Napapailing siya while she hurried out. But those gray eyes bothered her at may naramdaman siya ng kaba at kaunting takot. Piniling niya ang ulo trying to shake her negative thoughts. It cannot be. Madiin nyang sambit sa isip.
Dumaan muna siya isang Starbucks at one of the commercial spaces of the building to buy a cold drink. She’s so screwed today.
She booked a Grab and waited. Tumayo siya para kunin ang kanyang order pero sa halip na inumin she rested her cheek on it.
She can’t show up na may namamagang pisngi. Alam nyang pinag titinginan siya ng ibang mga tao sa cafe but she did not care. She was G. Gabriel, afterall. Best-selling novelist with millions of her novels sold and translated into different languages. She did not work to get contracts signed. Production studios chased after her to tie her stories in.
No one dared put their hand on her kaya hindi niya lubos akalain that Lisa would slap her. She kept the cold drink to her face and kept adding to the tissue as it soaked up the condensation. She stood up once her ride notified her that it was close. She walked briskly to the gate and patiently waited.
“MATT!” LISA CRIED and skirted around Matt’s bodyguard para makalapit dito.
Hindi pa ito lubusang nakalapit when Matt put up his hand to stop Lisa from going even nearer.
Matthew Wilson, owner of a chain of luxury hotels around the world. He came down to the studio for the official signing supposedly of Lisa Samuel as the new face of his casino. Lisa just turned 21, came with new fame and money. The best representative of their target market, they want the young ones and their money to their casino and clubs, stripping off the stereotype that casinos are for the retirees. They were not aiming for her fans but rather for youth like her.
Disappointment crossed Matt’s face. Tiningnanniya ang pisngi ni Lisa. It was no good for any press conference today.
Footsteps can be heard approaching them and breathing as if trying to catch her breath.
“Cancel the press conference,” Matt said coldly as the footsteps just stopped behind him.
“Boss?” nagtataka namang sagot ni Melissa. She was Matt’s trusty secretary. Her feet hurt in her Manolo Blahnik’s as she ran around to catch up with her boss. Clad in a conservative but tasty Max Mara black blazer and pants. She was expected to dress her best as Matt’s secretary. “Boss, do you want me to move it to another date?”
“No, cancel it,” Matt clarified but was looking at Lisa’s Manager.
“Mr. Wilson -- Sir,” agad na react ni Kathy to what Matt said. “We will apologize to Miss G. Sir, it was just a misunderstanding.”
“I don’t want an endorser that will hit someone just because she misunderstands,” sagot ni Matt. And to Melissa, “Clean it up.”
“Yes, sir,” Agad naman na sagot ng kanyang secretary.
Matt turned and walked off.
Melissa turned back and signaled that she will call to Kathy.
“BOSS, WE STILL NEED someone on the cover of the Hotel’s Magazine,” paalala naman ni Melissa kay Matt.
“Call Lexie,” utos ni Matt dito. Referring to Alexandra Valdez- Montenegro, ang may bahay ng kaibigan ni Matt na si Lucas Montenegro.
“For a casino, boss? Hindi po papayag si Miss Lexie.”
“No, bring the resort shoot with Leon forward.”
“Boss, hindi papayag si Doc Lucas that I will drag her wife and kids to Maldives nang ganun na lang.” Leon was now five years old at two years old naman ang kambal ng mag-asawa.
His secretary used to cower when talking to him. “Melissa!”
“Boss, natatakot kasi kay Doc Lucas.” paliwanag naman nito agad. Lexie’s schedules all went through Jewel - Lucas’ secretary and anything na dumadaan kay Jewel passed through the eagle eyes of Lucas kung hindi man isumbong agad ni Jewel dito.
Matt stopped in front of the entrance. His driver rounded to the driver’s seat, hindi naman agad pumasok ng sasakyan si Matt. “I’ll make the call.”
“Thank you, Boss,” malapad na napangiti si Melissa. She even opened the car door for Matt.
Matt was about to step into the car when he turned to Melissa again. He raised a finger,
“I’ll have the endorsement contract canceled. All travel arrangements for Miss Lexie and her kids arranged in two days,” inunahan na agad ni Melissa si Matt.
“Good, but I was not about to say that,” Matt looked at what Melissa was wearing,” Stop shopping for sale items at Nordstrom.” sabi nito and entered the vehicle. Matt smiled when he closed his door -- Takot pala kay Lucas pero hindi sa kanya ha.
