[Cora]
“I can’t believe this. You haven’t gotten dressed yet?” screamed my mother, who suddenly opened the door to my room.
“Relax, Mom. It only took me less than five minutes to get ready.” I zipped up my red dress. The skirt fell on my knees. This dress shaped my curves perfectly, just like my mother wanted.
“How can I calm down? This is the sixth time you have gone to the matchmaking event held once a year in this kingdom. We’ve been to the same event five times, but you always come home mateless.” Mom helped braid my hair, then pinned the ends.
“If this year you are lucky and you finally meet him, do you think he will be your age? He must be younger. Men don’t like to see women who can’t take good care of themselves. He may reject you even though the mate bond is difficult to break. We don’t want that to have happened, do we?”
She took a step back after helping to apply lipstick on my lips and blush-on on my face. Her eyes looked satisfied with her work.
“I hope that Moon Goddess will finally listen to our sincere pray. Wish you meet your mate this afternoon.” Mother caressed my cheek affectionately.
Even though she was talkative and liked to scold me, I knew she meant well. She was only worried about me being single when other women my age had their mates.
At the age of eighteen, each werewolf would meet his wolf, at the same time his mate. Some people were fortunate to find their mate in their respective pack, like Mom and Dad, also my brother and his wife. A few more met during a visit or event we attended at another werewolf pack.
For the less fortunate werewolves, there was an annual event where all werewolves who had not found their mate would gather from all over the kingdom. It made it impossible for a werewolf to be mateless when he passed his twenty. Of course, unless his mate was much younger than him.
It was what I was afraid of. I was twenty-three years old. It would be the sixth time I attended the annual event. If all the werewolves who had not had a mate came in previous years and none of them was my mate, then my mate was most likely a werewolf who had just turned eighteen.
The five-year age difference was a huge age gap of a werewolf in general. But there were always particular cases that only Moon Goddess knew why She allowed it to happen. I was not too bothered by that. If only I had met my mate, I would be grateful. That was all that mattered.
However, there was one unusual case that Father and Mother were suspicious about. I could be a second chance for someone who lost a partner in a war, got sick, or got rejected. It was nothing to be ashamed of being the second option for us werewolves. Finding a partner was something to be proud of. Life without one would make us a laughing stock.
“Every year attending the same event just for your sake is a complete waste of time.” Tyra mocked me as I descended the stairs. She was my brother’s wife. “I believe you are cursed to have no mate.”
‘Please, let me just this once rip off that presumptuous mouth,’ Lou growled.
She was more temperamental than I, who was better at controlling emotions. Lou was my wolf. We met when I was turning eighteen. Though we had different characters, we complimented each other. She was a perfect gift from the Moon Goddess. I wouldn’t ask for a different wolf.
‘Just let her talk as she pleases. We both know that we will meet our partner sooner or later.’ I reassured her.
I was accustomed to Tyra’s bullying, so I stopped replying or taking it to heart. Fighting her wouldn’t do any good to me. She would be pleased if I got provoked. I had promised myself I wouldn’t let anyone hurt me. Having a partner or not, it was not what would determine my position in this pack.
“Are you ready?” asked Garrett, my kind-hearted older brother, who had just put my suitcase in the trunk.
My clothes and a few necessary things that I had to take with me were inside it on an assumption I met my mate today. The rest of my stuff could be picked up later by the guys from my mate’s pack. That was if I met him.
‘We’ll meet him, Cora.’ It was Lou’s turn to soothe me.
‘You mean we’re going to see him today?’ I asked in a hopeful tone.
She just kept quiet as she always did. After giving me a statement that gave me hope, she was never willing to tell more clues. She was a lovely wolf, but sometimes she made me so mad I wanted to pinch her cheeks hard.
I got into the car first, then Mom and Tyra followed. Father sat in the front with Garrett behind the wheel. Being close to the location of the event provided its own advantages. We didn’t have to make long trips or stay in a hotel every time we went there. It was only three hours drive.
It wasn’t just my family and me who went to the event. Those who had not had mates in our pack went with their families. Among all of us, I was the oldest. Luckily, my family didn’t seem embarrassed to accompany me to this festival. Only Tyra tried hard to hide her dislike. But I didn’t care about her opinion.
The Alphas of the other packs in this continent also attended as the person in charge of the event. That meant Maddox, Alpha of the Royal Blue Pack was in front of us, leading our way to the location.
