Confrontation and Conflict
Our house was just meters away from the woods, the tall sprawling woods, the pack lived here. It was all to prevent sightings of werewolves I knew. The pack was secluded, far away from humans. I stared out at the view as Rachel's voice echoed in my ears, she'd just called me. "Are you sure of this Chloe? Vincent would be furious," Rachel asked, her voice laced with worry. I took a deep breath, my hands trembling as I held the phone. "I won't back down Rachel, I'm tired of being treated like I'm trash or…or like his plaything." My voice cracked, and I wiped away a tear. "Be careful Chloe," Rachel whispered, "If something happens call me immediately okay?" I nodded, wiping my eyes. "I will." I ended the call and I stared outside quietly, waiting for Vincent's return. The sound of screeching car tires made my heart race, Vincent was back. The divorce papers felt strangely heavy in my hands, a symbol of the end of our sham marriage. The lawyer had faxed them over. My palms were sweaty and my eyes glinted with determination, this was ending today I thought. The door creaked open, and Vincent stumbled in, his eyes bloodshot, his clothes disheveled. He still wore the suit he'd worn to work yesterday, he reeked of alcohol and cheap perfume. My stomach turned at the sight Pink lipstick stains stood out on his white shirt, reminding me of his infidelity. I couldn't help the stab of pain that shot through me, a wave of disappointment crashed into me. "Well, well, well," he sneered, "Look what we have here. My weakling of a mate waiting to welcome me. How quaint." I took a deep breath, my voice steady. "Vincent, we need to talk." He chuckled, his eyes mocking me. "Oh, I think we've said enough." Vincent's eyes reddened "You're just a useless weakling, you should be thankful I chose you. You're just angry because I had a little fun last night. You know I can't be tied down." My anger boiled over but I held it in, keeping my cool. He wasn't even trying to defend himself. "You had fun? With one of your whore?" My eyes narrowed "What happened to being my mate? What happened to our vows Vincent?" I wiped my eyes, cleaning the little tears that'd escaped my guard. Vincent snorted. "Promises, promises. You know I can't keep them. You even speak about vows?" Vincent sneered, his eyes flashing with contempt "You became my mate and wife because you didn't have a better option, Chloe. All you wanted was the money, don't act like you really cared." What? My eyes widened, How could he say such a thing? "You're wrong, Vincent. I cared about you once. But now, I see you for what you are. A cheater, a liar, and a user. And I won't tolerate it anymore." Vincent's face twisted in anger, his eyes flashing with contempt. "You think you're so much better than me? You're just a weak, pathetic woman who can't even keep her mate satisfied. You're boring Chloe, even the pack abhors you. If it wasn't for me, no one would spare you a glance within this pack. Without me you're nothing!" Vincent spat. I felt a surge of adrenaline, my heart racing with fear. But I stood my ground, refusing to back down. "I may not be perfect, Vincent. But at least I'm not a cheater. And I won't be used by you." I flung the divorce papers at his face, " I reject you as my mate I'm filing for a divorce Vincent, you can have all the girls in the world. I'm done here, I'll be taking Mackenzie with me." I turned to walk away but Vincent grasped my hand, his face darkened with anger "You think it's that easy? That I'll let you get a divorce how and when you want it? You gold-digging whore! All you've ever been after is my money." I struggled to free myself, my heart raced. "I could care less about your money Vincent, you're pathetic, I can't believe I fell in love with you. I want a divorce." I summoned courage, staring back at Vincent. Vincent's eyes narrowed, and he shouted "And who told you you can simply do whatever you want? You're mine Chloe, MINE!" Vincent roared, his hands grasping for my clothes. One of his hands tugged at my hair, making me gasp in pain. His other hand went down between my thighs. My expression changed, I shook in fear, I pushed him away, my voice was shaky. "No, Vincent, what are you trying to do? Stop!" I struggled intensely in his grasp. But he was too strong, too angry. He slapped me, his hand stinging my cheek. I felt a wave of pain. Tears streamed from my eyes. As I stared at Vincent my gaze gradually changed to that of disgust. I hated this man, I just realized I was mated to a demon, I hated my mate, Why couldn't my mate understand me, WHY? I sobbed, my sight blurred with tears. My consciousness became hazy and darkness crept up on me. Vincent's face stopped inches away from mine, his alcohol-laced breath made my stomach turn. "Don't you dare think of getting a divorce, you're my property, my plaything. I decide when I'm done with you understand?" Vincent whispered roughly as his hands groped my body, his eyes shone with lust. A chill crawled up my spine, "Vincent, stop please, I beg of you." My eyes welled up in tears. "Please," I sobbed, powerless to stop him, he'd pinned me down completely. The sound of tearing fabric filled the room, Vincent tore my clothes apart, his drunken eyes glowed fervently at me. A gush of air hit my inner thighs, I cried out and slowly closed my eyes, resigned to my fate. My heart ached with the thought of what was to follow. I don't want to be raped by