Chapter 1: In Trouble

It took me extra long to clean the tables after the dinner rush was over at the diner. Some teens thought it'd be funny to stick their gum underneath their table; I had been scraping it for at least fifteen minutes. How much gum had they been chewing?

The diner was one of those retro restaurants that tried to imitate the fifties and had a jukebox playing 24/7. All of us waitresses had to wear fifties style dresses and roller-skates while serving. By the end of a shift, I was pretty exhausted.

Callie was the only one remaining on the shift with me, though she wasn't much help. She had one reason for staying late and it wasn't to help me out. The secret smiles and winks shared between her and our manager made me want to vomit, but I just put my head down and finished cleaning my section.

It had been a couple years since I had been hired for this job. I knew it wasn't something that would help my nonexistent savings account, but at least I could make ends meet.

I knew that I shouldn't be complaining; at twenty-three, I was lucky to be able to pay the rent for my shabby apartment. The few true friends I had did not complain about my life, but I knew they probably pitied me in secret. Maybe someday my luck would change.

I used to dream about having a huge house and a really nice sports car. I was young and naïve back then, though I occasionally found myself thinking about that old desire when things were really bad.

I continued walking towards my car which was five years old and starting to have engine problems. It was a pitiful sight as it had a long scratch on it from the prior owner before me. I was reminded of my living situation

each time I looked at it.

Before I backed up and drove off, my phone started ringing.

I checked the caller ID and answered immediately when I saw it was my younger sister, Lola. Normally, she didn't call unless it was something urgent.

I got a bad feeling in my stomach, but I tried to calmly answer, "Hi Lola. What's going on?"

"Danica, I…I've got something to tell you. I didn't know who else to call."

Major sirens began ringing in my head.

My voice filled with concern as I asked, "Are you okay?"

Her voice got shaky as she said, "No. I'm not. I'm in a huge mess." She hesitated before continuing, "I owe $200,000 to a mobster."

"Oh my God. Lola, how did this happen?"

There was a slight pause on her end of the line. I heard her breathing get shallow which worried me greatly.

This was bad. There was no way that Lola had this kind of money. And from what I knew about local gangsters, they weren't too forgiving when a debt isn't paid. I couldn't believe this was happening.

I knew immediately that I would help her. She was the only family member I had left and I couldn't let her down. Our parents always wanted me to look after my sister, and I would honor their wish.

Lola finally answered, "I swear I wasn't being irresponsible. I made some huge mistakes and got caught up in this mess."

"I'm going to get you out of this."

Lola swallowed and said, "I don't want to burden you, but I didn't know what else to do. I'm so sorry."

"No, it's okay. You aren't burdening me. We're family. Any problem you have is also mine. We're in this together."

She hung up before I could say anything else. I drove off with worry overtaking me. My sister was in deep trouble. She should've known better than to get involved with a mobster.

I had to do something to get her out of the danger she was in. Where would I find the amount of money she needed? I couldn't earn it with the salary from my crappy job as a waitress. I've never gotten very high tips either because of cheapskate customers.

Why did this have to happen to Lola? It wasn't something I ever thought she would get involved in. Now that this was a reality, it made me nervous. How long would the mobster wait for payment?

After getting back to my apartment, I took my hair out of its ponytail and prepared my meager dinner. I looked around at my worn furniture and peeling walls and wondered if I'd ever get a nicer place.

The apartment was supposed to be temporary; I was only going to live there until I got the money for something more permanent. My dream was to have an actual house and a yard.

Maybe someday I'd have that house. Though that dream would now be pushed farther into the future, since I had to focus all my energy and resources to helping Lola.

Seconds later, I started to eat. The beef was sub-par while the potatoes were average tasting. I should've expected that from a microwave meal that was on sale.

After eating for a little bit, I pulled out the newspaper to look at the job ads. I thought that it wouldn't hurt to try to look for a good paying job. My sister couldn't wait long to get the money, so it was better to search sooner than later.

I wanted to find anything that would help me earn cash fast. There were some sketchy looking ads for jobs that I'd never do. I was desperate for money but not that desperate.

One ad stood out to me but sounded too good to be true. The money would be enough to save my sister's life and help me start over, but who would pay that much for a surrogate?

I would never have considered surrogacy in the past but times were different. It was fate that this position was available. I had to at least try to get chosen.

