Days were flying by smoothly and everything returned back to normal—no more murders, and nol more threats. I stopped having nightmares about that night and my paranoia slowly faded away, too. Whereas for Noel and I, we've eventually become great friends over the past few months. Noel was really smart, but more than that, he was weird. I had seen him texting people with his phone upside down. He's too lazy to even switch on the lights in his room. I'd yelled at him several times when I saw the lights off as soon as I got home.
But he just says, "Lazy is such an ugly word. I prefer the term 'selective participation'."
Even though our differences stood as a barrier between us, his friendliness and weirdness eventually drew me closer to him and it gradually broke the wall between us. The awkwardness was no more there and it almost became an everyday routine for Hazel to hangout at our apartment as well.
I hadn't expected this but it was quite surprising when it became clear that Noel's father was in his mid 40's and not in his late 20's. He looked kind of young, but I guess, our eyes can betray us sometimes.
I came across many surprising events related to Noel. He told me that he'd once been caught up in a murder case and was held as a suspect but managed to defend himself and get away from the suspect list. After all, he was a law student and knew his work really well— extremely well, to be exact.
Hazel talked about how he'd once helped a detective to put the last piece of the puzzle in place. All of this, including his orphanage eventually increased his father's position as a businessman among the politicians and ever since, he had many connections with high post officers and famous politicians.
Hazel and Noel kept me so occupied that I had forgotten all about my family and the killer.
I still continued my job as a worker in the coffee shop regardless of the consequences.
And just like any other day, I woke up to the annoying buzzing of the alarm. In my half - asleep state, I slammed the clock shut and went back to sleep.
"There's still a minute before 7 am. I can still sleep..." I muttered and slowly closed my eyes.
"Hey! Wake up. You're gonna be late for work!" I could feel Noel's foot kicking my back.
"It's 7:45! Can you hear me? 7:45!" He yelled loudly.
When my mind finally processed what I was hearing, my eyes flew open almost immediately and I jumped out of the bed.
"7:45?! I have only 15 minutes! Why didn't you wake me up earlier?"
"I did, but a certain someone just didn't wanna wake up." He scoffed.
I ran to the bathroom and brushed my teeth while slipping into my shirt in such a hurry that I forgot to wear my tie. As I was buttoning my shirt, my eyes fell on an old scar on my chest. The memories of my father flooded back into my mind. I stared hard at it, and a disappointed smile formed on my lips, "It never went, huh?"
"Are you planning on staying there for the next century?" Noel's sarcasm interrupted my thoughts.
"Coming." I replied as I made my way out of my room while buttoning my shirt.
I managed to reach the coffee shop just in time to see a new manager at the place. She was nothing like Damon. Her name was Mira. When I met her, she was really nice to me and treated me like her little brother. She was in her 20's. All of my co-workers couldn't stop talking about how beautiful she was. I just stood in a corner and laughed at them when I saw their dejected faces. They were all head over heels for her, but as expected, she politely refused their initiatives to make up a conversation with her.
"How did it go?" I asked, barely stifling a laugh.
"Laugh all you want, kid." My co - worker sighed. He looked like all of his energy was drained out.
The rest of the day was as lively as ever. When I reached home, I was greeted my Hazel at the door instead of Noel.
"Oh, it's you! Where's Noel?" She smiled at me as I took off my shoes and walked inside.
"He went out in a hurry. Told that he had some important work to do." She said, "I've already made dinner for us. I'll bring the food to your room."
I thanked her and made my way to my room. I took a shower and came out of the bathroom wearing only my shorts. I ruffled my wet hair with the towel hanging around my neck. Just when I was reaching for my wardrobe to take out a shirt—
"Here's your dinner!" Hazel barged in with a smile.
Her sudden appearance startled me.
"Woah! Don't surprise me like that." I sighed. When I began wearing my shirt, I could feel her eyes on me. For a long time.
She kept the plate on the table and asked in a concerned voice, "How did you get that big scar?"
"Oh, you mean this?" I looked down at my chest, "I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy when I was 13 so I had to get a heart transplant."
"It must have been really tough on you... Cardiomyopathy is rare for children to have." She frowned.
