Another boy with a large build, dark skin, and dark brown hair and eyes stepped forward and crouched on the other side of me. “Are you sure?”
“I—I can’t heal her.” The blonde responded.
Okay… maybe that fire did more damage than I thought… did he just say he couldn’t heal me? So, I’m a foreseer?
I felt the pain in my leg pick up and I grabbed for it.
The pain spread up my thigh and I squeezed above my injury to stop the blood flow and slow the pain so it was bearable, but the blonde slapped my hands away before the action could take effect. I felt lightheaded and my vision started to splotch with black from the blood loss.
My vision returned and I noticed the dark-haired boy that saved me was behind everyone else with his arms folded over his chest.
He had on a black shirt that was tight on the top, but got looser closer at his hips because of his amazing figure. He had on a pair of straight jeans that stretched down to his ankles, despite the desert heat outside.
I tried to tear my gaze from him, but he was so beautiful, I just couldn't. He turned his attention from the boys next to me and caught my eye. I quickly turned away, not wanting him to catch me staring at him again.
I looked to my left and saw that the boy with the brown eyes was closer to me and his lips were moving. I instantly felt bad that I wasn’t paying attention.
“What?”
He sighed and started speaking in a soothing voice, “You have to allow us in. we can’t fix your wound until you open your mind to us.”
“What? Are you crazy? Just get the paramedics. They can take care of this.”
“No, we can’t. Trust me, okay? Just, open your mind.”
“Trust you? Why? I just met you!” I screamed. “For all I know, you could be a mass murderer or—”
“Just do it!” The dark haired boy who saved me commanded from the back.
His outburst caught me off-guard and I figured if he saved me, he wouldn’t just kill me now, right? I closed my eyes and waited for further instructions.
“Now,” the light blue eyed boy started, “find your boundaries. In your mind, find the outside walls.”
I listened to what he said and seared through everything in my mind until I found the wall surrounding all my thoughts.
This might have been the strangest thing that had ever happened in my life, but for some reason, something told me this was right.
I nodded and he continued, “Now, go along that wall until you find a door or gate. No matter what, do not leave the wall, alright?”
I walked along the wall of my mind and kept walking until I touched something cold and metal. A handle.
I nodded and the boy continued, “Alright. Open the door. Once you open it, run away from the wall and the door and don’t turn back. Don’t leave too far from the door, but run far enough until you are a safe distance away.”
I pushed down on the door lever and started to turn to run when a blue light started swirling around and coming closer to me from the midnight black.
I stepped in front of the door and squinted to try to see better. The blue light was floating softly to where the door was and I stepped closer to try to find out what it was. The pattern of the soft waves of blue sent me into a trance and I couldn’t move my head or legs.
I found myself inching towards the edge of the door—where the cliff of my mind was. The blue swirls were picking up speed now and racing towards the doors. The swirls turned into a deep sea blue as it approached my wall.
I realized the waves were getting too close and turned to run like instructed. I started to bolt from the wall, but it was already too late. I was washed with the waves.
I felt my lungs collapse from lack of air and split my eyes open. I jolted from the log I was resting against and leaned forward, taking in as much air as I could.
For a moment, all I could do was sit there and pant. I had never been into meditation or yoga or anything that could explain what happened. It felt so real in the moment that it was hard to believe it was all in my mind.
Confused now more than ever, I decided it was time to demand answers about what happened.
When I glanced up, my words were lost to find even more people surrounding me. The dark-haired boy that saved me from the fire was the first—sitting at my feet. To his right, there was another girl.
She was stunning. She had rich caramel skin and light brown eyes. Her dark hair complimented her high cheekbones and she had flawless skin.
Across from her, there was another man. This one was much older than the others. He had a tight jaw and hard face settled in behind cold dark eyes, but still a full head of hair, graying at the temples.
I didn’t look at him long because, to be honest, he scared me. I looked next to him to the last guest, who was holding my hand.
