She froze, not kissing me.
Before I knew It, she shoved me back and slapped me across my face. “How dare you..” The slap stung on my cheeks. My drunken state couldn't put it together and then I heard a voice. The manager was here, “Is there a problem?” he asked looking at the girl then diverted his eyes to me, His eyes widened in shock and realization. “You're fired” He told her. “What…but he–” He cut her off. “You heard me, Pack your things and get out,” He told her. She was angry muttering a few words before picking her things to leave. After she left, The manager apologized for her rude behaviour, letting me know the drinks were on them. I blinked, not fully understanding what I did because of my drunken state. But I was amused. I woke up with a hangover. My head ached me so badly and my face hurt. My clothes were on the floor and my room looked like hell. My vision was blurry. I called a maid to get me a glass of water. I remembered drinks, frustration ... .then the waitress. I got up, my memory sharpened remembering She slapped me and not just a girl, a server, a common waitress. I never imagined someone would have the audacity to lay their hands on me but she spiked my interest. She's lucky I was drunk. I needed to know who she was though. I was curious. She acted differently from what I expected. She stood for herself. Very interesting. I got to the office earlier than usual. Immediately my workers saw me, they stiffened and stopped ģossipimg. All greeting me while avoiding eye contact. I was not interested in their greetings. “Victor” I called through the intercom. Victor arrived in less than a minute. He knew I hated waiting and wouldn't tolerate it especially from him. Victor has been my loyal assistant, even working for my dad before be abandoned the company. Victor helped us restore the company and because of that, he was the only one I ha respect for but I was still his boss. “I need you to go to the address of this bar, Ask about the girl that was fired. I need to know everything about her” I was direct handing him the paper with the address. “Okay Sir” Victor answered, taking his leave. An hour later, he returned with a report. “Her name is Elena Carter. She lives with her mother who has a long term illness of Hemolytic Anemia, a rare blood disease and her brother. She works two part time jobs to pay her mother's hospital bills and her brothers schooling. She got fired from the restaurant yesterday and Her mom recently got discharged from St Vincent's Hospital because of incomplete hospital bills.” “She doesn't have the money to pay the bills” That caught my attention. “Yes sir” I leaned back in my chair, trying to process what Victor just told me. A thought came to my head. She needed money to pay her mum's medical bills and I needed a wife to get my mother off my back. I smirked, I had an Idea. I asked Victor to get me her number while I sent my receptionist to draft a contract for me. The marriage contract. After Victor gave me the number. I called her. She answered after the second ring. “Hello, I'm I speaking to Elena Carter” There was a pause first before she answered unsure if she should. “ Yes…” “Okay, My name is Alexander Sterling. The guy that got you fired at the bar yesterday. I have a proposal for you. where are you so I can send a car to pick you up”. She scoffed “What..and why would I want to meet up with you after making me lose my Job”. I expected that. “It's concerning your mother's medical bills. I have a solution to that”. There was silence for a while before she spoke. “How did you know about my mother” “I will send a car to pick you up. I will explain when you get here. Where are you right now?. “Alright, I'm at St Vincent's Hospital”. “Okay, My driver will be there soon” I ended the call. “Victor, I need you to send a driver to pick her up then escort here to meet me” I dismissed him. As he left, I just smiled to myself. This was just the beginning. Now my mother will get off my back. Few hours later, I heaŕd a knock. “Come in”.Elena's POV I was in the hospital waiting to see my mother's Doctor to beg him to give us more time when I got the call. I was waiting outside when a Black SUV with tinted windows pulled over. The driver's glass went down “ Miss Elena Carter.?” He asked. “Yes” I answered, still being skeptical. He got me fired from my Job so what does he possibly have for me? As far as helping my mother, I needed to hear him out.We arrived at the office. The office was magnanimous, a tall glass sleek building high enough to reach the sky. The sunlight reflected on the building giving it this glow. At the entrance, the revolving doors gleamed under the sun light, and a steady flow of sharply dressed employees moved in and out.A man on black ironed expensive suit with black hair slicked back wearing a black glasses greeted me outside.“Miss Carter?” His tone was professional but friendly. I nodded. “I'm Victor, Alexander's Secretary. Please follow me”I followed him. The lobby was busy, high ceilin