"Everyday, I had to listen to listen to their apologies. The hearts in the hospital had been over and there were no donors. I would have died if I wouldn't have gotten a heart transplant in the next 5 hours. I felt weak and hopeless." I continued, my expression grim, "My father is a cardiac surgeon so I was really lucky to have him by my side. He came running into the operation theatre saying that he'd found a heart donor. I never asked him how he got it, but I was relieved that he did. He personally carried out my heart transplant and it went well. He saved his son but... left him soon after."
She put her hand on my shoulder and smiled, "But hey, look on the bright side! You're living a better life now."
I snorted, brushing off her hand dismissively. "My father left. I got accused of killing my sister and mom. I tried to suicide and then I had a near death encounter with a serial killer. And you're saying that I am living a better life? You have a weird way of thinking."
"You're still alive, though. So, doesn't that count?" She smiled bitterly, "Some people... are finding it hard to do just that."
Somehow, the way she said it made me pause. I shook my head, thinking that I was just imagining.
"No one can win against your words." I sighed in defeat.
"I should be thanking your father for keeping such a fun person alive." She chuckled and I smiled back this time.
Even though my father saved my life, to this day, I couldn't shake off this weird feeling that someone else's life was beating inside my chest. But whoever that person was, I am glad that they were there.
I began shuffling through my wardrobe for that one outfit I wanted to wear. My face lit up when my eyes caught the sight of the black jacket and white shirt under a pile of my clothes. "Ah, here it is!" I took them out with a big smile. I hadn't dressed up to go out for quite a while. I was so occupied with my part-time job and not to mention, taking a few trips to the police station for acquiring legal permission to get my charges off me, that is, with the help of Mr. Ryan.We were going to an amusement park. Hazel had suggested that I should take a day off from work since everything was becoming too tiring for me. I remembered Mira flashing an encouraging smile at me when she said, "I'll give you two days off. Go have some rest." I couldn't thank her enough for her kindness.Hazel was the one to propose the idea of an amusement park. I couldn't stop thinking about the message when I was at the hospital where Noel was getting his surgery done. I felt sick and disgusted...and useless. I could only pray for him to be alive. Something wasn't sitting right with me that entire time. I couldn't comprehend why the killer was after Noel instead of me. I was the one to witness the murder, not Noel...then why? He doesn't even know that I was involved.Anxiety and unease filled my chest as I kept tapping my feet on the ground restlessly, waiting for the doctor, while Hazel's weeps were crystal clear in the cold and quiet hallway. Not a word slipped out of her mouth ever since the incident. She just kept crying for hours like that. The only words that ever came out of her mouth were, "It's all my fault...I shouldn't have brought him there.."I don't know how long they'd known each other but they certainly value each other like family. The door of the surgery room swung open.I immediately looked u
"Me? What makes you certain that it'll be me?" Puzzled, Hazel arched a brow at him slightly tilting her head.I glanced over at Hazel for a brief moment, to see if she's taking in the news well. But to my surprise, she didn't seem tensed at all. Does her death not bother her? Or perhaps she had made up her mind to face the worst and was taking the situation more practically.I snapped back from my swirling thoughts when I heard Noel speaking up."I'm not certain, of course. It's a hunch. That being aside, if the killer actually wants to kill the ones Rai cares about, he might have a personal reason for committing murder." He frowned, and then turned to meet my eyes, "Rai, have you ever offended anyone so deeply that made someone readily commit murder?"I took a minute to recall anyone that would have been hurt by me so deeply but I couldn't find anyone like that from my memories."I don't recall anyone
"What? They moved next door? What kind of scheme are they plotting now?" Noel's irritated voice shot through the speaker of my phone. After I returned back to my apartment, I explained everything to Hazel and called Noel to inform him about them moving into our building. At first, Sam and Aleck moving into our building didn't seem as suspicious as I thought it would be until I related the circumstances around which they'd come here — The killer was on the loose, Noel had been attacked and all of a sudden they appeared infront of the apartment I live in, which is originally Noel's.As expected, Noel too, thought that it was unsettling that they were moving next door. We couldn't help but think if they were related to Noel's assault in any way since they'd been holding a grudge against him since forever. I shared my theory with him but he seemed unsure and skeptical about it."But that's unlikely of them. They wouldn't dare to lay a finger