“Claire!” I breathed in relief and threw my arms around her neck. She laughed and returned my affection by cupping my shoulders with her hands in a tight hug.
I only held her for a few moments before releasing her from my death grip. I glanced around at the rest of the group and noticed there was somebody else I didn’t know that joined the huddle around me.
“What’s going on? Are you okay?” I asked Claire.
Claire’s joyful facial expression dropped as it was replaced by a wall of seriousness. “We need to talk.” She declared, looking to the rest of this little group to actually do the talking.
-
The intimidating guy that scared me to death was the first person to talk, “We, all of us, are in the Night Shade Pack—a Shape Shifter Pack.”I couldn’t help but have a laugh escape my lips, and once that one shot through, I couldn’t control the flows of laughter after it.I glanced up to expect everyone else laughing at the joke, but there were only stone angry faces staring back at me.My laughing came to an immediate stop and I looked back at each of them,“Wait—you’re serious.” I said, half in amusement.
Nathan had changed back into his wolf form so he could get us out of the forest quicker.Even as a wolf he was beautiful. He had slick, jet black fur covering his entire body.He jerked his chin to his back, and I guessed he wanted me to get on in a similar manner that Claire got onto the other wolf. His pelt was soft to the touch, and I could feel the hard muscles under his thick coat.Maybe all wolves are really big and I just don't know because I never met one, but I barley made it onto his back.I clung to his thick fur as he sped up in every step. His radiating w
I must have slept for quite a while after our tense talk, because the next time I opened my eyes, we were already on a windy road up the mountain. However, I was more uncomfortable than when I fell asleep. I looked down to find myself lying on an old torn quilted seat. Confused, I sat up and noticed I was in the back seat of an old pickup truck.“Finally. I thought you would never wake up,” Nathan startled me.He must have heard me rustling around.I glanced to the driver’s seat to look at him and noticed it was dark outside. The nearly-full moon acc
Just as I thought he might shoot, Nathan's shoulders relaxed and he pointed the gun to the floor, un-latching the top, and shoved the gun back down the backside of his sweats.“What the heck, Hyene? You know there's a front door!”The door swung open even more as Hyene came out, her perfect profile coming next to mine. The gorgeous girl from the forest stood tall before me. Her caramel skin seemed to glow even more and her dark hair swayed down to her mid-back.“Sorry. Stephan wanted me to come here and help out the new girl. Said to help her into Cl
“Then who was it?”Without another word, Nathan stormed out of my room, coming back a few seconds later with his phone clenched in his enormous hand so hard, I thought it might break. My body was visibly shaking, but he either didn't notice or didn't care, because he was talking on the phone, almost yelling. I didn't even try to pay attention to the words he was shouting into the phone. The door swung open and a familiar gorgeous body sauntered in.“What on earth are you two doing in here? I can't sleep with all this racket,” Hyene sleepily dro
An awkward silence rang through the room.“Who never told me what?”If even possible, the silence seemed to thicken.“Where is your mother?”“Excuse me?”Nathan gave another low grumble, but this time I heard the warning he gave his leader, “Don't.”He ignored him again. “Your mother. Where is she?”
I smiled softly back and stood, only to remember I lost my flip-flops while running out here.“Umm, I kinda...”I didn't need to finish my sentence before Hyene grabbed a pair of tennis shoes from behind the rocks with some socks in the heels and thrust them in my direction.“How—” she cut me off.“My ability is mind reading. It's how I knew where you were and what you needed.”My mind spun.
After all the introductions were through, Stephan continued on to explain the 'plan of action', as he put it.He was going to send Claire and I back to school, along with the rest of the other Shape Shifters who needed to complete their education. In the meanwhile, he said we would both be put to the test, maximizing and exercising our abilities.Because I have used my ability for a while, I pretty much know how it works. However, they all insisted I learn more and try to do more to bring out all of my possible abilities.Claire, however, will be gone for about a week before I get to see her. The full moon’s tomorrow night, and that would be her
