Tremont almost couldn't recognize the woman lying so still on the small bed. Bandages covered some of the bruises on the frail body which the provided hospital grown had failed to hide. His heart gnawed with the same intensity of anxiousness as it had when he had first found her under the heavy rain yesterday. How did she turn out like this in only the space of some weeks? The woman he had sent to prison had been healthy-looking. Now, she was painfully thin, her complexion was pale and waxy, her previously long hair was now short and dry, he even spotted some fresh bruises on her face.

' She is suffering from a severe case of cholera, combined with the infections from the untreated bruises on her body, if she had been brought any later, I'm afraid that it would have been difficult to save her ' The doctor's words echoed in his mind.

The more he stared at her unmoving form, the uncomfortable sensation in his heart
