"So you're a little weird? Work it! A little different? Own it! Better to be a nerd than one of the herd"
~Mandy Hale
"Lyra can I have a word with you." The calculus teacher called as I was about to exit the classroom.
"Ooh lil miss Einstein's in trouble today." My classmate mocked
"Or maybe she wants more homework." another teased making the entire class laugh.
"Don't mind them." Mr Robertson told me after everyone had gone.
"I don't." I shrugged, truthfully speaking I've never cared about what my classmates had to say about me, my only focus was on my studies.
"OK." He looked at me a little taken aback by my response.
"You wanted to speak to me about something." I reminded.
"Right." he nodded "so I've been looking at your grades-"
"Did I fail any?" I asked feeling my heart skip a beat as panic set within me.
"No, no, calm down." he chuckled "You my dear are a perfect straight A+ student" he complimented and I let out a sigh of relief, I was the best in my class. "But there is one problem though."
"And what could that be Mr Robertson?"
"You don't have any ECAs."
"ECAs?" I looked at him confused.
"Sorry, I meant to say you don't have any extracurricular activities or physical fitness."
"I can't participate in any form of sports due to my illness, the administration knows that." I told him.
"I know, I'm head of the sports department" he reminded "but even with your illness, you can still participate in other activities."
"Like?" I frowned.
"I don't know, debate, music." He shrugged and pushed a paper towards me. "There's a list of all the activities you can participate in."
"Is this necessary?" I glanced between him and the paper.
"Yes, you can't just rely on your good grades, even college applications require not only your grades but other things too."
"And how many do I have to pick?" I asked staring at the paper with numerous activities printed on it in black.
"One but if you wa-"
"One is enough." I got the paper and packed it in my backpack. "Was that all?"
"That will be all, you can go."
"OK." I nodded and got up from my seat walking straight to the door before he stopped me.
"Oh and Lyra" he called and I turned to face him "you need to pick an activity by Friday this week."
"Ok sir." I nodded and left.
"Hello Albert." I smiled at my driver who like always replied with a nod and opened the door for me to get in just, in normal situations or better yet in movies, I thought we would have developed a close relationship or some sort due to the fact that he had been my personal driver since I was 4 years old but no, that's not the case for us, he rarely speaks to me and if he did then its to respond to my greeting or inform me about some important information my mother told him to convey.
"How's been your day Albert?" I asked trying to make effort like always but I ended up giving up when he kept responding with one word answers. I took out my journal and started writing whatever came to mind.
"I was told to pick an extracurricular activity today." I spoke breaking the ice between my mother and I as we sat having dinner at the round oak table.
"You don't need one." she spoke in without even bothering to look up from her plate.
"I told Mr Robertson the same thing but he said I need one because I don't participate in any physical fitness activities."
"I already told you, you don't need one of those time consuming activities, they will only distract you." She spoke dismissively. "I'll have a word with your principal tomorrow."
"Yes ma'am." I sighed and we continued our meal in silence with only the sound of the cutlery clanking against the plate echoing in the spacious dining room.
"I got an A+ in AP chemistry." I beamed trying to make conversion and ease the tension as dinner with my mother felt like a ride home with Albert.
"As you should, I'm not spending money for you to waste it." She responded in one breath. "Did you see the Harvard form I sent to you?"
"Harvard form?" I quizzed.
"Yes the Harvard form, have you not seen it." she glared sternly at me. "Are you serious with your life-"
"I did see it." I interupted her ranting session and masked my confusion. "It just slipped my mind." Lord knew I didn't wanting to get yelled at.
"Have you filled it in yet?"
"Isn't it too early for me to start filling college applications?" I asked. I know she wanted to get rid of me but it was too soon, it was barely March.
"It's never too early, we need to secure your place there now."
"What if-"
"Just fill the form and send it to me." She silenced me. "Or do you want me to send you to your grandparents." She cocked her eyebrow.
"No ma'am." I shook my head quickly.
Most people loved their grandparents and vise versa but for me it wasn't the same, I feared them and dreaded them and always stayed as far away as possible when they visited. We couldn't be in the same space for more than a minute without them making a nasty comment about me. And if being around them for less than 24 hours felt like I'd been in prison for years what more staying with them.
"Its almost 8 go and study." She shooed me out of the dining room not even bothering to ask if I was satisfied or not but hey it's my mother, she never cared.
I went into my study room which once was a music room belonging to my father, after they divorced she had all the instruments thrown out and destroyed reason being they reminded her of my of him and she hated that.
