“Claire!” I exclaimed as Liam closed his strong fingers around my wrist and another arm around my stomach.
I protested and screamed, but Liam still held me in his rock grasp.
“Liam! I have to get in there! Claire is still there and I need to find her! Please!” I pleaded with Liam, who still hadn’t moved.
“Elana, the firemen will get her. It’s their job. Leave it. Maybe she’s already out, but you just haven’t seen her yet.”
“No! You don’t get it! If I don’t help her, she’s going to die! I had a dream about this!”
I turned back to face Liam and I saw his face twist in confusion until it turned into understanding.
He seemed uncertain now and glanced anxiously from the school to me. After what seemed like forever, he made up his mind. “Okay, but I’m going with you. I don’t want you to get hurt in there. If anything goes wrong, we will leave, okay?”
I nodded and he let me from his grasp.
I knew that something was going to go wrong. Heck, everything is going to go wrong. I couldn’t leave when it happened, either, and there was no way I was going to let Liam go in there and get himself hurt.
There was only one solution.
“Sorry”. Liam’s face flashed in confusion until I brought my fist to his temple, striking a pressure point.
I whispered another apology and ran over to where the blazing school was.
I sprinted into the on-going traffic and hazardously dodged cars and people on the way. I could hear the fire sirens in the background and picked up my pace to beat them into the building.
I knew there was no way they would let me in if they had a chance.
I reached the front doors as fire exploded through them. The heat smashed into my face and I stumbled back to catch my concentration.
I caught my train of thought and barged through the holes in the doors circled with black from the fire.
I felt the flames licking my legs and feet as I stumbled down the hallway and black, thick, oily smoke invaded my lungs, scratching them and making me choke. The distance to the cafeteria seemed much larger with flames reaching out to me from everywhere.
I found it ironic that I wished many times for the school to burn down, and now it was happening, all I wanted was for it to stop.
Claire was where she was in my dream, so I didn’t have to search too hard to find her. She was still smack in the middle of the cafeteria, unmoving. I tried to reach her as some building terrain smashed in front of me to block my path.
This did not happen in my dream until later.
I tried screaming her name, but she was still in shock. I knew any second the firemen would come in and get me, but if they wouldn’t get to Claire in time, she would be gone.
I took a step towards the cafeteria where Claire was when a board from the wall collapsed.
I moved quickly to try to dodge it, but while lunging out of the board’s way, it landed on my calf and knocked me down to the ground. I felt what fire was on it burn through my jeans, but the flames never reached my leg.
I tried to squirm from under the board, but it just seemed to get heavier. I tried to draw in a breath so I could try to push the board, but I just inhaled smoke and ended up in a coughing fit.
“Help! Please, help!” I struggled to scream, but there was nobody around. Mustering all the strength I had left, I twisted my body uncomfortably to push the board off my leg.
Strangely, when I saw the board, it was still flaming uncontrollably.
The flames never even heated my leg.
While I tried to comprehend the phenomenon, a man appeared. I let out a sigh of relief at seeing my brother come to help me, but then a shot of fear trickled down my spine at the realization that Liam had come after me somehow.
“Hold on!” He yelled at me in a deep voice.
That's not Liam...
He appeared to me in the matter of a few minutes and immediately went to work on the board over me. His eyes urgently searched for a spot that wasn't covered in flames, and when he discovered it, his hands shot out to lift it.
It’s either I was really weak or I was hallucinating, but he lifted it off of me in the matter of seconds and threw it to the side with ease.
“Can you walk?” He asked me.
I tried not to gawk at what happened too much and attempted to get to my feet.
I put weight on my leg, but between the feeling of somebody squeezing my muscle and a thousand needles in my calf, I resented and gave up. I sat back down and glanced up at muscle man in panic.
Before I could say anything, he was carrying me effortlessly through the burning building. Debris smashed down in front of us several times, but it was as though the man knew it was going to happen and always dodged it.
We were almost out the side door of the school when I remembered why I was there in the first place.
I started to squirm in the man’s grasp, but his arms on my back and legs were like stone. He shot me a stern look and after my shock faded off, I returned one as well.
“Claire’s in there! That’s why I came back in! We have to go find her!”
He was still glaring at me when he replied, “We already have the other girl.”
I gave him a quizzical glare before resting in his arms again and he opened the door. I felt a cool breeze splash across my face as the air settled in around us.
The fresh air sent me into another coughing fit that I couldn’t control. Still firmly in his grasp, the man darted towards the woods where, I assumed, Claire was.
I heard the wailing of the sirens and yelling coming from other men around it. I didn’t try to turn around. The only thing on my mind right now was whether my best friend was alright or not.
We entered the forest’s line and I felt at ease, the fire far behind us.
The young man ran with me in his arms for a long time, until we made it to a dead patch in the forest.
