My name is Cordelia Gabriel, and I’m a witch. It’s my 18th birthday. At the Bar Mitzvah, each witch goes through a ceremony to become a full member of our witch coven. Tonight, I’m going through this ritual.
The ceremony took place in a hidden forest. Witches once flourished, but now they are in decline. Ten years ago, Alpha King, from the Dark Shine Pack, united this country, and no one was allowed to use magic in this land. The coven has been reduced to untouchables, oppressed.
But we didn’t give up hope. Ancient prophecies have been told for thousands of years that in the time of the tribe’s survival, a chosen one will rise up, the hope of the tribe of witches, and allow all witches to use magic freely again. And I am that hope. But I’m so afraid that I’m going to fuck up.
“Mom, what if I screw up? What if I’m not the Chosen One?”I paced nervously around the room. The ceremony starts in less than an hour.
“No, baby. Trust me,”my mother said softly, holding my hand. “You are The chosen one. The Father of Wecca has revealed it to me in dreams many times. You know, I am a prophet...”
“And a prophet’s dream is never wrong,”I murmured, “but still, What if I am not the one? What if I fail? What if I let everyone down?”
She smiled, a soft glow on her face. “Don’t worry, dear. You are my daughter, and I’ll be with you no matter what. Why don’t you get your birth certificate and other things you would need?” She suggested.
Ah, yes, that stupid Birth certificate. I went to my desk, took out an old piece of parchment that looked more like an ancient scroll with my name on it: Cordelia Gabrie. It is written in black ink and covered by a tiny, blood-red handprint. Witch Coven has some custom lagging far behind time, cutting the newborn baby’s palm and imprinting on a parchment being one of them. The Birth Certificate is believed to curb witches’ magic and prevent it from going wild. After a systematic study of magical theory, the witch would throw the paper into the fire at her 18-year-old Bar Mitzvah to liberate magic and become a real witch. The consequences of what could happen if my birth certificate isn’t burned flashed through my mind and I quickly shook it off. I wasn’t going to let that happen.
I walked out of my room after getting everything I needed, and bumped into Mave.
“Oh! Look, the chosen one has finally decided to grace us with her presence” the contempt in her voice wasn’t a surprise anymore.
“What do you want, Mave?” I asked tiredly, I wasn’t in the mood to deal with her tantrums today.
“Just because everyone thinks you are the chosen one doesn’t mean you are” she sneered in my face.
A sigh left my lips, tired from her rude comments. I didn’t ask to be the chosen one, I never asked for any of this to happen. Why does she behave like it is my fault?
“What? Cat got your tongue?” She asked with an evil smirk on her face.
“Look, Mave, I--” I started only to get interrupted by her.
“No, you listen to me.” she said, her voice laced with anger and hate. “Even if your mother is right, you are nothing but a let down. You will fail and disappoint everyone.” Her words made me feel uneasy. What if she is right?
“Really? From what I remember you were the one disappointing your parents and coven a few days ago.” I heard Keera, my best friend who was now glaring at Mave
“YOU! I-”
“Go and do something useful for once.” Keera said dismissing Mave, who stomped her feet like a little girl and left.“Bitch!” Keera muttered under her breath.
“It’s time, let’s go,” Mother announced, before I could scold my best friend, she held my hand giving it a reassuring squeeze. I took a deep breath, looked at her with a smile and nodded. She smiled back gently easing my nerves as we made our way out with Keera closely following behind us.
We all wore black caps and held the book of shadows close to our chests. I had to carry my birth certificate along with my book of shadows, the certificate I was going to sacrifice in the fire the moment I turned 18.
We made our way to the sacred ground where the ritual of initiation was held. The ritual where I was going to become a witch for the first time, and officially become a part of our coven, and be able to attain magic for the first time.
"Here! We welcome you all here for this ritual that is going to save us from the brutality of those beastly creatures that are ruling the world," one of the oldest witches, Marion, made everyone stand in the circle around me.
Once I let the black cape slip down my body, I was revealed to be wearing a silk white dress that could hardly cover my thighs. The black long cape had saved me from getting a frost bite before but now that it was being taken off of my body by the order of Marion, I found my skin shivering terribly under the cold wind.
They had lighted up the fire in front of me and put a cauldron to the side where they were going to put the items of sacrifice. The howling of the wind was making it difficult for our ears to pick up any noise. The storm has started to set in, a perfect weather for the ritual.