my mate, I can't deal with the pain that comes after this, why is he forcing me , he's supposed to be my mate”. "Remember what I told you, Chloe?" Vincent whispered, "Never dare go against me." Vincent's hand held my face roughly, he prepared to thrust. "Vincent, stop it! What's going on here?" A loud voice thundered, making Vincent stop his actions. Vincent's eyes looked like he'd seen a ghost. "Mar–Mark?" He stuttered. "It's… It's been ten years." Mark's face darkened, he glared at Vincent, "Ten years and the first thing I come home to see is you trying to force yourself on Chloe." Mark's eyes glowed murderously. "Know your place, Mark!" Vincent snapped, and he glared at Mark. I lay, beneath Vincent, my breath caught in my throat as they locked eyes with each other.A Shocking ReunionAs I drove down the familiar dirt road, a wave of nostalgia washed over me. It's been six years since I left the pack, I thought. Waves of memories came flooding back as I drove on, the pack hadn't changed much since I'd left, there were a lot more houses than I remembered.I saw a few familiar faces in the distance but I ignored them, there would be time for reunions later. I wanted to see Vincent."Are you sure it's not Chloe you really want to see?" A voice echoed in my head,my face flushed and my breathing quickened. It had been years since I saw her but her blue eyes were etched in my memory. As I got out of the car I heard strange noises from inside and my hair stood on end - something was wrong. I rushed to the house and what I saw made my blood run cold. I stood frozen in the doorway, my eyes fixed on the scene before me. My brother, Vincent, was forcing himself onto his wife, Chloe. The same Chloe I had secretly loved for years, but never had the
A Fresh StartI packed a small suitcase with only the essentials, my hands shaking with fear and anger. I couldn't believe Vincent had tried to rape me, and I knew I had to escape before he tried again. I grabbed Mackenzie's hand, her eyes wide with confusion."Mommy, where are we going?" she asked, her voice trembling."We're going to Rachel's, sweetie," I replied, trying to sound calm. "We'll be safe there."Mackenzie looked on the verge of tears, but she simply nodded, not asking any more questions. I breathed a sigh of relief, thankful that Vincent wasn't home. I couldn't imagine how he would react if I tried to leave while he was here.As we left the house, I felt a mix of emotions: relief, fear, and anxiety. I had no idea how I would provide for Mackenzie, but I knew I couldn't stay with Vincent any longer."But Mummy," Mackenzie pulled my hand, "Aren't we taking Brownies?"I forced a smile, "Not now Mackenzie, we'll come back for her later okay?"She nodded, her expression look
The UltimatumAs I stepped into Mark's office, my heart raced with anxiety. Mark's piercing gaze scrutinized me, making me squirm in my seat. His eyes seemed to bore into my soul, as if searching for secrets I didn't want to reveal."So, Chloe, tell me, why do you need this job so desperately?" Mark's deep voice was firm and businesslike.I hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. My mind raced with thoughts of Vincent, my ex-husband, and the mess I'd left behind. I saw something flash in Mark's eyes, a glimmer of understanding perhaps, or a hint of empathy."It's...To be honest, Mark, I'm in a difficult situation," I began, my voice barely above a whisper. "I need this job to support myself." I swallowed hard, the words sticking in my throat. I hated that I had to be desperate in this way and to him of all people, but I had no choice.Mark raised an eyebrow, his expression skeptical. "Vincent, can provide for you. He runs the biggest company in the city. Why do you need to work?" I too
My chest rose and fell rapidly as I breathed, the tension in the office felt like an unexpected weight pressing down on me. Mark's words left me stunned; he wanted me. He'd said it firmly, leaving no room for rebuttal. "I…" my tongue tangled in knots, "I need time to think about this," I said and my voice trembled, I didn't dare raise my head to meet Mark's gaze. "Whatever you say," Mark said with a dismissive wave of his hand, looking confident. "I expect an answer by tomorrow," Mark said, his eyes gleaming with a knowing glint as his eyes swept over me and I could even feel a trace of want. My face flushed under his stare."Yes," I nodded and I got to my feet, "I'll be leaving, thank you." I turned around immediately to leave. "Wait," Mark said, stopping me just as I was about to open the door, he smiled as he got to his feet. "I'll see you off." My heart raced and I tried to maintain a neutral expression as he approached me, "You don't have to, Mark." "Sure I do," Mark shrugged
My eyes fluttered open as I came to, a gasp escaped my lips as a sharp pain shot through me. The pain wiped away my grogginess and I opened my eyes, I furrowed my brows as I looked around, wondering where I was.Memories of what had happened in the forest flooded my mind, and my heart beat erratically, Vincent had lost it. How could he do that… another sharp pain shot through me, cutting off my thoughts. I could barely stifle a groan. I slowly sat up, looking around cautiously.I was in a room, the curtains had been drawn and the room was dimly lit. My head throbbed as I got out of bed, my eyes widened as I saw my clothes; all I was wearing was a big shirt over my underwear. Who had changed me into these clothes?
