Aurora’s POV
A pair of cool blue eyes pierce through the darkness, so bright that I flinch when they meet my gaze. I stagger back, my feet getting caught in a protruding root. I fall back, and that’s when the wolf emerges.
It’s sleek white fur glows in the dark, but it’s spattered with so much blood that I can only see spots of it. The smell of copper fills the air, getting stronger as it draws closer to me, baring its teeth. Hunger is emanating off it. Starvation.
But how come I can’t bring myself to look away?
“Wake up,” I tell myself. I know this is just a dream, but now it’s getting painfully real and I want to get out of here. “Wake up, Aurora….”
But I don’t stir. Not even a little. The white wolf just stares at me, its gaze way too intelligent. Too predatory.
It’s going to attack, I thought. But no. Instead it starts to shift into an image of a naked man, glorious under the moonlight, all muscle and smooth skin. I trace my gaze up to his face, but before I can make out his features, his voice rings across the forest.
“Take your dress off for me. I need to see you.”
My body jolts with an unexpected wave of desire, and my confusion is so great that it coaxes me right out of the dream.
I sit up with a gasp, my hand flying to my throat as I struggle to breathe. My skin is still hot with longing, my back slick with sweat. The sheets are pooled around my middle like I’ve been thrashing in my sleep, and now my face is hot with embarrassment.
Seriously. I see one naked man in my dream and I’m a mess? I didn’t even get to see… all of him.
“Stop it,” I scold myself, swinging my legs off the bed.
I’m about to head to the shower when my Mom’s voice rings out from downstairs. “Rory, come down! You got a delivery!”
“Coming!” I yell back.
Still out of it, I pick up a robe off the floor and shrug into it as I run down the stairs. Mom is standing by the door in front of a bored-looking delivery man, who just hands me a compact box and points at his pad for me to sign.
Once he’s gone, Mom squeezes my shoulder excitedly. “First present of the day!”
“Present?” I echo, then I realize that it’s my birthday today.
“Happy eighteenth birthday!” Mom greets, kissing me on the cheek. “Now go open your present!”
I’m about to do so, but when I turn the heavy package around, I catch a glimpse of the empty sender address and my blood goes cold.
“Actually, Mom, I don’t feel well.” My words are coming out as stutters. “I need to go.”
I race to my bedroom, the package hanging precariously in my arms as my whole body trembles. I rest my back against the door, tearing the tape off the box and finally breaking it wide open.
Three things fall out.
A red see-through brassiere tangled with matching lacy panties and stockings. A soft pink vibrator in the shape of a rose. Then an envelope, addressing my name in neat handwriting.
I collapse against the door. I don’t know why I’m even surprised when this has been happening for three years now. First time it happened was on my sixteenth birthday. I received the very same thing, except that it contained a small dildo and a baby pink lingerie. There was a note back then too, which told me to look pretty and pleasure myself on my birthday.
Who sends that to a sixteen-year-old?
Most importantly, who sends it over the course of three years?
No address. No name. No anything. Even the delivery service gets baffled.
I don’t want to open the note. I just want to toss everything straight into the trash and burn them when no one can see. But curiosity gets the best of me.
I rip open the envelope, pulling the single note inside it to reveal the same handwriting that’s now getting annoyingly familiar.
“My gorgeous girl, I know you know that you’re all mine. Save yourself for me, and me alone. Don’t mess around with any other man, even your mate. If you do… you might just find him gone.”
Is this a threat?
I toss the note across my room. How disgusting!
I will find this pervert, and when I do, he’s the one who will be gone.

My birthday passes smoothly after that ordeal. My parents surprise me during breakfast and give me gifts, which makes me forget all about the ‘present’ I had earlier.
However, their biggest surprise comes during lunch, when Dad looks at his phone and says, “Margot’s coming home for your birthday dinner, Rory!”
The only thing I can do is pretend to be happy.
