks very capable of doing that.”

I leaned back as I let out a full-blown belly laughter at her silly ramblings. For the first time in the past two weeks, I laughed out genuinely.

“You’ve been reading too many novels, Charlotte.” She gave me a pearly smile. Against my better judgment, I glanced back in the direction of the parking lot, then swallowed audibly as the pictures Charlotte painted in my brain swirled in slow, motion!

~~~
We entered the house through the back door to find everyone waiting in the foyer, everyone wore a puzzled look while James explained something with the wave of his hands. We drew closer until we were in earshot.
"Couldn't you wait for tomorrow maybe? Your father's body had only been buried and you already..."
"I understand you all feel like this is unfair. But time waits for no one. Father is not coming back, and while everyone is busy mopping I have a title to bear, and duties to uphold. So we can all go back to over rooms and continue our crying after this has been done!" James exclaimed with a hard look, cutting Aunt Bell mid-speech.
"I swear one would think you are the one who killed my brother to claim the archduchy." Aunt Bell spewed with a look of sheer disgust on her face. Mom’s loud crying filled the room and I stepped closer.
“I did not steal anything. The archduchy is mine by birth. It is what I was born for. Father could die today or ten years to come and it would still be mine.” James stared down at my aunt, venom dripping off his tongue.
“Whoa! Everyone?” I stepped forward holding my hands up.
“Can somebody tell me what the fuck is going on? James?” I said staring at my brother through my peripheral vision,
He remained silent, a muscle ticking in his jaw as he continued his stare down with my aunt.
“Your brother here called the family lawyer to read the will. He is on his way as we speak.” My aunt spat angrily. My eyes flew open, and rage overshadowed the pain that pierced through my heart. Everything happened in slow motion from there. One minute I was sandwiched between my aunt trying to stop World War 3 from breaking, the next minute I had my hand clutched in another one as a stinging pain shot from my heating palm, through my arm, and straight to my brain.
A loud SLAP of skin hitting another skin echoed through the vast foyer, and everything else went dead silent.
James had his cheek covered with one hand, and a murderous look brewed on his face.
“You just don’t know where to draw the line, do you?” I spat angrily, tears pouring down my face.
“Is this the monster that father raised? Do you think he would look at everything you are doing and want you to be his successor? We all know that the archduchy meant everything to him, and what you are doing right now is nothing but a disgrace!” I walked towards him and stood right in front of him, chest to chest.
“Is the archduchy you all think of? Just what have you become, James?” I lost it. Fists, slaps, and everything came tumbling down as I turned his chest into a solid punching bag.
He took both my wrists in one hand, stopping me in one abrupt movement.
I hated how weak I was. I hated how I couldn’t stand up against my evil brother, how powerless I was because if I could, I would stop this nightmare in just a heartbeat, and James would not be the archduke.
“Don’t anger me, sister. All of this…” his eyes roamed the open foyer, landing on each one of us. I was the last one to receive his cursing stare. “-all of this including you, belongs to me. So don’t push me because, by the end of today, you’ll be homeless if you cross the line.” With a hard shove, he pushed me backward.
I tumbled backward and fell onto the floor like a pile of useless bones and flesh and I landed on the hard, cold surface with a meaty thunk.
Charlotte’s arms caught me a little too late. I clutched onto her and let out a wail I didn’t know I’d been holding.
“I HATE YOU,” I screamed.
“I hate you so fucking much you freaking monster.” James acted oblivious to my little meltdown and started to walk away, the phone in his hand. He held it to his ear, then nodded to whatever was being said in the receiver. He spun around, and with a sickening smirk called out:
“Everyone should come to the main office. The lawyer has arrived!”
James had already sucked all the decorum out of all of us, and no one cared how messy everyone must have looked. I scoffed when he claimed my father’s seat on the main desk, then leaned back and watched us like we were peasants under his mercy. His gaze was proud, triumph dripping off him with disgusting arrogance I found myself wondering if the man in front of us was the brother I grew up with and loved with the whole of me. “You are so fucking unbelievable.” Even though everything was happening right in front of my eyes, I still found myself having a hard time wrapping myself around the recent happenstances.Everything was happening so fast that my mind failed to catch up, and all it did was drag behind and register the events a little too late. Just a few days ago I was sleeping in a jail cell, and then my father died. I bet the Latino office
It had taken everything inside of me to sit outside of the office and listen to all the bullshit he had to say after the will was read and let’s say, I was rather amused by my level of patience. I never knew I had that patience until today. Eyes bore holes into me from every corner of the room, and I rolled my head on my shoulders slightly, before running my tongue across my teeth, then turned to face James where he stood looking like he was staring at a bloody ghost. If only he knew I was worse than ghosts! Worse than any kind of nightmare he could possibly think of.I was the ruination! And today was the literal end of his crazy!“I am Alejandro Rodriguez, the executor of the late Archduke’s will.” I introduced myself briefly, then turned to look at the widow who was canoodled in a chair
    Henry was at the front door as though he had been waiting for our exit, then cringed at my flustered face before opening the door for us. We walked out and down the small stairs. “Rayana.” A familiar voice called out, causing me to come to an abrupt halt. I glanced up to find Lucas standing right in front of us, a shocked expression marring his face. I just stood there, unable to form any words, and stared back. He regarded Alejandro who was like a mountain standing beside me. “I didn’t know you were going out today. I tried calling you.” He said walking closer, his eyes lingering on the space between us. That’s when it clicked that my hand was still nestled in Alejandro’s big one. I tried pulling it off, but Alejandroo tightened his grip, and I gave up the small fight. “Sorry, I… I was tired. But I am going out today.” I realized how wrong that sounded, especially when the person in front of me was no stranger, but my fiancee. “On business. This is Alejandro Rodriguez. The ex
