Chapter 28

Unforeseen Circumstances

Damien

(Flashback_six months ago)

It was barely eight am but I was already dressed and ready for work, the car was outside waiting for me.

The house felt emptier as I strode downstairs, I hated having maids walking around the house so they usually came in when I'd left and cleaned the place before I came back.

It'd been a day and I'd heard no news from Albert I thought, descending down the stairs. He hadn't sent word if he'd found Elena, I was beginning to think this was a lost cause.

Maybe she didn't want to be found, I thought.

I slid into the back seat and the driver drove me out of the estate and onto the main roads. Within half an hour we'd pulled up into my private parking space and minutes later I ascended my private elevator up to my office.

Clara was busy with some documents when I walked in.

I'd discovered her when she was only an intern, quick and sharp-witted. I'd employed her as my secretary and never regretted it, I paid he

She was still drowsy from sleep. “Hush now,” I whispered, rocking her softly in my arms. My eyes were narrowed as I stared out at the night, it was pitch black. “Damn weather!” the driver cursed under his breath, he was squinting his eyes as he leaned forward, trying to see clearly through the raindrops that streamed down the windshield. “The weather's horrible,” I said, trying to make small talk. I couldn't believe how bad our luck was, the weather had been just less than half an hour ago. I was still blank on how I was going to proceed but I knew one thing. I couldn't stay with Sarah, her words didn't hold much sway with Father and Damien. My mind flashed with the image of him entangled with Sophia, I was just a necessity. I was done doing things for anyone. The thought was like a weight lifted off my chest, I felt li

I blinked my eyes, trying to adjust my eyes to the light. Where was I? I looked up at the white ceiling, not moving. I couldn't even move if I wanted to, my entire body felt like it was weighed out of lead and my mind couldn't urge my body to move. “Administer… first dose… second… fourth…” I heard faint voices from around me but I could hardly keep my eyes open, talk more of to see who it was. A sudden wave of exhaustion crashed into me and my vision blurred as I sank into darkness again. I don't know how long I was unconscious, I drifted in and out of consciousness, never staying too long on one side. I heard faint voices of people time and time again but I couldn't say a word, I was like an onlooker, watching as events passed. Except I wasn't watching any events, just a white ceiling. I groaned as I stirred, this time sensati

Chapter 31 Missing Pieces Elena (Flashback_Six months ago) “Lily… that's your daughter's name,” the doctor's words echoed repeatedly in my head. I had a daughter? The thought felt strange in my mind yet it also felt dear to me. Lily. It felt so familiar, so warm, as if it had always been a part of me. Was she really my daughter? “Your memory loss is most likely caused by the stress and trauma induced by the accident,” the doctor stared at me steadily. “It's not unusual,” he added, adjusting his stethoscope. “ We’ll continue to monitor your condition, and make sure you're alright.” Alright? The thought felt alien to me. I'd lost my whole memory, having no recollection of who I was, the things I liked and disliked. I definitely wasn't alright. I opened my mouth, wanting to ask more questions but the door opened at that moment, drawing my attention. Two people walked in—a man and a woman. They were both young but just based on appearance I felt the woman looked cl

I nodded and we headed towards it and everyone got aboard. Lily went silent after we left the hospital, I still felt pangs of pain whenever I recalled her teary eyes as she'd sobbed about not being allowed to see me. Jenna occasionally threw glances at me but she didn't say much, content to just hum along to the song playing. Pascal too was silent, he'd put a headphone on and was transfixed with his phone. “Pascal,” Jenna nudged him and slowly ground the car to a halt. “We're here,” she nodded outside. I read the words on the signpost, ‘Subway Station’ We were taking a train ride? I wondered curiously. My curiosity didn't have to last long as Pascal pushed the door open and stepped out. “Study hard, you hear me?” Jenna called out after him. “And don't forget to call m

Forget it, I snapped at myself in self reproach. She was gone and that was it. End of story.I'd just worn my trousers when my cell phone beeped suddenly, snapping me to the present. My eyes narrowed when I saw Clara's name flashing on the screen. Clara never called me if it wasn't important, what was so important she couldn't wait for me to get to the office first? I wondered, glancing at the clock. “There's an emergency, Sir,” Clara's voice was on edge and her words instantly made my nerves tense. “What happened?” I demanded, I put the phone on speaker and sped up my dressing. “The stocks we launched just last week are plummeting, and…” Clara hesitated, “There's something you need to deal with right here.” I felt a ball of ice freeze up my insides. “I’ll be there in twe