They tied me to the big oak tree, as it was said that once the newest witch gets her powers, she might lose the control of her body for some time as the power could be too much for her to handle.
"We welcome a new witch to our Coven, a witch who is going to save us and make us free again. We present a virgin, pure and untouched witch, Cordelia Gabriel, before the father of wecca,” the announcement of my name had only brought a smile on everyone's lips when suddenly the atmosphere filled with weird noises and howls. My body shuddered while being tied to the tree, causing the hair on the back of my neck to stand up.
A panic suddenly engulfed everyone when the werewolves jumped out of everywhere.
"Save yourselves," Marion said, who was supposed to make other's her first priority, and ran into the woods with her family. The loudest screams of the witches being attacked by the werewolves pierced through my ears; everything was happening in front of my eyes since. I was constantly trying to free myself from the ropes, looking around with a plea in my eyes to everyone who had made eye contact with me. Nobody was helping me; I was forced to watch the horrifying scene with a realization that soon I will be next.
"Mother!" Through the hustle, I spotted my mother, who was all set to disappear in the forest. My heart was pounding so loudly that I couldn’t even hear the howling of the wind.
"Mother!" I called out for her again and she finally turned around to look at me, "Untie me, please!" it felt like the whole world went silent when my mother's eyes stared into mine. I was able to communicate with her through silence, my eyes were glued to her face as I begged her to help me.
The moment I noticed that her eyes were void of any emotions, my lips parted to heave a sigh and that’s when she mouthed, "I'm sorry!" I couldn’t make sense of her words, my mind refusing to accept she was going to leave me alone here to die.
I frantically looked around where I found my best friend. She wouldn’t leave alone, right? We have been there for each other since we were born. She looked scared and worried looking around as if trying to find a way out.
“Keera!” I shouted as loud as I could amidst the chaos, she turned and looked at me, her eyes widening as she took a step towards me. I took a sigh of relief, at least there is someone who won’t abandon me.
Suddenly, she took a step back, taking me by surprise. Her eyes widened more in fear, following her line of sight, I could see a beast approaching me. I turned to look at Keera who was already retreating to save herself.
“Keera! Wait! I-” she looked at me shaking her head in denial as she turned, making a run to escape leaving me tied between these wolves to die, just like my mother did.
My entire world crashed right before my eyes when the people I was supposed to save, left me tied to the tree and ran away for their lives. My entire life ran through my eyes, the time I spent with my mother, with my coven. The love and affection I had seen in their eyes, the promise we held to protect each other. It was all gone, as if it was a mere dream.
"HELP !!" I shouted once all I could see was werewolves around me. I was like a piece of meat on a stake for them. They were growling and walking in circles while I was tied to a damn tree, not even able to move. Suddenly, the wolves attacked me and I passed out in fear.
"Wake up, how dare you not bow before the king!" a strong nudge to my shoulder jolted me awake in fright. I tried to lift my body up but I was too bruised to even move a muscle, that’s when I felt like covering my body with my hands as the piece of clothing I was wearing wasn’t able to save me from the hungry eyes from around.
Once I was able to get a good grip over reality and looked around, I found myself in a hall of justice, where the punishments for the witches like me would be decided.
I was hugging myself while shivering at the same time. Seeing people around me watching me with so much hate in their eyes was really dehumanizing.
"You thought you would practice magic and my knights wouldn't find out?" Uziel's loud voice penetrated my ears to get my attention. I instantly looked his way and bowed down. Seeing me bowing in respect made him shake his head in disbelief after he grunted.
"You didn't respect my orders, but now you are bowing because you know you are about to get punished," His voice held so much rage and anger in it. I have heard a lot about him, in fact, I only grew up hearing about how ruthless and monster-like he was.
The stories I used to hear in my childhood when my mother told me to sleep before the monster arrives seemed to have met a reality when I saw Uziel glaring at me.
"I didn't d---," I uttered under my breath with tears blurring my vision. I've been left by my own people, my own mother and captured by the werewolves, who were going to punish me and I've yet to shed tears that were not going to help me in any way.
"Silence!" He screamed and the uttering from the people subsided too.
“The crime you have committed shall be punished, the witches like you will learn a lesson from your punishment and think twice before practising magic again.” He grunted,
"On the coronation of my son, Conrad Elsher, we will burn this witch as a symbol for those who break the rules set by the alpha king." Uziel got up from his throne and announced my fate whilst I watched him in misery.