I had watched her from afar since I signed the deal with his father, I had seen how she operates, and the sick fuck that lived in my soul wanted to claim her.All of her. From the silky black strands of her hair down to her tiny toes that were peeking out of those black shoes that looked so good on her. I didn’t respond to her.     Chapter 14RAYANA POVWe arrived shortly after six in the evening, and Alejandro dropped me off with the small information of him having to fly back to Italy that same night. My mind lagged behind and I nodded unthinkingly just for the sake of it while I kept on digesting on the things he revealed on our little excursion the whole day. I stood at the stairs of the castle and watched his car drive down the long driveway, red lights fading and swallowed by distance. I stood there for a minute longer, my bottom lip sawed through my teeth as my mind raced a mile per second. Before I could even think it through, my body decided for myself. I threw myself into the house before rushing to where the car keys were kept, then took the black key fob and raced out of the house. I bumped into James on the front door who cursed me like we did not share a DNA, but I paid no mind to his rumblings and ran out the door. At this point, it was clear to everyone who had eyes and ears that our relat
But the memory of all the happenstances that went down in Russia was running rampant and fresh in my mind like it was all yesterday. There was nothing I did or held without that little voice in my mind screaming at me when I remembered what had transpired.Every time I thought of all that, a shin of cold sweat ran down my spine; because there is no way in a thousand years I would have ever dreamed of doing what I did. But I just remember standing there after that phone call and thinking Alejandro was dead. That was the worst feeling in my entire life. And the way I reacted… Heck! Who knew I was capable of that? Negotiating with The President of Russia about dispatching the Mossad to aid me in the criminal aid? But then again, any woman would move mountains for the man she loved. That was just it. “Rayana.” My aunt- the queen- called out as soon as I stepped into her lounge room
    Chapter 52RAYANA POVThe twenty-minute drive to Odintsovo seemed to be taking an eternity. The President and Melanie had tried convincing me to stay behind while the Mossad took care of the criminals, but I kicked the idea straight to hell. I was not going to stay tucked safely in the white house while Alejandro fought for his life. Like he did with me, I was going to stand in front of bullets and carry them with my back instead. The tension was thick and cloying in the truck as we neared the base. I barked directions to the driver, and he patiently listened to my ramblings while swerving the car expertly until we arrived at the gate. Somehow we managed not to get lost and made it to the base. My prayer knew no end as I asked god to keep him alive until backup arrived. Alejandro needed to live.My heart leaped into my throat when I realized the giant gate was torched to the ground. I covered my mouth to stifle the cry that followed. There was no hope. There really was no hope.
    Chapter 51RAYANA POVThe conference was utterly unlike anything I have ever been to before. The topics were long dragged, the arguments never ended, people called out each other with horrible names and the shit hit the fan way sooner than one would expect. But at the end of the day, everything was brushed off in such a formal manner I failed to understand how these people functioned. It was during this conference I realized that my life had really pivoted. And I am talking real ass change. From drafting the budgets for the archduchy to representing the whole of the UK and the crown was something I never dared to even fathom in my entire life. And it looked like it was just the beginning. Just as Alejandro had said.I knew there were many more conferences like this one I would attend, and I wish my aunt, the queen was here for a quick hug. This was such an eye-opener. I smiled from where I sat, alone and assessing everything before my eyes. Ambassadors smiled and chatted about ho
    Chapter 50 ALEJANDRO POVThe throb on my side was slowly making me lose my mind. The drive back to Odintsovo seemed to be longer than usual, and somewhere along the ride, I felt my vision giving out. I ground my teeth, hating how weak I suddenly felt. Fuck. The knife must have been poisoned. That’s how shady the Russians were. “Hang in there.” Kaito rattled as he shifted gears and literally threw the car into sport mode. The roar of the engine and the exhaust pipe filled the streets, tires screeched, and all the side-to-side swaying made me even more dizzy. “Fuck. I told you we should get out of here.” He banged the steering wheel. “I am fine. This is nothing a medical patch won’t fix.” I said through clenched teeth, my skin growing hotter and hotter with each passing second. I could feel bids of sweat dripping down my spine, and I knew that if this continued, I might not make it. And fuck. My Rayana!“The Russians are going to come knocking at our door. Even when I want to let out a stinky fart, I will surely reach out to you.” She teased with a wink, then laughed at her own joke before peeking through the window and stealing a kiss on my lips, then rushed into the gates of the big guarded gates. Kaito chuckled at her joke as well. I realized I had one hell of a dry humor when that little joke didn’t faze me. “She is such a character.” Kaito commented with a shake of his head, and I couldn’t agree more. We waited until she was further inside before we pulled back to the road and drove away. I hated this place. Every nook of it reminded me of all the horrible things that are in this world. Alejandro was clearly unfazed by my choice of music, and a snort of laughter bubbled out of me. He just shook his head and continued scrolling on his phone, not saying a word to me. The men who came to pick us up were more of the stuck-up Suitsthan Alejandro ever and nothing like Kaito, and I figured that it was a Russian thing. We drove for less than half an hour before we came to a heavily guarded black gate. The driver rolled down his window before leaning into the eye-detect security system.
