Just when I thought I was done sobbing, I turned around with my trembling feet and tried to move but.. I couldn't. My legs went numb almost immediately and I fell on the hard marble floor with a thud. When I felt my skin in contact with a liquid as soon as my legs touched the ground, I realised that I was surrounded by a pool of crimson red blood— My mother and Emily's blood. My eyes stung and tears started welling up again in my eyes when I took a proper look at them.

They were covered in blood and deep, sharp wounds were engraved on their bodies. My little sister's eyes were wide open —but dead and empty— with blood flowing out of her mouth and stomach and her features were mauled beyond recognition.

"What a monster..." I grimaced.

My heart tightened when I imagined the moment when my mother was piercing her body into pieces like an animal.

When I was busy wrapping my head around everything that had just unfolded in front of me, loud sounds of siren filled my ear drums. It was the police. My gut warned me that I shouldn't wait for the police to come in and assume that I'd killed my family. "I-I have to go or they might think that I did all of this. I have to run.."

My heart hammered against my chest as I managed to get myself to my feet. I took the knife stained in blood just in case and shoved it inside my pocket before hurrying out of my apartment and down the stairs. Just when I got out of the apartment-

"FREEZE! Hands in the air where I can see them, young man!"

A couple of policemen were standing at the exit of the building with their guns pointed at me. I obeyed their command and hesitantly raised my hands in the air.

"Behind your head!" One of the policemen yelled out. Once again, I did as I was told to. I put my hands behind my head and waited for them to come near me.

"L-Listen, sir! I didn't do anything! Please, you have to understand!" I panicked.

The two officers shoved their guns inside their sheaths and advanced towards me.

"We know what you've done. An old woman living next your building saw you with two dead bodies. It wasn't clever for a murderer to leave the curtains open." One of the cops scoffed at me.

I tried my best to protest and explain what'd actually happened but they didn't seem to buy any of that. I was bound to handcuffs around my wrist and was roughly dragged into their van. The only thing I could hear in my mind was a hushed voice in the back of my head telling me to escape. I tried taking deep breaths and calm myself down. With a cool head, I tried to think of a plan to escape but it wasn't long before something else caught my attention.

I looked out the window and saw the two officers outside the van, talking about something for quite a while. I pressed my ears against the glass window to hear if they were talking about me. Even though their voices were not clear, I could make out some words since I've always been great with my ears.

"Hey, keep an eye on that boy for me, will ya? I have to take a quick tour to the bathroom." One of the policemen informed the other with a sheepish, apologetic smile.

"Be quick, alright? We haven't gotten the whole day for this." The other policeman sighed.

Right after he went, I could see the other officer coming towards the van. His head peeked inside the opened door of the driver seat and he stared at me in a way that probably meant "If you move, you're dead meat."

He then duck his head a bit lower than the driver seat to take out his pack of cigarettes and a lighter from his stash before disappearing behind the van.

"I think he's out there smoking. This is my chance."  I thought to myself as I slowly reached out to slide the door of the van open with my cuffed hands and make a run for it.

"What an idiot. Left the door wide open for the criminal to escape." I scoffed at his stupidity and got out of the van with a triumphant grin.

I ran as fast as my legs could carry them in the dead silence. I didn't think of releasing my hands from the handcuffs— I just wanted to get away from everything. I ran for about half a minute when I heard someone yelling out to me from behind.

"Stop right there! Don't think of running or I'll shoot you!"

I froze in my tracks and realised that the familiar voice belonged to the cop. I knew what I had to do for getting rid of him. My mind went blank with nothing but just one alterior motive engraved in my mind. I turned around and charged at him with all of my strength. He was so surprised at my outburst that he'd forgotten to pull the trigger of the gun that he'd been pointing at me.

He was on the ground in an instant wincing in pain, the blood flowing out of his stomach like a river.

I didn't know what I was doing or why I did it. By the time I realised what I had done, it was already too late. The knife was already too deep inside him and a huge amount of blood had already flown out— he was dead.

"N-No...What have I done?! What were you thinking, Rai?! Sir? A-Are you alright?!" I bent over the cop's body and checked his pulse. I clamped my both hands over my mouth to stop myself from screaming or making any sort of noise that could attract an audience. I looked around in panic to see if anybody had seen me in such a state, but thankfully, not even a single soul was out where I was standing — at least that was a relief.