Margot and I have a strained relationship to say the least. It doesn’t help that we look drastically different. She has long blonde hair while I keep my ginger hair short and wavy, never going past my shoulders. We both have blue eyes, but hers are like violets, bright and vivid while mine look like the shadowy parts of the ocean. She has golden skin, while I’m pale as a sheet of paper and littered with freckles.
Dad says I look like my grandma, and Margot always laughs at that comparison.
I expect her to be mean to me now, as she arrives for dinner wearing a long-sleeved red dress that hugs her figure perfectly. She’s upstaging me in my own birthday, in my simple green blouse and white pants. But what else can I expect from her?
Her eyes fall upon me as I sit at the center of the table. I wait for the sharp insult, but she just nods at me. “You look quite nice, Aurora.”
“Green does suit her,” Mom adds as she lays some food on the table. I notice that she’s laying out an extra plate. “I’m just going to get your cake.”
She vanishes, so I turn to Dad. “Who else is coming?”
It’s Margot who answers. “It’s my boyfriend. I told Mom and Dad earlier. I would be introducing him to the family.”
“On my birthday?” I blurt out. “My day?”
“Who says everyone has to freeze and be nothing on your birthday?” she snaps at me, facing Dad who said nothing. “Anyway, I think you’re going to like him, Dad. You actually know him, since he’s the Alpha Heir of Black Dawn Pack.”
My eyes go wide. “Our pack?”
Margot just simpers. Even though I’m annoyed, I can’t help but be impressed. She finally did it. She went off and snagged an Alpha Heir.
The doorbell rings, and she jumps to her feet. I can hear the door opening, and a certain scent comes wafting in along with a deep male voice. I can’t make out the words, but I can make out the scent. It’s pine and musk and mint and citrus, all blended into this intoxicating fume that seems to be consuming me from the inside out. I keep inhaling like an addict, taking it in. I can feel my entire body getting flooded with desire before I catch myself.
The scent is coming from Margot’s boyfriend.
Then Margo shows up with a tall young man, both full of smiles.
But my smile just vanished, and I don’t think it’s coming back.
I lock eyes with him, and my planets align.
Her boyfriend is my mate.
Aurora’s POVNo. This can’t be. Maybe I’m just being an idiot. Surely I can’t tell who’s my mate just from his scent?“Good evening, everyone,” the man says, and his voice adds yet another layer of desire in my body. “I’m Mason Chase, the—”“We know you!” Dad beams just when Mom comes out of the kitchen with my cake.He gets up to shake his hand, and Mom just plops down my cake on the table without really caring just to greet this guy Mason. I try my best to smile, but the emotions whirling in my chest just won’t permit me to process anything but the pressing desire in the pit of my stomach. As they clamor over him, laughing and joking, I find myself taking note of everything about him.His hair is brown, but not mousy. It’s this sleek chestnut color that shines under the lights. His eyes are hazel, almost green but not quite. He has a sweet smile, the kind that reaches his eyes. He looks kind and gentle and just everything that my abrasive sister isn’t.Suddenly, I feel a wave of jea
Aurora’s POVA rush of cold encloses my body. Suddenly my hand is too slack for the phone, but I don’t drop it. All the frustration from getting stalked and having the same mate as my sister finally catches up to me, and I find myself throwing the phone across the room. The sound of it clattering against the wall makes the conversation stop in the dining hall. My mom calls out, “Are you okay, sweetie?”“Yeah.” I can’t even feel my lips moving. “I just need some air.”With that, I rush out into the backyard and sit alone in the gazebo. In the distance, I can see a bunch of cars making their way to the driveway. I panic for a while, but then I see that it’s just the cars of Margot’s friends. They seem to be coming over for my birthday.Trust Margot to make my day about her and turn it into her party.Soon enough, the house gets filled with people. My parents seem to be happy, though. Why wouldn’t they? I have always been the outcast, and I have no friends to come over.I just wait in si