The streets were lined with people waving us off, hoping we would all go home with our respective mates. I saw my best friend was standing with her husband in front of their house. I waved my hand at her. She threw a kiss in the air for me. I saw Tyra sneering, but I just ignored her.
Dad and Garrett dominated most of the conversation throughout our journey. I preferred to be quiet and listen. A big shock just happened two days ago. Scarlett Sky Pack was destroyed by a group of Rogues and Hunters. Although no survivors were found from the pack, the King ordered an in-depth investigation. We have lived in peace for a long time. That incident ruined everything.
Rogue was a werewolf who did not belong to any pack. It could be because of his own decision or banished by the pack. On the other hand, Hunters are cold-blooded humans who hate our kind and love to kill us.
The two groups were not good friends. Then for what reason did they work together to attack a strong pack? Scarlett Sky Pack should not have collapsed that easily. Their opponents were only Rogues and Hunters.
“There must be another reason for the end of such a large pack. I can’t believe that Knox and Ursula Blackwood were gone. This is the first time I won’t be meeting them at our big event.” Seeing Father grieving, we were silent and did not dare to speak. Only Mom rubbed Dad’s arm to comfort him.
“According to the news, Alpha Axel’s body was not found. They found several enemies who were killed by an Alpha. He joined the war, but his body was not there. They assumed that he was deliberately drowned in the river because the location of the corpse he killed was not far from that location,” said Garrett which intrigued me.
His body was nowhere in the pack?
“If he fell into the river, he would not survive. On the night of the war, it was raining heavily. That was why the King’s men couldn’t quickly carry out an investigation. It is astonished me. How could an Alpha be defeated by untrained people? How could his Beta and famous formidable warriors lose their lives?”
Garrett was right. Alpha was the strongest one in his pack. He would not be easy to beat. Rogues and Hunters were no match for him. I had seen Maddox and Atlas, his wolf, in battle. They were strong, ruthless, and quick to kill. They were literally difficult to defeat.
“Hopefully, there are living witnesses who can tell us what happened because they even killed innocent women and children. They have not officially announced whether there are survivors from Scarlett Sky’s or their attackers,” Garrett said.
‘Poor Alpha. They wiped out his pack, and he could not get the funeral he deserved. I hope his death wasn’t too painful.’ Lou sounded sincere in sympathy.
‘Alpha Axel. Fortunately, I didn’t get to know him while he was alive. I had only seen him from afar on a few occasions.’
According to some people I knew, he was a good person and cared deeply for the people in his pack, the kind of ideal Alpha. He even treated low-rank werewolves with respect. His people were satisfied under his command.
‘He was handsome and sexy, for sure.’ Lou began to fantasize.
‘All Alphas are handsome and sexy, Lou.’ I rolled my eyes mentally.
“Do you think the king will come? We have an urgent situation. I hope he will do something to stop the war from spreading to another pack,” Mom said in fear.
Dad looked at Mom and held her hand. “He will come. He didn’t attend the event last year. He never absent two times in a row.”
“You know rogues and hunters didn’t destroy that pack. One of us did. We are closer to Scarlett Sky Pack, honey,” Mom reminded in a shaky voice. “Don’t you think we can be their next target?”