Pushing all non-school related thoughts out of my head, I got my books and begun to study like any normal highschool girl would on a chilly Wednesday night, who am I kidding, my age mates are probably rotting their brains with useless information on the internet or television while others were probably spending quality time with their families but here I was unsatisfied and alone, studying topics yet to be taught by my teachers all because my mum wanted me to.
Huffing I grabbed my calculus book and a paper fell out of it. I picked up the paper and read what was on it. School Extra Curricular Activities it read. This was the paper Mr Robertson had given me earlier. I put it away under my other books, knowing there would be no need for me to go through it and check what I would like to pick because I knew all to well my mum was going to do everything in her power to get me out of it, she always had a way of getting people to do whatever she wanted.
Sighing deeply I carried on with my studying.
Nerd life is so much better than regular life ~John GreenThe next morning I woke up and followed my usual routine."Lyra." The AP biology teacher called as I we were finishing up with the quiz he had brought."Sir." I looked up only to see the school secretary standing beside him."The principal wants to see you." He told me."Oooh." The class gasped "Hush." The teacher hushed them. "Did I do something wrong?" I frowned. "That's for you to go and find out." She shrigged. Trying to hide my panic, I got up and followed the secretary to the principals office where I found my mother was already seated facing him and Mr Robertson."Take a seat Ms Colburn." The principal motioned me to the seat beside my mums. Cautiously, I took a seat. "I suppose you know as to why you are here right Ms Colburn." he started"Not quite" I shook my head earning a glare from my mum."Well you are here concerning the pending issue of your extracurricular activity." he stated "I'm sure Mr R
Everyone's a nerd inside. I don't care how cool you are. ~Channing Tatum."All these things are absurd and time consuming!" My mum exclaimed as she went through the list of activities later in the evening."I could join the music club." I suggested earning a glare and I shut up immediately."And what exactly will you do in music club Lyra, please do enlighten me." she taunted."Nothing." I sighed chewing on the inside of my cheek. It was a habit I had developed over the years, it sometime helped to calm my nerves whenever I was around my mother or grandparents."I thought so" she scoffed. "Cheerleading, you can barely cheer a baby up" she let out the same small laugh like she had been using for the last hour. "All this is trash, its decided, you are going to a new school.""I checked the Harvard form, there is a spot for me to fill in my extracurricular activity." I spoke quickly."We'll make up on.""What happens when they ask me questions?""You'll be prepped in adv
The only rule is don't be boring and dress cute wherever you go. Life is too short to blend in. ~Paris Hilton "Mr Robertson please." I pleaded with my calculus teacher. "It was your choice Lyra not mine, you'll have to handle her." He responded. "I can't, you need to hear me out, Janet Yuki is the worst, I need someone else to tutor." "No, how many students will you change all because you can't stand their behavior, it's not a valid reason." "Easy for you to say." I scoffed. "Really, I teach all those 'dull self absorbed' human beings and I don't have a choice, yeah, I've got it easy." He responded sarcastically. "Well I'd rather transfer schools than deal with that dumb, self centered bully." I stated picking up my backpack off the ground. "Fine, I'll give you an 'easier student'." Mr Robertson sighed giving in to my demand. "Really, thank you" I smiled. "You are so lucky you are my star student." He rolled his eyes "You'll meet him in the gym after school." "OK, thank you
If it matters, it produces controversy.~Jay GreeneAfter leaving Mr Robertson's office, Raphael and I stood in the hallway."What subjects are you-" I started but he didn't let me finish. "I have an important meeting to attend to right now so we'll do this tomorrow." He told me."But Mr Robertson sa-" I started but he cut me off."I heard what he said." He started. "I'll be free tomorrow, we can start then." Not bothering to get a reply he walked away. "Whatever." I whispered to myself and went to the library so I could do my calculus homework. "Raphael." I called for the third time."What." He groaned turning to face him. Classes were over and he was with his friends, the same ones who bullied me, going for what looked like practice. "What do you want." He glared at me. "It's time for our tutorial." I reminded. "Ok, I'll meet you there when I'm done with practice." He shrugged. "That's what you've been saying for the past month." I sighed. "Well I said it again." "You can
Its not selfish to put yourself first when you create your life. When you take time for yourself you make everything better. ~Tom AndersonMy eyes flattered open at the sound of my alarm clock ringing and with a groan I shut it off and forced myself out of bed into the bathroom. With a sigh I grabbed a scrunchie and tied my hair into a bun so it wouldn't get soaked while I took a shower. Stripping out of my pyjamas I got into the shower cubicle and twisted the tap letting the warm water fall on my body. After the shower I got out, wrapped my body in a towel and dried myself before I went to the sink and brushed my teeth. "Good morning sunshine." I greeted myself as I stated at my reflection in the mirror above the sink. Going back into my room I went to the closet and started looking for what to wear. Yes I had outfits picked out for a whole month but today was different, it was a weekend but not just any normal weekend, my grandparents were having the family get together they h