Elena's POV “I need time to think,” I finally said.Alexander nodded, as if he had expected that response. “You have twenty-four hours.”I blinked. “That’s not enough…”“That’s more than enough,” he interrupted, standing from his chair. He towered over me, his presence overwhelming. “If you’re serious about helping your mother, you’ll make your decision quickly.” Arrogant man. But he was right about one thing, this wasn’t just about me.I stood up from the chair, gripping the file tightly as I made my way out. Victor was waiting by the elevator, his expression unreadable as he led me back down.As the doors closed behind me, I realized my entire life was about to change. And I had twenty-four hours to decide if I was willing to go through with it or not.I held my phone in my hand, staring at Sophie’s name on the screen. I wanted to call her and tell her everything. How I ended up in a business deal with a man like Alexander Sterling. A handsome Jerk, the same one who got me fired
(Alexander's POV) The deal was done. Now I just needed to let my mother know. Elena sat in the chair across from me, the weight of her decision hadn't fully settled in yet. I could see it in her eyes, she couldn't face me and her hands clasped together on her lips were shaking. Her phone rang, cutting through the heavy silence. She picked it up immediately, It must have been an important person. “Ryan, calm down” Her voice was shaking but firm. I straightened. “I don't know, but they took me and mum to a big hospital,” the voice on the other end said; Ryan. “Do you know these people?” I saw the shift in her expression. Relief. “Ryan, go home. Wait for me there. I'II explain when I get back.” “Elena, what is going on?” “Just go home,” she snapped, ending the call and pushing back the chair. She was already moving toward the door when I stood, blocking her path. “Where are you going?” She glared up at me, “I need to go.” “No, You're coming with me.” She tried to mov
Elena's POVJust like that, he turned and pulled me inside past the stairs leading to a long hallway which I assumed led to the rooms. Alexander left his mother and Victoria standing there, stunned. I was relieved when we left but I had this strange feeling, like unease because that was supposed to be my mother-in-law and it seems she and Alexander don't have a tight relationship. She doesn't like me so how will it be when I officially get married to him. I did it for my mum and brother so whatever happens. I can survive it.I kept thinking though, how Ryan's life will be inside this house. I could take it but would Ryan be able to?. Inside, the mansion was just as overwhelming as the outside. Marble floors, Crystal chandeliers and furniture that must cost a lot. The house was magnificent. I barely had time to process any of it before Alexander spoke again.“You should ignore my mother and Victoria. Keep your head high and play the role that is expected of You.”He said, his voice un
Alexander's POVAfter that whole scene with my mother, I needed to regain control. She had spent her life trying to manipulate me into doing what she wanted, but I wasn't a child anymore. I wasn't the boy who used to flinch under her cold words and follow her blindly. Now, I was the one in control.I went to my home office. The room was dimly lit and clear with a few stacks of books on the table. I walked to the bar at the corner, I poured myself a glass of water.Taking a slow sip, I made my way to my desk and sank into the leather chair. I placed the glass down. My eyes flicked to the clock on the wall. I had wasted enough of my morning entertaining my mother's demands. There was still work to be done.I picked up the phone and dialled my receptionist, Natalie.“Sir,” She answered immediately. Her tone alert.“Send a message to the board members and the entire department,” I instructed. “I want them informed about the upcoming organizational dinner. Make it Clear that attendance is
Elena's POVEleanor's smile was cold. “Well, well. What a surprise.”Victoria scoffed and rolled her eyes at me. “If it isn't the miss wannabe Socialite. Alexander can't be serious.“I'm very serious” Alexander's voice came out of nowhere. Just then, I saw Alexander was already here walking in like he owned the Store. His presence commanded the attention of everyone in the room. His tailored navy suit Ironed, a single wrinkle not in sight. He moved with effortless confidence. His expression didn't waver as he met his mother's gaze.Eleanor let out a sharp laugh. “Darling, this joke has gone on long enough.”Alexander took a step closer. “I told you before and I will say it again. It's not a joke and I'm very serious about this.”Victoria twisted her lips in disgust. Her manicured nails digging into the leather of her designer purse. “You can't be. This is ridiculous, Alexander. You're actually going through with this?” she let out a bitter laugh. “For her.” Her gaze landed on me, ful