THE CAR WAS EXITING the gate when Matt spotted Gabby on the sidewalk. She had a cold drink to one of her cheeks at panaka-naka ang tingin sa cellphone nito.
“Romy, ihinto mo,” he said and pointed to where Gabby was standing.
It has been awhile - four years since he split with Jessica, and he was never genuinely interested in someone since. But he was never without a date or nawalan nang kahit na sino connected to him. But there was something about the writer he was very curious about.
Romy rolled the car to a stop and Matt rolled the window down.
“Hi, do you need a ride?” He looked up to her and he saw the shock and fear cross her eyes briefly.
“No. But Thanks.” Gabby curtly answered. She put down the drink na dinidikit niya sa pisngi ang lightly tapped dry her moist cheek.
“Where are you going?” Tanong pa ni Matt ulit. His eyes briefly moved to her cheek and he was somewhat relieved it was not as bad as Lisa’s face. He quickly scanned her features. Mestiza, he smiled inwardly, his favorite. Probably Fil-American with what looked like natural dark brown hair, a prominent nose, and full pinkish lips. There was also a splattering of some freckles on her cheeks and nose. Adorable.
Gabby frowned and closed her eyes briefly calming herself. She can’t believe she was approached in late afternoon by what she suspected was one of those young, rich businessmen who kept actresses for their bed games. And that face!
“I can give you a lift,” Matt added.
“Mister, if your expensive watch,” Gabby looked at the time piece on his wrist,”is not working, it’s only 4 pm, parang masiyado pang maaga para mag umpisa ang trabaho nang hinahanap mo. And for the record I am not one of them.”
Matt can’t help laughing. “I have not even introduced myself yet,” he said and opened the door meaning to go out and properly charm her.
Napaatras naman si Gabby and looked at her phone. She raised her hand to a Grab car that finally came to pick her up.
“Pervert,” malakas nyang sinabi before she left and got inside the car.
Matt followed her with his eyes until she got inside the car, bumalik din ito sa sasakyan agad.
“Romy, follow that car,” utos ni Matt sa driver.
“Sir?”
“Don’t let it get away.”
They were tailing the grab car na sinakyan ni Gabby.
Matt sighed. He was sure she knew they were tailing. But he did not have enough time as he needed to go to the airport. But he still smiled, he likes it when women play a little hard to get.
“Romy, let’s go to the airport now,” he ordered then took out his phone to call someone.
“Nico,” bati ni Matt sa tinawagan as soon as the call connected.
“Yes?” Nico answered.
“I want you to check someone out for me.”
“Problem with your security? I did not get any from the team’s last report.” Nico said. Nico owned a security and intelligence company and he provided services to the richest of the rich. And Matt was one of his biggest clients, all of Matt’s hotels were secured by their systems and security forces.
“Not really.”
“Who is it?”
“G. Gabriel.”
“The novelist?”
“How did you know?”
“Ally reads her stuff.”
“I want you to get me all her information.”
“For?”
“You have too many questions,” naiinis naman na balik ni Matt.
“We are invading her privacy. I want to know what for.”
“I want her in my bed. Satisfied?” sagot ni Matt.
Nico laughed on the other line.
Matt ended the call with a smile on his lips.
NAPAHUGOT NG MALALIM NA HININGA si Gabby as soon as she was inside the vehicle. Her heart was still racing. It cannot be. She had an opportunity to look at that face longer at binalot ng takot ang puso nya.
She looked and she saw the Black BMW Series 7 following a few cars back. It wasn’t exactly trying to secretly tail them.
“Kuya,” tawagniya grab driver, “huwag nyo po muna akong ihatid agad. Pwede po tayong magpa-ikot-ikot muna? Dadagdagan ko po yung bayad.” She passed a few bills to the driver.
“Sige po ma’am. Pero kailangan po muna natin dumaan doon pa rin sa destination nyo para ma mark ko na nadrop-off ko na kayo.”paliwanang ng grab driver.
“Sige po, huwag lang po kayo hihinto.”
Gabby chewed her lips carefully as her destination passed by. She took out her phone and quickly sent a message na malalate siya.
Gabby turned around to check behind. She was relieved when the BMW finally turned on the next right turn. Finally, she was dropped off at her correct destination. She was an hour and thirty minutes late.