The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.~Dolly PartonAbsolutely no words could explain the joy I felt when the Uber drove out of my grandparent’s yard. The weekend felt like eternity in hell, especially with all the demeaning comments they made about me and how my father was always a topic of discussion during every meal.“I’ll call you when we land.” My mother spoke into the phone. She had been talking on phone since we got into the Uber, by the attitude she was showing towards me I could tell she was angry at me.“Mum we’re here.” I told her when the car parked.“I have eyes, I can see that.” She responded in a sharp tone.Sighing I got out of the car and grabbed my bags. We did all the necessary procedures before boarding the plane and just like always she sat 4 rows away from me, I should have been happy about that but the thought that my mother didn’t even care to see if I was alright after the I had a flare up yesterday. At the age of 5 I was
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. ~Steve Jobs It was Monday and just as I had hoped the rush had cleared on most parts of my body except for my face but it was not as bad as before, I could hide my face with a mask. My mother an Arnold dropped me off at school and I walked into the premises going straight to my locker so I could get the books I needed for the first 3 periods. “Hey hot stuff.” Marcus grinned slamming my locker shut. If I hadn’t moved away quickly he would have hurt my hand. “Ooh she’s quick.” One of the guys he was with teased. “Leave me alone.” I told them. “What will you do if we don’t?” He taunted pushing me against the metal locker. My back hit the locker with a lot of impact and I knew it was going to leave a mark. “What, can’t speak anymore.” He taunted coming closer. “Leave her alone you jerks!” A feminine voice growled from behind
The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.~Nelson MandelaWe went to a small coffee shop close to the school because Raphael demanded he wanted coffee before we could start our tutorial session and we ended up deciding to have it from there instead because it was quiet.“Your black iced coffee and blueberry muffin.” The waitress said in a flirty tone while placing the cup and plate before Raphael. “And your strawberry green smoothie.” She put my cup in front of me.“Thanks.” I mumbled and put the straw in my mouth sucking the content in the cup.“Do you need anything else?” The waitress asked leaning towards Raphael.“Yeah, your number.” He smirked in response making her blush profusely. With a big grin she leaned over grabbing the smart phone in his hands and put in her number on it.“Text me.” She winked walking away.“Oh I will.” He smiled licking his lips and rubbing his hands together.“You’re disgusting.” I gagged.“Says the girl d
When you're doing the work you're meant to do, it feels right and every day is a bonus, regardless of what you're getting paid. ~Oprah WinfreyLyra It was strange, everything was strange, from how he ignored the constant calls to his expression when he went away to answer it and the jovial expression he held upon returning. I thought my family had bipolar people but I was wrong, Raphael Vicario topped the list. After escorting me to the car like he always did, I expected him to call me later in the night―like always. I anticipated his call but I never came, after all the effort he had undertaken to get a hold of me I thought he would call, Bria did to but he never did, maybe he was done with me.Shifting my focus from Raphael to the upcoming makeup test, I studied hard, I even woke up extra early just to patch up on anything I had missed while I studied the previous nights. When it was almost time for school, I took a quick shower and dressed up.◘“I’m sorry I’m late.” I apologize
He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life. ~Muhammad AliRaphael “What is this?” My stepmother growled looking between me and the guard that carried my unconscious brother.“Is the doctor here yet?” I asked one of the house helps and she nodded. “Good, have him set up in his room.”“Raphael!” Stepmother growled angered by my decision to ignore her.“Also,” I continued to converse with the young help. “Have the chef prepare something for him to eat when he wakes up.”“Raphael Oliver Vic-”“Can you not take a hint lady!” I snapped. “Do I need to spell it out that I’m ignoring you, is that what it will take for you to understand.”She was taken back by my reaction, I never raised my voice and that shocked her.“You, take him to his room.” I instructed the guard who nodded curtly before taking to the staircase.Rotating my shoulder blades, I made my way to the kitchen, I thought after yelling I would be left alone be left alone but no, the heels cluck
