A well trained killer, Nwosu was fast on his feet, and I was still recovering. He ran into the street and I followed him as fast as my strength could allow me. As I pursued him, I had two things eating at me in my head. The first was the guilt I felt about Taiye's unfortunate demise, the second was the main reason I stalked the bartender for weeks and caused his death in the first place. I wanted answers, I needed answers. I had always been like this, always looking for puzzles to solve, since I could remember. My mind always falls apart the moment it goes quiet. Then I had to solve the most important puzzle of them all. Who killed my father, and why. A question a powerful group of people didn't want anybody asking.
Nwosu wasn't interested in an encounter with me, I guess it wasn't part of his orders. He fired some shots at me as I pursued him through the street, he seemed to be more focused on escaping than hitting me, but I was not taking chances. I had a bulletproof vest on. The street was close to the port and very linear and organised, unlike most of the streets in the city, and at the end of the street was a seaport. I already anticipated that he would try to escape through the congested port, filled with containers and working men.
I chased him into the port then he suddenly stopped running and turned to me, and started to shoot, the gunshot scared the men at work off as they all scattered in different directions. He was fed up and wanted me to stop chasing him so, he shot more accurately as I took cover behind an empty container. He soon ran out of bullets, having it in his mind that I was trapped with him, he removed a km2000 combat knife from behind his trousers with his right hand and charged at me, wielding the weapon with all his strength and fury. I reacted quickly, countering all his moves, until the last minute, he suddenly slipped the knife to the left hand and tried stabbing through my left chest, aiming for the heart. I shifted my body to the right side as quickly as possible but I was not quick enough to miss the whole knife. I screamed in pain as the knife went through the flesh of my left arm, then furiously headbutted him to get him off me, he staggered aback, but came back running almost immediately. I waited until he got closer and hit him with a well timed blow to the neck, I could almost hear as his throat was crushed, I felt it under my fist. He fell to the ground clenching at his neck, gasping for air and coughing up blood.
I suddenly felt so tired and out of air. I shouldn't be doing this yet, "I whispered to myself."
I walked over to my downed enemy as he struggled on the ground. There was no chance of getting anything out of him now, I just crushed his throat but, I wanted to say something to him, I just had to revel in my triumph against the man that shot me and put me in the hospital for months. I bent down over him and whispered;
"If you survive this, assassin. Tell your employers, whomever they are...tell them that I am coming for them."
I stood up just in time for the sirens of police cars to rise into the air, the patrol cars immediately blocked all exits to of the port and I was in trouble, I had to escape and very quickly, but I was already so weak from the running and fighting. The flashing lights of the police cars blinded my sight and just as I begin to stagger aback, something amazing happened. The police cars that blocked the port exit to my front got rammed, by something, the impact sent the vehicles and cops flying out of the way. I froze for a moment, wondering what the hell was going on. Then the very bright fog lights of the vehicle blinked continuously, an unusually built large vehicle that looked like a tank. I ran towards it as the police opened fire without warning, the door flung open and I jumped in just in time to escape being riddled with bullets. I almost screamed in amazement when I found out that the vehicle was empty, and I was even more open-mouthed when the vehicle reversed out of the exit it came in through and zoomed away with such an amazing speed for a vehicle that big.
"Hello, bro," a voice coming from inside the vehicle suddenly said.
"What the hell is going on?" I screamed.
"Calm down, it's me. It's me, captain Micheal to the rescue," he joked.
"How the hell are you doing this? How were you able to find me? You know what don't answer that."
"Well, it's a good thing you now realize I can find you anywhere at anytime. You are being chased by the police though, how cool is that!"
"Not cool at all, Micheal! I'm in a self driven tank and the police wants me dead, not cool, you crazy kid, not cool!"
"Let's do something about the police then, shall we?"he laughed, then the computers that made up the dashboard of the vehicle suddenly went haywire and I heard something being fired from the back of the vehicle. All the police cars pursuing me suddenly went off, and sent crashing and jamming one another. Even the street lights blinked and then went off, some exploded and sent sparks of lights into the air.
"Sorry, I forgot how powerful those E.M.Ps were. They got the job done though," Micheal's voice interrupted my bewilderment.
"How the hell did you do all this?" J asked.
"I was going to show you but...well, I just did. Dad and I had something in common, Danny. We liked building shit, and we built a lot of shit. I've got a lot of things to show you," he replied.
"You are awesome!" I suddenly screamed.
"What? You.."
"You just saved me, Micheal! You are awesome!" I laughed.
"You don't know how much that means to me... Thank you. See you at base."he said with a serious, crackling voice.
The vehicle took a bush path and returned to the mansion through a rout I never knew existed, it entered the compound through an abandoned back gate and after a drive through an open land that I used to play on as a kid, a large door to an underground vault suddenly began to open in front of me, I sat there with my mouth half opened. The vehicle drove into the vault and it was like a whole new world began to unleash in front of my eyes. The vehicle parked beside other weird vehicles and the door flung open. I stepped out and Michael was standing in front of me with a big grin on his face.
