Chapter 20

Shocking Encounter

Elena

The office was a bustle of movement with people moving back and forth and the odd person answering a ringing phone.

My head was spinning as I stared at the computer screen, trying to make sense of the figures.

It'd been a few weeks, and I'd been swimming in figures every day.

At first, Conor hadn't trusted me with the more detailed and important figures but a few setbacks had forced his hand and he'd given everything to me to proofread.

And now? I sighed, running a hand through my hair. Now he was only too happy to dump everything on my desk.

“Elena,” a voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I turned to see Conor striding towards me. But the expression on his face gave me pause.

Was something wrong? I wondered, my heart skipping a beat and I wondered if I'd made any mistakes in the figures I'd quoted.

The thought had barely crossed my mind when a sudden hush filled the office space. I craned my neck and spotted Clara, the CEO's secretary.

Chapter 21Shifting PowerDamienElena? What was she doing here? I felt my mind spin as I stood on the spot, my gaze fixed on the door she'd just walked out of. She'd changed, her hair was plusher and she looked more… I couldn't quite place my finger on it, but she was so much more than I could remember. I could still feel the warmth from her lips on mine. Conor had come in with the draft of this proposal and I'd noticed he hadn't been able to explain the subtle sides of it. Out of frustration, I'd asked for the finished proposal and he'd confessed it was handled by someone, Elena. The name had piqued my curiosity, but I'd never imagined in my wildest dreams that she was the one. She'd come in with some documents I recalled, quickly turning to pick them up, my brows shot up as I scanned through the file. This project? She was part of it? I frowned, scanning through the detailed proposal. Oh, she was good, I unconsciously nodded my head as I read through. She'd added second, t

Chapter 22 In confusion Elena I felt the walls closing in on me as I walked through the hallways, a few files in hand. I was so disconcerted I nearly tripped over my feet. Damien was the CEO? The revelation crashed into me like a novelty and I felt my mind bubbling as shock coursed through me. What kind of shitty luck was this? I wondered, out of all the companies I ended up working for. I just had to pick Damien's company. Thoughts and questions filled my mind and I could feel a headache coming on as I tried to think of what to do next. What was I going to do? My mind was blank as I tried to piece my thoughts together. Damien was the CEO and he'd seen me, I didn't think he would just ignore me after he'd seen me. What if he told Albert? My heart stopped and I broke out into a cold sweat. I had to leave. Now! The thought spurred me into action and I quickened my pace and I headed back to my desk space. I couldn't think about Project Houston or whatever, I thought and a feeli

Chapter 23Holding On To Her NerveElenaMy heart felt stuck in my chest as I looked up into Damien's cold eyes and my breath caught in my throat. It took all of my willpower not to stare at him with knowing eyes. Instead, I remained cold, staring at him with dark eyes and a neutral expression. “What's going on?” Damien pressed, he sidestepped me, picking up my letter on the desk. He was silent for some moments before he turned back to me. “You want to resign?” Damien's tone was soft as he stared at me. “Why?” “I…” I swallowed, hesitating, I could vaguely see a small flash of suspicion in his eyes. He was testing me, I realized. Testing to see if I still recognized him, he probably thought I was resigning because of him. And he was right. My action of trying to resign suddenly felt like a dumb move. “I can't continue in your company any more sir,” I said, staring at him coldly. “But why?” With two wide strides, Damien appeared beside me, his presence overpowering me. “Her,”

Chapter 24Audacity DamienThe soft chime of the elevator filled the small space as it ascended but my mood had never felt lower. Elena couldn't remember me. Could she even remember anything? My mind raced with thoughts as I replayed every moment, retwisting and rethinking it through. She'd not given anything away, not even a little to suggest this was an act. What'd happened to her? I wondered, a frown etched on my face. I'd begun having suspicions since I'd kissed her in my office but now I was completely sure, maybe not completely. I'd offered her those lucrative terms just to keep her around, keep her close to me where I could continuously observe her. I shook my head to clear my thoughts as the elevator doors slid open and I strode out. “Send a memo to all the directors,” I snapped, catching Clara's attention. “I want all their reports ready by tomorrow morning, including Howard.” “Yes sir,” Clara quickly wrote down some notes on that clipboard she seemed to carry everywh