I checked the listing for the position to see when the interviews were being held. Bold letters jumped out to me and stated "Interview days: Monday thru Friday 6 pm until 9pm."

What time was it? I glanced down at my laptop, and saw that it was only 6:30. I still had plenty of time to head over there.

I thought about what to wear to such an important interview. Unfortunately, I didn't have many professional outfits to use.

I quickly changed my clothes into a very nice blouse and black pencil skirt with the only pair of heels I owned. Then I put my blonde hair into a bun before rushing out of the apartment and down the steps.

Luckily, the place for the interview was fifteen minutes away. It was perfect. Maybe the job was meant for me.

I had passed this building on my way to the diner several times. It was the headquarters for Ryan Inc. Before that day, I had never had a reason to go in there.

The company specialized in technology and sold some of the best products out there. They were an expensive brand, so I never had the opportunity to buy any of their items.

I knew my sister had liked what they sold, but I'd never been able to buy her anything. One day I wanted to get her everything she wanted, but that would be a long time from now.

I made my way to my car and drove off, while going a few miles over the speed limit. I really hoped I could get the position. It was a matter of life and death for Lola, so I couldn't waste any precious time.

I arrived at the headquarters of Ryan Inc. without any major traffic on the way. It was my lucky day. Slowly, I walked into the tall and looming building. It was almost the height of a skyscraper but fell a little short. I went up to the fifth floor where the ad said to go for the interview. There was a short line in front of the receptionist's desk. I saw one other woman in front of me. She looked around my age and was pretty with a tall and slender build. The woman was being overly perky."I can't wait to get interviewed for this position! I can't believe that I found the ad."The receptionist looked bothered by this woman's enthusiasm and motioned for her to sit down.Shortly after, the perky woman got out of her chair and left the room. I was relieved that she wasn't going to stay around me any longer.I took the opportunity to walk up to the receptionist. I said, "I'm here for an interview for the position of a surrogate. Where exactly do I go?""You can sit over there an

I drove to the hotel which housed the restaurant I had agreed to meet Dax at. My stomach felt a little nauseous.I reluctantly handed the valet my keys and twenty bucks. Unfortunately, this emptied my wallet. The hotel looked elegant and luxurious and stood several stories high. It had gold on the name of the hotel sign and entrance. Even the bellhops wore expensive looking uniforms in the shade of a royal purple. When I walked in, people stared at me without trying to hide it. I felt majorly underdressed with my black slacks, flats, and bright blue blouse. Why did these people have to judge me? I was already out of place without their staring. I had to go up to the sixth floor to get to the restaurant. I noticed elegant light fixtures throughout the restaurant, and the servers had black and white formal wear on.Their tables had expensive looking glasses, tablecloths, and napkins set on them. I could even see the view of the city skyline from the windows. The sun was just star

The following day after work, I went back home and changed into casual clothes before going to my sister's apartment. I touched the mace that I always keep in my purse, reassured by its presence. I knocked on the door, and she answered it after a couple minutes. A look of relief shone on Lola's face as she let me inside. Immediately, Lola closed the door and latched it shut tightly.I noticed that she seemed kind of on edge, and her hair wasn't even brushed well. No makeup was on her face, which was unusual too. Her blonde hair didn't look as shiny as it normally did either.Lola's apartment seemed to have gone downhill from the last time I saw it. Her place was normally clean and organized. I saw a pile of clothes on her living room floor, and dishes were piled in her sink. Then there were old food wrappers scattered all over. She must've been stressed out from what she was going through. I wondered how long she actually kept her troubles from me. I felt so bad that she had to be

I slowly kept trying to back up and was heading closer and closer to the door. Maybe I could leave without him trying to chase after me or something. Every step back was closer to my freedom.Part of me wondered if I could even escape. There was too much of a risk reporting an event like this, so I wouldn't even have the courage to tell anyone about this. Besides, he could just pay a large amount of money to keep me quiet. My heart was racing so fast, and my palms started getting sweaty. Dax suddenly realized I was trying to leave and spoke up. "Wait. It's not what you think. Let me explain Danica."Shit. I wasn't leaving as discreetly as I thought I was doing. Maybe I had gone about this the wrong way. I should've tried to render him unconscious instead. It was my fault for panicking too much. "Why should I let you explain?" I coldly asked after seconds ticked by on his clock. His face fell in horror as he put together what I was envisioning. I almost felt bad at seeing his e