"Welcome to the Fort. Let me show you around," he said.
My father and I had not spoken in years when the news of his death reached me in Japan. We fought and I left home when I was sixteen years old. My mother had just passed and my maternal grandmother was still alive, so I moved in with her. A year later I was on a plane leaving the country.I was always getting into trouble, always getting into fights back then, and my father couldn't deal with it anymore. He was the C.E.O. of DANSCORP and he wouldn't have his only son turn out to be such a disappointment. His legacy was on the line. I didn't care about all that back then, I was just a kid hurting, and I was taking it out on the world whenever I got the chance to do so because the only time anybody paid attention to me was when I acted out. So I acted out in school and got expelled from a couple of schools before I was taken by a school owned by one of my Dad's rich friends."You got your grandfather's anger in you boy. I just pray it doesn't get you into trouble as
The house was as I remembered it, except there used to be fewer employees around. The mansion had been in the family forever, my family lived and died in the building for generations. The Danjumas were one of the first settlers and one of the oldest families in the city. The walls of the main house are full of old paintings, most of them portraits of old masters of the house, dating from the first to the last, my father.I stared at the paintings for a moment, blocking out Khalid's voice."The master's bedroom has been prepared for you, son," he finally said, slapping me on the shoulder to bring me back to the present."Oh, thank you, Khalid," I replied, startled by the sudden feel of his hand on my shoulder.I was thinking about how much I hated the house as a kid. Oh, I hated everything about it. The quietness made me want to lose my mind, even when my mother was alive. She was sickly and always looked unhappy. Dad was never around, and how could h
The bar had Ralph's bar boldly written at the front, just above the door. I walked in and was immediately greeted by the smell of alcohol, cigarettes, and vomit. There was loud music coming from the large speakers placed in the four corners of the room. I walked to the bar and one of the bartenders asked me what I wanted to drink."Whisky, please," I replied. He stared weirdly as he provided me with the drink. I thought he would have recognized me if he was at the funeral a week ago. A large bearded man sat to my left, "he must be the bouncer," I thought to myself."Hey, I would like to meet the owner," I referred to the bartender after sipping my drink for a while."The owner? I am the owner," he replied."We both know that's a lie, buddy. Now we can do this the easy way, and believe me the easy way is the best way for you.""What are you talking about, man? I am
I was bleeding out on the alley, and I thought that was it. I was about to meet my maker, and I was expecting the flashes of your life that comes before the total, final darkness of cessation. All the regrets of my past missteps came flushing in and in that moment, I realized how my father must have felt when he visited me for the last time, and I felt ashamed of my behavior towards him."Hey, man. You got fucked up pretty bad," a voice broke my line of thought. I strained my sight, trying so hard to see who it was but I was so empty of the strength to even open my eyes, and so, I slowly gave in to the darkness. When I woke up, I found myself laid back on my bed, with an IV stuck into my right arm. I tried to move, but the sharp pain I felt made me stop instantly."Hello, Dan. I am Dr. James, your family physician. You were shot on your left side, the hip bone, just under your ribs. Getting shot in that alley was the second time I would get shot, first time I got shot, I was in a bar brawl. The guy pulled a gun after getting jumped by a couple of us, he shot and the bullet went through my arm. I thought that felt awful until I was bleeding out in the alleyway. Most of my days in America were violent, I had been shot, stabbed and I did some horrible things myself. When I got to the sanctuary in Japan, I thought it was over, I sought to put my violent past behind me but I could not have been more wrong. I realized my violent past was not over, it was indeed being kick-started. I failed to put my violent past behind me, I keep failing to do it. Violence just has a tricky way of finding me wherever I went.I was bedridden for months after getting shot, I went through physical therapy to get back into shape, but getting shot has a way of leaving lasting damages, be it physical or psychological. As I got better, right from the days I was bedridden I planned my
I stalked the bartender at Ralphs for two weeks, learning his routines. The man was named Taiye Mark. He left his home in Kings Avenue by seven, took his kids, a boy and a girl to school on Oosha street. He sometimes checked up on his girlfriend on Westview street, he stayed there for at least an hour and then by ten in the morning he would have been at the bar opening up. People in the city starts to drink as early as possible which is understandable. When you have a city filled with hopeless poor people who work their asses off and get nothing for it, the result is that you have a lot of irresponsible drunks around. People started coming to the bar immediately Mark opened its doors, so I wouldn't have had much time to interrogate him in the bar before we would have been interrupted. I decided to wait for him after closing hours around twelve a.m. in the morning. The parking lot was the best place to have a conversation with him, once he got into his car. Mark was a runner, and I w
