THE HOTEL WAS EXTRAVAGANTLY decorated for the Halloween party. Sa pagpasok pa lang nila sa lobby, it was as if the Disney parade was transferred to the hotel. This is the second week of the event but the most anticipated kasi nga Halloween. Tonight's event was also a fundraiser. She was holding one in each hand and carefully checking where they were going.
Napasigaw si Mango when she turned and found another kid in a scary costume. Takot na takot ito and quickly hugged Gabby’s leg.
“Baby, Baby, it’s just a costume.” Napilitan syang kargahin ito as Mango was scared and spooked already.
Nag-alala tuloysiya sa kay Chico. “Anak, are you okay?” tanong nya agad dito.
Chico nodded, still fascinated with all the decoration. She was relieved he did not look afraid.
Tinunton nya ang Grand hall.
“Need help?” someone said behind her.
“Oh, I’m okay.”
The man was wearing a tuxedo and a phantom mask. She was immediately skeptical about him.
“I’m going to the grand hall too.” anito.
Tumaas naman ang kilay ni Gabby. The party was for kids at wala itong dalang bata. There were also other halloween parties in the hotel for his age.
The guy made a half-laugh. “Tito duties. They are already inside.” He was already reaching for Mango in Gabby’s arms.
“Mommy, don’t talk to strangers,” Agad na sabat ni Chico. He moved to stand before Gabby na animo ay ipagtatanggol ang ina.
“Hello there.” said the guy and kneeled before Chico. Itinaas naman nito ang maskarang suot and smiled. He looked intently at Chico. “Let’s remedy that big boy. I’m Niam Bernados.” He even extended his hand.
Chico looked up at Gabby first and waited for his mom to nod before he accepted the handshake.
“And your name, sir?” Niam continued to talk to Chico.
“Theo,” He answered. Gabby can feel na nagustuhan ng anak that the guy was talking to him like he was a big boy already.
“I think you don’t need my help,” ani Niam that earned him a smile from Chico. “But this little girl does.” He took Mango from Gabby.
Gabby was about to protest when Niam started walking. They were forced to follow behind him.
Why did she give Mango? She was not giving a good examples to her children.
“What’s your name pretty girl?” tanong ni Niam kay Mango.
“Mango,” she answered cutely.
“Like the fruit?”
“Yes, mommy loves it.”
“What’s mommy’s name?”
“Miss G”
Natawa naman si Niam sa sagot nito.
Gabby gave a sigh of relief when they reached the Grand Hall. Mas lalo pang maganda ang Grand hall than the lobby. Mango squirmed in Niam’s arms at gustong magpababa.
Niam put the toddler down. He looked at the kids again before facing Gabby.
“Thank you, Niam?” Mabilis na pasalamat ni Gabby dito picking up his name nang magpakilala ito kanina.
“No prob. I’ll see you around, Miss G,” sabi nito sa kanya, smiled before he turned and left.
Gabby grabbed her kids’ hands and went the other way. Nilingon niya pa si Niam and saw a boy in a Woody of Toy Story costume, he could be the same age as her twins, run to Niam. He picked the boy up at itinaas pa over his head before he carried the boy in his arms.
She sighed and looked down. Chico was also looking back. Gabby bit her lip. She can’t carry Chico for long already at mabigat na ito. Parang may kumurot sa puso niya nang maisip that maybe he was jealous.
“Chic, you want to play airplane later?” Tanong niya dito.
“No, Mommy. I’m a big boy now.”
Maliban sa mga palabas in one area, there were also booths of famous children’s toys, meron din mga children’s books. There were games at every booth na pwedeng manalo from small toys to expensive ones and from drawing books to a whole set of the most sought-after children’s books.
So this was why the tickets were very expensive. Naisip ni Gabby. The event was not for everyone but still, proceeds went to a good cause. It’s just another one of those events the rich created to be enjoyed by the rich and proceeds went to the poor. It’s hard to find fault in it. The orphanage run by the convent relied on these types of events. There are donations but the rich seem to get tired of simply giving dole-outs and charity.
“Mommy, We won the big bear,” Tuwang-tuwang si Chico.
When the booth clerk showed them the bear, “Oh my,” tanging namutawi sa labi ni Gabby.
It won’t fit in their Land Cruiser. It might be one of those Bears used in huge display windows.
“Chic, it’s too big.” She didn’t want to disappoint Chico but the direct approach always worked with Chico.
“Give them the two bears.”