Aurora's POVMason starts to shake me, his eyes burning with an emotion that's way too close to hate for me to stay comfortable. I pry myself off of him, taking a couple of steps back. But all the distance I try to put between us is just erased by him still advancing towards me.The mate pull is indeed still there. It's making me feel almost giddy with our closeness even though I know that he's angry right now.I just close my eyes when he gets close enough, when his face is just inches from mine. It's either a kiss or a scream, and I don't think I'm prepared for either....But nothing comes. Instead, I hear the familiar click clack of high heels on the stones set in the garden. I open my eyes and I find that Mason is already walking away from me, towards a familiar figure in the distance. It's Margot, coming in to check on us."Is everything okay?" she asks Mason, but her eyes are on me. "Rory? What is happening?""Nothing," is all I can say.Mason is the one who decides to speak. "I
Aurora's POVMy breath gets stuck in my throat. My chest is so tight with unreleased air that my vision is also starting to get white at the edges. I hold onto the brim of the sink for support, wanting to get away. Needing to get away. But I just stand there like some sort of a masochist, listening to them.I feel... Dirty. Unpure. And the first surge of repulsion for myself for even keeping up with this is the only thing that drives me to get away and go back to my own room.I slam the door, having a dark hope that the sound would somehow make them stop. But of course it doesn't. Tears are leaking out of my eyes and I wipe them furiously, angry with myself."Why did it not work?" I ask Vega, not bothering to hide my anger. "You're my wolf. You're the one tied to this whole mate business. Why did our rejection not work?""I don't know," she says, and I can sense the desperation in her tone. "It should have worked. That's how it goes for a lot of people who denounce their mates. I don'
Aurora's POV"What is that supposed to mean?" I demand, my anger getting so strong that I have to make a conscious effort not to scream so no one hears me.Thankfully, the rest of my family and Mason seem to be too busy laughing and enjoying each other's company to ever notice that some unknown pervert is calling me right now.I know it would be easier to just put the phone down and stop the conversation right then and there, but I want to just stop it right here and right now. I'm just so done with this, and perhaps if I keep the conversation long enough, I would recognize the voice and identify whoever this is."You are not my destiny," I tell him in a cold whisper. "I don't know you. And if you have the balls, maybe you should show up and just get this over with."The man from the other line lets out a laugh, and this time, he sounds truly amused that his laughter softens into a somewhat boyish sound that triggers something in me.As though knowing this, the man's voice once again
Aurora's POVThe day passes pretty fast, which is a huge relief in my end. I just didn't want it to go any faster, and time seemed to fly indeed. Now it's nighttime, and I'm back in bed curled up safe. I locked the window out of fear, and I didn't get the chance to tell my parents about what happened. It's probably for the best, since they are too busy entertaining Margot and Mason to ever pay me attention.Speaking of those two, they didn't stay for the night. I'm glad they're back at their university so they can snuggle and I don't have to see them, but I have to admit that it still hurts. But like what Mom said. Supress and kill.I'm doing exactly that as I try to get some sleep. It's been exhausting, and I just want to sink into the realms of dreams and just forget everything.Thankfully, the stars seem to align and I fall asleep the moment my head hits the pillow. At first, the only thing that surrounds me is darkness. But slowly, more and more colors loom into view, except that
Aurora's POVA gasp rattles my body as I emerge from the dream and open my eyes. I make a blind swipe to get the sheets around me, but then I notice that my blanket has fallen off the bed.A cold gust of wind blows inside, and I stop. I remember closing the window the night before. I even locked it.But now it's wide open, busted down as though someone pushed it open when I was sleeping. It's still a little dark outside, and the open air makes me feel bare....Until I realize that I really am bare right now.I look down at my body and I realize that I'm completely naked, from my head down to my toes. The silk pajamas that I wore from the night before are now strewn on the floor, discarded. Even my socks have been taken off.My heart starts to beat fast. What does this mean?"What happened?" I ask Vega. "Did something happen last night? Did somebody come in?"She comes into attention, but I can already feel her confusion before she even says, "I don't know. I didn't feel anything wrong