“Don’t worry, Mom.” I hugged her, trying to comfort her. “We will protect you. I believe Maddox is doing his best to find a way to increase our defense. No pack can easily destroy us.” “You won’t protect me. You will meet your mate today.” Mom pinches my chin with affection. “Well then, I’ll force him to ignore the tradition and stay with us,” I joked. “No!!!” Dad, Mom, and Garrett shouted in unison. I looked at them in surprise. “What? Are you guys so impatient to kick me out of the house? Is that why you’re so hopeful I’ll meet my mate today?” I asked, pretending to be angry. Mom’s mood changed for the better. She was no longer thinking about our intense conversation. Dad and Garrett shared the jokes they had. So, the rest of our trip was full of laughter. Even that annoying Tyra was giggling. “OK. We have arrived.” Garrett stopped the car in the available parking space. “I’m sure you will discuss that matter later at royal dinner. Watch your words, Son. Don’t say any bad thin
As expected, I was the one standing still on the ground as no one came to get me. I would spend this year alone again. Of course, with the more intense bullying from my sister-in-law and her best friend. The committee asked us to return to our families. Dad and Mom looked at me with sympathy on their faces. I could only be a daughter that brings them ashamed. I was raised by Beta. Unfortunately, my fate was worse than an Omega, the lowest class in the werewolf pack. Most of the Omegas in our pack had found their mates. Not all of them met their destined mates who came from the Goddess. Some chose their own ones and completed the mating and marking rituals. I could not choose my own mate as Lou would not let me do that. She hoped that we would meet our destined one. She had been waiting this long, so she did not want to give up yet. “You will find him. He’s somewhere out there looking for a chance to meet you,” Mom said as she hugged me tightly. I held myself back from crying. “Let
Before I could turn around, something powerful slammed into my body. Fortunately, I was fast enough to grip it and throw it away from me. A familiar laugh echoed in the forest. I looked at the attacker with a sneer. He needed to change his trick because it was boring and predictable. He stood up straight and got in a position ready to attack. His mouth formed a grin. Other wolves might be scared to see that, but not me. I had never even bowed to him, let alone flinched against him. “Why are you standing still? Come and get me!” I challenged. With a stomp of a foot, he ran over. I prepared to tackle his blow. His right hand clenched into a hard fist and launched toward my face. A few inches before he could reach my cheek, I dodged. Suddenly, he shifted and increased his movement speed significantly compared to mine. Cheater! I couldn’t transform that fast. While dodging strike after strike, I looked for an opening to distance myself. ‘Now!’ Lou commanded as I saw the chance to esca
Lou ran so fast to the riverbank. It was as if something enormous was controlling her. My heart was beating rapidly the closer we got to the river. It couldn’t be right. Even if she was powerful, she couldn’t face the intruder alone. ‘Lou, we need to call someone. We can’t face the enemy alone!’ I warned her. ‘There!’ She said. I could feel she was worried about something. She ran towards the thing on the riverbank. I saw it as soon as I passed the rock blocking my view. A man was lying there in torn clothes. I quickly approached, noticing his heart beating weaker and weaker. I noticed his chest rising and falling, signaling he was still alive. The delicious scent I had inhaled earlier was getting stronger as if coming from his body. Who was he? How did he get here? Judging from the bluish color of his skin, he must have been drifting for days. ‘Mate!’ Lou shouted. What? ‘Mate! He’s our mate!’ Oh, Goddess! He’s our mate? I touched his cheek, and something weird ran through my vei
Maddox and Garrett stood side by side when I arrived in front of the ICU room. Garrett shook his head slowly, telling me he couldn't help me this time. Maddox looked at me coldly, expressionlessly. I was like a puppy caught biting his mom's favorite couch and ready to be punished. “You found him last night,” Maddox said. It was a statement, not a question. “Yes, Alpha,” I replied politely. I knew this wasn’t the time to act like a friend. So, I called him by his title. “Then what’s the reason you didn’t report this to me as soon as possible?” he demanded. I glanced at Garrett. He just looked at me blankly. “I’m sorry, it haven’t cross my mind. We’ve almost lost him, so-” “We?” he cut off. “Lou and I. He was dying and died suddenly. So, I gave him a CPR to help. I thought about calling Luke because he could help us. I didn’t think to report this to you immediately. After all, he didn’t look like a bad guy.” “Why did you must mention CPR?” asked Aspen, who walked up from behind Ma
Aspen entered the room with a bright red face. I didn't know what she was angry about. Although she quickly put her face to a neutral expression, I already saw it. Could it be that she was upset about the fact that I found my partner? A Luna should not overhear conversations, let alone interrupt others. But I chose to remain silent and not protest her disrespectful act. Luke bowed respectfully to her while I just stared at her fearlessly. “Why are you silent? Answer me!” she demanded. “We have a guest of honor, so you shouldn’t spread unverifiable news. This man is no ordinary person. He’s an Alpha that the whole world is paying attention to.” I almost rolled my eyes at that because she was the one who liked to gossip and spread it. I didn’t say anything about Alpha Axel being my mate. Luke and the nurses deduced it themselves because they witnessed him kissing me. “We don’t gossip, Luna,” Luke said politely, he glanced at me. “Cora and Alpha Axel are mates. He even confirmed it by