Chapter 34The Place Where Paths DivergedDamienJane's proposal weighed on my mind all through the day, even when I was driving back home. The chance of going to manage her company wasn't a chance many would get. Harrington Enterprises had since become a renowned and well placed company in the business world. Jane had steered away from publicity so not much was known about her, she was hardly even seen. Her proposal would mean a fresh start for next but I couldn't shake off the feeling that accepting her proposal felt like I was surrendering. What would Father say? I wondered, an image of Father's stoic face appeared in my head. He'd call me a coward I thought, sighing slowly.I was absent minded when I got home, mechanically taking off my clothes and taking a shower before I changed into something more comfortable.I'd just plopped down on a couch in the living room when my cell phone rang, breaking the silence. “Hello?” I spoke slowly, my voice flat. “Hello sir,” a voice spo

Only that, it was. “You're joking right?” I whispered, still shocked at Damien's words. “Quite the contrary, I'm not,” Damien smiled but the smile didn't reach his eyes. “Me?” I finally managed, my voice barely above a whisper. The weight of the situation seemed to dawn on me afresh. “I… I thought—”“Enough, Elena,” Damien interrupted me. He glanced at his watch, “No one knows the proposal better than you. It's time,” Damien rose to his feet. My heart lurched in my chest and I squeezed my hands together as nervousness wreaked havoc in my system. ,“Calm down Elena,” Damien paused in front of me and his calm steady eyes met mine, searching. They saw me back then, but I felt like they were really seeing me now. I'd been given a new office, on Damien's orders. Till now I couldn't believe he'd made me his personal assistant for the Houston project. Easy now, Elena, I warned myself. I had to stay alert at all times, working in such close proximity with Damien was never going to be an easy thing. All this was because he still believed I'd lost my memory, one wrong move and everything would be gone.I unpacked my bag, taking out the unfinished revised proposal I'd worked on all night. Damien hadn't selected who the new members of the team would be so for now I was doing all the work. Chapter 49Worth The Risk?Elena My heart thudded erratically as I followed behind Damien and got into the car. I sure hoped I was doing the right thing, I thought, staring out the window. “It's so pretty,” Lily's eyes were bright like fireflies as she stared around at the sleek interior of the car. I didn't have any reaction, I'd expect nothing less from the CEO of a company. “Yes,” Damien smiled, his eyes reaching mine but he didn't say a word. He put the car in drive and slowly reversed, before driving out of the parking lot. I glanced at Jenna's car that I'd left parked in the corner, silently wondering how many tickets it'd accumulate by the time I was back. Damien drove on in silence, the air filled with unspoken thoughts. I silently noted his tensed expression that he'd hidden very well, something was up. “So…” I broke the silence, keeping my gaze focused straight ahead. “What’s going on?” “Not here Elena,” Damien didn't glance in my direction, his gaze also fixed ahea

Chapter 48Take A LeapElena My heart was in my stomach as I drove to Lily's school. I was driving faster now, my stomach a tangle of nerves. Damien's text had completely unnerved me, I'd texted him the address of Lily's school instead of the house. It'd be safe there I silently assured myself, thinking of the crowd that'd be around the school. My heart leaped to my throat as I pulled up into Lily's school and I parked, quickly pulling out the key and getting out of the car. I was almost fifteen minutes late, I noted, glancing at my little wristwatch. I'd just reached the top of the front stairs when the door opened and a parent walked out, child in tow. I nodded in greeting as I walked past, heading inside. The children usually sat around in the front hall as they waited for their parents. “Miss Elena?” A teacher I recognized smiled as she got to her feet but I didn't look at her, my eyes sweeping around in search of Lily. 'Where is she?’ I felt my heart sink as I glanced th

Chapter 47A Choice In The Midst Of DangerElenaThe house was quiet when I walked in and I finally heaved a sigh of relief, Lily had gone to school and finally I could have some peace. Too soon. The thought had barely registered in my mind when Jenna poked her head around the corner, her gaze searching. “You're back,” she said, smiling but I could feel the deluge of questions that hid behind her smile. I'd come back home a few days ago, Lily was over the moon and she'd literally been glued to me all day, I'd felt very guilty about it so I'd spent all my time with her, trying to make it up. “Lily says she wants to be a ballerina for Halloween,” I chuckled drily, forcing a smile. “You're still home?” I asked. Normally Jenna would've headed to work by the time I came back. “There was a small emergency yesterday,” Jenna mumbled through a mouthful of cereal she'd prepared. “So we're having the day off.” I nodded in understanding. “It's about time you spoke to me, Elena,” Jenna ke