As I was about to leave, Dax actually walked out with me. He didn't say anything on the walk, but it was unexpected. Maybe deep down he had a kindness to himself that he kept hidden.Dax walked with me until we were just outside the building. He said, "This is where we part ways. I'll probably see you again at some point during this.""Okay. I'll see you around. Have a good night."I wasn't sure why I added the last part. I couldn't be mean to Dax though. Maybe if I was kind that would help make him kinder. Or it could be wishful thinking.Dax left without another word and headed back to the building. A sudden thought came to me. I wondered if there was something in Dax that was more than just work. He couldn't just be a workaholic; he had to care about something else. Maybe in time, I'd see other parts of Dax. I was kind of intrigued by him.I wasn't sure why I was intrigued by him, however. I pushed it to the side when I reached my car. I couldn't continue to think about such

The following day, I heard a knock on my door. I checked the clock, and saw it was only a little after six. I quickly put on my robe and peeked to see who was visiting me so early. A man in a very expensive looking suit and tie stood on the opposite side of my door. Dax had notified me that someone would come over to give a retainer of $10,000 per month. This was for the duration of the pregnancy. I answered the door and the man said, "Here is the money that was promised to you. This is to help cover any expenses."He held out the envelope to me, and I took it. "Thank you for delivering this to me.""You're welcome. Mr. Ryan would've done this himself, but he had an early business meeting today.""It's no problem. I understand how busy he is."The worker went off without another word, and I shut the door before re-locking it again. Then I got ready for my day. After putting on my uniform for my job, I went to make breakfast. I decided to make a simple breakfast of scrambled eg

My shift was almost over when I saw Dax walk into the restaurant. He looked out of place in his suit. Sometimes I disliked how he looked like a model for a fashion magazine. Why did he have to be rich and gorgeous?I pushed away those thoughts and blinked a couple times. It didn't seem real that he was at my workplace. What was he doing here anyway? I didn't think he had a reason to see me until later. I was going to move in after my shift was done.My one co-worker looked at Dax and mouthed "He's hot." I hoped he hadn't seen her do that. I doubted Dax would be interested in her, however. When he got close to me, I asked, "Why are you here?""I'm going to drive you to my place.""Can't I just follow you with my car?"He shook his head no and said, "I'd rather drive you there myself. I'll get one of my workers to bring your car over.""Well, I was finishing up actually. Can you wait just a couple more minutes?"He nodded while I finished cleaning the milkshake machine. One ne

Dax POVI had made it just in time. My brother was doing what he did best. He used to be worse in his teen years. It was a shame to see my brother behaving that way. It certainly affected how people saw me by being related. Maybe someday he would stop his playboy ways. But this time he had been shameless with Danica. How could he just hold her like this? Jared needed to be put into his place. Jared holding Danica close to him released an anger I had never felt before. I didn't want him touching her so intimately, as if she was his.She wasn't my woman either, but I knew Jared didn't have the right to do that. He especially shouldn't have been doing that in my mansion. I stared Jared down, but he didn't seem that bothered by me. He kept a relaxed position and still had his hands on Danica. The more he kept touching her made me even more infuriated. Was he trying to make me punch him?I stepped closer to him and said, "Leave her alone Jared. Take your hands off her or I'll r

Dax POVIt was so hard to believe that my own sister-in-law would stoop so low for Jared. In the past, I had never cared for Wendy that much. There was something about her that felt off at times. At least she would never be able to return to my home. I would have to ban Jared from coming back. There was no way that I could trust him ever again either. He may have been behind Wendy's actions. It was if I couldn't trust anyone these days. I definitely couldn't let my guard down quite yet. Things had been quite dangerous. I'd make sure to keep Danica safe for the remainder of her time with me. Almost losing her made me value her even more than I used to.A little after Wendy left, I wanted to offer Danica some comfort after that close call. I had seen that she had gone up to her room and headed there myself.I knocked on her door and she let me in. Danica was lying on her bed, and I looked at her."Would you like some company? I was shocked that he had given up being at the office for me.He was really showing off how much he cared for me. I knew he was still feeling terrible that I had been kidnapped. I didn't want anyone to feel guilt for that. I would try to reassure him as the days went by.The first day back, I had been more nervous than usual. Dax helped a lot that day to calm me down. Danica POVDuring the car ride, Dax held my hand and glanced over at me often. He seemed very concerned about my well-being which made feel appreciated. We didn't converse while we drove along. I wasn't quite ready to talk again, or my voice would betray me. I still wasn't over the stress of being imprisoned by criminals. It had felt so unreal, almost as if it hadn't happened to me.Dax must've understood that I didn't want to talk and didn't try to press me to say anything. We had comfortable silence in the car. I wanted to thank him for getting me out of that situation, but no words could describe how grateful I was.He had gone beyond what I expected of him. I glanced at him and noticed that he looked at ease now that I was back with him. I had no idea how Dax was so affected by hearing about what happened to me. I didn't like how I had caused him more stress by getting involved in that mess. It made me feel guilty that I hadn't tried to tell him about it before. But back the

