Elena's POV

Just like that, he turned and pulled me inside past the stairs leading to a long hallway which I assumed led to the rooms. Alexander left his mother and Victoria standing there, stunned.

I was relieved when we left but I had this strange feeling, like unease because that was supposed to be my mother-in-law and it seems she and Alexander don't have a tight relationship. She doesn't like me so how will it be when I officially get married to him. I did it for my mum and brother so whatever happens. I can survive it.

I kept thinking though, how Ryan's life will be inside this house. I could take it but would Ryan be able to?. Inside, the mansion was just as overwhelming as the outside. Marble floors, Crystal chandeliers and furniture that must cost a lot. The house was magnificent. I barely had time to process any of it before Alexander spoke again.

“You should ignore my mother and Victoria. Keep your head high and play the role that is expected of You.”He said, his voice unwavering and serious.

I was shocked at his choice of words. “The role expected of me?”

“Yes, This engagement is going to be public knowledge soon. You will be seen, talked about and every move you make will be watched. You have to make sure they don't get to you.”

I exhaled slowly, trying to process everything. “And what about you? Are you just going to keep handling everything like a business deal?”

For a brief second, something flickered in his eyes, but it was gone before I could even guess it. “That's the only way things gets done.”

Who made him like this? And just what had he suffered or gone through to become this heartless, emotionless and cold. He turned away and pulled out his phone. And just like that our conversation was over. He was done talking. I just studied him and waited staring into the hallway. Then hee called someone. A few rings and the person picked the call.

“Victor,” he said through the phone.

“I want an organizational dinner arranged immediately,” He ordered. “Make sure the press is there. We need to shift attention from the East Coast drilling situation.”

“Yes sir, Understood.” Victor responded.

Alexander's gaze flicked to me, what now? I wondered.

“And You will take Elena shopping. She needs to be properly dressed for it.”

I froze. Shopping.

Before I could protest, He walked away. My fingers clenched into fist, Just great. In less than 24 hours I signed my life away to him. He has been using me to do different things. I haven't even had a chance to go see Ryan or how my mum is doing. Even Sophie, She must be worried.

“Miss Carter, the car is ready for us to go,” Someone said, Interrupting my thoughts. Victor. He was fast.

“Ohhh ... .Alright” I replied, following him. When Alexander left, I had no idea where he disappeared to but it was clear he had no intention of explaining himself to me. a few minutes later, Victor arrived.

Victor barely spoke as we drove. I turned to look out the window, taking in the nicee views of towering buildings, high end restaurants. We even passed the one I use to work at. I was tempted to stop and take Sophie along but Victor would never agree.

He always followed Alexander's orders without questions. He was like a robot and he was good at it.

“Has Alexander always been like that?” I asked, breaking the silence.

Victor didn't even glance at me. “Like what?”

“Cold. Controlling.”

He hesitated. “Mr Sterling is just focused.”

Why did he hesitate? He knew something but he didn't say anything again. I knew he wanted me to drop the topic but I was getting married to this man. I had a right to know so I might as well try my luck.

“That's not an answer.” I countered.

Victor sighed. “He doesn't trust easily and for good reason.”

That was the closest to a personal comment I had heard from Victor since I meant him. I had just one last question for him.

“And how long have you been working for Alexander?”

“12 years now.” He answered straight without looking my way. No wonder he knew Alexander a lot and understood him well enough.

When we arrived at the luxury boutique, my stomach twisted. I had never been in a luxury boutique before, and I had certainly never been dragged into one by a man who treated shopping like a military operation.

Victor walked ahead of me, barely even giving me a chance to pick what I like. I trailed behind him like a lost puppy. I glanced at the price tags of some things and woahh!, It had more zeros than my bank account. On a normal day, I wouldn't dare enter a boutique like this.

“Pick what you want,” Victor said, sifting through the racks like he was assembling a uniform. This was funny. I wish Sophie was here, she needed to see this.

“I don't need much, Just something simple.”

Victor actually chuckled a little. First, I blinked. Did he just laugh a little? That was surprising to say the least. “Miss Carter, You're about to become Mrs sterling. Nothing about your appearance can be simple.”

It meant I was about to be suffocated by wealth and expectations I wanted no part of.

Then he turned to one of the sales girls. “Find her a selection of evening gowns. Something elegant.”

The sales girls nodded eagerly and rushed off to do his bidding. I stood there awkwardly, watching as racks of clothes were wheeled out in front of me. The fabrics were gorgeous; Silk, velvet, chiffon. Dresses that belonged to a world I wasn't part of.

A fitting room was already prepared.

I tried the ones that were picked. But then I saw it, a silk peach-coloured gown with floral designs bringing out the beauty of the dress at the top. It hugged my waist perfectly, with a small slit by the side. It was gorgeous and so beautiful. I knew I loved it immediately. I saw it and I knew Sophie would too.

Just as we were leaving, my worst nightmare began. Eleanor Sterling and Victoria Langford walked in, exuding wealth, power, and barely contained disdain.

Their eyes landed on me, and the temperature seemed to drop.

Eleanor's smile was cold. “Well, well. What a surprise.”

