Veronica’s POV
Placing my ear on the bathroom door to hear if Logan had taken me to my work. Yet, he did. With shaky hands I opened the door, peering out I saw the room was empty. Not even the curtains were moving. With a deep breath I stepped out, my feet sticking to the tile floors. I stood in front of my bed wondering if I should lay down or sleep on the mat that was placed next to it.
“Why am I here? Why did Marcus make me believe that I was doing good by coming with Logan? I should have run away. Away from everyone and everything.” My voice was barely audible. Then a knock on my door made me startle. Making my heart beat extremely fast. “Who is it?” My voice shaking.
“Miss Veronica, Alpha Logan had sent me to give you something. Can I come in?”
“Um… Sure…”
The door creaked open, and Henry poked his head through the opening. “I do apologise for the intrusion, but Alpha Logan requests your company in the dining hall in,” He looked at his watch, “Two hours time. Please take a nice warm shower and I will bring you your outfit to wear.”
“I told him I didn’t want any new clothes.”
“I’m only doing what I am instructed to do. So, if you don’t wish to wear the outfit he has chosen for you then it is so. But, he wants you to have an option.” Henry turned to make his way out, but then stopped in his tracks, “Oh, and Miss Veronica.”
“Yeah?”
“Alpha Logan isn’t as bad as everyone says he is. I’ve worked for him for many years. He might seem cold on the outside but, on the inside he is someone else.”
I nodded and he nodded then left.
My gaze turned to the bathroom, wondering if I should take Logan up on his offer. Then the sound of my stomach rumbling tickled my ears. With a sigh I took a long warm shower. I loved the soap that was placed in the shower, the smell of lavender crept up my nose. I loved the smell of it. The foam of the shampoo ran down my body as I stood under the water.
I enjoyed every moment under the warm water. For years I have bathed with ice cold water from a bucket. I never thought that I would ever know how warm water would feel on my body. The only place I have ever felt this warmth was when I washed the dishes.
After the lovely shower, I stepped into the room once again but to my surprise I found a beautiful long silk black dress laying on the bed. As I looked down I saw stunning silver heels that match the dress perfectly. I released the towel from my body and wrapped it over my hair. Now I stood fully naked before my bed. With my fingertips I stroked over the fabric, they glided so smoothly over it.
With hesitation, I put the dress on. It fitted perfectly. It complimented my curves and showed my shoulders. Never in a million years I would have thought of wearing this type of dress, but here I stood. In front of the mirror, looking at myself… For once there was beauty. The slit of the dress came to the middle of my thigh. That was perfect, not cut too high or too low.
There wasn’t much I could do with my hair, I found a hairdryer and quickly dried it. Only letting it hang loose is all I could do. I only knew how to tie it up in a pony or wear it loose, that was it. Seeing there was make-up on the dressing table. I didn’t know how to use it so I decided not to look like a clown and decided to put on my shoes and make my way down stairs.
To my surprise Henry was standing at the bottom of the stairway, as if he was waiting for me. Coming to the bottom he stuck out his arm, waiting for me to lock in my arm with his.
“Miss Veronica, you look stunning. I’m glad to see you decided to wear the dress.”
“You have interesting taste.” I said softly.
“It wasn’t me who chose the dress.” He kept his gaze forward, as he led me to the dinning hall.
As we stepped through the door, my eyes caught the sight of candles and roses on the table. Then my eyes caught Alpha Logan, he made his way to his feet. As he stood, I scanned him up and down. He wore a black suit and his hair was neatly combed. I tried not to stare too much, because I didn’t want to show any disrespect towards the Alpha.
“Little one. You looked…” He froze. I gave him an uncomfortable smile. “Please sit. Hope you're hungry.”
“I could eat.”
“Good.” He smiled. I have never noticed his smile, kind of think of it I never saw him smile before. It is kind of warming. “Please have a seat. Henry, you can bring the food.”
“Right away Sir.” Henry first pulled out my chair and gestured for me to sit, before leaving for the kitchen.
For a while we sat in silence. The awkwardness was deafening, until Logan decided to speak, “So, um…” He gave an awkward chuckle. “I’ve never been speechless before.”
“I’m sorry.” I whispered.