I was getting dragged by the guards in front of everyone like I was trash. I was then left in a dungeon for starvation and cold for an undefined time until the coronation."Why?" I asked myself as I sat against the wall curling into a ball by lifting my knees to my chest. I couldn’t stop the sobs that left my lips as the betrayal of my mother, my best friend, and my coven flashed through my eyes. The people I was ready to sacrifice myself for, the people I've promised to fight for. What's sad was that they had left me tied up between those vicious werewolves, knowing well I wouldn't even be able to defend myself. My heart was trembling at the thought of the punishment they had chosen for me. It was the same for everyone: burning at the stake in front of their pack.I was shivering beyond control, my mind was engulfed by all these questions, one being, why? Why did my mother leave me? My entire body was aching with starvation as my coven had starved me for
I was still in the dungeon, cold and bruised. My throat had been dying for a drop of water and my stomach had rats chewing upon whatever was leftover."You have to perform this act of how apologetic you are in front of Kruz before you even open your mouth in front of Prince Conrad." The lady was known for teaching and educating the prisoners. Her stern look and straight posture was enough to fill anyone's viens with fright. She has been the one helping me to recite the apology I was supposed to say."And make sure you don't delay in responding to Kruz, he might think you are showing him attitude and he does not play with attitudes." She had been repeating the same thing about Kruz for hours now. Every time my eyes demanded to shut close, I would pinch myself into waking up.Soon Kruz entered the dungeon and the woman left, leaving the cell to give us some privacy. He walked straight in front of me and postured straight to listen to what I've prepared as an apolo
I was trembling while following his orders. I had a bad experience by defying Kruz, I was not going to repeat my mistake. I walked all the way in front of the bed and stood with my body touched down due to the pain in my stomach. The TV was playing behind my back when he lifted his arm to switch it off with the remote controller. Now that he was busy taking the food tray to the side, I noticed he was in black jeans and a black buttoned shirt, whose upper buttons were all left open."Take out the tray," I heard him talking to his maid on the phone and then hanging up. In a matter of a few seconds, a maid joined us and grabbed the tray out of the room."Cornelia?" He was still not looking at me, Conrad got up from his bed and went inside his bathroom to wash his hands."Cordelia Gabriel!" I mumbled, slowly raising my face to see if he could even listen to me from that far. The moment he got out of the bathroom and appeared in my sight again, I hurriedly lowere
"I will give you head start of 3 minutes, run as far as you can in these 3 minutes, and if you are able to win this game, the freedom is yours." Conrad and Kruz drove me to the woods to start the game that they knew they would win. We were standing with the car when they were stating the same thing to me. My legs that were uncovered were numb due to the cold. It worried me into thinking how was I going to make a run for my life when my legs are not even ready to move a muscle. I looked around in the darkness and the fear consumed me. Not only was it cold and the only thing I was wearing was a jacket, but my body was numb by all the beatings from earlier."And imagine if you are able to outrun us, you'll be a free person," Kruz repeated what Conrad had said as he stood behind Conrad in black jeans and a white shirt. The prince was in the same attire as earlier, he had just worn a jacket over his shirt. My eyes and mind were more focused on my surroundings than t
Once Kruz had left me on Conrad's door, I heard his loud grunt to let me know that I was invited in. I entered the room and was quickly mortified to see him in his boxers only. He didn't flinch but I was scared for my life. I had already seen his abs even when I had shut my eyes down the instant I realized he was shirtless.I hurriedly turned my face down and gulped. What were his intentions?"Lock the door." He ordered very calmly. My body had begun to feel numb in terror. I had been sheltered from the outside world since I was a child, they always told me that I was supposed to be protected because I was their last hope. Now that I was in a room with an Alpha, whose mood swings had no limits, I felt like being betrayed by the entire world. I did what he said and soon we were alone in a locked room. The only lights were the white led's around the roof."You blew up such a big chance." He stated, it didn't seem like he aimed to wear a shirt anytime soon. He was
I watched him being restless in the bed, he would constantly begin to shift and then go back to his human form while not being able to get out of the nightmare. It seemed painful, only by the looks of his bones twisting and going back to place was enough to cause me fatigue, I could only imagine the tiredness he must be feeling. My sleep had been long gone, he was in so much pain that I could hear his heavy breathing from that far. It took me some time to register but I did start to analyze his condition. And then it began to make sense. He was cursed! He didn't want a seer to hurt them, he wanted to know the prophecy. I then knew why he was so strong yet so miserable, why I could feel a mist around him.It wasn’t a mist; it was a curse that was always with him."Argh!" he broke free from the nightmare and sat up with an accelerated breaths and his eyes changing colors, keeping showing signs of transition to his wolf form.Once he was able to dra