Gabby turned and it was Niam again but this time, he had a new guy with him in an old English man costume -- top hat and a cane -- na hawak-hawak ang batang lalaking sumalubong kanina kay Niam.
“Are you okay with two bears, Theo?” tanong ni Niam sa anak nya. “It’s still big.” turo pa nito sa bear na hawak na ng clerk. “And you can get one for you and one for baby Mango.” he turned to Mango and gave her a wink and a sweet smile.
Tumango naman si Chico and tugged Gabby’s hand to get her approval.
Gabby smiled her approval, she turned to the clerk.
“Get her address,” tuloy naman na utos ni Niam. “They can deliver those to you.”
Gabby filled up the form na inabot ng clerk while giving her kids a side-eye. She quickly finished filling up the form.
“This is my friend, Mark.” Pakilala ni Niam kay Gabby to Mark. “Miss G - “
Natawa naman sya, “No. It’s Gabby. Gabby Gabriel.” pagtatama nya naman sa pangalan nya.
“Why don’t you join us?” Alok ni Mark. “We have a table here.”
Nag-aalinlangan naman si Gabby. These were people she just met that day. “I don’t think that’s proper. But thank you.”
“Oh come on, you can trust us. Everyone knows us here.” ani Niam. He pulled out a business card from his wallet and gave it to her.
Engr. Niam Bernados. President. First Construction.
Dr. Mark Valdez. Director. Cardiology and Intensive Care Services. Montenegro Medical.
Gabby was not used to networking. Is this what happens at parties?
“I have a two-year old daughter,” sabi naman ni Mark and picked up Mango. “Mango, right?” tanong nito sa anak nya.
Tumango naman si Mango and took off Mark’s eyeglasses. Natawa lang ito sa ginawa ni Mango. He was already walking with her daughter.
“That’s Leon,” Niam supplied as they followed the boys. “That’s the son of our friend. We are babysitting.” Nakangiti nitong sabi.
“They also have twins who are not ready for this party yet. Two-year olds.” patuloy nitong pagkwekwento. “So they stayed home with Mark’s daughter while we go out and party-party.”
Natawa namansiya sa sinabi nito. He said it like he was enjoying the kid’s Halloween party a lot.
They reached the table and she was glad to give her feet some rest. There were a lot of benches scattered across the venue but most were constantly occupied by people who wanted to take pictures kaya nakakahiyang gawing pahingahan. She earlier planned na lumabas saglit para makapagpahinga ang kambal but this happened.
“We’ll just order some refreshments.” ani Mark and left with Niam. They left Leon with her sa kanyang pagkabigla. Paano na lang kung masamang tao sya. Tiningnan nya naman ang tatlong mga bata and they were happily talking and showing off the stars na tinatatak sa binigay na booklet/ passport when they entered.
---
“I TOLD YOU!” Napapalatak pa si Niam. “The kids look like Matt, right?”
“Had he returned call?” Tanong naman ni Mark.
“Not yet.”
“I’ve never seen her before.”
“Yeah, but she looks just like his type.” Natatawa at naiiling na sagot ni Niam.
“Call him again,” utos naman ni Mark.
Niam pulled out his phone again para tawagan ang kaibigan.
“Fxck!” Agad din hininaan ni Niam ang boses when he realized he was around kids. “Where are you? Kanina pa kami tumatawag.” Angil nito kay Matt.
“Meeting,” maiksing sagot Matt sa kabilang linya. “I’m on my way. Why?”
“You should see this girl. Totally your type.”
“I’m no longer looking,” Matt said sounding bored.
“Well, hold that decision until you see them. I’m sending a picture.” Yun lang ang sinagot ni Niam and ended the call.
He immediately sent the photo to their group chat.
---
“Tita, I like you,’ Sabi ni Leon to Gabby.
“Thank you and I like you too,” sagot nya naman dito. Napakagwapong bata din nito. Alon-alon ang buhok with dark hair at mahahabang pilik. She suspected that the boy must have some Spanish or Mediterranean blood. While her Chico had fine brown hair and gray eyes. She always thought it was because of her. Maybe her unknown father was American.
“Are you Tito Matt’s wife?”
“What do you mean, Leon?”
“Chico looks like Tito Matt.” Leon was looking at her so intently.
She forced a smile para sa bata.
“It must have been a coincidence. Where - Where is Tito Matt, Leon?”
“He owns this hotel. He’ll just be here, somewhere.” sagot naman nito.
Napatango naman si Gabby. She needs to get out of here. Tiningnan nya ulit si Leon and she knew hindi nya kayang iwan ang bata na mag-isa.
