Chapter 20: My Spoon

Renee and Mason went to the study to discuss matters, while Sylvia stomped her feet in relief. "Thank goodness Renee showed up. She saved my life. If my older brother knew I took you to see Renee and ran into Melissa Garcia again, he would have beaten me up."

Elaine sat on the sofa, reading a newspaper. Initially, she didn't think much of Sylvia's complaint until she heard the name Melissa Garcia. She paused slightly and closed the newspaper, then asked casually, "What's the matter with Melissa Garcia? Why can't I see her?"

"It's her," Sylvia snapped back to reality, putting a hand over her mouth and avoiding Elaine's gaze. She awkwardly smiled and said, "Isn't she Sarah Garcia's mother? I thought you might feel uncomfortable seeing her."

Elaine could tell it was an excuse, and it was a waste of her dramatic experience. Clearly, Sylvia couldn't tell the truth, and Elaine didn't want to push her. She simply responded, "It's alright. My heart is strong now. I'm not afraid of them."