Aurora's POV"This can't keep happening to me," I whisper to myself, dropping the box right on the floor. The emotions that start to spill in my chest are things that I don't think I understand anymore. Anger, embarrassment, anxiety, and fear. Who is this man and what does he want from me? How the hell does he manage to keep sending me things without me detecting him? It's all just so frustrating now. My mind gets clouded with all of it in one go, and I find myself just kicking the box until it tumbles down the stairs.I'm about to turn around and just forget about it, but then I notice that it opened completely, spilling its contents. Inside it is another set of lingerie, this time leathery black, the kind that dominant women wear.My face heats up. I don't want anyone thinking that I engage in activities like that. I especially don't want my mom to think that I bought this for myself.I run down the stairs and pick up the box, stuffing the lingerie back inside it with frantic shaky
Aurora’s POVThe morning sun had barely risen when I felt it - a dark pulse of energy that made my celestial powers bristle in warning. I was in Mason's office, discussing the recovery of the shadow plague victims, when Ethan's presence hit me like a physical blow."He's here," I whispered, my wings manifesting involuntarily. They spread wide, shimmering with nervous energy that made the office windows rattle.Mason tensed beside me, his hand finding mine instinctively. Our powers merged, creating a protective barrier just as Ethan burst through the door.He looked terrible - shadows seemed to leak from him despite his attempt to appear normal, and his eyes held a manic gleam that made my heart ache. This was my fault, in a way. My rejection had pushed him further into darkness."Surprise," he said, his voice carrying echoes of something inhuman. "Hope I'm not interrupting anything... intimate."His eyes fixed on our joined hands, and the temperature in the room dropped several degree
Aurora’s POVThe ancient archive room had become our sanctuary as Mason and I worked through the night. A crisis had emerged - several pack members had fallen into a mysterious sleep, their energy being slowly drained by what appeared to be shadow magic. We'd been searching the old texts for hours, looking for anything that might help."Here," I said, my voice hoarse from exhaustion. "Another reference to the shadow plague. It says the Shadow Lords used it to weaken packs before launching larger attacks."Mason leaned over my shoulder to read, his warmth seeping into me. My wings, which I'd manifested to provide light as we worked, fluttered in response to his proximity."They're testing us," he murmured, his breath tickling my ear. "Seeing how we respond to a threat to the pack."I turned to answer and found our faces inches apart. The air between us crackled with combined energy - celestial starlight dancing with lunar power. For a moment, time seemed to stop."Mason," I whispered,
Aurora’s POVThe morning sun painted the archives in shades of gold as I pored over another ancient text. Mason sat across from me at the massive oak table, our knees occasionally brushing as we worked. Each accidental touch sent sparks of celestial energy dancing through the air, making the old books around us pulse with responsive magic."Look at this," I said, pushing a weathered tome toward him. "Another reference to the Shadow Lords' manipulation of the mate bond. They've been interfering with destined pairs for centuries."Mason leaned closer, his scent washing over me - pine, autumn leaves, and something uniquely him that made my dual nature sing. "Could that explain why our bond survived even after..." he trailed off, both of us remembering the failed rejection."Maybe," I admitted softly. "Or maybe some bonds are just too strong to break."His eyes met mine, intense and full of unspoken meaning. Before either of us could say more, my phone buzzed - again. The screen lit up wi
Aurora’s POVThe Black Dawn Pack territory looked exactly as I remembered, yet everything felt different. My heels clicked against the marble floor of the pack office building as I made my way to my new workspace, trying to ignore the whispers and stares that followed me. News of my powers, of what I'd become, had spread like wildfire through the supernatural community."Aurora," Mason's voice sent an involuntary shiver down my spine. He stood in the doorway of what used to be his father's office - now his - looking devastatingly handsome in a charcoal suit. "Welcome back."I straightened my spine, grateful for the professional setting that demanded distance. "Alpha Mason," I replied formally, though my traitor heart skipped at his slight wince at the title. "Thank you for approving my transfer request.""The pack's archives need organizing," he said, his voice carefully neutral though his eyes burned with unspoken emotions. "And you're the most qualified, given your... unique perspec