Chapter 46A Dead EndDamienThe office was silent as I tried to focus on the documents I was going through, but my mind kept on drifting back to Elena. It'd been three days. She hadn't called or come into the office, I’d tried to tell myself that I shouldn't care. I'd wanted calling multiple times but I always chickened out at the last moment. What was I going to tell her? What should I even tell her? I was her boss, bosses didn't call employees asking when they felt like resuming work. Bosses didn't also develop feelings for their employees, a voice whispered in my head. The thought made me freeze, my hand holding the pen pausing mid-air. “Damn it!”I cursed softly under my breath and I dropped the pen with frustration. I had a lot of paperwork to clear up but the thought of Elena just wouldn't leave my mind. Despite myself I took out my cell phone and thumbed through it, my fingers pausing when I got to her contact. I stared at her contact details, feeling deeply conflicted

Chapter 45Open ThreatsThe office was dead silent when Victoria walked in, the sound of her heels echoing in the room. She had a satisfied smirk on her face seeing the looks of utter shock on the faces of the directors. They had ample reason to be shocked. Victoria had connected her system to the projector in the boardroom and she'd projected certain things, the directors had gotten the shock of their lives. There were four men in the room, they should've been more but Frank had assured her that there'd been only four directors present at the meeting. This made Victoria relieved, things were still within her control. The board had nine directors, two were loyal to her, and the other three, they answered to Michael. The four who were meeting were all leaning towards Damien, so it was obvious what they were up to. Victoria didn't dare allow things develop further, if Michael got a whiff of what was happening it could bring unexpected problems. She didn't dare push her luck. “Wh

Chapter 44Behind The MaskDamien Thud! Thud! Thud! My arms and muscles felt sore as I pounded my fists on the sandbag with venom. I wasn't a frequent regular to the gym, I kept in shape but just enough to not look like those walking bags of muscle. I didn't want to admit it, but I needed to let off some steam. Especially after my conversation with her. Elena. Her name had been on my mind all morning, I'd come to the gym with the hope an intense workout would snap her out of my thoughts. I was wrong. Even now her words from last night echoed in my head. “You married a woman you didn't love, treated her like trash...You made her leave you…You made her sign this contract…” Elena's words echoed non stop in my head, even now I could feel her deep seated pain. Pain that I'd caused. What was wrong with me? I growled under my breath, punching at the sandbag with greater frequency and vigor. I'd hurt her, oh I really had, guilt pricked at me as memories of the old Elena flowed th

Chapter 43No Loose EndsThe office was quiet and peaceful, Victoria was at her desk as she went through company reports and documents. Managing the company wasn't an easy feat but she'd put in her utmost effort in it. Father wasn't inclined to patience, especially if he noted any mistakes. And no mistakes would be made, Victoria decided, her brows clamped together and she focused on the papers with unwavering concentration.Father had given her control of the company weeks after she'd made Damien discredited. A smile crawled up her face as she recalled the incident. It'd been so easy doing Damien in, all she'd had to do was bribe a few board members, a few bad suggestions here and there, and voila! Damien had been relegated to the background by Father in a fit of rage, he'd not spoken a word to Damien for weeks. He'd eventually given Damien one of the newly acquired companies as a form of redemption. Victoria smiled again, she'd also wrecked his chance of redemption. She'd done

The big question lay before me, the problem was, I couldn't decide. I still clutched the document in my hand, my bold italic signature stood out in my gaze, a reminder of the contract I'd committed myself to so many months ago. “I'm telling you the truth Elena,” Damien stared at me. “I wouldn't lie to you, not about this.” I sighed, glancing away. Despite myself, Damien's words had the ring of Truth in them. I only wondered what he'd say if I revealed I'd never lost my memory in the first place. But even now, after all these months the memory of our last encounter before the accident lingered. I could still see the image of Damien tangled with Sophia at his office, and I could still hear his cold words in my head. “I don't remember any of it,” I whispered, meeting Damien's gaze levelly. “If I had a husband I'd remember

She looked a little annoyed as she spoke into the phone, obviously having a heated conversation. “Is there a problem?” Magaret asked, noticing Victoria had ended her phone call. “No,” Victoria shook her head, not saying more. “It's just a little issue at the company.” “Well done,” Magaret nodded, and she stared at Victoria, hints of praise filling her eyes. “You've done well, Victoria,” Magaret's voice was filled with pride. “It was so easy to dispose of Damien,” Magaret chuckled. “He didn't see it coming,” a small smile touched her lips. “It's not over Mother,” Victoria's expression didn't shift despite the praise Magaret had heaped on her.“We can't af
