Tears that streamed down my face got carried away by the water in which I was... sinking.

"I didn't do it, I didn't do it, I DIDN'T DO IT!!." I kept thinking to myself as I shut my eyes, wanting this horrible nightmare to end and wake up any moment. But that wasn't the case. My body kept slowly drifting down into the bottomless ocean of water. "Even nightmares aren't as horrible as my life."

I didn't want myself to end up this way. I had greater aims and dreams. It is said that right before the death of a person, they start recalling their precious moments spent on Earth. The moment I shut my eyes, a short and bitter film of my life started playing in my mind. I guess I really was going to die.

....

I was just an ordinary boy who dreamt of becoming a science teacher because of my love of stars and constellations. I wasn't a bright kid and was really timid. That was one of the reasons why I was dying without anyone to cry beside my grave, if my body was ever found.

It'd been 2 years ever since my father divorced my mother and left me and my 1 month old sister in my mother's care. Obviously enough, it was hard for her to carry the expenses of me and my sister, Emily. She used to work in a small company but the amount of money she earned from her job wasn't enough.

She went into a state of depression and started relying on drugs and alcohol.

One day she threw a tantrum, cursing and stumbling across the street. I found her on my way home from a grocery store and brought her back home. I'd had enough of it. "Mom, please! You need to stop!!"I barged straight into her room and smacked her hand away which was reaching to grab the small bottle of drugs from her bed.

"How dare you do that, you insolent brat!? I told you to look after Emily, didn't I?!" She raised her hand in the air to slap me but her angered expression turned into surprise when she found herself wrapped in the warmth of my embrace.

"It's okay, mom. Everything will be alright." I patted her head.

Her eyes stung and she couldn't control her emotions anymore. She bursted into tears and hugged me tightly. "I-I am so sorry that I can't give you the life you deserve, Rai..."

I just had a blank and empty expression when she told me that. I wasn't surprised. It had always happened like that. One moment she apologises and the next moment she loses it-

"Aaarrrgghh!! Why are you here?!!" She shoved me to the ground and I winced in pain but recovered from it quickly.

"Goodnight, mom." I flashed a sad and sympathetic smile at her before leaving the room.

*Next morning*

Rays of golden sunlight filled my bedroom. I fluttered open my eyes as I felt the bright sunlight against my eyes. I yawned as I lazily rose from my bed and completed the routine of brushing my teeth and getting ready for school.

I headed out to the dining room expecting my mother to be in the kitchen making breakfast. But to my surprise, she wasn't there.

"Mom? Mom! Are you still sleeping?" I called out to her. "Maybe she's in her room.." I thought as I casually made my way to her room.

I gasped in shock and disgust when I opened the door. "N-No way... Emily.." I felt a knot in my stomach as I fell to the ground in shock. Adrenaline rushed through my veins when I saw my mother standing next to the blood soaked and injured body of my little sister with a knife in her blood covered hand and a sickening grin on her face.

She threw her head back and laughed insanely. "HAHAHAHA!!!"

"Why did you do this?!!" I couldn't control the anger welling up inside me.

*Thwakk*

The sound of my hand smacking my mother's face resonated in the dead silence. I couldn't believe I had done it but I masked my surprise with my anger. She slowly looked from me to my sister with a surprised and horrified face. "W-What did I...NO!!" She fell next to Emily cried her lungs out when her stabbed body came in view.

"Why did you do this to Emily?! What did she ever to do you?!!" I lashed out at her and began to weep next to my sister's corpse.

"I-I...Rai...I didn't mean to...." She couldn't find any words to explain herself.

"It's all my fault! All my fault! And I will pay for that. Rai, please take care of yourself..." She smiled sadly.

"Huh? What do you mea-!?" I gasped when I saw my mother plunging the knife into her chest. Blood spurted out of her chest and some of it splattered onto my face as I watched her fall to the ground with a thud. I rushed to her side and nudged her arm, "You're there, right? Mom? Mom!"

"N-No...this is not happening. This is not happening...it has to be a dream. Wake up, Rai. Wake up!!" I slapped and pinched myself several hard times to wake up from this nightmare but it wasn't working. It was real— All of it was real. My face turned pale and out of blood. I stood up and backed away from the corpses of my mother and sister.

"I-I have to get out of here...."

The moon was hiding behind the night sky and yet it's glowing light still managed to illuminate the darkness of the night....but nothing could ever lighten up my heart which was harboring all the darkness into it with time. The wind picked up it's pace and I hugged myself tightly for warmth in this chilly weather. It made me feel sick and disgusted of myself. I began questioning why was I even alive at this moment. Was I just hoping for everything to turn out to be a sick joke all along? My body felt heavy and my eyes were dead with no hope of living on."It's already over for me then why am I still living? Just..why?" That's all I could think at that moment. I hadn't realised when my eyes started feeling heavy and my head hit the soft pillow. The moment I heard the door creak open, I yawned and parted my eyelids ever so slightly to see who is at the door.It was Hazel, on her wheelchair with a glass of juice in her one hand and a pair of jeans and shirt in the other. She greeted me with her usual signature smile and invited herself in. I tried to shove my sleepy self aside and rubbed my eyes as I let my back lean against the wall.I watched her as she inched closer to the bedside and handed over the glass to me. "Looks like you slept well. Do you feel fine now?""Yeah, I feel better than before. Maybe I was just too exhausted.. what are those for?" I ask, after taking a sip of the refreshing juice. *next morning* I fluttered open my eyes when I felt the warm sunlight kiss me good morning. I got out of my bed and finished off the daily routine. I walked to the kitchen and prepared egg toasts for myself— it'd always been my breakfast as far as I could remember, since that was only dish I could cook. My mom, well...she never had time for me so she was never there to cook me breakfast or dinner, I always had to buy takeouts for dinner. I stuffed the egg toast into my mouth and casually sat on the couch ans switched on the T.V. "Not the boring news again.." I thought and was about to switch to the next channel butsomething caught my attention. I began listening carefully to what the reporter had to say: "Two victims of assumed murder in the city of Blueburn reported last night at 9:45 pm. • Broken Inside   An encounter