She crossed without a problem at the gate. Lakad-takbo ang ginawa niya to the waiting area.
“Mommy!” malakas na bati ng batang lalaki. The small boy jumped out of a small chair and rushed to her.
Lumuhod naman siya so they were eye-level. She spread her arms at sabik-na-sabik itong yumakap.
“You’re late.” the little boy directly said.
“Sorry, Baby.” she quickly said sorry and kissed his cheek. She picked him up and brought him to another small chair where a baby girl was sleeping with her head on the desk. She stroked her hair na naka takip sa mukha nito. Gabby smiled when she saw the drool on the paper.
“Teacher Martha, I’m sorry I’m late. I had trouble at work.” Gabby apologized to the twins’ teacher na sinamahan ang mga ito while waiting for her.
“No prob, Miss G.” nakangiti namang sagot ng guro. “Basta pa autograph ako.”
Napangiti naman si Gabby. She sat in another chair and signed the books na inabot ng guro.
She gently wiped the drool from her Baby girl’s face at maingat na kinarga.
“Chico, are you okay with walking?” tanong niya sa anak. They were five years old already.
“Yes, mommy.” Chico looked up.
Gabby tried to calm her heart. It was a kid version of the face that was looking up at her from his car’s window.
“Mommy, what happened to your face?”Chico asked as he looked at her red cheeks. His gray eyes were worried.
“Mommy, what happened to your face?”Nakauwi na sila but Chico was still repeating his question. She already said she bumped ito something.“Baby, It was mommy’s fault. I was not looking.” She placed a pillow by her side so she won’t roll and fall. She went to the kitchen to prepare their dinner at nakasunod pa rin ang anak na lalaki.“Did someone hurt you, Mommy?” diretsang tanong nito.Napangiti naman siya. Chico loves acting tough kasi hindi na raw ito baby, something he always reminded her lately. Gabby turned once she reached the center island, she pulled a chair for Chico a
Gabrielle Gabriel. Gabby had very little luck early in life. She was told that she was left at the door of St. Gabriel Cathedral when she was a newborn. And that’s how she came to have the last name, Gabriel. And as if a joke by the nuns na kumupkop sa kanya, they named her Gabrielle, nakakalito tuloy when she had to say her name in full. She left the convent the convent when she reached Eighteen and tried to find her place in the world. She would have come back at nag madre kung hindi siya nakahanap ngiba pang dahilan para manatili sa secular world kung tawagin ng mga madre. She might not have had a conventional family but she had a huge family. She was clothed, fed, and educated by the nuns. She slept at the convent. She had her own room. She had simple things but she had enough.“Mommy, add more colors, please. Make it pwetty.&r
THE HOTEL WAS EXTRAVAGANTLY decorated for the Halloween party. Sa pagpasok pa lang nila sa lobby, it was as if the Disney parade was transferred to the hotel. This is the second week of the event but the most anticipated kasi nga Halloween. Tonight's event was also a fundraiser. She was holding one in each hand and carefully checking where they were going. Napasigaw si Mango when she turned and found another kid in a scary costume. Takot na takot ito and quickly hugged Gabby’s leg.“Baby, Baby, it’s just a costume.” Napilitan syang kargahin ito as Mango was scared and spooked already.Nag-alala tuloysiya sa kay Chico. “Anak, are you okay?” tanong nya
Gabby was woken up by a text message tone on her phone. 6 AM.There were not that many people na tatawag o nagte-text sa kanya nang ganoon kaaga. She opened it.This is Matt Wilson. Call me once you read this.Agad na napaupo sya. Napasapo siya ng noo. She looked at the curt message on her phone again. She didn’t know how he got her number but a man like him looked like he had means. She just held on to her phone. Kailangan nya pang mag-isip.Inayos niya ang kumot ng mga anak and tip-toed to the bathroom and freshened up before she went to the kitchen. She put the phone on the counter and made coffee. She was making batter for pancakes
Halos lumuwa naman ang mata ni Gabby. No one ever talked to her that way. She tried to take her hand again.Matt interlaced their fingers instead.“You’re - You’re rude!” She gritted her teeth.“I am just being honest. We already have babies. What’s the problem?” Matt turned his head and smiled at her before he faced front again.“My babies. My kids!” madiin ang bawat kataga na pagtatama naman ni Gabby.“We’ll see, Gab. We’ll see.” Sagot ni Matt.He let Gabby have her hand when she pulled it again.