“No, please. It’s not your fault. It’s just…” Before he could continue speaking the food was placed in front of us. I sat still with my hand folded on my lap, waiting for him to start eating. “Um, well. Enjoy.”
With a fake smile, I picked up my fork and took a small bite. I closed my eyes enjoying the bite of food. The taste danced over my taste buds, I never ate a warm meal before. Not to mention a meal that wasn’t scraps.
“Veronica.”
“Mm.” I looked up quickly, my mouth stuffed with food.
Logan chuckled, “Sorry, I didn’t… Um…” His smile vanished as he stared at me. “What happened to you? At your old pack?”
My eyes widened as soon as the words left his mouth, “Nothing.” I responded quickly, and stuffed more food into my mouth.
Why does he want to know what went on in my pack? I was a maid. I worked for my food and for my place to sleep, that was it. He didn’t need to know the details, he didn’t need to know more than he already put together. I know he suspected something, that something happened more than I led on. But, I can’t bother him with my burdens, this was something I needed to sort out by myself. Something that I can handle by myself, something I had always dealt with on my own.
“Little one, you can tell me. I need to know. No one looks-”
I looked at him with confusion. Do I look bad? I thought I looked normal, “Looks like what?”
“The way you do. And by the way you are eating, it tells me that they never fed you.”
“Well, you’re wrong. I decided not to eat at times. But if it is such a big problem by the way I eat, I’ll go to my room.” I started to make my way to my feed.
Logan jumped up, “No!”
Startled. I froze in my spot and closed my eyes, waiting for the punch to come. Then the sound of a sigh filled the silence. “Little one, I…”
“I’m sorry Alpha, I promise I will never disrespect you again! Please, just…” My heart felt as if it was beating out of my chest, then I turned around and started making my way to the door.
“Veronica!” His voice echoed through the air. I bit my lip as I stopped in my tracks. “I tried being kind and what do I get? This!”
I felt a flash of anger mixed with sorrow, I spun around, “You don’t get it, I don’t want to be here! I was forced to come with you. I want to be home. I don’t want to be…” Tears started running down my cheeks.
“What do you want me to do? Huh? Send you back, because I will. But I fucking won’t! You deserve better than your pack. You deserve a pack that won’t treat you like utter shit!”
“No…” I whispered, I looked up, my vision blurry from the tears. “You just don’t get it.”
“What don’t I get? Tell me then.” He made his way to his feet and stepped closer towards me.
I took a step back, not wanting him to touch me, “Just…”
“Just what? Tell me what?”
I shook my head and walked out of the dining room and made my way to my room.
Veronica’s POVFalling onto my bed, I curled into a ball and tears just kept pouring out. The soft hum of the light filled the silence. It was late, and the moon cast a pale glow through the blinds, it casted painting stripes on the floor. I was trying to fall asleep but my thoughts kept drifting back to Logan. It was the first time he had raised his voice at me. Today had been the breaking point, with him snapping at me over something so stupid, so childish. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something much deeper was bothering him, and I don’t think it was the fact that I was underfed. It couldn’t be. And why would he care for me? Why would he want to be nice to someone that is nothing in a pack? A knock at the door snapped me back into reality. My heart raced as I stood up. I took a big breath and dried my tears and made my way across the room. I didn’t want to see anyone right now, especially not Logan. But the knock came again, more insistent this time. My hands trembling slight
Veronica’s POVMy eyes shot open as pain radiated up my leg the moment I tried to turn in bed. I blinked against the bright morning light that filtered through the curtains. My mind started playing back the event that happened the night before. ‘The fall in the forest. Can’t believe I was so stupid, I just had to stand still. Why didn’t I look where I was stepping? The sharp, twisting pain in my ankle as I fell to the ground.’I tried to sit up, but a stabbing pain shot up my leg making me wince. With a groan, I swung my legs over the side of the bed, gently testing my weight on the injured ankle. Nope. Not happening. I sank back into the soft mattress, frustrated I let out a loud sigh. Staring at the ceiling I heard the door creak open, startled, I sat up. An unfamiliar face stood in the doorframe, her silhouette sharp against the dim light of the hallway. Her eyes were cold, a predatory gleam in them. My pulse quickened for all the wrong reasons.“Hi?” My voice shaky.“You must be