(Alexander's POV)I adjusted the the cuff of my tailored tux, my patience wearing thin as I scanned the room. The ballroom was already filled with guests, all mingling and exchanging pleasantries. Victor was outside greeting the guests and I greeted them once once. Everything was going smoothly except for one thing. Elena wasn't here.My jaw clenched as I checked the time again. She was supposed to be here by now. She was 20 minutes late and this wasn't just some gathering.Where the hell was She?I was beyond annoyed but I controlled myself then I signalled for Maria, her assigned maid. “Go upstairs and tell Elena to hurry up.” I ordered.Maria nodded. “Yes sir.”As she dissapeared up the grand staircase, I relaxed my face. The last thing I needed was to show any sign of frustration. Just Then, the arrival of one of the oldest and influential board member, Mr Henderson caught my attention. The man was in his late fifties, dressed in an expensive dark suit, with his elegantly dresse
Elena's POVHenry drove in silence, the soft sound of the car engine filling the space between us. I wasn't in the mood for talks, I just wanted to see Ryan, Sophie and mum.I leaned my head against the window, staring at the buildings and city lights outside. My thoughts were a mess, but the biggest one pressing on my mind was, Did I really make the right choice?Just as I was lost in my thoughts, my phone buzzed.I sighed, pulling my phone out of my bag to check who was calling. Sophie. I knew I would get a call from her soon. My stomach twisted.Bracing myself, I answered.“Elena Carter!” Sophie’s voice practically blew through the speaker. “What the hell am I looking at?!”I winced. “Sophie–”“Don't Sophie me! You got engaged to Alexander Sterling, and you hid it from me?!.I swallowed. “I can expla–”Before I could finish, she cut me off. Her voice lower and less deadly.“Lena, What's going on seriously?”“I'll explain when I get home.”“You better. Because I swear, if you don't
Alexander’s POV“I would rather show you in person,” He said cautiously and with a sense of urgency. “Where are you?” I asked him.“At the office, Sir.”“Okay, meet me in the conference room.” I said, then ended the call.Victor’s voice never sounded this urgent so I knew it had to be serious for him to call me like this.I put on my clothes, took my car keys and drove to the office. Normally, I would tell my driver to drive me but I knew it was a private matter so I decided to go alone. When I arrived, Victor was already waiting, a folder in his hands and a grim expression on his face.“What did you find?” I asked him, my patience wearing thin.Victor opened the folder and spread the documents across the table.“These messages were sent to Reymond from someone inside the company,” He said. “At first, we thought it was just an employee, but the level of detail in these encrypted messages suggest something else.”I frowned, looking at the documents.“What kind of detail?”“Schedules,
Elena’s POVRyan walked beside me as we left the hospital. The silence surrounding us was heavy, a weight I couldn't lift no matter how I tried. The doctor’s words kept echoing in my mind. “Her health is declining. Prepare for the possibility that she may not have much time left.” I wanted to scream, to blame someone for my mother’s health declining but I had to be strong for Ryan. He had only me and if I broke down, he would too. Mum wouldn’t want that.I placed a hand on Ryan’s arm as we reached the car. “Let’s go home.” I said softly. He nodded. His face was pale and neutral.Neither of us spoke throughout the drive home. We just sat there staring outside but the silence spoke volumes.By the time we got home. My real home, the apartment I lived in for half of my life before I got married. Ryan collapsed onto the couch. “I don’t know what to do, Elena.” He finally said, his voice breaking a little. “I don’t want to lose her.”“We won’t Ryan. We’re not giving up.” I said firmly. “
Alexander’s POVThe office was suffocating. The air was heavy with the weight of unanswered questions. I stood by the window, staring outside and thinking, my jaw clenched tightly.Reymond was a shadow seeping into every corner of my life.I spent hours going through the document. Trying to piece together his next move with Daniel and Victor, yet it felt like no matter how much I worked, or how much I read through the files, I couldn’t find anything. I was always two steps behind him. That was the thing about my father. He was the man who played the long game. The company was my life. I sacrificed too much to let him get it.“Sir,” Victor called, snapping me out of my thoughts. He stood by the door to my office, a cautious expression on his face.“What is it?” I asked sharply.“We have received confirmation that Reymond has been meeting with additional shareholders,” he said, stepping inside and placing a folder on my desk. “He’s gaining numbers.”I flipped through the folder, checkin
Elena’s POV“Elena,” He said, his voice panicked. “It’s mom.”My heart stopped. “What happened?”“She collapsed.” He said quickly. “As she was taking a walk in the hospital but she has been taken back to her room now.”I grabbed my coàt and rushed out the door. I called Henry to take me to the hospital. The drive to the hospital wasn’t long but all through, my mind kept racing with worst-case scenarios. When I arrived, I saw Ryan sitting in front of the room staring at his hands. “Ryan.” I called out to him.He looked up in shock. Then he got up and hugged me.“It’s alright. Mum is going to be okay.” I said, rubbing his hair.“What exactly happened?”“I came to see mum. So she said she wanted to go for a walk.” He said, his voice shaking. “I took permission and she said it was okay so I took mum, we were just talking and laughing and suddenly, she just collapsed.” He was barely audible now, the tears in his voice trying to come out fully.“It’s okay, Alright?” I told him, holding his