"No way....I-I killed him..." I swallowed hard and hesitantly took a step back but my legs went weak and I ended up tripping over my feet. I fell on the ground very hard but it was nothing compared to the pain and fear I was going through. Everything happened so fast that it overwhelmed me. "Why...Why me?" I buried my face in my hands and started crying again helplessly, cursing at my horrible and unfortunate fate.

I didn't expect any of this to happen when I woke up this morning. My dad always used to say "Every morning brings a happy start in people's life."

But that's definitely not what happened to me this morning. I woke up today thinking that it would be better than yesterday and believing in what my dad said...

But I ended up losing everything I ever had.

*next morning* I fluttered open my eyes when I felt the warm sunlight kiss me good morning. I got out of my bed and finished off the daily routine. I walked to the kitchen and prepared egg toasts for myself— it'd always been my breakfast as far as I could remember, since that was only dish I could cook. My mom, well...she never had time for me so she was never there to cook me breakfast or dinner, I always had to buy takeouts for dinner. I stuffed the egg toast into my mouth and casually sat on the couch ans switched on the T.V. "Not the boring news again.." I thought and was about to switch to the next channel butsomething caught my attention. I began listening carefully to what the reporter had to say: "Two victims of assumed murder in the city of Blueburn reported last night at 9:45 pm. • Broken Inside   An encounter

Days passed by with Noel going out for the investigation early in the morning before I wake up and Hazel locking herself inside her house for most time of the day. Naturally, I got worried about her and tried knocking at her door and calling out her name several times but no sound came from the other side of the door except for what seemed like continuous tapping of her fingers on a keyboard and clinking of cans as it fell on the floor. Those noises were the only evidence that proved her existence inside that apartment which saw no light for more than two weeks. I could have given her space if she was actually working, but as far as I know, she is merely a keeper of the orphanage. She isn't even legally an adult so it won't make sense for her to work on something that requires a keyboard. I wish I could just slam the door open and drag her out of that den to see the light of the day—Obviously it won't kill her to come out once in a while. But today, I didn

It was already midnight."Noel promised that he'd come earlier so what's taking him so long?" I kept tapping my feet on the ground restlessly while waiting for Noel with dinner all ready and served on two plates on the table. It was getting too late so I decided to wait for him after finishing up the meal. I picked up my fork and started digging into the meat. As soon as a piece went into my mouth, the cold and hard layers of the meat landed on my tongue and my face twisted in disgust and I immediately spat it out."Ugh..the food got cold..." Frustrated, I dropped the silverware on the table with a loud clink. The taste of the cold meat still lingered on my tongue even after washing my mouth."I can't deal with this anymore. I'll just call him. He's probably in the investigation scene and his phone must've been switched off but it wouldn't hurt for me to try, right?" I mumbled under my breath and made my way to the bedroom to gr

"What? They moved next door? What kind of scheme are they plotting now?" Noel's irritated voice shot through the speaker of my phone. After I returned back to my apartment, I explained everything to Hazel and called Noel to inform him about them moving into our building. At first, Sam and Aleck moving into our building didn't seem as suspicious as I thought it would be until I related the circumstances around which they'd come here — The killer was on the loose, Noel had been attacked and all of a sudden they appeared infront of the apartment I live in, which is originally Noel's.As expected, Noel too, thought that it was unsettling that they were moving next door. We couldn't help but think if they were related to Noel's assault in any way since they'd been holding a grudge against him since forever. I shared my theory with him but he seemed unsure and skeptical about it."But that's unlikely of them. They wouldn't dare to lay a finger

But to my surprise, she didn't seem tensed at all. Does her death not bother her? Or perhaps she had made up her mind to face the worst and was taking the situation more practically.I snapped back from my swirling thoughts when I heard Noel speaking up."I'm not certain, of course. It's a hunch. That being aside, if the killer actually wants to kill the ones Rai cares about, he might have a personal reason for committing murder." He frowned, and then turned to meet my eyes, "Rai, have you ever offended anyone so deeply that made someone readily commit murder?"I took a minute to recall anyone that would have been hurt by me so deeply but I couldn't find anyone like that from my memories."I don't recall anyone

He doesn't even know that I was involved.Anxiety and unease filled my chest as I kept tapping my feet on the ground restlessly, waiting for the doctor, while Hazel's weeps were crystal clear in the cold and quiet hallway. Not a word slipped out of her mouth ever since the incident. She just kept crying for hours like that.