Logan’s POVI sat in my study, I worked through the papers in front of me. Andrew gave a soft knock on the door and peered through the gap. Glancing up, I noticed he was anxious to tell me what he had discovered. “Enter Beta.” I said leaning back in my chair. He entered holding a file containing information I had asked for, but his face told me he had found more than we had anticipated. “Tell me. What did you find?” I leaned forwards resting my face on my fists, my interest peaked.Andrew cleared his throat, he glanced around as if the wall might hear, “Veronica’s past… It’s a bit complicated.” “Complicated? How?” “Well, her mother…”“Get to it Andrew.” “She wasn’t just the Luna of her pack. She was much more. Way more.” He said sitting down on the other side of my desk, “She… was a dream hopper.” The words hung in the air. I leaned back in my chair, rubbing my chin. Dream hoppers were rare, their abilities both praised and feared. To be able to control and traverse dreams gave o
Veronica’s POVA little glimpse of light shone through the curtains, shining right onto my face. I slowly started to wake up, rubbing my eyes I let out a yawn and let my arms fall onto the bed. I turned over and was greeted by an unexpected sight, a stunning dress hung over a chair that was standing in the corner of the room. Its delicate fabric caught the bright sunlight. Before I could admire the dress too much, a soft knock echoed through the room. The door slowly opened and a friendly face peaked in.“Good morning, Miss Veronica.” She greeted, her voice soft and warm, “May I help you get ready?”“Get ready?”“Oh, yes Miss. Alpha Logan has given me orders to help you get ready for the day he has planned for you.” She said as she started packing her things out on the dressing table.I nodded, and she gave me a hand to get out of bed. She led me to the chair placed in front of the mirror. As she worked on my makeup, the room filled with a faint scent of rosewater and lavender. Her ha
Logan’s POVAs we walked out of the dress shop, I couldn’t help but notice how skinny Veronica was when I placed my hand on her back. I glanced at her, but her eyes were fixed to the ground, she was lost in her own thoughts. It was understandable, today was overwhelming to her. She had never been to town and being around so many people. She had always been trapped away from society, only around people she knew.“Are you alright?” I asked softly. She looked up at me, her gaze didn’t meet mine, “I’m fine. Just processing everything.”I tugged my hands into my pocked, looking up at the sky, “That’s understandable. I get it. But there is one more thing that we have to do today.” It was silent, then I continued, “I want you to meet my pack.”Her eyes widened slightly, “Your pack?” She asked with hesitation.I nodded as I opened the car door for her, “Yes. You’ll be staying there, so it would just be fair for you to meet everyone.” She climbed in, and I made my way around the car and climbe
Logan’s POVI had gotten an invitation from Alpha Ethan, that he was requesting my presents. Already knowing what it would be about, I knew it was a risk going there. But as Alpha, I could hardly reject an invitation to go and see another Alpha regarding business. Leaving early, around six in the morning to be on time for the nine o’clock meeting. I was still tired from last night, going to sleep that late, but I was used to it, sleeping early wasn’t part of having the title as Alpha. As we drove onto the driveway, Ethan was waiting for me in the clearing, his posture was rigid and his eyes hard. He wasn’t one to hide his emotions well. You could always tell what he was feeling, even if it was heartache. But from what I could see he looked pissed. The instant he saw my car drive in, his eyes darkened even more.“Logan.” His voice greeted me as I stepped out.“Ethan.” I replied, my tone matching his. There was no point of fake friendliness. We both knew why I was there.“Let’s go to m
Marcus’s POVI sat in Ethan’s office, my heart pounding in my chest making it difficult to breathe. The air filled with tension, the kind that can make your skin crawl. I was ordered to meet with Ethan, and I knew exactly what this was about. Assuming the meeting with Alpha Logan went horribly wrong. Then the creek of the door behind me made me startle. Throwing myself around, my eyes met as the figure stepped in.“Alpha Ethan.” I quickly jumped to my feet, showing respect by bowing my head.“Marcus.” He began, his voice dangerously calm, “I’m assuming you know why you are here. Why I called you into my office.”I nodded, swallowing hard, “Yes, Alpha.”He grabbed my head and gave me an uneasy smile, before I knew it my head was against the table. Pain spiked through my face, “Logan has refused to return Veronica. Do you understand the gravity of the situation? The mess that you have caused?”I tried to open my eyes but he held me pinned down, placing more and more force, “I didn’t thi