It was already midnight."Noel promised that he'd come earlier so what's taking him so long?" I kept tapping my feet on the ground restlessly while waiting for Noel with dinner all ready and served on two plates on the table. It was getting too late so I decided to wait for him after finishing up the meal. I picked up my fork and started digging into the meat. As soon as a piece went into my mouth, the cold and hard layers of the meat landed on my tongue and my face twisted in disgust and I immediately spat it out."Ugh..the food got cold..." Frustrated, I dropped the silverware on the table with a loud clink. The taste of the cold meat still lingered on my tongue even after washing my mouth."I can't deal with this anymore. I'll just call him. He's probably in the investigation scene and his phone must've been switched off but it wouldn't hurt for me to try, right?" Days passed by with Noel going out for the investigation early in the morning before I wake up and Hazel locking herself inside her house for most time of the day. Naturally, I got worried about her and tried knocking at her door and calling out her name several times but no sound came from the other side of the door except for what seemed like continuous tapping of her fingers on a keyboard and clinking of cans as it fell on the floor. Those noises were the only evidence that proved her existence inside that apartment which saw no light for more than two weeks. I could have given her space if she was actually working, but as far as I know, she is merely a keeper of the orphanage. She isn't even legally an adult so it won't make sense for her to work on something that requires a keyboard. I wish I could just slam the door open and drag her out of that den to see the light of the day—Obviously it won't kill her to come out once in a while. But today, I didn
Tears that streamed down my face got carried away by the water in which I was... sinking."I didn't do it, I didn't do it, I DIDN'T DO IT!!." I kept thinking to myself as I shut my eyes, wanting this horrible nightmare to end and wake up any moment. But that wasn't the case. My body kept slowly drifting down into the bottomless ocean of water. "Even nightmares aren't as horrible as my life."I didn't want myself to end up this way. I had greater aims and dreams. It is said that right before the death of a person, they start recalling their precious moments spent on Earth. The moment I shut my eyes, a short and bitter film of my life started playing in my mind. I guess I really was going to die.....I was just an ordinary boy who dreamt of becoming a science teacher because of my love of stars and constellations. I wasn't a bright kid and was really timid. That was one of the reasons why I was dying wit
Just when I thought I was done sobbing, I turned around with my trembling feet and tried to move but.. I couldn't. My legs went numb almost immediately and I fell on the hard marble floor with a thud. When I felt my skin in contact with a liquid as soon as my legs touched the ground, I realised that I was surrounded by a pool of crimson red blood— My mother and Emily's blood. My eyes stung and tears started welling up again in my eyes when I took a proper look at them. They were covered in blood and deep, sharp wounds were engraved on their bodies. My little sister's eyes were wide open —but dead and empty— with blood flowing out of her mouth and stomach and her features were mauled beyond recognition."What a monster..." I grimaced. My heart tightened when I imagined the moment when my mother was piercing her body into pieces like an animal. When I was busy wrapping my head around everything that had just unfolded in front of me, lo

After the murder of my manager, I started getting paranoid — I couldn't walk on the streets without my heart banging against my chest and my eyes wandering here and there, searching for anything suspicious. For all I know is that he could just come to my apartment this instant and kill me, but why isn't he doing it yet? Perhaps, does he yet not know where I live even though he killed my manager? I've no idea. I can't help but blame my unlucky self. If only I hadn't been late to work that day, I wouldn't have gotten into the night shift and taken a walk in the park, and all of this would have been prevented. The manager wouldn't have died. I couldn't imagine what his wife and children must be going through— and it's all because of me. I couldn't sleep the whole night. Just kept tossing and turning on my bed, thinking about a plan to save myself from this mess. I sunk so deep into my thoughts that I didn't realise that it had become morning already, that is
Last night was the most horrible and eventful night ever. I'd dressed the wound before going to sleep but I couldn't get even an ounce of sleep because of the stinging pain from the wound. I just kept tossing and turning on the bed restlessly. The very comfortable bed seemed like the most uncomfortable for me.Soon, my eyelids felt heavy and I forced myself to sleep. All the running had left me tired and worn out.*Next morning*I woke up to the familiar chirping of the birds and for once felt blessed to be surrounded by such beauty. I stretched my arms to wipe the grogginess away. The smile I had earlier was replaced by disdain when I felt blood oozing out of the dressing around my wounded arm."Ugh, the wound's open." I winced as I clutched the wound tightly with my other hand and got up from the bed.I was about to go change the dressing, when—
