Chapter 5: Long Time Ago

I slowly kept trying to back up and was heading closer and closer to the door. Maybe I could leave without him trying to chase after me or something. Every step back was closer to my freedom.

Part of me wondered if I could even escape. There was too much of a risk reporting an event like this, so I wouldn't even have the courage to tell anyone about this. Besides, he could just pay a large amount of money to keep me quiet.

My heart was racing so fast, and my palms started getting sweaty.

Dax suddenly realized I was trying to leave and spoke up. "Wait. It's not what you think. Let me explain Danica."

Shit. I wasn't leaving as discreetly as I thought I was doing.

Maybe I had gone about this the wrong way. I should've tried to render him unconscious instead. It was my fault for panicking too much.

"Why should I let you explain?" I coldly asked after seconds ticked by on his clock.

His face fell in horror as he put together what I was envisioning. I almost felt bad at seeing his expression. But it was hard to know what he was truly like.

Living in a bad neighborhood had made me wary of certain people. I couldn't take any chances being alone with Dax much longer. All I had was mace, which wouldn't help me if some of his workers came to his aid.

I finally understood why my friend had taken self-defense classes. It was dumb of me not to have gone with her when she asked me months ago. I hated feeling so vulnerable.

Dax snapped me back to the present and said, "Please let me explain. I'm really not the kind of person you're making me out to be."

I didn't want to admit that I was curious to see what he had to say. I'd at least give him a chance to explain himself. Maybe he should've been more careful about saying he'd known me for years. It was the creepiest thing I'd ever heard.

Dax stood there in thought for a few seconds, as if he was thinking of what to say.

I waited impatiently until he looked ready to explain himself.

"A few years ago, I was eating at a high-end restaurant where you worked. I remember there were many wealthy customers who were so rude towards you. I heard a few of them even catcall you when you walked away."

Flashes of that restaurant came back to me. It was a place that I worked at for a few years because it was a semi decent pay. The only issue was all of the rich assholes who harassed me there on a daily basis.

The harassment got so bad that I called in sick a few times after it started. I didn't like people being jerks to me for no reason. They had no idea what I was going through in life already. I had almost quit on more than one

occasion there.

A few seconds passed before I said, "I had no idea you were even there. I can't believe you noticed someone like me of all people." I added, "I feel ashamed you had to see that."

His face softened a little, and a flash of a different side of him came out. He did have emotion after all. It surprised me to see him affected by my words.

Dax continued and said, "Don't feel ashamed. It wasn't your fault that those people were real jerks. They shouldn't have treated you that way."

I almost had tears start to form but wouldn't let them come out. I hadn't heard many people be so kind to me before, especially people that were of his social class.

I felt a warmth at his words and said, "Thank you for saying that. It means a lot to me."

He added, "As I was ready to exit the restaurant, I noticed you were about to leave too. You did something that really made me notice you. I saw you give all your tips to a homeless man, even though you looked like you needed the money yourself. I've thought of your kind act often over the years."

What were the odds that he had found me again after all those years? I hadn't recognized him, since he had been one face in a sea of wealthy and privileged people.

Seconds passed before I asked Dax, "Really? Why?"

"I admired you. Your kindness touched something inside me."

It was a great feeling to know that I had affected someone else. No one had ever been affected by something that I had done or said. Normally, I was forgotten or overlooked by other people.

I wanted to enjoy the moment, because I wasn't sure if anyone would tell me words like that again.

Finally, I said, "I was just being kind because I wanted to help that man out. He looked like he needed the money more than me."

Dax looked at me in pure admiration. My heart began to flutter in response.

I was shocked that he would remember something from that long ago. Honestly, it was something I hadn't thought of for a long time. Now I knew why he had wanted me for the position. I was surprised it wasn't for my looks, as that seemed more likely from a man.

Suddenly Dax spoke up again and said, "Do you want to know the true reason I need a child so badly?"

"Yes. I've been wondering this for a while. But you always got so upset when I brought it up."

For a brief moment, I thought he wasn't going to tell me. Dax became very quiet and had a faraway look. His hands went into his pockets as I waited to hear his reply.

Dax sighed and admitted, "I need a child because I could lose control of my company if I don't have one by a certain time. I'd rather that not happen, as I have put a lot of time and hard work into this company."

I asked, "When do you need the child by?"

I hoped he would answer my question and not get angered by it. He was finally answering questions that I wanted to know. I had to try to get all the answers while I had the opportunity.

He looked away from me and said, "Before my thirtieth birthday. I never thought a birthday would be my potential downfall."

It all made sense why he had put out the ad so urgently. Waiting too long was a risk to him. He needed someone fast. I knew he was running out of time, despite being a fairly young CEO.

"So, that's why you're hiring a surrogate now. I'm sorry that your position is in danger. That must be really hard to go through," I told him.

Dax almost gave a smile and said, "I appreciate you for saying that."

I didn't want to admit it but his almost smile was charming. I hoped I'd be able to see it again. It made Dax seem less intimidating and a little more likeable.

