A Bird of Prey

last update Last Updated: 2021-07-25 16:04:30

A well trained killer, Nwosu was fast on his feet, and I was still recovering. He ran into the street and I followed him as fast as my strength could allow me. As I pursued him, I had two things eating at me in my head. The first was the guilt I felt about Taiye's unfortunate demise, the second was the main reason I stalked the bartender for weeks and caused his death in the first place. I wanted answers, I needed answers. I had always been like this, always looking for puzzles to solve, since I could remember. My mind always falls apart the moment it goes quiet. Then I had to solve the most important puzzle of them all. Who killed my father, and why. A question a powerful group of people didn't want anybody asking.

Nwosu wasn't interested in an encounter with me, I guess it wasn't part of his orders. He fired some shots at me as I pursued him through the street, he seemed to be more focused on escaping than hitting me, but I was not taking chances. I had a bulletproof vest on. The street was close to the port and very linear and organised, unlike most of the streets in the city, and at the end of the street was a seaport. I already anticipated that he would try to escape through the congested port, filled with containers and working men.

I chased him into the port then he suddenly stopped running and turned to me, and started to shoot, the gunshot scared the men at work off as they all scattered in different directions. He was fed up and wanted me to stop chasing him so, he shot more accurately as I took cover behind an empty container. He soon ran out of bullets, having it in his mind that I was trapped with him, he removed a km2000 combat knife from behind his trousers with his right hand and charged at me, wielding the weapon with all his strength and fury. I reacted quickly, countering all his moves, until the last minute, he suddenly slipped the knife to the left hand and tried stabbing through my left chest, aiming for the heart. I shifted my body to the right side as quickly as possible but I was not quick enough to miss the whole knife. I screamed in pain as the knife went through the flesh of my left arm, then furiously headbutted him to get him off me, he staggered aback, but came back running almost immediately. I waited until he got closer and hit him with a well timed blow to the neck, I could almost hear as his throat was crushed, I felt it under my fist. He fell to the ground clenching at his neck, gasping for air and coughing up blood.

I suddenly felt so tired and out of air. I shouldn't be doing this yet, "I whispered to myself."

I walked over to my downed enemy as he struggled on the ground. There was no chance of getting anything out of him now, I just crushed his throat but, I wanted to say something to him, I just had to revel in my triumph against the man that shot me and put me in the hospital for months. I bent down over him and whispered;

"If you survive this, assassin. Tell your employers, whomever they are...tell them that I am coming for them."

I stood up just in time for the sirens of police cars to rise into the air, the patrol cars immediately blocked all exits to of the port and I was in trouble, I had to escape and very quickly, but I was already so weak from the running and fighting. The flashing lights of the police cars blinded my sight and just as I begin to stagger aback, something amazing happened. The police cars that blocked the port exit to my front got rammed, by something, the impact sent the vehicles and cops flying out of the way. I froze for a moment, wondering what the hell was going on. Then the very bright fog lights of the vehicle blinked continuously, an unusually built large vehicle that looked like a tank. I ran towards it as the police opened fire without warning, the door flung open and I jumped in just in time to escape being riddled with bullets. I almost screamed in amazement when I found out that the vehicle was empty, and I was even more open-mouthed when the vehicle reversed out of the exit it came in through and zoomed away with such an amazing speed for a vehicle that big.

"Hello, bro," a voice coming from inside the vehicle suddenly said.

"What the hell is going on?" I screamed.

"Calm down, it's me. It's me, captain Micheal to the rescue," he joked.

"How the hell are you doing this? How were you able to find me? You know what don't answer that."

"Well, it's a good thing you now realize I can find you anywhere at anytime. You are being chased by the police though, how cool is that!"

"Not cool at all, Micheal! I'm in a self driven tank and the police wants me dead, not cool, you crazy kid, not cool!"

"Let's do something about the police then, shall we?"he laughed, then the computers that made up the dashboard of the vehicle suddenly went haywire and I heard something being fired from the back of the vehicle. All the police cars pursuing me suddenly went off, and sent crashing and jamming one another. Even the street lights blinked and then went off, some exploded and sent sparks of lights into the air.

"Sorry, I forgot how powerful those E.M.Ps were. They got the job done though," Micheal's voice interrupted my bewilderment.

"How the hell did you do all this?" J asked.

"I was going to show you but...well, I just did. Dad and I had something in common, Danny. We liked building shit, and we built a lot of shit. I've got a lot of things to show you," he replied.

"You are awesome!" I suddenly screamed.

"What? You.."

"You just saved me, Micheal! You are awesome!" I laughed.

"You don't know how much that means to me... Thank you. See you at base."he said with a serious, crackling voice.

The vehicle took a bush path and returned to the mansion through a rout I never knew existed, it entered the compound through an abandoned back gate and after a drive through an open land that I used to play on as a kid, a large door to an underground vault suddenly began to open in front of me, I sat there with my mouth half opened. The vehicle drove into the vault and it was like a whole new world began to unleash in front of my eyes. The vehicle parked beside other weird vehicles and the door flung open. I stepped out and Michael was standing in front of me with a big grin on his face.

"Welcome to the Fort. Let me show you around," he said.

Oh, I hated everything about it. The quietness made me want to lose my mind, even when my mother was alive. She was sickly and always looked unhappy. Dad was never around, and how could h