He slowed his pace as we made it to the center of the clearing. I glanced around, expecting to see Claire there, but I couldn’t find her. The young man strolled over to a log in the center and propped me up against it.
I glanced up at him and, for the first time, got a good look at my rescuer. He had a large, heavy build surrounded in tight muscles. He had deep brown eyes that almost looked black and dark brown hair.
He was very virile—at least 6 feet 5 inches tall. His whole appearance screamed intimidating.
Yet, something about him seemed so familiar. His gorgeous face hiding that mystery.
I snapped out of my trance when somebody shook my shoulder. I focused my attention on the guy shaking me. It was another young man—probably a year older than the one that carried me here. He had a medium build with sky blue eyes and sandy blonde hair.
Embarrassed that I was caught gawking at my rescuer, I felt my cheeks heat up and I looked at my leg instead.
The blonde guy followed my gaze to my leg and scoot down to inspect it. He looked at it for a minute before placing both hands on my wound and I winced in pain from his contact. He sat there with both hands on my leg for a second before looking at me in wonder.
“She’s a foreseer,” he whispered.
Another boy with a large build, dark skin, and dark brown hair and eyes stepped forward and crouched on the other side of me. “Are you sure?”“I—I can’t heal her.” The blonde responded.Okay… maybe that fire did more damage than I thought… did he just say he couldn’t heal me? So, I’m a foreseer?I felt the pain in my leg pick up and I grabbed for it.The pain spread up my thigh and I squeezed above my injury to stop the blood flow and slow the pain so it was bearable, but the blonde slappe
The intimidating guy that scared me to death was the first person to talk, “We, all of us, are in the Night Shade Pack—a Shape Shifter Pack.”I couldn’t help but have a laugh escape my lips, and once that one shot through, I couldn’t control the flows of laughter after it.I glanced up to expect everyone else laughing at the joke, but there were only stone angry faces staring back at me.My laughing came to an immediate stop and I looked back at each of them,“Wait—you’re serious.” I said, half in amusement.
Nathan had changed back into his wolf form so he could get us out of the forest quicker.Even as a wolf he was beautiful. He had slick, jet black fur covering his entire body.He jerked his chin to his back, and I guessed he wanted me to get on in a similar manner that Claire got onto the other wolf. His pelt was soft to the touch, and I could feel the hard muscles under his thick coat.Maybe all wolves are really big and I just don't know because I never met one, but I barley made it onto his back.I clung to his thick fur as he sped up in every step. His radiating w
I must have slept for quite a while after our tense talk, because the next time I opened my eyes, we were already on a windy road up the mountain. However, I was more uncomfortable than when I fell asleep. I looked down to find myself lying on an old torn quilted seat. Confused, I sat up and noticed I was in the back seat of an old pickup truck.“Finally. I thought you would never wake up,” Nathan startled me.He must have heard me rustling around.I glanced to the driver’s seat to look at him and noticed it was dark outside. The nearly-full moon acc
Just as I thought he might shoot, Nathan's shoulders relaxed and he pointed the gun to the floor, un-latching the top, and shoved the gun back down the backside of his sweats.“What the heck, Hyene? You know there's a front door!”The door swung open even more as Hyene came out, her perfect profile coming next to mine. The gorgeous girl from the forest stood tall before me. Her caramel skin seemed to glow even more and her dark hair swayed down to her mid-back.“Sorry. Stephan wanted me to come here and help out the new girl. Said to help her into Cl
“Then who was it?”Without another word, Nathan stormed out of my room, coming back a few seconds later with his phone clenched in his enormous hand so hard, I thought it might break. My body was visibly shaking, but he either didn't notice or didn't care, because he was talking on the phone, almost yelling. I didn't even try to pay attention to the words he was shouting into the phone. The door swung open and a familiar gorgeous body sauntered in.“What on earth are you two doing in here? I can't sleep with all this racket,” Hyene sleepily dro
An awkward silence rang through the room.“Who never told me what?”If even possible, the silence seemed to thicken.“Where is your mother?”“Excuse me?”Nathan gave another low grumble, but this time I heard the warning he gave his leader, “Don't.”He ignored him again. “Your mother. Where is she?”
I smiled softly back and stood, only to remember I lost my flip-flops while running out here.“Umm, I kinda...”I didn't need to finish my sentence before Hyene grabbed a pair of tennis shoes from behind the rocks with some socks in the heels and thrust them in my direction.“How—” she cut me off.“My ability is mind reading. It's how I knew where you were and what you needed.”My mind spun.
Thank you so much for reading "Broken Nightmare"! The second book will be out in about April of 2021 and I can't wait to share it with you. Here is a sneak-peek so you can take a look!Chapter 1 I woke slowly with my head pounding, feeling very disoriented. It was pitch black in my room as I opened my eyes. I reached over to turn my bedroom lamp on, but felt nothing. Where was my lamp? And then it all came back flooding to me. Liam kidnapped. Claire and the pack missing. The imprint. I abruptly sat up. Now where was I?