You can't build a reputation on what you are going to do. ~Henry FordRaphael Replacing the navy shift on my body with a black one, I changed my shoes and added a jacket before moving to grab two large duffle bags and stuffing them with paper and a few dollar notes on the top to make it see as though they where filled entirely with money.I had waited until my tutorial session with Lyra was over and she had safely gotten into the car before making my way to Leo’s, he had everything in place and I had less than an hour to rescue my stupid brother.“Crates are in.” Leo told me as he walked into the room.“Thanks.” I nodded zipping up the last bag and dropping it to the ground. “If you have something to say just come out with it already.” I grumbled.Since I got here he had been watching me intensely, he only ever did that if he had something to say and after this damn rescue mission, I was not going to be in the mood to have a conversation.“I noticed you and Lyra.” He said quietly.“
A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others. ~Ayn RandRaphael She hit me, Lyra Colburn had just balled her small hand into a fist and hit my chest. It did not hit hard enough for it to hurt or leave a mark but it was enough to make me notice. When I averted my gaze from her little fists to her face, I noticed her entire demeanor had changed, she was no longer uneasy and her eyes where calm despite her best efforts to glare at me.“Did you just hit me?” I smirked finding her small action amusing.“Yes.” She raised her fist and hit my chest again twice.“I will report you for assault.” I suppressed my grin.“Go ahead.” She scoffed hitting me again. “Don’t you ever threaten me or Bria.” “Bria?” Grabbing her arm and holding it in place. I repeated the name confused as to who she was talking about.“Yes, the girl you threatened.” She stated pulling her arm away.“Clarify, I threaten a lot of people you know.” It came out as a joke but it was t
Everyone can master a grief but he that has it. ~William ShakespeareRaphael“Glad people with emergencies could join us.” Jasmine’s voice came sharp and taunting as her eyes trained on Lyra who in turn drew a deep breath. Her fingers flew to the hem of the cute peach sweater she had on that went really well with the soft tone of her skin and the rest of her outfit which consisted of a dark jeans, a white button down―I assumed based on the collar and the bottom that peaked out of the sweater and a pair of converse. Even though her outfit was basic and simple, it looked perfect on her―everything did.“Leave her alone.” Leo grumbled beating me to it. He held an irritated expression at Jasmine’s words to Lyra.“I was just-”“Leave her alone.” He repeated this time with more authority than the last.“Alright, geez, y’all are coming to her rescue as though I’ve even attacked her.” She scoffed after Leo had interrupted her.“You are picking unnecessary fights Jasmine.” Pedro chimed in, cle

Character is what you are in the dark. ~UnknownLyra It had been a week and so far so good, I had managed to steer clear from Raphael and any trouble that came with him―I couldn’t find myself getting attached to him, not now, I needed to focus on school, he was a distraction, after a careful analysis and receiving my B+ graded paper, I knew my mother was right, I paid little no concentration on my school work since he had come into my life and the big letter marked in red on my answer sheet proved that.Every time I saw him in school or when he called my heart could skip a beat. I wanted to speak to him, to go back to having our late night conversations but I couldn’t, especially not after my encounter with that girl, he was taken―had a girlfriend that was willing to fight tooth and nail for him and I was never the type to ruin people’s relationships hence, I was going to stay away from him.“Are you awake?” Bria asked quietly shutting the door to the study.“Yes, I am.” I nodded ra
The pursuit of truth will set you free even if you never catch up with it. ~Clarence DarrowRaphael It had been a good weekend, one I hadn’t experienced in the longest time and it was all because of one person. Small as she was, she held so much power and could turn even the shittest of days into the best with only her words.Over the past 3 days we had spoken, I found myself smiling and chuckling at memories of our late night conversations that would flash in my mind every now and then. I rarely smiled or was happy to talk to someone the way I did Lyra.Lyra Colburn, without even knowing it was slowly breaking down every wall I had built up and melting away the ice around my heart, she made me feel emotions I had trained myself never to experience and I had been doing a great job until now. This girl had me excited to go to school, the only reasons I ever did attend school were Leo and Emilia, they made it worth sitting in a classroom for hours listening to a teacher blubber about
A promise made is a debt unpaid. ~Robert W. ServiceRaphael After spending the rest of my day with Lyra, I couldn’t seem to get enough of her. Her presence brought a certain calm to my life and I wanted to feel that at all times. Especially after getting back to my parents― my father and biological mother at each other’s throats as my stepmother tried to step in and my older sister quietly watched them sipping on her margarita, it was never too early to be drinking in our household.“There you are.” My sister announced and all eyes snapped to me.Great, just what I needed, I knew my sister had probably been trying to get away from our parents and whatever where arguing about but had failed miserably, but now that I was here, she had her opportunity and was not going to let it slip away, it was always like this.“Raphael, where have you been?” My mother went straight to scolding.Unlike most parents and children, mine and I rarely shared pleasantries when we met, it was always some s