It was surreal watching Mark interact with Mackenzie. My thoughts wandered as I stared at them, my mind in a daze—Mark, with his usual calm and composed demeanor, his eyes that stared at Mackenzie held an emotion I couldn't quite place. They were sitting on the floor in the living room, surrounded by a sea of colorful blocks that Mackenzie had scattered across the carpet. I had no idea where Mark had brought them from, after a quick sip of water they'd come here straight from outside. I'd just finished cleaning up.“Do you think the princess would like a tower this tall?” Mark chuckled, holding up a toy block to the tower they were building.Mackenzie giggled, “No, it needs to be taller!” she insisted, her little hands reaching for more blocks.
The chirping of the birds woke me up, a yawn escaping my lips as I stretched, savoring the quiet morning. But the calm was quickly replaced by a jolt of anxiety when I noticed the empty spot beside me where Mackenzie should have been. Where was she? My heart skipped a beat as I glanced around, suddenly alert.I pushed the sheets away and hurried out of bed, the lingering sleepiness vanishing as concern took over. Descending the stairs, I strained to hear any sounds. Relief washed over me as I approached the kitchen and spotted Mackenzie, her small figure standing by the counter.“You scared me, Mackenzie,” I sighed, wrapping my arms around her and leaning down to place a gentle kiss on her forehead. “What are you doing down here so early?” I glanced around the kitchen, surprised that Mark w
The company building loomed in front of me as I pulled into the parking lot. My heart pounded in my chest as I stared at it, muttering a silent prayer before stepping out of the car. Rachel had lent me her car to get to work, but even in the borrowed black suit I felt stiff and out of place. My palms were sweaty as I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself before heading inside. The receptionist’s eyes widened slightly as she spotted me. “Good morning, Miss Chloe,” she greeted warmly, her tone respectful.I nodded, trying to keep my voice steady. “I’m here to see…” I began, but she interrupted.&ldqu
MARKThe pure undiluted rage pumping through my veins seemed to overflow and fill my senses. All I could see was red and I was going to make sure Ronald felt that rage.I pounced on him and he braced himself in response as we crashed into the marble table in the center of the room reducing it to a million tiny pieces.Ronald seemed to recover first and made to swipe at my face with bared claws and a maniacal grin on his face. But Pascal intervened, grabbed him from behind, and threw into the wall with sufficient force that made Ronald-shaped cracks in it. Pascal stretched his arm out to help me up which I took. I looked at him a bit quizzically. All the time I’ve known him I had never seen him intervene physically in any conflict in the pack or even in his family apart from the training he gave me and Vincent. The fact he was fighting with me now, especially against someone who actually shared a blood relationship with him made me feel a type of way that was difficu
FANGROOTMARKI sat there and simply processed what I’d been told. Christian Packard had allowed himself to get caught because he would rather we catch him than go back to Ronald’s clutches. Ronald Dennison, the new thorn at my side. He was powerful, undoubtedly so. Testament to his ability was his seamless invasion into my home. Now I know how. Wolves have always been social creatures, from the wolves in the wild to the more advanced kind, we have always been social creatures, and we’ve depended on our senses. A werewolf has a heightened sense of smell and hearing, impeccable vision, and most of all, what we rely on is our ability to sense our immediate environment, the energy around us, and the general life force. But there was a werewolf who could manipulate al
FANGROOT CHLOEAlone. Unaided, that’s how he did it. Ronald had successfully invaded my home and showed me what we all knew now. That we were completely at his mercy. I didn’t know it at the time, but Mark had half a dozen werewolves watching over us when he left the house. He had two monitors outside the gates, another two on the grounds of our property, and two more on patrol. Yet not even one of them smelled his entry, much less saw him enter. He sat in my chair and threatened to end everything I cared about in the world and we don’t even know how. Logically it was almost impossible to avoid the senses of six well developed werewolves on guard. Avoiding just one werewolf’s senses was lucky, avoiding two was considered divine luck. Avoiding three, now that would require divine luck and help from others. Avoiding Six was Ronald. And no one else. I knew Dennisons. I know the feeling of having your existence be threatened by one of them.Mark had left the house ye