She called Chico over at binulungan “Baby, we need to go home as soon as Tito Mark and Tito Niam arrive, okay. Help, Mommy. Help, Mommy convince Mango.”
“But are we going to get the bears, Mommy?” Balik-tanong nito.
“Yes, it will be delivered to the house.”
Tumango lang ito.
Nagpalinga-linga siya trying to spot the two men. She was relieved nang makita ang mga ito na palapit.
“Sorry, we just have an emergency at home. We have to leave,” she immediately told them paglapit ng mga ito. ‘Nice - Nice meeting you.” she said to Leon and patted his head.
Niam dropped the food na hawak nito on the table and went after them.
“Hey, Gab, Gabby --” Niam tried to block her path. “If it’s an emergency then let me help.”
“No, It’s okay,” she curtly replied.
Napapansin naman ni Niam that she was clearly distraught sa pangungulit na ginagawa nya so he let her go.
----
Two men and a boy sat at the table with food before them enough to feed ten people. Nakapangalumbaba si Niam at Mark.
Leon was nibbling on fries when Matt arrived, he was wearing his business suit so they knew he must have rushed to the grand hall.
“They left,” agad na balita ni Niam kay Matt.
Pasalampak naman na naupo si Matt on one of the empty chairs.
“Leon, why did Tita Gabby leave? Do you know?” tanong naman ni Mark sa pamangkin.
Umiling naman ito.
“She did not say anything? Did she receive any calls?” Tanong pa ulit ni Mark.
“We were just talking, Tito.”
“About?” si Niam.
“I asked if she’s Tito Matt’s wife because Chico looks like Tito Matt.”
Napa-ayos nang upo si Matt as soon as he heard his name.
“Then she asked where Tito Matt was, I told her that he is just around.”
Nagkatinginan ang tatlong magkaibigan.
“I’ll just call someone,” si Matt at akmang tatayo
“She can be married,” si Mark
“She’s not,” sagot ni Matt.“I’ve met her a week ago. I asked Nico to look into her.”
“Do you think they are yours?” si Niam
Tumango si Matt and was about to make a call. He put down the phone when Niam slid a piece of paper to him.
“Two Bears. That’s their address.”
Gabby was woken up by a text message tone on her phone. 6 AM.There were not that many people na tatawag o nagte-text sa kanya nang ganoon kaaga. She opened it.This is Matt Wilson. Call me once you read this.Agad na napaupo sya. Napasapo siya ng noo. She looked at the curt message on her phone again. She didn’t know how he got her number but a man like him looked like he had means. She just held on to her phone. Kailangan nya pang mag-isip.Inayos niya ang kumot ng mga anak and tip-toed to the bathroom and freshened up before she went to the kitchen. She put the phone on the counter and made coffee. She was making batter for pancakes
Halos lumuwa naman ang mata ni Gabby. No one ever talked to her that way. She tried to take her hand again.Matt interlaced their fingers instead.“You’re - You’re rude!” She gritted her teeth.“I am just being honest. We already have babies. What’s the problem?” Matt turned his head and smiled at her before he faced front again.“My babies. My kids!” madiin ang bawat kataga na pagtatama naman ni Gabby.“We’ll see, Gab. We’ll see.” Sagot ni Matt.He let Gabby have her hand when she pulled it again.
They were not on their way back to her condo. She hated sitting beside him. She was irritated na suot-suot niya pa rin ang coat nito. She was so stupid to wear a flimsy, lace bra underneath a satin blouse. She did not want to embarrass herself further so she decided to wear his coat until she splits up with him.“I have to go home.” dugtong niya sa sinabi.“It’s only 8 pm. You ate too fast. We still have time.”“Just tell me where we are going.”“Let’s get the bears for the twins.”“We don’t have to. If the hotel won’t send it over, I can pick it up tomorrow
“Mommy!” “We get a daddy. You hear that, Chico?” Chico shrugged Mango’s hand and held tighter to Gabby’s neck.Mango was not bothered and sat back on Matt’s lap. “So are you mommy’s Boyfie?”Pulang-pula naman na ang mukha ni Gabby.“Yep. I‘m her boyfriend.” Matt answered. He smiled while intentionally avoiding looking at Gabby and just focused on Mango.“You’re like Teacher Jason to Teacher Martha. He waits for her then they go home together,” daldal ni Mango. “Are you going to pick

A Little Tikes play house was in the middle of the room. But they always gave the toys to the orphanage once the twins outgrew them. They only kept a few. Ganoon din sa mga damit. She looked around. They split into teams and Mango and Gabby were together and Chico and Matt were a team. Gabby sat down inside the playhouse which was large enough for an adult … or
“Miss G, nandito po si Mr. Wilson,” kinikilig na sabi ni Miss Martha over the phone. “What?!?” “Sinusundo niya daw yung kambal.” “Miss Martha, I’ll be there in twenty minutes… No, no. Fifteen minutes,” agad na bawi ni Gabby sa sinabi. It was only Thursday. She expected Matt kinabukasan pa. He called the twins every night tulad ng pinangako nito. They were always talking for about an hour at hindi niya narinig na nagsabi itong Huwebes ang dating nito. At ang lalong masaklap, she has not made a decision yet. O, hindi pa nga ba talaga? She dragged her feet and said yes to everything for the past four days. Gabby heaved a big sigh and snatched her keys.