My mind was jerked awake, but my body refused to stir. All I wanted to do was sleep for the next, like, forever. The hard mattress under my back made me realize something was wrong. My bed back at the house felt like clouds, not a rock. I slowly peeled my eyes open, squinting at the bright light that burned my iris.An old, dusty quilt was laid heavily across my body. It looked like I was in some cheap hotel, but nothing around me gave me confirmation of where I was. Not even the windows, which were covered by heavy curtains.Another frightful thought raced through my head. How did I get here? I thought back to the woods. The last thi
I lifted my head to the accusation. In an instant, the film over my mind fell away and reality dawned on me. All? A small group of men emerged from the shadows, all in dark suits. I almost mistook one of the men for Junto, but then corrected myself immediately. This man looked a lot more angry than I believed Junto could ever be. There was a shorter man next to him, his skin so white it glowed in the moonlight. His aged face looked wrinkled and his head was starting to bald from age. Behind them, there was a small group of about five people, but I still felt outnumbered.I felt my body tremble and hugged myself; I feeling more unsure of myself than ever. I averted my eyes, feeling guilty. They already know, I told myself. I stared at the ground, trying to make some of that guilt go away, but instead a s
I wish I could listen. I wish I could turn around and run, never looking back. I wish I could leave Nathan behind and book it out of here as fast as I could. I wish I could listen to my brother's council and just leave. But I can't.The smoke had started to thin as Johnathan's silhouette disappeared. “Wait, no!” I cried. My aching feet propelled me forward and I stumbled through the dead grass. My feet still burned from the left-over heat forcing its way into my cuts. The smoke thinned more and more as I kept hobbling into the empty night. “Wait! Come back!” I called to his destitute presence. He's not coming back,
By now, Nathan is inches from the vampire, looking at something behind me as if his life depended on it. I turned to see Liam dragging me towards the rest of the pack, all of them changed into wolves just as Nathan is. The deadly intent was only coming from Nathan, but the others had a protective stance.Dimitri looked angry as he glanced between the pack, Nathan, and me. Although Liam wasn't a supernatural like the others, he still held his ground and shoved me behind him. “Well, it looks like my job got a bit harder.”Dimitri lunged at us, but Claire intercepted him, snapping at his leg. He moved in a flash, grabbing Claire's exposed neck and threw her across the forest, colliding hard with a solid pine tree. The long root
I had a hard time focusing. I couldn’t see. I felt detached from my own body, as if I was nothing but an observer. My body lay limp on a rocky outcropping. Pine and fir trees huddled around the rocks I lay on. A thick blanket of snow covered the ground and accented the sharp lines of the rocks. Beyond that, a mirage of rocks and trees are displayed before me, white sprinkled around them. What's happening? Why am I here?A cold wind whipped through the woods and sliced through the branches like icy knives. I couldn’t feel the cold. I was numb, dulled, trapped in my own body.
Unbelievable sparks explode from my mouth as his lips make contact with mine. The whole world around me is tuned out as I solely focus on his kiss. I move my numb hands from my side and to the base of his head. I find his hair, pulling at it and undoing all the work he put into making it look nice. He moves his lips against mine and my toes curl as another set of fireworks set off every part of my body.Nathan pulls back slightly and fear invades my mind. What if he pulls away? I pull my arms tighter around his neck and kiss him back, my entire body on fire from the uncontrollable lightning spreading through my body. Our lips move perfectly together, as if they were made for each other.A low moan escapes from my lips as Nathan
Only an hour had passed by, but my feet were killing me and I was tired of putting on a fake smile.I was now standing in a small circle surrounded by three other couples. They were the future Alphas of their own pack, but they seemed to be only slightly older than Nathan. Ben and Krista were the next for the Blackmoor Shade Pack, John and Angela next in line for the South Shade Pack, and Daemon and Liz inherit the Thornton Shade pack. They were all engaged in some talk about the packs. I realized I knew almost nothing of their way of life. Although Shifters go to these events to find their future mate, an Alpha just has to be eighteen in order to imprint. Not only that, but the Alpha and Luna—male and female leader of the pack&md
Claire may have given me a variety of questions to answer, but I didn't want to reply to any of them. They're not getting worse because I'm improving my skills, but because my lifestyle has changed tremendously, and not in the best way, apparently.Claire sensed I didn't want to talk about it. She let out a long, drawn-out sigh and her tense shoulders slumped against the seat like she was exhausted. “Are you okay to go into the party? I can take you back to the house if you would like.” Hyene asked, her cell phone still pressed against her ear tightly.I thought about the tempting offer. It was safe there, and that was something I needed to feel right now. I could go and write it down to help myself forget about this nightma