I narrowed my eyes at him and showed him that I wasn't afraid. Was this really the end? My mission was going to be in vain. I had been so close to saving Danica. It would be all for nothing if I died. But I was out of luck, since no one else was around to help me out.Suddenly, there was a shot fired from the doorway. When I looked over, one of my security team members was there. He must've have been quietly following me the whole time. The gangster gripped his leg and went to the ground. He deserved getting shot. My heart wouldn't stop beating. That man had almost killed me. Dax POVI tried to figure out the location of the gangster's hideout for a few hours before I made a breakthrough. There had been rumors about suspicious activity happening at this abandoned facility. A few people had said they had seen some shady looking people around that area within the past few months. All of the accounts from eyewitnesses seemed believable. I had to go with my gut feeling that this was their location.Besides, it was in a location that not many people knew about. Where else would they hiding out in? They couldn't be found by the police. I met up with the security team shortly after discovering this information and shared it with them. I also told them information they should know, "Everyone must keep on high alert when we arrive at the location. These are dangerous individuals we'll be facing."We got into separate vehicles and headed out towards the facility. As I drove along, I was getting more anxious about Danica's wellbeing. What if they had been negl

Dax POVAfter I set the ransom note down, I felt an immense rage come over me. This whole situation was terrible and shouldn't have come to this. Danica was in danger because of this gigantic mistake on their end. I wished this had all been a nightmare. The woman that I deeply cared about was gone. She must've been absolutely terrified. It was too hard to imagine her in such a situation. The thought of her captors made me feel sick. They could do unspeakable things to her. I needed to stop myself from thinking of anyone harming her. It would make me even more enraged. There was nothing I could do yet. I wasn't sure of the location of where she was being kept. Those people would pay once I figured out where they were hiding. They wouldn't know what was coming their way. I had to take them by surprise or else this would all fail.I knew I had to get to her and rescue her before it was too late. I hoped that what had happened earlier had been a nightmare. I slowly opened my eyes; when I saw that I wasn't in my bed at the mansion, I knew that it had to be real. I felt rope tied around my wrists and ankles and could feel the coolness of the metal from the chair. There was even a piece of cloth covering my mouth. I felt the urge to scream but knew it was pointless. Nobody would be able to hear my cries for help. This was the worst possible situation I could've been in. I never imagined that this scenario would happen to me. How had I gotten caught up in this? Maybe I shouldn't have been so careless earlier. I wished I wouldn't have been walking in that shady area. I knew better than that, but it was too late to blame myself for what had already gone down.I tried to get a sense of where I was by looking around the room. I didn't want to lose all of my hope for getting out of here. It was too dark to see anything to give away where those men had taken me. The one lightbul

Danica POVI continued to walk towards the car and looked behind me. The security detail was still following me and kept glancing around often. He was checking for any signs of trouble, which made me feel relieved. I felt very safe having someone look after me.Not that it looked too dangerous. We were the only two people around the area. I didn't see anyone suspicious around as I made a brief scan of the area.Nothing bad could happen as long as I had this person around. I completely trusted that he wouldn't let anything happen to me. Dax wouldn't let any of his people fail me, especially after Jason had broken into the mansion.I knew Dax still felt guilty about that happening. Neither one of us had brought it up since Jason had been taken away. I hoped nothing else like that would happen again. It was unfortunate that the car was so far away this time. The chauffeur couldn't find an easier parking spot. As I came to an alley, there was a very scruffy looking young man. His ha