Days passed by with Noel going out for the investigation early in the morning before I wake up and Hazel locking herself inside her house for most time of the day. Naturally, I got worried about her and tried knocking at her door and calling out her name several times but no sound came from the other side of the door except for what seemed like continuous tapping of her fingers on a keyboard and clinking of cans as it fell on the floor. Those noises were the only evidence that proved her existence inside that apartment which saw no light for more than two weeks. I could have given her space if she was actually working, but as far as I know, she is merely a keeper of the orphanage. She isn't even legally an adult so it won't make sense for her to work on something that requires a keyboard. I wish I could just slam the door open and drag her out of that den to see the light of the day—Obviously it won't kill her to come out once in a while. But today, I didn

  • Broken Inside   Yet Another Confusion

It was already midnight."Noel promised that he'd come earlier so what's taking him so long?" I kept tapping my feet on the ground restlessly while waiting for Noel with dinner all ready and served on two plates on the table. It was getting too late so I decided to wait for him after finishing up the meal. I picked up my fork and started digging into the meat. As soon as a piece went into my mouth, the cold and hard layers of the meat landed on my tongue and my face twisted in disgust and I immediately spat it out."Ugh..the food got cold..." Frustrated, I dropped the silverware on the table with a loud clink. The taste of the cold meat still lingered on my tongue even after washing my mouth."I can't deal with this anymore. I'll just call him. He's probably in the investigation scene and his phone must've been switched off but it wouldn't hurt for me to try, right?" I mumbled under my breath and made my way to the bedroom to gr

"What? They moved next door? What kind of scheme are they plotting now?" Noel's irritated voice shot through the speaker of my phone. After I returned back to my apartment, I explained everything to Hazel and called Noel to inform him about them moving into our building. At first, Sam and Aleck moving into our building didn't seem as suspicious as I thought it would be until I related the circumstances around which they'd come here — The killer was on the loose, Noel had been attacked and all of a sudden they appeared infront of the apartment I live in, which is originally Noel's.As expected, Noel too, thought that it was unsettling that they were moving next door. We couldn't help but think if they were related to Noel's assault in any way since they'd been holding a grudge against him since forever. I shared my theory with him but he seemed unsure and skeptical about it."But that's unlikely of them. They wouldn't dare to lay a finger

"Me? What makes you certain that it'll be me?" Puzzled, Hazel arched a brow at him slightly tilting her head.I glanced over at Hazel for a brief moment, to see if she's taking in the news well. But to my surprise, she didn't seem tensed at all. Does her death not bother her? Or perhaps she had made up her mind to face the worst and was taking the situation more practically.I snapped back from my swirling thoughts when I heard Noel speaking up."I'm not certain, of course. It's a hunch. That being aside, if the killer actually wants to kill the ones Rai cares about, he might have a personal reason for committing murder." He frowned, and then turned to meet my eyes, "Rai, have you ever offended anyone so deeply that made someone readily commit murder?"I took a minute to recall anyone that would have been hurt by me so deeply but I couldn't find anyone like that from my memories."I don't recall anyone

  • Broken Inside   What is his intention?

I couldn't stop thinking about the message when I was at the hospital where Noel was getting his surgery done. I felt sick and disgusted...and useless. I could only pray for him to be alive. Something wasn't sitting right with me that entire time. I couldn't comprehend why the killer was after Noel instead of me. I was the one to witness the murder, not Noel...then why? He doesn't even know that I was involved.Anxiety and unease filled my chest as I kept tapping my feet on the ground restlessly, waiting for the doctor, while Hazel's weeps were crystal clear in the cold and quiet hallway. Not a word slipped out of her mouth ever since the incident. She just kept crying for hours like that. The only words that ever came out of her mouth were, "It's all my fault...I shouldn't have brought him there.."I don't know how long they'd known each other but they certainly value each other like family. The door of the surgery room swung open.I immediately looked u

I remembered Mira flashing an encouraging smile at me when she said, "I'll give you two days off. Go have some rest." Days were flying by smoothly and everything returned back to normal—no more murders, and nol more threats. I stopped having nightmares about that night and my paranoia slowly faded away, too. Whereas for Noel and I, we've eventually become great friends over the past few months. Noel was really smart, but more than that, he was weird. I had seen him texting people with his phone upside down. He's too lazy to even switch on the lights in his room. I'd yelled at him several times when I saw the lights off as soon as I got home. But he just says, "Lazy is such an ugly word. I prefer the term 'selective participation'."Even though our differences stood as a barrier between us, his friendliness and weirdness eventually drew me closer to him and it gradually broke the wall between us. The awkwardness was no more there and it almost became an everyday routine for Hazel to hangout at our apartment as well.I h