Veronica’s POVThe birds chirped with joy at my windowsill, as the sun made its way through the curtains. My eyes opened slowly, with a moan I pulled the bedcovers over my head. Then I threw myself open and sat on the corner of the bed. Looking out of the window close to my bed, I watched as the birds sat in the trees. The beautiful colours, red, blue, white. Oh, how I wished that I was a bird. Free to fly anywhere. With a sigh I made my way to the bathroom to take a warm and relaxing shower. I was alone, so to speak. Logan probably left early for his meeting. Only he would know what his meeting held for him. After my shower I made my way downstairs to the kitchen. In search of something to eat, my stomach was rumbling. Opening the fridge I found a piece of chicken that I hope was from last night. Taking it in my hand I sniffed it to make sure it was still safe for human consumption. I looked around making sure no one saw me eat it. Not knowing if I’m allowed to eat it, but I was so
Veronica’s POVI watched as Logan walked away. My fingers nervously tapped on my lap, trying to calm myself, trying not to feel nervous and anxious. The thought of being in a place like this, it felt wrong, I felt so exposed. The chandeliers that cast a golden light that felt too warm, too suffocating. My heart started pounding as my eyes scanned around the room. I could feel the judgemental stares from some of the people here. The way they whispered behind their hands. I knew their whispers were about me, a rogue, an outsider. Someone who wasn’t worthy of being with the Alpha. And no matter how hard I tried to push it aside, to ignore them as I was told by Logan, I could help but feel like I didn’t belong here.Logan’s words played in the back of my mind, ‘You belong here. With me.’ But no matter how much I wanted to believe it, my mind didn’t allow me to. I was starting to feel like I was standing on the edge of something fragile, ready to break at any moment. Suddenly, the chair ac
Logan’s POVI stood at the bottom of the stairs, the whispers of my pack surrounded me like a background noise. Normally, I wouldn’t be fazed by their presence, but tonight was different. My focus was on her, and only her. Tonight was the night that I would show her what she meant to me, this wasn’t just any normal night out. She belonged here, belonged here with me. By my side as my Luna, no matter what anyone thought. The second I sent that dress to her room, I knew she would look stunning in it. There was no doubt about that. I knew Veronica was still trying to figure out who she was, still clinging to her past that had her scarred. But the woman I saw wasn’t a rogue, wasn’t someone broken. She was powerful, fierce, and despite everything she’d been through, there was something that made her… Mine.My wolf growled in approval as I saw her descending from the stairs. Her heels clicked against the floor. It was like my breathing had stopped, my heart pounded intensely as she was now
Veronica’s POVReaching the hallway leading to my room, my thoughts were still focused on the events of that day. But something was different… I was different. Everything that I saw, I saw differently, every sound, then I pushed open the door leading to my room, a strange sight greeted me. A black dress laid carefully on my bed, next to it was a note with beautiful, elegant handwriting.I slowly made my way closer to it, picking up the note, then I started reading: “I’m proud of you. Wear this tonight. I can’t wait to see you. - Logan”My heart skipped a beat as I read the note. His way of stating this always makes me fluster. His powerful, commanding tone. It made the note feel more personal than it should be. But the idea of him being proud of me, no one had ever been proud of me except for my mom. I set the note down and turned my attention to the dress. It was stunning. The fabric shimmered under the light that shone through the window. Picking up the dress, I made my way over t
Veronica’s POVAfter breakfast I made my way to the training grounds where Grace was waiting for me. My emotions were all over the place, I have never shifted into my wolf form. Anticipation and nerves were swirling in my stomach. The sun had made its way out of the clouds making the ground heat up and allowing the heat to attack my face. The sound of warriors sparring in the distance. The air smelled of earth and sweat, the smell of hard work. Grace stood on one of the platforms, her expression was serious, but I could see a hint of excitement. “Are you ready?” She asked as I approached her.Taking a big breath then nodded, “Do I have a choice?”She giggled slightly, then motioned for me to climb onto the platform. The space was made sure that no one can hurt one another when practising. There was a big tree casting a shadow over us. “Okay. So, turning into a wolf can be very overwhelming. Especially when it is your first time. With time it gets easier, but the first transition is c