"Get up! Your time has come." Brenda woke me up with a slam to the bars. I have fallen asleep after I felt like dying from the lack of food. At this point, I was feeling so miserable that if anybody asks me for my last wish, I would say a drop of water. As I rubbed my eyes to clear my sight, Brenda dropped a white dress in my feet to get ready. Sadly, every time I was asked to wear a new dress, it was because I was being prepared to take one step closer to my ending,"Hurry up! The coronation ceremony is about to start and I don't want to miss out on anything," this woman sounded ignorant to my situation, she didn't want to miss a ceremony while I had to get ready for my execution. I ended up silently changing into that dress, there was anyways no point in having an argument with her.I couldn’t even fight back because I knew they would drag me to the punishment ground by any means possible.Once I was ready, she spun around to stare at me and then a chuckl
"What is her birth certificate going to do? What use is it for us?" As expected, Uziel didn't know the importance of a witch's birth certificate that was made with magic when they are born. I was even surprised that Conrad had found out about the importance of the birth certificate somehow. Since he was desperate to uncover all important secrets behind the curse he was put under, he was going at limits to find more about it.My body was trembling beyond my control because I denied to ever be enslaved to these werewolves. The sad part was that I didn’t know much about the link thing. It was something I wasn’t taught as most of the magic spells were in the books that had been stolen from us."When a witch's birth certificate is signed by a blood of a person and burned in their presence, the witch is forever linked to the person and she can never leave him or even stay away from him for too long. Betraying him will only cause her pain, and this type of relationship is only painfu
It has been a few days since everything. Conrad has been all over me as I overexerted myself during the ritual. I have barely left the room. He gets me everything I would need. As sweet as it was, it was also a little annoying not being able to move or roam around. I am thankful to Uziel for getting Conrad off my back. He has called for a pack meeting and requested my presence. I hope everything is alright. He never really calls for meeting so suddenly. I sighed as I made my way to the meeting hall. I could see the room filled with pack members. Conrad and Uziel were standing on the makeshift stage at the end of the room. Conrad extended his hand, and I gratefully accepted it as he helped me on the stage. Uziel stood at the center with Conard next to him while I stood comfortably next to Conrad. His hand wrapped around my waist and it made me a little shy with the fact that we had the pack members watching our every move. Uziel cleared h
Everything happened in a blur; Conrad had made sure to get Kruz’s body away before I even opened my eyes. Clara, on the other hand, tried her best to free herself. I could see her struggle, her agony on not being able to perform magic. I wanted her to feel every bit of the pain she has inflicted on me. I wanted her to know how to it feels to be helpless. Tears continued to stream down her face, and surprisingly enough, I did not feel upset seeing her that way. “Please, let me go. I promise, I would never bother you again.” She pleaded “You still have audacity to think you could be forgiven?” Uziel asked, his anger and hatred clear in his voice, and the way she flinched, she knew it was for her. “Please, I am sorry. Let me go. I promise to never come back.” She pleaded pathetically making me scoff. “Cordelia, please, help me.” She pleaded with me; it didn’t affect like it normally would. “After everything you did, you still expect me to
After we have shared the vows, both of us stared at each other to signal that we were ready. “You may now mark the bride,” Uziel smiled at Conrad, who tossed his face to me and then looked around. Clara and Kruz were standing very close to us, as I said, there were not many people attending the wedding. “I have a concern,” I suddenly objected and that led both Clara and Kruz to share a glance and then watch me. “We don’t have time, Cordelia.” Clara spoke very anxiously; her eyes weren’t able to focus on one spot. She was quickly looking around to avoid eye contact at any cost. “Maybe she is not ready to help her husband out yet,” Kruz tried to play mind games, pressuring me into showing my sincerity for Conrad.“You are just a Beta, don’t speak on the behalf of your Queen,” Conrad, who had been desperately waiting to punish Kruz, muttered and it shocked him. Kruz had been with him since they were kids, that’s when he thought he deserved more power than him. "I
We couldn’t sleep the whole night. I told him everything in the next few hours."I can't believe Kruz wants me gone." Conrad and I had been lying naked under a blanket and cuddled up. Now that he knew everything, we didn't really need those."When I was first brought here, he as*aulted me in the dungeon," I still recalled everything he had done to me. I noticed Conrad pulling away from me and sitting in the bed, he was staring at me with a frown on his forehead, "the day your father found me using magic, I was actually saving myself from him because he was - - - he was going to r*** me." once I finished, he made tight fists of his hands and tried to get out of the bed but I grasped his arm and pulled him back."We have to be very careful about what we do, we have no idea who else they have under them. They might have casted a spell on most of the mansion, let's not do anything in haste." I rubbed his hand between my hands to calm him down as he breathed heavily like a bull.