[Axel] My chest was tight. Every time I took a breath, my left chest ached. The shouts of the people who attacked me, the mocking laughter, and the sweet voice that broke my heart blended, deafening my ears. All of that indicated that I was still alive. What for? I had lost everything. Father, Mother, best friend, mate, even the place where I was born and grew up. What else could I do in this world as an orphan? Become a Rogue and live in rebellion? I did not want to live with the group that had caused the deaths of those closest to me. The delicious scent of cinnamon entered my nostrils. Mom’s signature scent whenever she made our family's favorite bread. I always knew she was nearby whenever I inhaled that scent. Mom was gone, so where did this intoxicating fragrance come from? I opened my eyes and met a pair of beautiful green eyes. Her long blonde hair was in a ponytail with bangs covering the forehead. The scent grew stronger whenever she got closer and lessened when she moved
I didn’t have any personal belongings, only the clothes I wore, so I didn’t need to pack up before leaving the hospital. Because the effects of the medicine had worn off completely, all my senses were functioning well. My sight, hearing, and smell were sharp again. I vaguely smelled that delicious cinnamon scent. I believed Cora must still be around the hospital. Maddox was talking to Luke about my next appointment. The doctor was amazed at how quickly I recovered. That was not unusual for an Alpha. The hospital was quite large and spacious. Nurses were not walking around, showing that not many patients were treated in this building. In peacetime, the hospital was not crowded because werewolves rarely got sick. Even if they suffered from a severe illness, it was detected before it was difficult to cure. “Don’t lie! You took advantage of his unconscious state by calling him your mate. How could such a handsome and powerful man be your mate,” a woman exclaimed. I stopped my steps and
[Axel] The messenger Father sent did not say the reason for summoning us to the palace. But hearing the word immediately, I knew I had to get the news directly from his mouth. I was sure this had nothing to do with his health or my mother. Then what was it? Many royal guards were accompanying us. Why would Father add more people to escort us? I didn't hear any bad news from any pack. The disputing Alphas promised to resolve their issues peacefully. The journey seemed too long because I couldn't wait to reach the palace. Cora was silent, busy with her thoughts. She must have been thinking the same thing as me, guessing why Father had urged us to come and see him. The King and Queen not welcoming us in front of the palace. It was the first alarming sign. The bodyguard invited me to follow him to Father's study. Cora and I followed him. Arriving on the second floor, he approached the large door and opened it for us. "Ah, welcome, Elric, Cora," Father greeted. "Thank you, Father," I
After going through a tearful goodbye, Axel and I headed to our new residence. Although it was only temporary, I had a feeling we’d be in that painful place for quite a while. Therefore, I had to brace myself and learn to accept them as new people who would live a long time with me and my little family. The two of us were silent on the way to the new pack. I was pounding in anticipation of our meeting with them while Axel remained calm. His heart was beating regularly, and his breathing was steady. Unlike me, who repeatedly let out a long sigh. Axel held my hand, breaking my reverie. “Don’t worry about our new place. They’ll accept us well.” “I kind of doubt that,” I admitted. “What if someone wants to avenge Devon by hurting us or even our children?” “Devon is not an Alpha to look up to, Baby. In a few days, you’ll believe they’re different from their former Alpha,” Axel said confidently. Hearing that, I realized one thing. Axel had been friends with Devon for a long time. Of cou
I clenched my fist at the conditions he put forward. What an ignorant man. How dare he put forward terms when he was in a difficult situation. We were the ones with the upper hand. Wasn’t he afraid we could cut his head off this very second? His self-confidence made me resentful, but Axel held my hand, calming me down. My heart was beating so fast, and my breathing was ragged with anger, but he was being so calm. He should have been outraged at that sly witch’s arrogant words.“Did you not listen to what I said earlier?” the King asked calmly. “You and we have different beliefs about mates. Forget about your conditions. I propose unconditional peace because we should not let our parents’ problem create a conflict between us.”"Then the war will continue." The man's face turned red. "You are too proud of your power and beliefs to want to unite with us. Who now does not want peace among our people?""The terms you propose-" the King objected."See you later, Edmund." The man effortlessl