Chapter 25Clash Of InterestsDamienMy heart was pounding in my chest as I stared at Priest with a cold gaze. I couldn't believe what I'd just heard. “So you're telling me that Elena was in this car?” I nudged the picture of the wrecked car, the thought of her in the car sent chills down my spine. It was a miracle she was still alive. I thumbed through the other photos of the crash. “What happened to her after that?” I demanded, and my mood became worse by the second. “I can't say,” Priest began but he changed tack after he noticed my dark expression. “It's still unclear at this point,” he admitted. “I'm running through the records of every hospital in the vicinity of the crash for a radius of ten miles,” Priest explained. “It'll take some time, but if she was taken to any of those hospitals, I'll find out.” “Good,” I nodded curtly, pushing the photos back to him. “I want to see her hospital records when you do,” I stressed, remembering Elena's reaction when she'd seen me. Chapter 26Leap Of Faith ElenaOne step at a time, deep breaths, squared shoulders… you can do this Elena. I could, only that I couldn't believe I was really doing this. I was dressed in a black pencil gown and a white jacket, I kept my eyes down, avoiding the intense gazes I'd been receiving ever since I stepped out of the house. Was I nuts? I wondered as I walked into Harrington Enterprises and headed straight for the elevator. I couldn't believe I was doing this. I was coming back to work with Damien Landon, the man I'd been arranged to marry and had married until recently. I pressed the button for the top floor—Damien’s office, despite the growing unease I felt. I'd spent all night telling myself how and why I couldn't do this but the terms he'd offered had been enticing. Five times my current pay would be enough to comfortably take care of Lily and sort out a lot of other things. It hadn't been easy getting this job, I didn't want to lose it just like that. Not to add, I

Albert had been on a rampage since he walked in, I secretly wondered if he was really worried about Elena or our alliance now that she was gone. “She was supposed to be under your care,” Albert paced back and forth, not able to stay put. “My care?” I repeated, my eyes becoming cold. “She's not some little kid that I have to babysit and spoon-feed,” I snapped, glaring at Albert. He would do well to mind his words. Despite my seemingly calm exterior, I wasn't any less bothered than Albert, I just didn't show it. My marriage to Elena was supposed to be the icing on the cake, Father would support me and our months of uneasy standoff would be over. Just when I thought I'd had a weight lifted off my chest, this happened. “Do you have any idea where she could be?” I snapped, glancing at Albert

The house felt emptier as I strode downstairs, I hated having maids walking around the house so they usually came in when I'd left and cleaned the place before I came back. It'd been a day and I'd heard no news from Albert I thought, descending down the stairs. He hadn't sent word if he'd found Elena, I was beginning to think this was a lost cause. Maybe she didn't want to be found, I thought. I slid into the back seat and the driver drove me out of the estate and onto the main roads. Within half an hour we'd pulled up into my private parking space and minutes later I ascended my private elevator up to my office. Clara was busy with some documents when I walked in. I couldn’t help but ask. “Why, why are you doing all this?” “Buying you clothes?”“Damien, you know

I hadn’t gone all the way yet with Damien, and quite frankly I wasn’t ready too.The door creaked open, and I held my breath.A tall shirtless Damien stepped in. “You’re finally awake,” his voice came in smooth and calm, a stark contrast to how I felt on the inside. “What did you do to me?” “Where are my clothes?” I questioned annoyance etched on my face.“Whoa, whoa slow down Elena,” he said gesturing with his hands for me to calm down. “One

Relief at the sound of his words washed over me but it was short lived as Ethan’s voice came through. “Elena I know you’re in there, lunch break is going to be over soon.” We usually ate together during lunch breaks so it’s not surprising that he came looking for me. “Damien,” I whispered giving him a look that needed no explanation. “I’m coming Ethan,” I said awkwardly but loud enough to be heard outside the door. We both arranged our clothes, well mostly mine. Damien helped me, his fingers brushing against my skin wiping away the bodily fluids—the lingering traces of our intimacy. We were now both good as new for the most part. “I’ll see you later,” Damien said to only my hearing as I opened the door. It was hard to miss the surprised look on Ethan’s face. • CHASED BY TWO BILLIONAIRES    60: longing for?