Alexander's POVAfter that whole scene with my mother, I needed to regain control. She had spent her life trying to manipulate me into doing what she wanted, but I wasn't a child anymore. I wasn't the boy who used to flinch under her cold words and follow her blindly. Now, I was the one in control.I went to my home office. The room was dimly lit and clear with a few stacks of books on the table. I walked to the bar at the corner, I poured myself a glass of water.Taking a slow sip, I made my way to my desk and sank into the leather chair. I placed the glass down. There was still work to be done.I picked up the phone and dialled my receptionist, Natalie.“Sir,” She answered immediately. Her tone alert.“Send a message to the board members and the entire department,” I instructed. “I want them informed about the upcoming organizational dinner. Make it Clear that attendance is

(Alexander's POV)I adjusted the the cuff of my tailored tux, my patience wearing thin as I scanned the room. The ballroom was already filled with guests, all mingling and exchanging pleasantries. She was 20 minutes late and this wasn't just some gathering.Where the hell was She?I was beyond annoyed but I controlled myself then I signalled for Maria, her assigned maid. “Go upstairs and tell Elena to hurry up.” I ordered.Maria nodded. “Yes sir.”As she dissapeared up the grand staircase, I relaxed my face. I wasn't in the mood for talks, I just wanted to see Ryan, Sophie and mum.I leaned my head against the window, staring at the buildings and city lights outside. Alexander's POV The day was finally over. The sterling mansion, once buzzing with noise and activity, had grown quiet all because of Reymond sterling, my so-called father. His name alone made me boil and so angry. I hated him so much. I was married. The weight of the wedding ring on my hand felt so heavy. I stood in the doorway of my room after that whole scene in the study. I needed to refresh and look at that document again. Elena had to watch everything. She saw a side of our family no one had seen and now I knew she had questions but I couldn't answer them. I was exhausted. I turned to see her behind me. She was still in her reception gown. The glow of the corridor lamps softened her features. Making her look so innocent and beautiful. She was tired though. It showed in her face. She glanced up when she noticed me staring at her. “Alexander.” Her voice was low and quiet. “The wedding is over.” I said coldly. “The deal is sealed. We are legally married.” She didn'

At that moment, I thought there was hope for us, for me and just maybe he would finally accept me but then he shut me down as usual. I slept in his arms, he held on to me throughout the night and just like That, he shattered my heart in less than a second.I didn't say anything or try to fight against what he said. Reymond started this tradition but after he was gone, it lived on.Eleanor always made sure she decorated everything to her satisfaction. The Sterling mansion had never looked more expensive. That wasn't a compliment. All the chandeliers were polished and sparkling, the staircase was wrapped in golden vines, and roses, white and red lined every inch of the hall like it was a royal coronation. The place was glowing. Eleanor outdid herself. Again.Last time, She was the one that planned it and it was exquisite. After the gala, people talked about how organised and fancy everything was from the decorations to the food. Eleanor lived for all those talks, that was why she made sure she was the one to decorate every year.I stood at the top of the staircase, watching the staff as they rushed to do one thing or the other. I greeted him with my usual cool smile. “I take it went well?”“I won.” He said simply.I guessed right.I sighed. “Good, that's settled then.”I watched as Alexander went to the bar side and poured himself a drink. His movement slow and smooth. But I knew him well enough to sense the tension beneath his composed facade. He had won.The board meeting had gone in his favor. But the question lingered; Why did he call for a board meeting when he knew he was going to lose?Reymond never losses or does things like that except it was part of his main plan. Alexander’s POVThe boardroom was silent. This air was tended and thick, it almost seemed suffocating. I sat at the head of the long polished table, my fingers drumming on the table. I had prepared for this moment but now it was taking long.Across me, the board members sat silently waiting for the meeting to commence. Then the meeting was about to commence, the board members murmured among themselves. Their expressions blank and unreadable, they were all people who knew reymond, had worked alongside him before. Loyalty in a corporate setting was always shaky, never absolute. People changed who they were loyal to depending on the better fit for the position and the person they get the most benefits from. Money and power had a way of turning people's mind.We were waiting for the person that made the complaint and arranged for this board meeting, Reymond. Where was He? My patience was wearing thin.I glanced at Victor, who stood beside me, analysing and watching everyone. Victor had sp

Elena’s POVRyan walked beside me as we left the hospital. The silence surrounding us was heavy, a weight I couldn't lift no matter how I tried. The doctor’s words kept echoing in my mind. “Her health is declining. Prepare for the possibility that she may not have much time left.” I wanted to scream, to blame someone for my mother’s health declining but I had to be strong for Ryan. He had only me and if I broke down, he would too. Mum wouldn’t want that.I placed a hand on Ryan’s arm as we reached the car. “Let’s go home.” I said softly. He nodded. His face was pale and neutral.Neither of us spoke throughout the drive home. We just sat there staring outside but the silence spoke volumes.By the time we got home. My real home, the apartment I lived in for half of my life before I got married. Ryan collapsed onto the couch. “I don’t know what to do, Elena.” He finally said, his voice breaking a little. “I don’t want to lose her.”“We won’t Ryan. We’re not giving up.” I said firmly. “