Aurora’s POVThe ancient texts in the celestial library seemed to glow beneath my fingertips as I traced the prophecy one last time. The words were burned into my memory: "When moon and stars align, the hybrid shall either unite the realms or destroy them all." But there was more - a hidden verse that only my dual sight could reveal:"In the heart of shadow's domain lies the key to their undoing."I closed the book with renewed determination. The Shadow Lords' stronghold - the Dark Citadel - wasn't meant to be unreachable. It was meant to be found by someone who could bridge both worlds."Don't even think about it," Ethan's voice cut through my thoughts. He stood in the doorway, his face set in that familiar expression of protective stubbornness.Mason appeared beside him, looking equally concerned. "Aurora, it's suicide. The Dark Citadel is at the heart of their power.""Exactly," I said, rising from my chair. "That's why it's perfect."Both men moved to block my path, a rare moment
Aurora’s POVThe warning came at midnight - a breach in the sanctuary's defenses that sent ripples of dark energy through my carefully constructed wards. I was in the middle of a training session, hovering mid-air with celestial wings spread wide, when I felt it."They're here," I whispered, just as the shadows began to move unnaturally along the walls.Mason burst through the door first, his eyes wild with urgency. "Aurora, we need to move. The Shadow Lords - they've found a way through."Before I could respond, Ethan appeared from the opposite direction. "The Council's barriers are falling. They're using some kind of ancient dark magic-""I know," I cut him off, landing gracefully. "I can feel them."The shadows coalesced into humanoid shapes, their forms writhing with otherworldly darkness. A voice that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere spoke:"The abomination must not be allowed to reach her full power."Mason and Ethan immediately moved to flank me, their protective inst
Chapter 63Aurora’s POVThe training arena in my sanctuary between realms pulsed with raw energy as I focused on my latest challenge. Spheres of pure celestial light orbited around me while I simultaneously maintained a connection to the moon's power. The duality of my nature had never felt stronger."Impressive," Mason's voice carried from the observation area where I'd allowed him to watch. "You're getting stronger every day."Before I could respond, Ethan materialized through the portal I'd foolishly left open. His eyes darkened at the sight of my display of power."You're being reckless," he snapped. "Channeling both energies simultaneously could tear you apart."I didn't break my concentration, instead adding a third element - creating portals to different realms while maintaining my other manifestations. "My body was literally born to handle this power, Ethan. Stop treating me like I'm made of glass.""Your mother thought she was invincible too," he said sharply. "Look where that
Chapter 62Aurora’s POVThe weight of prophecy and destiny pressed down on me as I returned from the Celestial Temple to the mortal realm. I materialized in the gardens of the Nightshade Pack, where Ethan waited as if he'd known exactly where and when I would appear. His face showed a mixture of relief and something darker - possessiveness that sent chills down my spine."Three days," he said, his voice tight. "You disappeared for three days without a word."I straightened my spine, my new knowledge giving me strength. "I don't answer to you, Ethan. Especially not after learning what you've done."His expression flickered with something like fear before hardening. "Everything I did was to protect you. And now..." He gestured, and I noticed guards positioning themselves around the garden. "Now I'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe.""Safe?" I laughed bitterly. "Or controlled?"Before he could respond, a familiar scent caught my attention. Mason emerged from the shadows, his presenc
Chapter 61Aurora’s POVThe Celestial Temple hung suspended between dimensions, its crystalline spires reaching into an endless sea of stars. Selene, my mysterious guide, led me through corridors that seemed to shift and change with each step. But it wasn't the temple's otherworldly beauty that made my heart race – it was the massive tapestry before me, depicting a scene that made my blood run cold."That's my mother," I whispered, reaching out to touch the shimmering threads. The image showed her in battle, celestial wings spread wide, facing down not just the Council, but something far darker."Yes," Selene confirmed, her ancient eyes filled with sorrow. "But what you're seeing isn't just her final battle. It's a warning of what's to come."She waved her hand, and the tapestry came alive. I watched in horror as my mother fought against shadows that seemed to consume light itself. "The Council wasn't working alone," Selene explained. "They were puppets of something older, something th