Chapter: 60: longing for? Elena It’s been a few days since my make out session with Damien, I had tried avoiding him but that only made him want to get closer, and one way or the other we ended up being around each other. Whether it was in his office or mine, there was always a reason to be in the same space. Meetings, reports, last-minute approval, anything that required our interaction seemed to stretch longer than necessary. But that wasn’t all, I had found myself after work being driven home by him. I was now expecting to see his car waiting for me at the end of the day. The car rides were nothing close to a silent ride. We had talked so much, probably longer than we ever did throughout our marriage. He never asked if I needed a ride, he simply assumed I would take it. And what was worse? I let him. He felt different now. There was no denying the shift between us. I sighed, lost in thought as I turned the corner in the office hallway, barely paying attention to wh

  • CHASED BY TWO BILLIONAIRES    59: Uninvited Encounters

Chapter 59: Uninvited Encounters Elena My mornings at Harrington Enterprises were with usual routine, except for the anxiety that always came with knowing I’d have to face Damien. Still, I had chosen to suppress it, to mask it beneath professionalism and composure. Today, however, something felt…off. A strange sense of unease crawled up my spine as I got dressed for work, but I didn’t want to focus on it. I arrived at the company building, walking through the familiar glass doors, my heels clicking softly against the tiled floors. But the moment I stepped into the elevator, my chest tightened. Sophia. She stood there, looking effortlessly beautiful in a fitted white dress, her long chestnut hair cascading over her shoulders. My eyes met her blue ones, and she smiled, the kind of smile that held more meaning than it should. “Good morning, Elena,” she greeted, stepping further inside as if this was her space. I smiled back giving her a curt nod. “Sophia.” The elev

Chapter 58Undeniable TruthElena The ride home was dead silent, I didn't notice the death grip I had on the steering wheel. Damien's last words to me at the briefing kept echoing in my head, as did images of his cold detached expression when he'd walked past me. “You disappoint me.” His words pierced into me even then and I felt the knots in my belly tighten. I shouldn't think about this I thought, shaking my head but the thoughts lingered, like a weight I couldn't shake off. I felt a wave of exhaustion flood me when I finally got home, it was late already but the house lights were still on, meaning Jenna was up. I felt a pang of guilt at the thought of her having to pick Lily up from school and tuck her in after work. “Elena?” Jenna called out the moment I walked in, her voice faintly cheery. “It's me,” I said, forcing a smile. “Hey.” Jenna was busy at her laptop, her hands dancing above the keyboard as she clicked away. “What's wrong?” Jenna's sharp gaze saw

Chapter 57Overt PloyElena What was Sophie doing here? The question remained with me when I walked back to my office, unanswered questions filling my mind. I couldn't help the faint jealousy that sprang up when I'd spotted Sophia walking out of Damien's office, were they back together? I wondered, or had they always been together? Perhaps the only good thing that'd happened was Damien promising to take care of Connor, I didn't know how but I'd found myself believing him. Perhaps Connor's actions wouldn't pose much of a threat, if Damien was that confident, he probably had a reason for his confidence. I'd just turned the corner when I nearly bumped into a trolley carrying a thick pile of files and some stationeries. “Watch where you're going!” I snapped, my annoyance temporarily spilling over for a moment and I moved aside to let the trolley move past. I was stunned to see another trolley following the first, it was also loaded with some things. Someone was moving? I wondered,

He must've been daydreaming he thought, but the stinging pain in his eardrums reminded him it wasn't a dream. A scream pierced the air abruptly and despite the closed door, Luther heard it loud and clear. Oh God no! Luther's eyes widened with full-blown shock and his back was drenched in cold sweat. He didn't hesitate to lock the door immediately, his hands were badly shaking and he leaned on the wall beside the door, taking in large gulps of air. His phone suddenly buzzed, startling him and Luther picked up the call without delay. “Hello,” Luther whispered, half scared that someone might listen to him, even now his mind raced with thoughts. “That could've been you just now, Mr. Luther,” the lady's voice spoke over the line, her tone was light and breezy.“Yo—you—” Luther stuttered, words failing him. “You knew—” he trailed off, his tone incredulous.