“Join us for dinner,” Matt told Lucas when they got to the office.“Lexie needs to go for a check-up. We’ll plan something out so your family can meet everyone. Naiwan din ang kambal. Alam mo naman ang mga iyon.”Lucas called Leon. Atubili pa itong sumama but Lucas told him they were meeting again. They watched Leon and Chico exchange an elaborate handshake before they bade goodbye to each other.Nagkatinginan lang si Matt at Lucas and shrugged their shoulders.Nagpaalam si Lucas sa mga bata and gave Gabby a quick hug before he left.Hindi naman makapaniwala si Gabby but there were at least 6 booster seats at Matt’s office. There was even a sales representative
Yun ang tawag sa mga drives to the safari looking for animals in their natural environment. The reason why people flock to the Africa. There are game drives in the morning, at mayroon din sa hapon. The best times are during the dawn hours and at dusk when the animals are busiest. The weather is cool, the game are either hunting or drinking. And the likelihood of spotting them are high. The drive normally takes about 3 hours but they were already back after just two. “You are back early, madam,” bati sa kanya ng butler na naka toka sa safari villa nila. He was very lean and very tall, characteristic of the Maasai tribe of Kenya. His skin was very dark against the crisp white of the short sleeved polo he was wearing. Gabby has seen Chege in his Maasai traditional clothes before, a red cloth over his shoulder and across his chest and wore numerous beaded necklaces and bracelets and he looked fierce in it, but he always had a smile and h
Sinalat ni Matt ang noo ni Gabby. She woke up from the movement. “Hey, morning,” a smiling Matt greeted her, his voice low. He moved his hand and felt her neck with the back of his hand. “You are all good, no fever,” he added before dropping a kiss on her lips. Gabby’s cheeks flushed with the recollection of how she came down with a fever after their first time together. She was still wearing Matt’s shirt. She already had pajamas on. She realized, binihisan siya nito and carried her to bed last night. She glanced at the twins na tulog na tulog pa din. “Sorry that woke you up. You can get back to sleep. We still have a couple of hours.” ani Matt, not leaving and still sitting on her side of the bed.Pero bumangon na rin si Gabby, she stopped herself from winching, her legs were aching, and every part of her body. “I need to pack,” sambit niya but she remained seated on the bed. Pinapakiramdaman if strength is back to her legs. “Done.” Kiniling ni Matt ang ulo pointing to the lugga
The sea was bluer than usual and the sky was clearer. The trees that lined the street below even looked greener. “Mommy, let’s go,” malakas na tawag ni Mango from the living room. “Yes, baby. Five minutes,” sagot niya dito. She just half dried her hair at nilagyan ng kaunting leave-on hair conditioner. Her hair was not cooperating and was giving her riot curls. She checked herself in the mirror. Matt said lalabas lang sila para mamili ng ilang gamit for their safari vacation. She wore a black track pants, a white shirt and threw on a black, zipped Philipp Plein track top. The twins picked it for her. It had cartoon monsters printed on it.