I was surprised that he had a chance at losing his job. This changed how I thought of him. I guess no one was ever safe in their career, even at the top level.

At that moment, I realized that I would stay as his surrogate and help him save his job. I wasn't sure why but I felt the urge to stay by Dax's side and keep our agreement going.

As I was about to leave, Dax actually walked out with me. He didn't say anything on the walk, but it was unexpected. Maybe deep down he had a kindness to himself that he kept hidden.Dax walked with me until we were just outside the building. He said, "This is where we part ways. I'll probably see you again at some point during this.""Okay. I'll see you around. Have a good night."I wasn't sure why I added the last part. I couldn't be mean to Dax though. Maybe if I was kind that would help make him kinder. Or it could be wishful thinking.Dax left without another word and headed back to the building. A sudden thought came to me. I wondered if there was something in Dax that was more than just work. He couldn't just be a workaholic; he had to care about something else. Maybe in time, I'd see other parts of Dax. I was kind of intrigued by him.I wasn't sure why I was intrigued by him, however. I pushed it to the side when I reached my car. I couldn't continue to think about such

The following day, I heard a knock on my door. I checked the clock, and saw it was only a little after six. I quickly put on my robe and peeked to see who was visiting me so early. A man in a very expensive looking suit and tie stood on the opposite side of my door. Dax had notified me that someone would come over to give a retainer of $10,000 per month. This was for the duration of the pregnancy. I answered the door and the man said, "Here is the money that was promised to you. This is to help cover any expenses."He held out the envelope to me, and I took it. "Thank you for delivering this to me.""You're welcome. Mr. Ryan would've done this himself, but he had an early business meeting today.""It's no problem. I understand how busy he is."The worker went off without another word, and I shut the door before re-locking it again. Then I got ready for my day. After putting on my uniform for my job, I went to make breakfast. I decided to make a simple breakfast of scrambled eg

My shift was almost over when I saw Dax walk into the restaurant. He looked out of place in his suit. Sometimes I disliked how he looked like a model for a fashion magazine. Why did he have to be rich and gorgeous?I pushed away those thoughts and blinked a couple times. It didn't seem real that he was at my workplace. What was he doing here anyway? I didn't think he had a reason to see me until later. I was going to move in after my shift was done.My one co-worker looked at Dax and mouthed "He's hot." I hoped he hadn't seen her do that. I doubted Dax would be interested in her, however. When he got close to me, I asked, "Why are you here?""I'm going to drive you to my place.""Can't I just follow you with my car?"He shook his head no and said, "I'd rather drive you there myself. I'll get one of my workers to bring your car over.""Well, I was finishing up actually. Can you wait just a couple more minutes?"He nodded while I finished cleaning the milkshake machine. One ne

Dax POVI had made it just in time. My brother was doing what he did best. He used to be worse in his teen years. It was a shame to see my brother behaving that way. It certainly affected how people saw me by being related. Maybe someday he would stop his playboy ways. But this time he had been shameless with Danica. How could he just hold her like this? Jared needed to be put into his place. Jared holding Danica close to him released an anger I had never felt before. I didn't want him touching her so intimately, as if she was his.She wasn't my woman either, but I knew Jared didn't have the right to do that. He especially shouldn't have been doing that in my mansion. I stared Jared down, but he didn't seem that bothered by me. He kept a relaxed position and still had his hands on Danica. The more he kept touching her made me even more infuriated. Was he trying to make me punch him?I stepped closer to him and said, "Leave her alone Jared. Take your hands off her or I'll r

  • Carrying the Billionaire's Baby   Chapter 10: Luxury

Over the next couple of days I was finally starting to get adjusted to living in a mansion. It was a huge change from what I had known for so long. I knew I could get used to this new life far too easily. While living in the mansion, I hadn't needed to clean or cook or even make my bed. There was a maid and other servants that Dax had. I liked having a break from having to do everything for myself. Even my laundry was done every two days. I couldn't believe how well I was being treated as just a guest. I think it was beyond my expectations. This was some of the best hospitality I had ever experienced. No hotel compared to how I was living here.I understood why rich people had the kind of life that I had dreamed of in the past. It was nice that I had several months to experience this kind of lifestyle. The only problem was when it ended, and I'd go back to that crappy apartment. On the bright side, I hadn't been seeing Dax very much. He may have lived there but was always busy do