MarkThe unusual blend of dread and determination in my wife’s eyes was something I’d never seen before and it made my heart sink. I felt a bit of fear too but the rage mostly overshadowed it.Ronald had managed to get into my house despite the couple of wolves I had put on guard duty to watch my family. What was worse was that he also managed to get Mackenzie to ingest something and neither I nor Chloe knew exactly what it was. We were again at the mercy of one of Vincent’s goons. I could only imagine how distraught that made Chloe feel. The children were asleep now but she refused to take her eyes off them. She sat in their room and watched them as they slept. I, on the other hand, had to figure something out. I can’t sit on my hands while my family remains at Ronald’s mercy. I was so consumed by rage so much that I wanted to go to the Caldor lands myself and rip his head off with my teeth, consequences be damned. Besides I was only raised with the Dennison family
CHLOEMark had gone to meet with his uncle and once again I was left at home with the kids. Mackenzie and Victor were my joy and reasons for living, but It was hard. It always was, sitting and waiting for the men in my life to cause problems and to solve problems, with me, left at home to wonder if they are alright and if we are going to be fine. Ever since Mark left I haven’t been able to take my eyes off my daughter. Always shadowed her, especially when she played with Victor. I hated to think that my daughter could be a danger to my son and herself, the little girl didn’t deserve to be burdened as such if only I had been there to protect her and keep her safe as a good mother should. The teardrops came running along down my face. “Now, Chloe. That just wouldn’t do.”I froze dead in my tracks at the familiar yet unfamiliar voice that invaded the air around me.“Hello, Chloe. I see you standing there doing what you do best. Nothing.”Ronald was sitting in
MARKI could hear Mackenzie’s blissful chatter as she told little Victor stories of how she beat me in a race. All I could think of was going straight to Caldor and detaching Ronald’s head from his shoulders. I didn’t mind stepping over his body to get the Crane Lilies, the only plant known to succeed in reversing the effects of fangroot. “You can’t go alone, Mark. Let me come with you. At least let someone else come with you, Pascal, or anybody Goddamnit!”She yelled now. Causing me to pause in my actions and regard her calmly. My phone rang with urgency as I made to silence it. I looked at the screen and saw it was my uncle calling.Speak of the devil.“Now’s not a good time, uncle. I’m in the middle of something.” I said coldly to my uncle. “This can’t wait. And if you wanna save Mackenzie from the Fangroot that has invaded her body for a year, you’ll get yourself to the Dennison manor and we’ll go on a little drive together.” My uncle finished with
CHLOEIt was the weekend, and as promised, Mark and I decided to begin Mackenzie’s trails. She was to take the first step on the trail today with Mark and me around to guide her through. “I’m ready mummy. This is like when Aunt Sally gave me a tour of the woods at the other house. Uncle Mark raced me!”Mark laughed a laugh that only came out when he played with Mackenzie. A breathless laughter that always sounded unintentional, as though the child in him came out despite his best efforts. It never failed to warm my heart, seeing him be a father to her in a way Vincent never was. “Slow down little wolf.”Mark said, still laughing.“We’ll race alright, but first I have to tell you something. Something about our family and other families who live in Drewsy.”Mackenzie was jumping at this bit already. She’d always liked it when Mark called her his little wolf. But now she was eager to run and Mark wanted to talk. She was beside herself with excitement as sh
MARKChloe was asleep beside me as the affairs of the day played out in my mind. I calmly told my wife that it was all fine and that there was nothing to worry about. If only that was the case. The look on Chloe’s face right before she went to get dinner ready was the scariest I’d ever seen her. Because she meant every word she had said. Chloe and I had been through a lot. Had a lot taken from us, so it was no surprise she was willing to crack heads and spill the blood of whoever was going to try to take the happiness we’ve found together, away from us. I would seek divine retribution for anyone who hurts my family…The fear of losing them loomed bigger than anything I’d ever faced. So I unconsciously said a prayer: Oh God I’m sorry. Please don’t take these beautiful things that I got.Chloe stirred at my side and snuggled up to me. I held her closer as my thoughts ran miles a minute with my fears.I took up my phone and called the only person I thought I could trust. The Pack elders
CHLOE“Wolves are social creatures, they move in families called Packs. And when the moon is full, they howl at the moon.”I could hear Mackenzie’s voice over the sound of the radio as she told her little brother stories about animals. She seemed to have a new obsession with wolves, I’d like to think that was a coincidence. The Drewsy Pack usually kept all information about their true nature from their children till the children turned 10 years of age. The change could be too much for the young wolf to bear. It usually ended up in a catastrophe, traumatizing the child and even causing self-alienation from the Pack.“Mummy, can we please get some Ice cream, please? You promised.”I'd been waiting for her to say that Mackenzie could forget her backpack in the house and settle into the car all ready for school, but she never forgot an ice cream promise.“Of course, baby girl.”I said with laughter in my voice at the pleading look on Mackenzie’s face. She started