“DO YOU BELIEVE HIM?” Tanong ni Nico kay Matt. Kaaalis lang ni Lio and they were left in the cigar room. Matt was still frowning, still thinking of everything he had heard. “There is something off.“ Pauna niya. He slowly poured another shot of whisky into his glass. “Like it was a partial truth?” ani ni Nico. He also had an unlighted cigar in his hand. He brought it closer to his nose to smell the premium tobacco but his eyes never left Matt. “Yes.” Nico took an envelope from inside his jacket and slid it to Matt. “Personally picked up and delivered.” “Thanks, bro.” Matt grabbed the mid-size brown envelope. He looked at the address first. It was very indistinct but it carried the name of the laboratory from the US. He opened it and quickly ran his eyes on the few pieces of paper inside. He neatly folded it and placed it back on the envelope, tsaka isinuksok sa inner pocket ng sariling jacket. “So?” Nico widely smiled. He has been with Matt since they were starting out
Lio flipped a coin between his fingers. His eyes tracked Matt until Matt occupied a solo seat in the living room. He continued to look around, he stopped flipping the coin when his eyes met Nico’s sharp gaze. “So, G is not invited to the conversation?” Lio asked and sat back comfortably. He was wearing a tan button-down shirt, sunglasses in his shirt pocket, and dark brown pants. “You might want to start talking before you overstay your welcome,” Nico interjected. He comfortably leaned on the counter of the small kitchen of the suite. “I want to talk to G first.” was Lio’s response. Sandaling nagtinginan muna si Nico at Matt before Matt turned to look away and stared at the view outside with his jaw clenched. Nico moved and walked to the bedroom, paglabas nito ay nakasunod na si Gabby. Saglit namang sinulyapan ni Gabby si Matt but he was looking away from her. A sharp pain pierced her heart. Sa maikling panahong nakilala niya ito, he always had his eyes on her, as if he k
Matt was a benefactor of the center. There was no time to be alone which was a relief for her. Matt had a formal meeting with the sisters. He asked her to come with him pero nagdahilan siyang aayusin ang mga inihandang pasalubong para kay Sister Mary. May nagpresentang tulungan siya. Bumalik sila sa sasakyan at naroon din ang isang pang sasakyan that escorted them. She may never get used to it pero napansin niyang Matt rarely travelled alone. “We need the boxes,” she politely asked one of the armed men na kasama nila. He just called someone somewhere
“MOMMY, IS LOLA EXPECTING US?” tanong ni Mango. “Yes, anak.” Gabby was fixing Mango’s hair. Maingat na tinitirintas ang buhok nito. She placed ribbons as she braided her hair. The corner of Mango’s lips slightly up in a contained smile habang pinapanood nito ang ginagawa niya sa salamin. “Are we staying with lola?” Tanong ulit ni Mango. “No, baby, we will just visit.” Sandaling sinulyapan niya rin ito sa salamin. “Mommy, are we going to see Simba?” patuloy ang makulit na pagtatanong ni Mango, she even started kicking her feet in the air, palatandaang excited ito. Mango watched Lion King over and over on the tablet since they arrived in the hotel the day before. “We will ask Daddy, okay? He may need to be back for work.” “But daddy said we can.” Hard-headed. Matt’s voice echoed in Gabby’s head. She needs to tell Matt to be firmer with Mango. “I’m going to ask Daddy, Mommy.” Mango looked so pitiful with her expression. But Gabby was aware na inuuto lang siya ng anak. She was a
“LET ME CARRY YOU, BABY,” Matt gently coaxed Mango na buhat-buhat na ni Gabby. “No!” Pilit itong ginising ni Gabby to prepare for their flight and the girl was now in a bad mood. “You’re so big now for mommy to carry you, Mango.” Chico said at tiningnan nang masama ang kapatid. Mango stuck her tongue out to Chico at mahigpit na yumakap sa ina. “Brat.” Chico murmured. “Don’t cry. It will mean that you are intentionally being difficult right now. Mommy understands you are still sleepy and I can still carry you.” Marahang niyang hinaplos ang buhok nito. Nakatulog nga ulit si Mango before they were even picked up from the hotel. “Let me.” Maingat na inilipat niya si Mango to Matt’s arms. Inayos niya din ang nagusot na blouse ng anak and covered her back with the light wool coat na ayaw nitong isuot. The weather in Dubai at night was a
HE CARRIED HER OFF THE BED at inilang hakbang lang nito ang daybed na nasa isang sulok ng kwarto. He laid her on it before he reached out for throw blanket on one of the chairs. Mabilis itong nahiga sa tabi niya, fixed the one pillow on it that Chico left on the daybed earlier and he threw the blanket over them. She scooted to the end of the narrow daybed, trying to put some space between them at patagilid na nahiga. “You’re going to fall over,” bulong nito. Nilingkis nito ang kamay sa bewang niya and pulled her closer. Her back feels good against his chest. He was hard but warm. “Why did you run away?” binasag nito ang katahimikan. “Don't just tell me you are sorry,” pahabol na sambit nito. She took her time thinking of what to tell him. Inabot naman ni Matt ang isang kamay ni Gabby, he traced her fingers first