[Cora]I knew something awful would happen. Everything ran too smoothly, which raised my suspicion. My life had never been so peaceful since I met Axel. Even a daily routine became a nightmare. It was an excellent opportunity for them to harm us on my big day. Many influential people gathered in one place was a temptation for our enemies. I didn’t know the reason for their attack. I hoped the King had prepared a defense plan for this unexpected event.I shouldn’t have to worry because everyone here is a strong man. Axel is not the only royal lycan who shapeshifts to face the enemy. Many other royal lycans had sprung up and spread out to counterattack.Nevertheless, the enemy wouldn’t be so reckless as to attack if they weren’t sure of winning. I’ve seen the proof myself. Scarlett Sky Pack was flattened to the ground. Their attack was no joke. They managed to wipe out one pack from the northern kingdom.'Mom, I know you're strong. But please enter the shelter with the others. I can't l
She didn’t speak while I relayed the things we needed to discuss. After I finished saying everything, she was still silent. She wrinkled her forehead, a sign that she was thinking about it seriously. I knew this was a big decision.Although she was used to her job as a trainer of young wolves to become formidable warriors in their pack, I believed she could be my best companion in leadership. The Moon Goddess would not have matched us if we were not compatible. But what she would do in the future requires enormous sacrifice, especially in the transition. I didn’t want to go back there and rehash every single one of those excruciating moments. Moreover, Cora lost our baby there. That was why the King asked my parents to move out immediately. So, they didn’t have to come with me and Cora. They would refuse to stay in a place that has treated them terribly. If it wasn’t for my responsibility, I wouldn’t want to do this, either.“The King asked that you lead the Blood River Pack until the
I couldn’t sleep that night after talking to the King. The duty of leading this country was nothing compared to the special responsibility he gave me. I didn’t expect that the solution he had in mind would involve me. His offer for my foster parents to live in the capital made sense. I could lead with peace of mind if they were in a safe place, unreachable by my old or new enemies. My coronation as crown prince would cause turmoil in the witch community. But if all werewolves and royal lycans were united, they couldn’t divide us. The strength of all of us was enough to fight back if they rebelled in the future. That was why they were looking for someone like Devon to ruin the peace between us. To ease my mind, I let Ryder go for a morning run in the forest near the palace. I only stopped near the lake I'd seen with the King on my first night of shapeshifting. The view was much more beautiful near sunrise. 'We can do this,' Ryder said, reassuring me. 'You led a large pack once. So y
[Axel] I didn’t expect my parents to announce my identity so soon. Gathering all the people from different parts of the world was no easy feat. No wonder they rushed back to the palace after defusing Devon’s attack on the Royal Blue Pack. They asked all the Kings to attend today. I was not ready to take on my duties as a prince. But I wouldn’t be prepared if I didn’t force myself to learn. After lunch, I did not return to the bedroom with Cora. Father requested something from the King, which he immediately granted. We headed for the dungeon, and I walked behind, allowing my second parent to get closer to the destination cell. We had no trouble figuring out where he was because since we entered, he was the only one yelling for the guards to let him go. I didn’t hear anyone protest. Perhaps there were no other prisoners in the same corridor, so they weren’t bothered by his screaming. “Looks like you enjoy your new home,” Father teased the man inside. Egor moved his head and was stu
The King, Queen, and Alphas stood in the first row while I and the rest stood behind them. Axel was on my right, Alicia on my left. They all knew what happened, but only my entourage was clueless. When three cars entered the grounds, I knew they belonged to the royalty who must have just picked them up from the airport. They were the guests of honor. Oh my! Were the envoys from the neighboring kingdoms coming to join us?"King and Queen of the West Kingdom," the attendant announced.I turned to Axel, who frowned, equally confused. Then I glanced at Alicia, who was smiling meaningfully. I squinted at her, but she just chuckled, unwilling to open her mouth about what was going on.The King and Queen greeted their honored guests, while we just smiled and nodded our heads to them. The King took them to a side garden, so we followed as quietly as possible.I was amazed that the garden had been decorated with beautiful little lights. A round table had been neatly arranged with chairs surrou
“Maddox!? What are you doing? Are you crazy!” shouted Dad as he approached him and took the knife from his hand. “What have you done?”He looked at the bodies in horror. They were lying on the floor, so I could not see them from my side. The conference table covered their bodies from my sight. Dad knelt and mourned for his best friends. My chest tightened as I witnessed my best friend doing an unexpected action.Maddox looked cold. His expression was unreadable. Could he turn mad because he lost his mate? Everything was fine yesterday until last night. He was attending the dinner and giving a speech. He didn’t show any suspicious behavior."Oh, Goddess!" Dad suddenly stood up and took a step back. His face turned pale as white as a sheet."What happened?" asked Mom and Aunt Ursula in unison. They approached Dad and looked at the floor where the bodies were. "My Goddess!" they closed their mouths with their hands, shocked."They still have my parents," Maddox declared, surprising us. H