"What? I don't know what you are saying. Why would I want your virginity?" He shook his head and started dialing her number again.I knew what was happening and how he can break this spell, well, the answer was right there.Only he can break this spell and set himself free."Because you won't be able to feel my touch after tomorrow." now that I knew Selene won't be able to read his mind or hear what I was saying since she was long asleep, I started opening up to him. There was a mist forming in his eyes, I knew he was feeling helpless and bad for not being able to hold me tight and tell me it will be fine, like he would always do. I remember I used to push him away because of the people around us, because of that link, but I was now realising how much his hug, his arms had boosted my confidence in the past. Yes! we humans do take smallest things for granted but when we lose them only then we realise how important and how special they were to us."What do you me---an,"
I stole my eyes from Clara and began to brainstorm an excuse. The instant Uziel got upo from his seat and left for his room, I cleared mu throat to explain my motives. “I wanted to know why my mother tried to kill me. I just cannot understand that she did it only for power, she loved me.” I was lying out of my mind, fearing if she would even believe me at this point but then she passed me a sad smile and it gave me enough confident to keep moving on.“Cordelia! Evil people dpnt need reasons to hurt ypu, they just find a way to do it and they do it,” now that I was aware of her true intentions, her fake smile and comforting tone was not enough to console me. “You are right!” I whispered under my breath and noticed Kruz and Conrad leaving the table. I knew Kruz only stayed behind to make sure I wasn’t doing anything behind their backs or I have not got up on them. “What is happening between you and Conrad? I noticed the change in his attitude towards you, I thought you
I was sprinting to Uziel’s room, my heart was beating like a drum and my skin covered in goosebumps. Somebody has to listen to me or they will succeed in their evil plans. Before knocking on his door, I gathered myself together and plastered a fake smile across my lips. He opened the door and stared at me in confusion, I don’t think he was expecting me to pay him a visit and disturb his peace. “I am so sorry your highness, but the matter in hand was important. Clara and I want to get the access to the books of magic, we are preparing for the ritual and i---,” I don’t think he wanted me to explain, he was ready to do anything for his son. “Here, please make sure everything goes perfectly.” He had the same misery in his eyes that he had when he asked me last time to help his son. I took the keys from his hand and gave him a satisfactory smile, despite being heavily scared and confused myself. He didn’t even know that his son was now even under some kind of spell. I mar
I kept listening to her and the more I heard, the more I shivered in my skin. But she wasn’t alone neither was she on the call. It seemed as there was somebody inside with her. “The plan is simple; Conrad is not getting free from this curse.” There was content in her tone as if she had no worries that it was living person she was talking about. “But why did the crystal show Cordelia as his mate?” My stomach formed a knot when I recognized the voice. I had to cover my mouth to prevent the gasp of horror heaving my lips. Kruz!It was Kruz with Clara.“Imogen had decided to kill two birds with one stone.” Listening my mother’s name from her lips hit me like a bullet, “She wants Cordelia dead so that she can get the powers for herself because as long Cordelia lives, there will be a fear among us, she will never let us hurt Conrad or the pack. Tomorrow when Conrad marks her, the ritual we will perform will not lift up the curse but kill his mate. After she is dead,
We have all been gathered by Clara in the living room at night time where she wanted to discuss the ritual in detail. Now I understood that even if I was not related to the witch who had cursed Conrad, I would have still not been able to lift the curse because of how unprepared I was. She had put out different things this time, there was a crystal ball on the desk that I don’t remember being used in this ritual. “This is a new thing for you, I bought it for a purpose.” Clara watched me eyeing the crystal and it made her mention me, “There are a few steps that we need to take in order to completely free him from this ritual.” She stated and then started explaining it in detail, “In these three days, we will need to do it on the day of his wedding, right after he marks his mate.” As she announced, my heart flipped inside my chest and I tossed my face to Conrad, who looked very shocked as well. “Mate?” Conrad repeated and then shook his head, “I already have one.” He didn’t