They were not on their way back to her condo. She hated sitting beside him. She was irritated na suot-suot niya pa rin ang coat nito. She was so stupid to wear a flimsy, lace bra underneath a satin blouse. She did not want to embarrass herself further so she decided to wear his coat until she splits up with him.“I have to go home.” dugtong niya sa sinabi.“It’s only 8 pm. You ate too fast. We still have time.”“Just tell me where we are going.”“Let’s get the bears for the twins.”“We don’t have to. If the hotel won’t send it over, I can pick it up tomorrow
“Mommy!” “We get a daddy. You hear that, Chico?” Chico shrugged Mango’s hand and held tighter to Gabby’s neck.Mango was not bothered and sat back on Matt’s lap. “So are you mommy’s Boyfie?”Pulang-pula naman na ang mukha ni Gabby.“Yep. I‘m her boyfriend.” Matt answered. He smiled while intentionally avoiding looking at Gabby and just focused on Mango.“You’re like Teacher Jason to Teacher Martha. He waits for her then they go home together,” daldal ni Mango. “Are you going to pick

Yun ang tawag sa mga drives to the safari looking for animals in their natural environment. The reason why people flock to the Africa. There are game drives in the morning, at mayroon din sa hapon. The best times are during the dawn hours and at dusk when the animals are busiest. The weather is cool, the game are either hunting or drinking. And the likelihood of spotting them are high. The drive normally takes about 3 hours but they were already back after just two. “You are back early, madam,” bati sa kanya ng butler na naka toka sa safari villa nila. He was very lean and very tall, characteristic of the Maasai tribe of Kenya. His skin was very dark against the crisp white of the short sleeved polo he was wearing. Gabby has seen Chege in his Maasai traditional clothes before, a red cloth over his shoulder and across his chest and wore numerous beaded necklaces and bracelets and he looked fierce in it, but he always had a smile and h
Sinalat ni Matt ang noo ni Gabby. She woke up from the movement. “Hey, morning,” a smiling Matt greeted her, his voice low. He moved his hand and felt her neck with the back of his hand. “You are all good, no fever,” he added before dropping a kiss on her lips. Gabby’s cheeks flushed with the recollection of how she came down with a fever after their first time together. She was still wearing Matt’s shirt. She already had pajamas on. She realized, binihisan siya nito and carried her to bed last night. She glanced at the twins na tulog na tulog pa din. “Sorry that woke you up. You can get back to sleep. We still have a couple of hours.” ani Matt, not leaving and still sitting on her side of the bed.Pero bumangon na rin si Gabby, she stopped herself from winching, her legs were aching, and every part of her body. “I need to pack,” sambit niya but she remained seated on the bed. Pinapakiramdaman if strength is back to her legs. “Done.” Kiniling ni Matt ang ulo pointing to the lugga
The sea was bluer than usual and the sky was clearer. The trees that lined the street below even looked greener. “Mommy, let’s go,” malakas na tawag ni Mango from the living room. “Yes, baby. Five minutes,” sagot niya dito. She just half dried her hair at nilagyan ng kaunting leave-on hair conditioner. Her hair was not cooperating and was giving her riot curls. She checked herself in the mirror. Matt said lalabas lang sila para mamili ng ilang gamit for their safari vacation. She wore a black track pants, a white shirt and threw on a black, zipped Philipp Plein track top. The twins picked it for her. It had cartoon monsters printed on it.