Elena's POVThe morning light shone through the large windows of the Sterling mansion, reflecting on the marble floors.I sat in the corner of the grand sitting room, sipping a cup of tea I really didn't want. The house was quiet and I woke up with a headache so Maria made a hot cup of herbal tea to soothe the headache. She was the only one who actually cared for me since I started staying here. The wedding. The whispers. The coldness in his voice when he told me we would be sleeping in seperate rooms.I hadn't seen Alexander since the night of the wedding. He’d thrown himself inside work since his father arrived. Leaving me to wander this massive house on my own.I wasn’t angry, not exactly. But there was a growing ache in my chest, a feeling of loneliness I couldn’t shake.I’d married him for my family, for Ryan and Mom. But now, I was beginning to wonder if i had made the biggest mistake of my life.I knew Alexander was dealing with his father, with the company, with things I could
Alexander's POV The day was finally over. The sterling mansion, once buzzing with noise and activity, had grown quiet all because of Reymond sterling, my so-called father. His name alone made me boil and so angry. I hated him so much. I was married. The weight of the wedding ring on my hand felt so heavy. I stood in the doorway of my room after that whole scene in the study. I needed to refresh and look at that document again. Elena had to watch everything. She saw a side of our family no one had seen and now I knew she had questions but I couldn't answer them. I was exhausted. I turned to see her behind me. She was still in her reception gown. The glow of the corridor lamps softened her features. Making her look so innocent and beautiful. She was tired though. It showed in her face. She glanced up when she noticed me staring at her. “Alexander.” Her voice was low and quiet. “The wedding is over.” I said coldly. “The deal is sealed. We are legally married.” She didn'
Elena’s POVThe place had gone silent immediately when the uñknown man who I later found out was Alexander's father arrived. The air once filled with laughter and clinking of glasses became silent like a graveyard.Everybody watching the drama unfold. All eyes locked on one man.Alexander's father. The father he never spoke about.Cameras flashed, reporters whispering to each other and catching every shocking moment of the reunion. And then, before anyone could react.Alexander moved.Anger burned in his eyes as he stormed towards his father, his grip tightening around his hand.“Inside. Now.”Reymond, completely unmoved, just smirked. “Ah, a private conversation. How thoughtful.”Alexander didn't respond. He just dragged him through the party and inside to his office study at home.A murmur rose from the crowd.Sophie used her eyes to ask me if everything was okay.I replied to her saying I don't know but I was going to find out.Eleanor stood up alert. Her face was pale and full of
(Alexander’s POV)A month later, I stood at the altar of a grand catholic church dressed in a sleek black tuxedo with Daniel by my side dressed in a black suit. Waiting for a wedding I didn't want. The air smelled of incense and fresh roses. Soft glow of candles flickered around the church Illuminating the sculptured designs.People whispered as the music played. They weren't whispering about me.They were whispering about her.The bride. The fact that no one truly understood why I was marrying her. A nobody.Elena appeared at the entrance, dressed in a long white gown, lace trailing behind her as she walked slowly down the aisle. She looked….Presentable.Not breathtaking. Not the kind of woman people expected by my side. But she knew how to play the part. And that was all that mattered. Her expression was calm, composed, her eyes straight ahead as if she wasn't walking into a room full of people who disliked her or had something to say against her. People who didn't want her there.A
(Elena's POV)“Ryan, we need to talk.” I told him.Ryan was sitting on the staircase when I got back.At first I thought he didn't notice me. He looked deep in thoughts. His posture was slouched, elbows resting on his knees, head tilted downward. But the moment I stepped closer, his eyes snapped up to meet mine. I knew then, he saw me when I arrived and he was waiting for me.A part of me felt relieved to see him. The other part? Absolutely scared do what he was about to say. I breathed hard. “Ryan..”He exhaled slowly. “So it's true.”I hesitated. “I–”“You're actually getting married.”I opened my mouth, I wanted to say something but no words came out. Ryan let out a bitter chuckle. “Wow. I thought maybe I didn't hear correctly. Or maybe Sophie got it wrong. But no. You really did it.”I stepped closer to him. “Ryan, I wanted to tell you but I—.”“You didn't tell me.” He cut in sharply. “You let me find out on my own. As usual. Do you know how that felt?”I felt a guilty pain in