Veronica’s POVThe sunlight slowly shone through the curtains, waking me up gently. I stretched, feeling that Logan was still lying close beside me, and I smiled. I sat upright, then quietly made my way to the bathroom. My muscles were sore in the best way, a reminder of the intense and wonderful night we had shared. It didn’t feel real, it felt like it was a dream that I was about to wake up from. I turned on the shower allowing the water to heat up. As the water warmed up, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, my hair was a mess. And the thought of Logan’s touch made my skin tingle once more. I traced my finger over my collarbone, remembering the way his lips moved over my body. Stepping into the shower, allowing the hot water to flow over me. The steam of the water covered the bathroom, making it difficult to see. Then I heard the door of the shower open and I turned around to find Logan standing in the doorway. Naked. “Is there space for one more?” He asked with a grin th
Veronica’s POVI stood there, barely able to breathe as Logan’s thumb brushed against my cheek. His touch, it was warm and comforting, gentle, shockwaves flowed through my body. My heart raced rapidly, making me warm up. If it wasn’t for the cold night breeze blowing through the open window I think I might pass out. “Logan.” I whispered, trying to find words. The pull between us, what was happening? It was like I wanted him, but I was afraid. It felt like the entire world was standing still but our breaths were indicating that it wasn’t.His eyes still locked with mine, I was both terrified and excited. With every encounter that we had, the pull hadn’t been so intense as it is now. I wanted and needed him, and I needed him now more than ever. “Everything… It… Feels different. I can’t stop feeling you. Your heartbeat, your breathing. When you’re not here it feels like you are.” I admitted, my gaze fell to his lips. His right hand fell to my waist, and his other hand still cupped my f
Logan’s POVI couldn’t stop thinking about her. They way she was standing there, her eyes shining with emotions she couldn’t hide. It felt that everything that had happened at the South Border faded in an instance. It was like she brought me back to reality, to what really mattered. She was the only thing that kept me going, to keep fighting, to survive. The bond between us, something I’d only felt, but when our skin touched it made her feel what I was feeling.I couldn’t believe that she had finally got her wolf, something that I knew she was longing for. Not able to stop thinking about her, my mind was with her and not in the boardroom where it needed to be. My mind was miles away. The chatter of my pack were only whispers, the table my eyes were fixed on was a blur. All that I could see was Veronica standing in front of me, her happiness to see that I have returned.“Sir?” Cain’s voice cut through my thoughts.I blinked, focusing on the long table in front of me. Cain was standing
Veronica’s POVI looked over to the direction as Logan and the pack made their way into the boardroom, the door then closed behind them. The reality of what had happened didn’t yet sink in. I was now bound to Logan, an Alpha on a pack, a leader that was strong and loyal. I had never imagined that something like this would ever happen to someone like me. But, for some strange reason it just felt right, like it was supposed to be like this.Leaning against the wall, trying to catch my breath, feeling the weight of every single thing settling over me. Grace made her way over to me, she didn’t speak but the twinkle in her eyes said that she understood. She placed her hand on my shoulder, her touch was filled with comfort and reassurance. “It’s a lot, isn’t it?” She said her voice just above whisper.I nodded, “I didn’t expect… This feeling. The way everything had happened. Nobody ever tells you how it is to find your mate. They always just say that it is magical, I didn’t expect anything
Veronica’s POVThree days had passed, and there was still no sight of Logan. The waiting started to make a knot in my stomach. For the past few days I sat on the steps waiting for him, hoping that he would return home. My eyes were fixed on the distant road, I started imagining how I would react when he would walk up the road. The warmth of the sun’s rays tickled my skin, but it did little to calm the worry.Everyday went by longer and longer without him, and the questions still played through my mind. What if something had happened to him? What if he was laying lifeless somewhere? What if?The bond between Athina and I was growing stronger day by day, and her presence gave me confidence. But the fear of not knowing if Logan was okay or not, gnawed at me. Leaning forward, resting my chin on my knees, the silence of the mention was soothing. I could feel Grace’s gaze on me, I knew she was looking over me. She gave me space, but if I needed her she would be next to me in just seconds.