“DO YOU BELIEVE HIM?” Tanong ni Nico kay Matt. Kaaalis lang ni Lio and they were left in the cigar room. Matt was still frowning, still thinking of everything he had heard. “There is something off.“ Pauna niya. He slowly poured another shot of whisky into his glass. “Like it was a partial truth?” ani ni Nico. He also had an unlighted cigar in his hand. He brought it closer to his nose to smell the premium tobacco but his eyes never left Matt. “Yes.” Nico took an envelope from inside his jacket and slid it to Matt. “Personally picked up and delivered.” “Thanks, bro.” Matt grabbed the mid-size brown envelope. He looked at the address first. It was very indistinct but it carried the name of the laboratory from the US. He opened it and quickly ran his eyes on the few pieces of paper inside. He neatly folded it and placed it back on the envelope, tsaka isinuksok sa inner pocket ng sariling jacket. “So?” Nico widely smiled. He has been with Matt since they were starting out
Lio flipped a coin between his fingers. His eyes tracked Matt until Matt occupied a solo seat in the living room. He continued to look around, he stopped flipping the coin when his eyes met Nico’s sharp gaze. “So, G is not invited to the conversation?” Lio asked and sat back comfortably. He was wearing a tan button-down shirt, sunglasses in his shirt pocket, and dark brown pants. “You might want to start talking before you overstay your welcome,” Nico interjected. He comfortably leaned on the counter of the small kitchen of the suite. “I want to talk to G first.” was Lio’s response. Sandaling nagtinginan muna si Nico at Matt before Matt turned to look away and stared at the view outside with his jaw clenched. Nico moved and walked to the bedroom, paglabas nito ay nakasunod na si Gabby. Saglit namang sinulyapan ni Gabby si Matt but he was looking away from her. A sharp pain pierced her heart. Sa maikling panahong nakilala niya ito, he always had his eyes on her, as if he k
Matt was a benefactor of the center. There was no time to be alone which was a relief for her. Matt had a formal meeting with the sisters. He asked her to come with him pero nagdahilan siyang aayusin ang mga inihandang pasalubong para kay Sister Mary. May nagpresentang tulungan siya. Bumalik sila sa sasakyan at naroon din ang isang pang sasakyan that escorted them. She may never get used to it pero napansin niyang Matt rarely travelled alone. “We need the boxes,” she politely asked one of the armed men na kasama nila. He just called someone somewhere
“MOMMY, IS LOLA EXPECTING US?” tanong ni Mango. “Yes, anak.” Gabby was fixing Mango’s hair. Maingat na tinitirintas ang buhok nito. She placed ribbons as she braided her hair. The corner of Mango’s lips slightly up in a contained smile habang pinapanood nito ang ginagawa niya sa salamin. “Are we staying with lola?” Tanong ulit ni Mango. “No, baby, we will just visit.” Sandaling sinulyapan niya rin ito sa salamin. “Mommy, are we going to see Simba?” patuloy ang makulit na pagtatanong ni Mango, she even started kicking her feet in the air, palatandaang excited ito. Mango watched Lion King over and over on the tablet since they arrived in the hotel the day before. “We will ask Daddy, okay? He may need to be back for work.” “But daddy said we can.” Hard-headed. Matt’s voice echoed in Gabby’s head. She needs to tell Matt to be firmer with Mango. “I’m going to ask Daddy, Mommy.” Mango looked so pitiful with her expression. But Gabby was aware na inuuto lang siya ng anak. She was a
“LET ME CARRY YOU, BABY,” Matt gently coaxed Mango na buhat-buhat na ni Gabby. “No!” Pilit itong ginising ni Gabby to prepare for their flight and the girl was now in a bad mood. “You’re so big now for mommy to carry you, Mango.” Chico said at tiningnan nang masama ang kapatid. Mango stuck her tongue out to Chico at mahigpit na yumakap sa ina. “Brat.” Chico murmured. “Don’t cry. It will mean that you are intentionally being difficult right now. Mommy understands you are still sleepy and I can still carry you.” Marahang niyang hinaplos ang buhok nito. Nakatulog nga ulit si Mango before they were even picked up from the hotel. “Let me.” Maingat na inilipat niya si Mango to Matt’s arms. Inayos niya din ang nagusot na blouse ng anak and covered her back with the light wool coat na ayaw nitong isuot. The weather in Dubai at night was a
HE CARRIED HER OFF THE BED at inilang hakbang lang nito ang daybed na nasa isang sulok ng kwarto. He laid her on it before he reached out for throw blanket on one of the chairs. Mabilis itong nahiga sa tabi niya, fixed the one pillow on it that Chico left on the daybed earlier and he threw the blanket over them. She scooted to the end of the narrow daybed, trying to put some space between them at patagilid na nahiga. “You’re going to fall over,” bulong nito. Nilingkis nito ang kamay sa bewang niya and pulled her closer. Her back feels good against his chest. He was hard but warm. “Why did you run away?” binasag nito ang katahimikan. “Don't just tell me you are sorry,” pahabol na sambit nito. She took her time thinking of what to tell him. Inabot naman ni Matt ang isang kamay ni Gabby, he traced her fingers first