It felt as if my whole day was wasted being stuck in that gigantic place. I wanted to be earning my money to pay for my apartment. It wasn't as if I had moved out of there, so I still was paying to live there.Dax had gone to work hours ago and wasn't back yet. When he got back, I wanted to yell at him some more. He had no idea how much he screwed up my day. I didn't feel as productive as usual, since I had nowhere to be.After a few minutes passed, I decided to call Lola. I wanted to see if her day had gone better than mine had.Maybe she would help calm me down by talking to me. Normally talking to her was almost therapeutic. She knew I only called when I needed to vent or cool off from being angry."Hey Lola."Lola spoke in a worried tone, "Is there something wrong?""Yeah. Someone really got on my nerves today.""Was it Dax?"I laughed bitterly and answered, "Yeah it was. He made me stay in the mansion all day." I added, "I don't have my job anymore either. My breakfast made a great start to my day. There were expresso waffles with a mocha drizzle and freshly baked croissants that were buttery and airy that melted in my mouth. I knew that after that breakfast I'd never go back to plain cereal again. After savoring the last bite, I took my plate and silverware over to one of the kitchen staff members. The staff took care of cleaning the dining ware right away and also cleaned the table where I had accidentally left some crumbs. Then I made my way to my room and got ready for the day. I had something in mind compared to yesterday. No way was I going to be in the mansion two days in a row. Besides, Dax had said it was okay to go out with a chauffeur.I made my way towards the bathroom and changed into a beautiful designer dress I found in the closet. The dress was strapless with a ruffled-silk cocktail style that was a few inches above my knees. It was far more revealing than I normally wore, but it was too pretty to not wear. After put

I blinked a couple of times to see if I was having a horrible nightmare. No way was I really seeing my ex-boyfriend.Jason was still as handsome as ever with his sharp jawline and full lips. His hairstyle was the only thing majorly different about him. When we were dating, he had dyed his hair blond and it was a little past his ears. Now it was cut into a classic combed back style that really fit his face shape. He was even wearing a nice suit and tie, which was new. The Jason I knew always hated wearing suits and swore he'd never wear one. What were the odds that he'd come into the same store as me? We hadn't seen each other after our breakup. Though, I had kept his number in hopes of him wanting me back. I was foolish to have thought that way.My heart betrayed me by beating rapidly as Jason came closer into view. I hated that his mere presence had such an effect on me. We had dated for a couple of years. Jason had broken up with me after telling me that things were too seriou

Danica POVDuring the car ride, Dax held my hand and glanced over at me often. He seemed very concerned about my well-being which made feel appreciated. We didn't converse while we drove along. I wasn't quite ready to talk again, or my voice would betray me. I still wasn't over the stress of being imprisoned by criminals. It had felt so unreal, almost as if it hadn't happened to me.Dax must've understood that I didn't want to talk and didn't try to press me to say anything. We had comfortable silence in the car. I wanted to thank him for getting me out of that situation, but no words could describe how grateful I was.He had gone beyond what I expected of him. I glanced at him and noticed that he looked at ease now that I was back with him. I had no idea how Dax was so affected by hearing about what happened to me. Dax POVI tried to figure out the location of the gangster's hideout for a few hours before I made a breakthrough. There had been rumors about suspicious activity happening at this abandoned facility. A few people had said they had seen some shady looking people around that area within the past few months. All of the accounts from eyewitnesses seemed believable. I had to go with my gut feeling that this was their location.Besides, it was in a location that not many people knew about. Where else would they hiding out in? They couldn't be found by the police. I met up with the security team shortly after discovering this information and shared it with them. I also told them information they should know, "Everyone must keep on high alert when we arrive at the location. These are dangerous individuals we'll be facing."We got into separate vehicles and headed out towards the facility. As I drove along, I was getting more anxious about Danica's wellbeing. What if they had been negl

It would make me even more enraged. There was nothing I could do yet. I wasn't sure of the location of where she was being kept. Those people would pay once I figured out where they were hiding. They wouldn't know what was coming their way. I had to take them by surprise or else this would all fail.I knew I had to get to her and rescue her before it was too late. I hoped that what had happened earlier had been a nightmare. I slowly opened my eyes; when I saw that I wasn't in my bed at the mansion, I knew that it had to be real. I felt rope tied around my wrists and ankles and could feel the coolness of the metal from the chair. There was even a piece of cloth covering my mouth. I felt the urge to scream but knew it was pointless. Nobody would be able to hear my cries for help. This was the worst possible situation I could've been in. I never imagined that this scenario would happen to me. How had I gotten caught up in this? Maybe I shouldn't have been so careless earlier. I wished I wouldn't have been walking in that shady area. I knew better than that, but it was too late to blame myself for what had already gone down.I tried to get a sense of where I was by looking around the room. I didn't want to lose all of my hope for getting out of here. It was too dark to see anything to give away where those men had taken me. The one lightbul

Danica POVI continued to walk towards the car and looked behind me. The security detail was still following me and kept glancing around often. He was checking for any signs of trouble, which made me feel relieved. I felt very safe having someone look after me.Not that it looked too dangerous. We were the only two people around the area. I didn't see anyone suspicious around as I made a brief scan of the area.Nothing bad could happen as long as I had this person around. I completely trusted that he wouldn't let anything happen to me. Dax wouldn't let any of his people fail me, especially after Jason had broken into the mansion.I knew Dax still felt guilty about that happening. Neither one of us had brought it up since Jason had been taken away. I hoped nothing else like that would happen again. It was unfortunate that the car was so far away this time. The chauffeur couldn't find an easier parking spot. As I came to an alley, there was a very scruffy looking young man. His ha
